If you grew up in the era these car were produced this car was and still is the quintessential definition of a super car. Especially considering the cars of the day, this car was from a different galaxy. The F40 is an icon..the holy grail.
Amen!
Personally I always preferred the porsche 959 and ferrari gto to the f40 .
@@paulthomson9014 I much prefer Porsche to Ferrari. But the F40 is a special car to many.
@@nls8520 yeh I get it's a special car to some , I do think it OK, very over rated though. By classic ferraris to its not an exceptionally rare car either .
Yep its amazing given how primitive the tech is in it. Old ladder type frame from the 50s. Engine from 1975. Almost no electronics and terrible fitment. Yet super fun to drive.
Couldn't stop smiling while watching this video. The reason for the 1st gear being in a dog-leg position, is to have the 2nd and 3rd gear on a straight line, as they are the 2 most used gear on a race track. Thanks for the treat guys !
The reason that the F40 logo on the rear wing is on one side only is that Enzo Ferrari didn't want to see that logo going backwards as the car drove forwards. A stunning machine and beautifully proportioned work of automotive art. Happy New Year, chaps.
Thanks, Andy
this is one cool info
complete rubbish. stop posting dumb comments...
Gooni goo goo... Suits you.
@@goonigoogoo5868 If rubbish, do you know the true reason?
Definitely my dream car. But I'll settle for my Lego F40 for now.
I've only seen one in person once, and oh what an experience it was! I was in the US before the release and driving on a major interstate not far outside of the New York Metropolitan area. There I was in my crappy rental car and this basically debaged Ferrari (latter identified as the F40) rolled by at modest speed. I was so memorized at the time I had to get a closer look. The driver realized I was attempting to sneak up on him and not simply pass. I turned to my right and looked him directly in the eye to wave and he disappeared with a down-shift and astronomical scream from high revs. I was satisfied from the brief glance I got that day. To top things off the driver looked really familiar and I just could not shake that. After a couple of weeks I realized that he looked like Enzo Ferrari. The internet was a space age fantasy at that time and I needed to round up as many photos of him that I could find in my collection of auto magazines. When I looked at one photo of him wearing what appeared to be those same dark glasses and matching overcoat the driver had I couldn't believe it. It must of been him taking this incredible machine out for a solo drive to enjoy. If it wasn't him I will still cherish the first glimpse of something that spectacular when most automobiles where incredibly boring and pathetic.
Amazing, story - thanks for sharing that, cvc
Special special car for anyone born in late 60s to late 70s. I was fortunate to follow one around Loughborough and surrounding country side in late 89 for about an hr in my Newly acquired first car (1986 VW Scirocco GTS 1800) .The F40 was an incredible stunning car to follow huge rear tyres, wing, engine cover, exhausts and very red. once in a while I would hear this howl moments later it would disappear up the road rapidly, As any self respecting 17 year old car nut ,I used the force to keep up,the narrow winding country lanes helped my cause tremendously I felt like Jean Alesi for an hr. God knows what the guy driving it felt like,I suspect euphoria and bewilderment. Probably the most iconic Ferrari for our generation. Really enjoyed this vid and your channel this year .Happy and prosperous new year CGs
Thanks for sharing, Marcus, great story
Its a very special for me too, and iam born in 1999, that tells a little bit about how special this car is😍 just perfection
Born in 1989 and has always been my dream car
These guys are so likeable, love the videos
Absolutely stunning even after 3+ decades later. My all time favorite Ferrari!
The F40 was my dream car when I started watching this video. Now I want one even more! Thanks for a great real world insight.
👍👍
I knew a former F1 mechanic. around the year 2000, Tony had an F40 in his garage for a clutch. amazing to have gotten to see one.
A product from the Group B era which is why I love it so much.
I said to myself, not another F40 video. But I must say that this is the best F40 video on UA-cam! And I watched them all!
Thank you very much - we did try to do the old girl justice
Love the channel, probably the most complete and exciting when it comes to Ferraris! You are not shy of details, using and driving them! The only way it should be! Thanks
I know this is an old video but I had to comment , I like most of my age utterly love the F40 and I have a memory of when it was introduced , I went into my local Newspaper shop in 1987 during dinnertime at work , I was 17 , I saw it on the front cover of a magazine and I honestly don't remember which one it was , in the cellophane packet of the magazine was a cassette tape and it was of the test drive of the F40 , this was obviously way before the internet , I listened to it when I got home and it blew me away , the sounds of the car , the sheer excitement of the test driver describing his jaunt in it , the absolute thrill in his voice , I'll never forget it. Absolutely brilliant , Thank you for the video on this EPIC car.
Glad you liked it, Lee
What a superb video, makes such a difference having an owner describe the car, rather than a starry eyed fan boy.
Thank you for all this year's content.
Best you tube car video ever. "You put your foot down, you've got time to knit a reasonable sized jumper ..." Genius.
Thanks
@@TheCarGuysTV Not watching the Monaco Grand Prix?!
Old cars might be slow ,but they are more beautiful and fun to drive and more of a piece of art and craftsmanship
The point is, classic cars have more soul.
The F40 is anything but slow xd
Alexpascu2785 its 0-60 is a bit slow compared to todays cars
Wonderful. Easily the best thing I've watched this Christmas. Thanks chaps.
Guys....this has made my day. Its the pin up poster when the countach finally hanged up its trousers. Love the laughs between you guys its so funny. Keep it up !!
Great job guys! Well worth your troubles likely the most insightful F40 video I've seen - definitely the funniest! I was a lad of about 20 when it came out, a favorite then/now & this just gave me a BOOST why! So much character quirks be damned. How to most effectively exit the car on hands sounds about right had me in stitches, & did you see that F40 exclusive wing shadow as Jason launched out on the Rd for his stint at the wheel???!!! Nothing else equals the F40. I got my sensory overload fill on my bday in '16 at the Daytona Ferrari Mondiali event where no less than 3 were for up-close viewing, plus (2) 288 GTO's & even the super rare 288 GTO EVO. Never thought I'd get so excited watching a car fire up as when they moved them to their "sleeping qtrs. I was a kid again! Hope you guys been able to attend one it was NUTS. Cheers!
Glad you liked it, Mark
Best review of a f40 i've ever seen. Thanks for the close-up shots of the car, i paused multiple times to study the design :)
Also check out Chris Harris” f40 vs f50 review
Love the friendship and genuine passion for cars!
Thanks
Love the new Ferraris but the F40 a ferrari of old is next level. Great video and great watch. Keep up the great work
19 minutes in is possibly the best acceleration of a F40 ever put to film….absolutely wonderful 👍🏻👍🏻
Glad you enjoyed it
The F-40 - Diablo - RUF were the top 3 Cars of my era. Beautiful Cars
I had one! Put 9k km on it. Seat wears horribly. Yes the rear clam shell strut was a joke. Raw and brutal. Thanks for reigniting my wonderful memories!
You’re most welcome
Been waiting for this car to be covered! Iconic. I think I had the same posters as Jason in my younger years although the 288 poster was my favourite.
My first F40 I saw was in 1991 and still remember the plate F40 WON ! How cool.
You talk about the 0-60 but you have to remember your using a gated gear stick and manual clutch. With the mod cons of today how much quicker would / could it actually be??
Congrats on 20k subs but for you guys I suspect this will be just the tip of the iceberg
Thanks guys!....you've just solved a huge mystery for me :-) I passed this F40 twice during December (Rockbourne Straight and again up near Godshill a week or so later) and I nearly wet myself each time with excitement!
My girlfriend has threatened to dump me on numerous occasions over Christmas for droning on about it and I'm sure she'll be delighted that I can now feed her more information about the owner!!
With any luck, she'll be kicking me out soon and I can come and sleep on your garage floor!
Glad to be of service, zeb0071 😀
I have really enjoyed your Chanel this year guys. The youngsters could ,earn a lot from you boys. Looking forward to your adventures in 2019.
Yes, they could learn to be generally bitter in life. At least a stone overweight (more in Damian's case), frivolous with money and watches, and often very silly.
This video made my day. Props on a fantastic video

I won't say your lucky cos I'm sure you've work hard for your toys, but dude you own the best car ever made ...you lucky bastard lol...😂😂😂

Just epic and iconic in every way possible. My earliest memory of that car was seeing Nick Masons car (F40 NPG) I even remember the number plate i'am that sad , in 1988 at Donnington circuit in the far corner of the spectator car park ,with a huge crowd around it. The passenger footwell was full of empty crushed coke cans and empty packets of crisps scattered everywhere like a skip, unbelievable !!.
Funnily enough I was watching some old jay leno's garage, ferrari episodes yesterday on yet another youtube wormhole , featuring David lee's F40 I did not realise that those IHI turbo's were designed and made in Japan !!! . Top work guys as always. 👏👏👏👍👍👍
Fun fact: Enzo dubbed this car as his greatest achievement. Bear in mind he witnessed the 250 GTO.
But that was at a time when Ferrari was at great turmoil, and at a time when old man Enzo was not at his sharpest. Not taking away from the F40, merely pointing out that what Enzo thought at that time, did not natter all that much.
That being said, I still think it's one of the greatest Ferrari ever made.
Enzo sold the road car factory in 1969
pretty sure he didn't "dubbed this car as his greatest achievement"
@@RoverWaters The F40 was designed by eng. Nicola Materazzi under explicit request of Enzo Ferrari. He first was asked to design the engine of the 288 GTO. Then he was asked to design (in his spare time, because that couldn't take time to the road or the F1 division) the GTO Evoluzione for racing in group B. Materazzi designed the all car and Pininfarina did the body kit. This had a bad CX and so Materazzi designed a better body kit. When the test drivers tried the car, they were so impressed that Enzo Ferrari decided to make a road car of it, in limited edition. This final evolution was refined by Pininfarina and became the F40. After this project, Fiat decided to be more involved in the road division and Materazzi decided to leave. Then the 348 was made. So the F40 is the latest car designed and developed under the request and the control of Enzo Ferrari: Fiat had nothing to do with it. I don't know if Ferrari considered this to be his best car, but certainly was his last one.
@@gianlucapx Enzo had no decision power
calm down simp, learn the history, FIAT called all the shots
@gianluca p Sr Materazzi created this masterpiece and received nothing for his efforts. He should have been up for promotion and the mean old corpse, rejected his promotion.
Stumbled across this on UA-cam and loved the fun with you guys. Great to see an iconic car being owned and driven as it should be. Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Awesome video! I'm with Jason - the best car ever built! I love how you're not shy in using it how it's intended!
I was making my way into work here in London a few years back on my little 125 and saw one turning onto Gower St - never seen one in the flesh before, though I caught up with it in the heavy traffic literally swearing to myself in sheer owe of it!
That's the effect it has on people
TheCarGuys.TV It’s timeless, still looks amazing today
Epic epic video - F40 is my dream car and you conveyed the sense of fun and excitement that I’d always hoped it would be! Merry Xmas!
Andy Presland Well said.
What a way to end the year. Very good video. I would be surprised to find someone disliking this video.
The intro was very good with the music. It would help to improve the video even more to have some slo-mo action whilst you describe some of the features or simply when you pan along the car.
I think you should do more feature length videos of special cars, as it allows to deepen more into small details and provide some extra content than the regular ones. I know it’s extra work but the result is just epic. This is better than most car-related tv nowadays.
If there was a fire and you have to save one car of your collection, I think this should be the one. It’s an icon. It’s the purest expression of what Ferrari represents.
A brilliant video, warts and all, but it doesn’t matter. The car is an icon. Great review, very amusing and down to earth as usual. Your videos always bring a smile to my face, so glad I’m a subscriber.
My all time dream car and lovely to see it being used in the manner in which is was designed.
👍🏻👍🏻
Really enjoyed the feature length F40 review. Great to see some bits that would otherwise be missed on other reviews such as how to put the rear hood up etc. Look forward to seeing some more!
1989 and my Dad took me to the International Motor Show at Earl's Court, I was 7 years old at the time, and my main memory of the day was me standing next to the F40. Little did I know back then what an impact that had on me and my future passion for cars, especially Ferrari.
What dreams are made of - great story
Guys amazing video amazing car, I am 37 and this is the dream car, so basic so raught yet so beautiful, nothing come close.......
Just wanted to say your banter is excellent, thanks for a good listen while detailing my car today 👍

Damian always looks terrified when Jason is driving and now I know why. 😂
A truly great video guys! Loved it! Greetings from Sweden!

Brilliant video on his iconic legend....delivered with your usual flair and humour. Merry Xmas guys and looking forward to 2019 👍
Best F-40 review ever!!!!!
This is my dream car 💯
I enjoyed this vid even more than the TDF content, probably because you don't see many F40s ever driven! I like it when you both playfully poke fun and banter about the weak points of such a great car such as aspects of the build quality, heater dials etc.
Cheers, Scott - glad you liked it
I wasn't the greatest fan of the F40 when it came out, I'm a 288 GTO fan, however your vlog has elevated it right up there in my list of 'wow' cars - thank you.
Great stuff, Kevin. Though obviously Damian does believe the 288GTO is God
TheCarGuys.TV I too have been a 288 GTO lover for some time- my favourite ever Ferrari. However, videos such as this still raise the desire in me to want both. Merry Christmas guys. Can't wait to see more vids.

The thin paint was due to weight savings. The poor build quality was due to homologation...like the Porsche 917 was also crude because the purpose was to race.

It’s amazing to me that turbo lag is praised these days as something exciting. I had a 90s car with turbo lag and it sucked majorly.
Turbo lag in a Ferrari isn't the same as in a shitty ecobox! Old cars and N/A engines had characters which is why they are praised.
@@davidmitchell5638 I had a Nissan S14, hardly a crappy econobox.
@@mrnicktoyou still take an S14 over anything brand new from Nissan other than GT-R!! But I get your point.
As JC said, you can tell your wife I'm keeping up with that Ferrari and she'll say what Ferrari??
Turbo lag on a V8 doesn't feel the same as a 4 banger.

TheCarGuys.TV I think you mentioned the correct engine displacement in the video.
Real treat of a video, got the coffee going, and enjoyed the video. Not sure I could dare drive an F40, if ever the chance came about.

Fantastic video, wow remember buying performance car magazine with a free cassette tape on the front and getting home from school and playing the review of the F40 versus the 959. I was more of a 959 fan, but the f40 is a true classic. Thanks for sharing.
You’re very welcome, Gareth. I had that tape too
I think the Alfa Romeo 4C is the closest thing on the road to this. Carbon tub, non power assisted steering, huge turbo boost, Italian, go kart handling, really wide, incredibly rare. two very cool cars.
Most contemporary road tests beat 4 seconds for 0-60, with 0-100 between 7.7 and 8.3.
A leisurely drive through Fordingbridge. I know it well 😉
Agreed, best car that ever has been/will be made.
Great review, probably the best F-40 review I've seen on the internet
Thank you very much
You sold it? 😳 As Luke Skywalker said: NOOOOOOO! 😫
Merry Christmas guys, thanks for sharing all the good and quirky about the F40, awesome car!
A lot of F40s have been dynoed and have around 515 bhp
Excellent news
Also, the amount of horsepower is the MINIMUM. Most have around 40 more.
Cool, I also thought the 0-60 was in the late 3 second mark?
So much torque it spins the wheels pushing hard even at 40 to 60 mph. That can slow down the 0 to 60 unless the temps are high and the road dry. My tuned S4 spins the wheels too easily and I have to touch accelerator gently and push hard once it going 20 or 30 in cold temps.
I love that less paint comment, so funny! Nice to have some humour when it comes to these collector obsessions
Yes it is
it's a widow maker. Even pro drivers have a heck of a time controlling it in the rain.
@Chris Stavro light weight, a lot of HPs, RWD, no electronics... I can imagine, like every GT or supercar of her times. 911s were even worst in the same conditions.

It’s also the very first production car to break 200MPH
not really dodge datona ,plymouth suberbird first 220 mph!!gunnise book world record .maybe u ment firist prod. ferrari?that fast?
For starters at least, those cars wouldn't do that w/the street tires they came with. The F40 could break 200 Mph bone stock right off the showroom floor on original tires. And if you were to wage bets on which could hold that spd longest without blowing up, my $$$ would be on the F40. I won't even touch which one's faster on a road course! 😋

The Super Bird (and dodge Daytona) records you are thinking of were track records for stock cars (aka, Nascar) of the time, not straight off the production line automobiles.

But when it comes to American muscle cars, I'm a mopar guy myself. 👍
