This is a great song period! Everything about it is strong. Production is nothing without great material and performances and this song has them in spades!!!!! This song stands with any soul/blues song the Stones have ever done, it will have a long life.
What a great, comprehensive review of “Sweet Sounds of Heaven!” I agree with every single thing you’ve said about the song and its production. As of now I’ve heard the song five times, and its initial wow factor has remained impactful.
Thanks so much as always. I'm trying to keep my excitement for Hackney Diamonds under check - but so far, these first two "singles" are everything I could've hoped for and more.
The 5-minute version is different . It’s got a full verse sung just by Gaga which isn’t on the 7-minute version so you can’t dismiss the shorter version as it isn’t just an edit of the longer version
You are so right. The idea of edited versions annoy me and I skip them. I actually heard the edited version by accident and it was awesome (though I miss the 2 minute ending of the longer version - which is beyond incredible). You're right though - it was excellent and I shouldn't have judged it without hearing it. It's very different. Which means I'm gonna have to buy the singles, if and when they get physically released. Thanks for correcting me because you are so right.
I am getting chills just thinking about the song. I just listened to it before I found your review. OMG. It is unbelievable!! You do have to go with the full track. I agree 100% with your review and description of the second part.
What a combo - Mick and Lady Gaga - I didn't see it coming - Absolutely amazing performance. Would love to see it live on the Grammys and they slay the audience with a real live music performance instead of the usual lip sync stuff they pass off.
Excellent review of a song that has the distinct danger of getting my Lady Ga Ga liking daughters to suddenly develop an appreciation of their dad's music ... who knew! This song "works" ... production and performance are stellar ... CMcG, Aberdeen, Scotland ... p.s. re Angry. I loved the home made unofficial video somebody made of choreographed teens dancing in synch to the tune in a South American town square ... actually made the song resonate more to me ... really transmitted the vibe ...
That would be great if the younger generation picks up on this and the Stones because of Lady Gaga. Not sure if she has that kind of influence anymore but would be great. I saw that that dance video. Was fabulous. Loved it.
Great review Alan. Like you, I'm a diehard Stones fan, 65 years old and loving this band since I was a kid jumping around to "Satisfaction". The Rolling Stones really mean everything to me. That said, I really like this new song. Lady Gaga is tremendous. I do not speculate on Lisa Fisher or anyone else doing the part. For me, that kind of speculation is only if the Gaga part had been a miss. It clearly isn't, so it's a waste to suggest who else could have done her part. In fact, it's because she's so good that I like the shorter version (the so-called edit) which has her singing solo in the second verse. In the long version, she has a solo part in the coda, but I like giving her a more prominent part earlier in the song as the edit version does. Also, I hate to say it, but I have to get used to Mick's falsetto screams in the coda of the long version, and I hate trying to convince myself that it isn't over the top as I listen to it. The shorter version doesn't have this, so I don't need to focus on it or to think about it coming up. All in all, both versions are great and Andrew Watt gives them a modern sound without stifling their identity. I would have liked, however, a little more guitar from both Keith and Ronnie. Compare this to the Otis Redding cover "Dreams to Remember" from the 2021 bootleg 50 Fully Finished Studio Tracks. It has a similar sound and vibe, and the guitars are great. I would have liked some of this kind of guitar work in the new track. But this would be nitpicking, and I genuinely love the new track(s) as they are. The Rolling Stones have hit 2 home runs with "Angry" and the 2 versions of "Sweet Sounds of Heaven". I can't wait for the rest of the album.
Thank you for your amazing so insightful comments. Amazing. I was wrong and totally jumped the gun. I did my video without even hearing the edit - assuming they just cut stuff out (like most edits) and didn't see the point. Wow was I wrong. The edit as you said is like a completely different song. Almost equally fantastic, except, for me, I love that 2 minute ending. It's so real, live, unplanned it seems, and Jagger and GaGa are really going at it, in real life. Spine chilling performance. I totally hear what you're saying about the "lack" of Keith and Woody. The little guitar touches, and licks are perfect for the song. Work amazingly well. Almost surprised people haven't "criticized" the song as solo Jagger - which is almost sounds like. But really that's what makes the best Stones, the best. It's about what the song needs and they nailed this one. I agree about the GaGa / Fischer comments....a bit silly. But people like to speculate and that's cool. In this case GaGa hit perfection in my opinion, so no need for those comparisons. Thanks so much again.
@@TheAlanRosenbergShow Alan, thank you for your comments. You strongly make the point (as you do in your video) about the rawness of the Jagger / Gaga exchange in the final 2 minutes of the long version. Having listened and re-listened, I must say you are really correct about this. My concerns about Mick being over the top kind of clouded my appreciation for what the 2 singers are accomplishing, which, as you've said, take the song to a whole other level, simply fantastic. Thanks for emphasizing this point, and waking me up to it. It really is the case, powerful stuff, and I love it. As a lifelong passionate fan of this band, I have to tell you, Alan, that I truly appreciate your videos, and your passion as well. It is very clear how much you care about the Rolling Stones. Thank you.
Thanks again for your warm and so powerful comments. And also thanks for supporting me and my channel. Your comments mean a lot to me. It can be hard to be such a die hard fan. Like yourself, I can (and do) listen to the Stones all the time. Sometimes our comments, which are given in love and tribute to the band and music we love, are just our personal constructive criticism. We can get attacked for that, even if we own 500 Stones albums - which should be proof of how much we love the band. As an example, the concern of Mick oversinging in the recent past, is a loving constructive criticism. It doesn't mean his voice isn't rich and fantastic, especially for an 80 year old man. It simply means, it detracts from the song...hello "Laugh, I Nearly Died" and the whole Superheavy album. So glad that Andrew Watt has reigned him in (to a point - I would have reigned him in more...lol). These two songs are exceptional, exciting and chill inducing performances. It's an exciting time to be a Stones fan again. I can't wait for the album. Thanks so much Michael for being a wonderful contributor to my little channel. @@michael1415
I just heard Sweet Sounds Of Heaven a couple of hours ago and after listening to it a few times it sounds to me like a Aretha Franklin song from back in the day when Jerry Wexler produced those great Gospel and Soul albums for Atlantic Records back in the 50's and 60's. It's a great song and one that will get heavy rotation in my house when I get Hackney Diamonds.
That’s a great comparison. I think the contribution of Lady Gaga and the production, loved that Jerry Wexler production comparison, takes the song to an incredible level. Like that classic Aretha you mentioned. Yea. Great point you made.
The Stones are my favorite (Beatles 2nd). Usually, i have to listen to a Stones tune 2-3 times before I really start enjoying it. This tune I loved after the 1st minute if listening to it.
Thats' awesome, because I can also see this song taking time to grow on people. Though, I loved it immediately as well. Also Angry too. Thanks so much.
I thought it was good - she was clearly really into it. But I'm used to Lisa Fischer's version and they were always spinetingling. Extraordinary. GaGa wasn't in that league.
Yes, Jagger's voice is kept more in check, although I can still hear some irritating elements. I would love to have heard him singing it in the early seventies. The song proves The Stones aren't just simply repeating themselves (although there are elements that remind me of 'I Got The Blues'), etc.
There definitely are some of those "elements" especially in the first verse where he sings alone, but thankfully it doesn't cross over into Laugh, I Nearly Died territory, if you know what I mean, and I know you do.
Hey Alan - now thats a song !! Brilliant. When you're humming the song after one listen you know is a keeper. The best thing they've done for a long time. The female vocal reminds me of the Pink Floyd song The Great Gig In The Sky with the Clare Torry vocal - epic. Hopefully the rest of the album holds up. Cheers Doug
Good evening Alan I agree with you on the stones sweet sounds of heaven I Just heard the song and it fantastic for me it had that deep feeling of emotion coming from the sound! From Terry M. in Erie Pennsylvania
Thanks so much. I"m glad to see others, like yourself, concerned about Mick's "oversinging". For awhile, I thought it was just me. Thank you Andrew Watt indeed - so well said. Thanks.
Yes - great description. PERFECT. Totally agree - this song is EPIC and yes Angry is a very exciting rocker. The similarity is that the ends of both soar are the highlights - really soar / really take off.
I still think its the most powerful track on the album. Hoping next year will be nominated for a Grammy and would love to see Stones live with Lady Gaga showing that crowd how its done.
Well that was an extremely positive review and I have to say completely merited. What a wonderful surprise this single is and a great advert for the album, 5 stars!
Thanks Mark. I just hope the momentum can carry for another 3 weeks so this album is a commercial success. I really want it for them. They deserve but considering Angry didn't even chart in the Billboard top 200, that was very disheartening to me.
This is a an outstanding review of a what is proving to be a great song. I totally agree with Alan’s assessments with one small exception. Steve Jordan’s drumming in Sweet Sounds is a departure from Charlie Watt’s style, but I don’t agree that Angry is also. I definitely hear Charlie’s driving type of beat in Angry.
Thanks so much. In Angry, it's not radically different. It's a standard type rock song drum pattern, but I do find it louder and perhaps more ballsy, more powerful. Perhaps it's just the production.
Lucky you - what a classic show to be at. I recorded it on VHS live at the time. Had it on bootleg vinyl and then bought the official release on CD/DVD. I don't have the official vinyl, so I don't know. In today's vinyl world, it's probably sacriligious to say. I have a vintage 80's component stereo system. My turntable is Denon with an Ortofon stylus. Good and solid and has lasted my 40 years. But hardly audiophile quality. With that said on my surround system, good remastered CD's virtually always sound superior to vinyl (except the more recent brick-walled CD's which I have issues with). I have vinyl enthusiasts come to my house and I A/B them and 100% on my system, the CD's are superior but again that's just my system.
Spot on analysis. A great performance as you say. Falls a little short of the rarefied heights of their classic arsenal. One of the qualities that made some of those early 70s recordings so was the vocals being down in the mix. You have to lean in to try to follow along with the lyrics. Even after hundreds of times listening to Exile I am still not certain of all the lyrics and that adds to it. Jagger's voice becomes more of an instrument and the quality of the lyrics becomes less of a focus when not as clear. Sweets Sounds of Heaven is solid and a very welcome addition to the catalog. Its tantalizingly close to being right there with a song like Shine a Light
You’ve stated my feelings exactly and so eloquently. Thanks thanks. His vocals were so much more effective when his voice is another instrument in the mix. When he became a singer and sometimes oversings and over powers the mix. It’s much less effective to me. As you stated. And Tumbling Dice is an example I use all the time. I’ve heard it thousands of times. I’ve no idea what the lyrics are. And it’s better for that. Thanks again.
Great reaction..love me some R.S seen them live 7maybe 8 times.the song is amazing like a gift . Kinda like a let it bleed vibe..🌹R.S .they sound fantastic...
Thanks so much. Interesting mention about Let It Bleed, but yea I guess with Gimme Shelter and You Can't Always Get What You Want...makes sense. Best, Alan
I would have liked the instruments to be a bit higher in the mix. I was straining to get enough of them. But I was listening through my tablets speakers, which is an awful way to listen. So it might not be an issue at all when I get my hands on the CD. But overall I really liked it, but not quite as much as Angry. I need this album to be released now. I don’t know if I can wait 3 weeks. 🔥
Interesting. Gotta say, and you know I'm a huge Stones and Mick Jagger fan, but without GaGa - I don't think the song would be anywhere near the greatness it has. She truly takes it to another level, that Jagger on his own wouldn't have achieved on it. Just my thoughts and I know little to nothing about Lady GaGa
@@jonnobloggs8642 Not in a huff at all but think Merry Clayton or Lisa Fischer would've been better.Jagget is no fool, use Gaga and get a whole new audience.Even at concerts I went to he used new bands to open.Stone Temple Pilots,No Doubt,Living Color, all garbage lol
@wombatwilly1002 I can easily counterargue your statement by suggesting that Jagger is actually taking a bit of a gamble by using Gaga in the respect that for any new fan he may accrue from her presence he may lose one older traditional Stones fan who doesn't like the idea of someone who is not in the band singing on one of their songs .And you really are splitting hairs on the Lisa F skit - It's a bit like someone saying My dad's Rolls Royce is better than your dad's Porche isn't it ?
@@jonnobloggs8642 personally GaGa means nothing to me. Have none of her albums and no plans to get them. But I can appreciate the amazing job she did. Would Lisa Fischer have done a better job. Who knows. It’s irrelevant. We have to go with what exists and GaGa took that song to another level.
Don’t forget Don Was was also producing Hackney Diamonds. Don Was produced “I Go Wild” which is an underrated Stones ‘rocker’ from Voodoo Lounge. Don Was adds that big Phil Spector sound.
I'm not sure was Was produced on Hackney Diamonds. I guess we'll have to see. I think it was a good change. I never had a problem with Don Was, but clearly Andrew Watt put a fire under these guys and they needed it badly. I'm a big fan of Voodoo Lounge.
I think (we don't know fully yet) Don Was only produced two of the tracks on Hackney Diamonds which dated back to 2019 (the ones with Charlie Watts .. 'Mess it Up' .. 'Live by the Sword'). Though I am a big fan of Don Was's work with them (and others).
I was wondering - since they're only using a few of the old cuts, would Don Was be the producer on them. Or would they credit Andrew Watt on those couple of older recordings as well. I guess we'll see. @@IanBillen
@@TheAlanRosenbergShow Good question. My guess is that Don Was would get production credit on those two tracks alone if not at least shared with A. Watt on those two tracks. It was his time and he more than likely asked / had some contract for points (percentage) on the things he worked on. He will be listed or at least listed as additional production on those two almost for certain. All the rest will most likely be Andrew Watt.
Salt of The Earth is another good example - the ending of it of course. Shine A Light is one of my all time favorite songs - great guitar solo and one of the greatest Jagger vocals of all time. This song is in some very good company..
To me SSOH is very gospel / blues / soulful. Heaven is pretty unique in the Stones cannon - love it by the way. But to me it's so "etherial", just floats you away - actually pretty great song / production as well. But musically, not really seeing the connection. To me anyway, but great song call out. Love that tune. Thanks, Alan
Just listened to the song. Sounds like a blues/gospel song to me. I enjoy slow blues song, but it may not be everyone's taste. Too bad Lady Gaga didn't go the Merry Clayton route when she hit the high notes. It would have brought the house down. It does sound slightly overproduced. Blues should should sound sparse, but that's just me. The switch in lead vocal is done to great affect. Are the 2 singles released be on physical media with a non-album song or just a download. If just downloads, I'll just buy the album. The Stones is the one group which I've brought every studio album (with a few compilation and live albums along the way).
I haven't seen a physical release - my local records stores don't have them (yet). I don't even think there's a B-side - Angry has like a etching. No news on SSOH yet. Definitely a bluesy / gospel song and I'm glad so many people seem to love it, because it's really not very commercial, but I loved it (as it seems most people) from the first listen.
Another perceptive review Alan - your comments are always on the money and give a lot of pleasure to us diehards! And as you say, if Andrew Watt(s) is the best Stones producer since Jimmy Miller, then yes, that is REALLY saying something. I hear what you're saying about Steve Jordan's drum sound on Keith's solo albums, although 'Talk is Cheap' seems to me the guilty party (rather than the two later ones) with its clomp-clomp-clomp drumming and muddy production. All was forgiven however, by me anyway, with the superb additional material on the 'Talk is Cheap' re-release two or three years back. Then Keith really nailed it on 'Main Offender' (not that everyone would agree, by any means) and 'Crosseyed Heart', wonderfully accomplished as it was, is let down just a little, for me, with the messy 'Blues in the Morning' and the Joe Strummer-style rap of 'Substantial Damage'. But still, that's a detour from the current single. 'Sweet Sounds of Heaven' is more of a standout track I guess, but even so, 'Laugh I nearly Died' was one of my favourite cuts on 'Bigger Bang', and I don't see that either song compares badly with the other, as you seem to suggest Alan. And looks like 'Hackney Diamonds' is going to go down a whole lot better than 'Bigger Bang' - quite rightly so too.
Thanks so much for your awesome comments. For me, I use Laugh I Nearly Died as an example of a great song that is hampered by the modern over the top vocalizing of Jagger. Way to high in the mix and he oversings to the detriment of the song. It annoys the hell out of me. Funny I love Talk Is Cheap but was let down by Crosseyed Heart especially it’s production and drum sound. Based on the two so far Andrew Watt has helped them tremendously like Jimmy Miller. Excited for the album for sure. Thanks so much.
Interesting what you say Alan. One might also say that, as well 'over-singing', Jagger is guilty of 'over-projecting' or 'over-dancing' especially on the post-1989 shows.....for me anyway! On another note, I wonder when Mr Clearmountain will work his magic with the 1978-79 Nassau Sessions. So much great stuff there as well as the official Emotional Rescue stuff.
amongst my favorite bootleg material is that time period. Maybe one day they'll do a deluxe of that. I personally haven't been satisfied with the bonus stuff on the deluxe editions. I still prefer the original bootleg recordings. Jagger's later day vocal style can be jarring and doesn't mix with the original material - production and vocal style. Just my opinion. @@bernardjennings3549
Can’t wait. Not going to listen to it, I want to sith down with the whole album and apart from Angry, I want it fresh! Looks like I have to reach out to some Americans I know and get the MLB (Colorado Rockies or Boston Red Sox) edition of Hackney Diamonds (You know me and my baseball). Posted my Who’s Next unboxing today by the way 😊 Enjoy the rest of the weekend Alan.
You were right. Considering I'm not a Lady GaGa fan, I wasn't sure what to expect - but wow - she kills it on that song. What a production and performance.
I hear you - as strictly a song, it's not up there with Gimme Shelter, Let It Loose, Shine A Light, but as a performance and production - wow it's incredible. But it's Lady Gaga who puts into over the edge into that incredible performance zone. It is chill inducing on more than one occasion.
It certainly doesn’t have an EXILE feel in my opinion. It’s much slicker, modern all the way. I am impressed by it but it sounds as you said somewhat like more of a JAGGER solo track..but GAGA does elevate the song I’m not much of a GAGAITE either. So it is quite a track but again more a Jagger solo duet with GAGA vibe …KR is just adding some guitar fills same with Ronnie Wood…that’s my opinion.
I agree with you totally. People are saying Exile. Perhaps it's has that kind of a feel because it's relatively uncommercial, bluesy and soulful / gospel like, but it doesnt sound like Exile at all. It really does sound like a Jagger solo track (that's not a bad thing in my opinion). Keith and Woody add relatively little but they do add what the song needs and that is great - just little tasty perfect touches. GaGa - yea she takes this track to heaven.
@FormulaCarl500 well I heard the new single sweet sounds of heaven it’s good but is it as good as how the stones were in there hay day no no no those years were over for a very very long time the last best stones albums was tattoo you I think the stones should have stopped a long time ago don’t like Lady Gaga without Bill and Charlie it’s not the stones but that’s my opinion the whole band should just retire form another band do something different but this thing with the stones we’ll it’s no longer the band we all love now there just a brand a name a money making pit
Mike - I know you don't think the Stones should've existed past Bill Wyman, even though in their heyday, Bill Wyman didn't even appear on much of their studio albums (Goats Head Soup for one example). The band has changed drastically over the decades. Brian Jones to the Mick Taylor years is a completely different band and sound. The Ron Wood years after that also very different. After Charlie passed away, I figured they should go out in a blaze of glory - put out an amazing album (or two). Do a goodbye tour (something that the Stones have never done - credits to them for never playing that card). and then call it a day. But there is no doubt, there seems to be a huge new vitality with Andrew Watt and the singles Angry and Sweet Sounds Of Heaven. Since Bill Wyman voluntarily left the band, they've released a lot of great music and performed incredible tours. Our music legends are passing away all the time. I can see it somewhat. Of course like you said much cleaner tech. And Jagger's vocals are loud, clear and way up in the mix - opposite of Exile , but there's a spirit there.
I can see it being a slow grower for some people. I would tell them to put on the last two minutes, right after the false ending. If you don't get off on that two minutes, there's no help for you. It's extraordinarily powerful music and bigtime chill inducing.

It's very different, which is part of my love of The Stones. I always said one of the reasons that The Stones are the greatest band of all time is they can do virtually every type of music, and own it - still comes out like The Rolling Stones. These two examples are so polar opposite in style - yet....there you go. Incredible. Angry is a blistering rocking Stones classic to be (hopefully). The last two minutes of Sweet Sounds Of Heaven - is stunningly incredible. Perhaps check it out that way and go backwards....just a thought. Best Alan
So funny - I just commented on another comment about GaGa and Gimme Shelter and how it was very good but not in the same league as Lisa Fischer. I'm sure Lisa Fischer would've done an amazing job as well....but she didn't do it...lol And GaGa delivers incredibly on the new song.
I agree with all but one point. I don't agree that Lady Gaga is what took this song to the next level at all. In fact, as a lifetime Stones fan, I think she takes away from it. Yes, her performance is great for who she is, but she's not a Stone, and pure Stones has never been lacking. I'd love to hear this without her. That was my initial thought, and it's my thought still after listening three times. I love it, but I believe I'd love it more.
Interesting. Mick sings the first verse on his own. I find it good. But for me the song takes off to another plane when GaGa joins in. Nothing wrong with that. Can't Always Get What You Want goes to another level with the choir. And of course, Gimme Shelter goes "nuclear" with Merry Clayton's touch. Same applies here, at least to me.
Ouch. I don't know any of Lady GaGa's music except A Star Is Born. But seriously she kills it in this song. I actually think she's a key to it's success. It would have been very good. But she made it extraordinary...at least to my ears. Perhaps it'll grow on you. The last two minutes after the false ending - that's some seriously chill inducing music....to me
This is a great song period! Everything about it is strong. Production is nothing without great material and performances and this song has them in spades!!!!! This song stands with any soul/blues song the Stones have ever done, it will have a long life.

I adore this song and Mick's vocals, plus classic lyrics.
Awesome - apparently it's set a record for most Rolling Stones streams in one day. Pretty awesome.
Hi Alan, I agree its a masterpiece.
Thanks so much!
What u think about gimme shelter ft lady gaga?
Cheers Doug
Thanks Doug - wow - that's a fantastic reference. I can totally hear that and agree with that. Yea - awesome comparison!!! Thanks again.
Good evening Alan I agree with you on the stones sweet sounds of heaven I Just heard the song and it fantastic for me it had that deep feeling of emotion coming from the sound! From Terry M. in Erie Pennsylvania

Your review is perfect..I was worried about mick over singing as well . Thanks you Andrew Watt!
Thanks so much. I"m glad to see others, like yourself, concerned about Mick's "oversinging". For awhile, I thought it was just me. Thank you Andrew Watt indeed - so well said. Thanks.
Agree about the endings to both tracks released so far. Keep up the great work Alan

Incredible release…”Angry” was fun/exciting but this song absolutely epic.

Excellent review. I 💜 this epic song!
Thanks so much - yes it is epic - love that - great description - it truly is epic. Thanks.
Alan, I was at the 89' Atlantic City shows, in your opinion are is the 4LP set worth getting soundwise >? I need guitars out front ! Thx Randall
I could listen to you talk Stones all day...looking forward to your Hackney Diamonds thoughts October 20

I imagine on a full blown stereo will be incredible. I can’t wait too. Angry still sounds fantastic. The mark of a great track. Has legs.

“Miasma of sound”. What a great way of putting it. Exactly!! 🤩👍
Thanks so much. Came to me live, unscripted...it really is though. Thanks again.
The playing is on another level on this.I can take or leave Gaga though.
I think you are in the huff because Mick asked Lady G to sing on the track 😢
@@IanBillen makes sense.
I am another one of those people who thought of YCAGWYW and Shine A Light when I heard this song. I also thought of Salt Of The Earth the same way.
Salt of The Earth is another good example - the ending of it of course. Shine A Light is one of my all time favorite songs - great guitar solo and one of the greatest Jagger vocals of all time. This song is in some very good company..
I love this song👏👏👏👏
Thanks so much - me too. Spectacular. Best, Alan
To me, it has “Heaven” from Tattoo You vibes. Thoughts?
I love the song.
Thanks - me too.
The new album is looking very promising based on the excellence of the first two tracks. I don't remember being this interested in a new Stones album.

Thanks Tom.
A song by jagger and richards in 2023 has no right to be that good.

Let's celebrate and enjoy the great music they can release while we have the opportunity, because we won't at some point. @@mikebarooshian7255

It's not as good as "Angry". This song is ok.
Best Alan
I think Lisa Fisher would have done better than Gaga, same with gimme shelter…
For me a big crap, don,t like lady gaga
