    The ugliest but most gorgeous plane ever to launch off a carrier!!!! Mental design, iffy wings, but a massively capable machine!! Along with the Buccaneer, a massive favourite of.mine

    Magnificent! She was a proper unit, the Gannet, and you've caught the essence of her. That neat RN colour scheme again, too.....👌🏻👏🏻👍🏻

    Up until the early 90's there was a Gannet used as a Gate Guardian at RAF Lossiemouth (formally RNAS Fulmar). Sat alongside this hefty beast was a Buccaneer and a Shackleton
    . Quite a sight! Great video as always!

      Oh how I would’ve loved to have seen that! I’m sure it was a rather intimidating Gate Guardian with its “chunkiness”, thanks for the comment😁🤙🏻

    Nice job! If my Gannet looks half as good as yours I'll be very happy. I've still got a long way to go, my next step is assembling the interior once I've done some drybrushing on it so you can actually see some of the detail!

    Some of the bulkier aircraft really do look better in a bigger scale. The recent buccaneer is a similar example . The first time I saw a gannet live, I could not believe how deep the fuselage was. This scale really does it justice. You have to love ship borne craft for their sheer toughness!

    I enjoyed your build and you have sold me on the idea of building one. These things take me back to family holidays in Devon and Cornwall when I was young. If we were lucky our holidays coincided with an Open Day at RNAS Culdrose, RAF Chivenor or St Mawgan. Fairey Gannets were regular visitors to these events. I enjoyed seeing them fly. I always thought of them as being safe, solid and dependable aircraft. Yes, they do look a bit chunky but some of us do prefer a bit of wood on the tree and something quieter.
    Three bits of trivia:
    1. Sorry to be a spotter but the Fairey Gannet had two engines, each driving its own co-axially mounted propeller. So not really a contra-rotating propellor.
    2. They were not invasion stripes but recognition stripes applied to aircraft operating in the 1956 Suez crisis.
    3. The RN were hell bent on getting rid of nasty, dangerous, explosive aviation spirit (petrol) from their carriers. So jet engines and gas turbines using relatively safe kerosene were the future but…. these things were started with a gas generator burning, of all things, Avpin. This is a highly volatile liquid mono-fuel or in other words an explosive. Therefore armourers had to look after its storage and dispensing.

    About 1992 I was with REME and attached to an British Army unit who were covering a rather special air base and beside where I was working was a Fairy Gannet parked up on the grass. Talking to the Squadron Leader who was my boss he told me he actually flew it on it's last flight to this base before it was grounded and a lot of parts removed. Interesting to hear some of the aircraft The Gannet is certainly very distinctive and easily recognisable with it's two propellers..
    I agree she is a very chunky bird but there is an elegance in her ugliness.

    Nice job on your Gannet. It's an airframe I've always been fond of for some reason. Airfix look to have done a great job of their offering. I'm hoping for an AEW version before I pull the trigger but it is very tempting

    • @machmodels
      @machmodels  5 місяців тому

      Thank you sir! I’d love to see the AEW variant as well, even uglier but greater in my opinion! You can never have too many kits😆

    nice quick build - looks great - still a pain re seat belts... hey-ho.... also love the weathering of the black (doogs models call this 'stage paint' - so while not 'accurate' makes for a better model....

    • @machmodels
      @machmodels  5 місяців тому

      Thank you mate! Yup, seatbelts I think are always going to be this issue that manufacturers have... but as you say 'hey-ho'! Glad you like the weathering, really simple yet effective way to break up that dull black!

    Great Job. I have a real fondness for the Gannet ever since I was a kid and saw her displayed at a Navy day in Portsmouth, UK. Some say she is an ugly aircraft but I say she is unique and significant.

    Great build, and newly subbed! Re the nose weight box, there is a part, A5, not mentioned in the instructions. This would appear to be another "weight box" that fits under the cockpit forward of the weapons bay bulkhead, A9. It doesn't appear to exceed the weight position limit shown in an inset in step 23.

      @machmodels  5 місяців тому

      Thank you very much! Hope you enjoy the content. Well how about that, shame that the instructions didn’t point it out but for next gannet build it’ll make it a hell of a lot easier! Thanks for the comment😁

    I’m the kind of modeler whose interest in accuracy amounts to exactly zilch, as long as it looks awesome. Let me tell you my life is significantly less stressful. I’ll happily paint an American cockpit soviet turquoise if I so decide, enjoying every bit of anger my actions induce to the 1000% accuracy crowd.

    Love The Gannet, used to watch them at White Waltham from the Fairy works. I’m a bit disappointed there isn’t a wings folded option with a kit this size.

    • @machmodels
      @machmodels  5 місяців тому +1

      I’m very jealous! There sure is a wings folded option, I just chose not to use is as I wanted to show off the sheer size of the wings! Airfix captured the Bi-Fold mechanism incredibly well, so well that it made me get another one so that I can display one with wings folded🤣

    Hi Mach Models I am thinking about getting this kit I was wondering when doing this model did you have any fitting problems and such as what white do you use since I am having trouble on trying to find a good white to aurbrush and brush paint

    • @machmodels
      @machmodels  5 місяців тому

      Hi dude! I would say that this kit is for a modeller who has made quite a few kits, that’s purely because it has a hell of a lot of parts which all need to be put into place perfectly to ensure a good fit. If you can get all the parts in correctly the kit will go together with no issues at all, the one area I had a little bit of problem would be nose area but that was sorted out just using some white putty! In regard to a white, I love to use the SMS white. Super good coverage and lovely finish. I hope that helps!
