Whenever I see videos such as this, I'm awestruck by what it must have taken to build the enormous structures they did. The engineering skills of so many craftsmen. Settling the hundreds of stairs, especially those in very tight spaces. How they ran fireplaces to so many locations. It overwhelms me. I know they also built magnificent cathedrals, but the complexity of a castle like this must have required workmen just as skilled. Thank you for this excellent video.

I'm so pleased you went to Old Wardour. Firstly because my late father played there as a boy in the 30s when staying in the nearby farmhouse and secondly because I'm a HUGE fan of Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, probably my all time favourite film which I've seen over twenty times. Great video thank you so much for taking us on a tour, I have a few pics of when my sister and I did a pilgrimage but your video is a real treasure. I'm eager to see where else you go on your Robin Hood tour.. I've been to Burnham Beeches and happened by pure chance when on holiday to find myself beside Aysgarth Falls in Yorkshire where Robin fought Little John, I recognised it straight away.

This is so amazing! The amount of wealth they had to have a castle like this in its grandness to be built and even though it was blown up after all this time its still standing to this day. Just shows you these building will always be there as they are made of stone which makes them ever lasting. Buildings made today just don't come anywhere near the craftsmanship of these structures that were constructed so long ago. Thank you for sharing, so interesting seeing historical buildings.

And the days of a man called Guy Falks who attempted to blow up.the parliament were crazy times .Thanks for sharing these magnificent remains of what was once a Castle to envy and now an empty shell with a tragic ending.
This castle is absolutely breathtaking!!.. the huge fire place in the kitchen is the largest l have ever seen and that dining hall with those huge tall windows. They used to cover the floors with rushes and throw their meat to the wolf hounds. Thank you for showing us this. I know this sounds crazy , but l have often thought....even though it cost millions it would be amazing to restore one of these castles or monasteries to their original state. Many thanks....l have never been to this one.

It's really odd to think people of our stature would build such a huge elaborate structure. People tend to build things to fit their own stature that is usable. I can see much larger people needing something this size. It's an amazing tour you did and a great video ! Thank you, and please do more if you are able ! 👍 🇨🇦 ✌️
Note the direction of the spiral staircases. As most people are right handed they were designed this way to allow free motion with the sword for the defenders of the castle while invaders had to switch their sword to their left hand as they tried to ascend the stairs. This gave a distinct advantage to those defending the castle.
@@crazykev6491 No, unfortunately. We were there two weeks and started in Dublin, up to Belfast, over to Galway, then Cork, and back to Dublin. We ran out of time that day. We saw a lot of castles and the girlfriend’s itinerary was 43 pages, so each day was packed with stops. Lol

The English Civil War needs a huge series in the style of The Queen, Games of Thrones and North and South as it is all those stories and more rolled into one. Royalty, A Fugitive. Battles Castles Explosions, guns sword fights womanising everything.
One thing about the spiral staircases is that they're meant to hinder a right-handed person holding a sword going up stairs and giving advantage of someone who was right-handed holding a sword going downstairs.
It would be a nice short video if you took any external footage of New Wardour Castle. (But since it's a private residence, that may be an intrusion.) It would be interesting to see the newer architectural style.
Not every castle has both Medieval and movie history. Most of the castles used in movies are built for the movie and are taken down after filming is over. I was disappointed to find out that the tower castle used in the 1965 Charlton Heston movie The Warlords was recently dismantled after sitting on the studio grounds for so many years.
Well they preserved our family heritage in the Howard castle Greek Italy Spain Scott and I think France" actually had some experience in my ancestors but they tried stealing it so I stayed lower than low on this
Can you imagine that Grotto lit up at night with candles (I think thats what they did in those aka "follys" just built for fun, maybe during a Ball, people would hang out there to take a break from 💃dancing. Some were a mini version of the Castle or home, or one Lord had his built to hang out in, later he instructed that he wanted to be buried there, (except seated in a chair behind the main decor).🤔🤷♀️
I believe but I could be wrong all stairs, like in majority of castles, were designed to be narrow, steep and spiral so the occupants can defend from the top downwards in a sword fighting scenario.

I conserve and repair buildings such as these in Scotland. They really had some amazingly clever techniques and were so far ahead of their time.

The architecture is a wonder and so beautiful. Time softens the edges. It is a lovely location. I'm glad I'm not the cook!

Was in Ireland in July. So many of their castles are major tourist attractions and cost money to enter. I’m surprised this one isn’t.
