  • I'm sorry that this has been so long coming - despite the extra free time on my hands due to the COVID 19 world-wide lockdown I was finding it hard to get anything going. However, I did more or less finish up the build and wanted to share my final thoughts with everyone.
    Here's a link to the kit that I built:
    www.solomusicg...
    I'm pretty sure that the body is actually mahogany. It's listed as mahogany in the description, and it doesn't look like basswood at all. I have nothing against basswood, but it doesn't look like mahogany. I wonder if they've changed the wood?
    Edit- I watched a few reviews of other companies' 12-string guitars, and realize that I have my octave and fundamental strings on in the wrong places! I need to totally re-string the guitar. Rather than taking this video down I'm going to leave it and put up another video after I correct my mistake. If it solves my intonation issues I will apologize profusely to Solo Musical Instruments!

    I know this is an older video but I felt it necessary to comment. One, pitch out the supplied tuners as you will always have trouble with them. Two, you need a 12 string bridge, one with 12 saddles. That's the only way to get proper intonation. Three, take the supplied strings and throw them out. Junk strings only make the setup process harder to darn nigh impossible. Four, there's a Switchcraft toggle switch for the Gibby-style doublenecks that allows the use of all four pots as normal, not just a master volume & tone per neck.

    If both strings on lower strings are on the same block on the bridge, it will never be correct. Rickenbackers are the same way because the high string must be shorter than the low string for correct intonation. You can get a replacement bridge for Ric's that have 12 individual adjustable saddles to get the correct intonation for each string. It would be like looking at the 6 string saddles and you will see the low E is way further back than the high E saddle. So if you only have one saddle for each pair of strings, you must split the difference in intonation between the big and little strings.Of course this only is for the E A D G strings. the B and high E are the same gauge strings, so they are not a problem. Hope this makes sense, as it is a bit hard to describe. Bottom line is that for 4 of the 6 you will need individual string saddles to ever get intonation fixed.

    You can't really fault the bridge or the kit for the 12 string intonation issues. That is REALLY common with twelve stringers. As far as not recommending this as a first kit, of course. It is a double neck! I recently built one of their TL bass kits for a friend, and it was great and went together flawlessly.

    You don't need nut files to deepen nut slots. I use 220 grit sandpaper folded in half. I put a piece of double sided tape in between to widen the paper for the thicker slots and just the sandpaper for the thinner slots.

    Im a little surprised you didnt use your favorite brand of strings to begin with? Did changing the strings help?

      It's a fair question, but I wanted to use the strings that came with the kit. As it turns out, they were horrible! Changing to a good set of D'addario on the 12-string and Ernie Ball on the 6-string (I don't have a favorite brand) made a huge difference.

    Nice build Reed; that's a cool kit. If I could go so far as to give you a "tip", I think you might connect better with your audience if you try to look into the lens rather than the view finder (a tough habit to break, but I'll leave it to you to decide if it's worthwhile).

    I'm building a Solo electric 12 string myself right now, so I'll be curious to see how the tuning is on it. My experience with 12 strings has been that they're a special animal as far as that goes. I like the finish you did. Doing something unique is better than just making it look like something you could just buy. Great job, man.

      Thank you! I really need to do a follow-up video. I put a set of D'addario strings on it and it made a world of difference. The strings that came with the kit were awful. There were 12 strings, but I'm not even sure that they were actually strings for a 12-string guitar. Of course, they were 12 loose strings that looked identical other than thickness, and I had to eyeball that, so my problems might have been user error.

    The wood appears to be of good quality and all the routing is correct? Did the necks sit good in the pockets? I am interested in doing the Via Guitar at the moment.
    I Made some templates out of some MDF a couple of months ago so I can do my own. Basswood body, Maple neck w/Ebony!
    The biggest problem is getting the components such as truss rods/Fret boards and I will want to run some good Pots also. The reasoning about the Ibanez is the neck access!!! I have a Strat and I can't get to the upper frets as easy as the RG Style of guitars. 24 frets and all the access.
    Thank you for sharing,
    B

    One thing I've always wondered about with double necks like this one. There's not much clearance between the high pitched strings on the 12 string side, and the low pitched strings on the 6 string side. Is there anything preventing you from using the "banjo" style tuners like on the old Gibson Firebird that stuck straight out of the back of the headstock? Then it would be easy to use a crank string winder or just access the machines for tuning.

    • @mos6507
      @mos6507 3 роки тому

      I used steinberger gearless tuners on my custom doubleneck. They are THE solution and Gibson should use them (since they own the technology now). Gibson is just too conservative.

    I was thinking of getting this guitar kit...but 2nd guessing because of the intonation problem u were having....
    I read the comments and you said you have changed the strings...great!
    Now did the itonation correct its self for the 6 string and the 12 string with the better strings ???
    Btw....great job putting the guitar together. Always wanted a double neck guitar in my collection....

    Nice guitar, did it intonate with the new strings. I was thinking about building one but if they it can't be intonated then it's kinda useless.

      I really need to get a follow-up video done, but I'm working on another project. I can say that buying a set of good strings made a world of difference! The strings that came with the kit were simply 12 identical looking strings in a bundle that I had to guess which string was which, so there is also a chance that some of my issues were user error. A good set of D'addario strings made it vastly better! I have learned that 12-strings are still a pain to set up and intonate, but at least with the new strings it's doable.

    • @acctonmyotherphone6327
      @acctonmyotherphone6327 4 роки тому +1

      If new strings don't solve it then you could always buy a new tune o matic bridge. So no it's not useless and I think you should buy it 😉

      @@mancaveguitarpedalmania4008 it's possible that whoever programmed the CNC machine didn't understand how the frets need to be relative to one another, and even so, there is always an imperfect area on every guitar where unisons sound out of sync, usually around the 12th fret area. It isn't usually this noticeable, which makes me think that they guessed at the scale length and fret placement. I mean, if there were no frets it would play fine, right? Assuming you had a mark to know where to put your finger.
      That makes me think that the problem is the fret spacing.

    There is a knoiwn issue with 12 string guitars no being possible to properly inonate. I heard that Danelectro is one of the very few that allow each string to be inonated seperatlty. You need a bridge that has 12 seperate inonatable saddles. Look for something that can do this. www.rockinger.com/en/parts/hardware/bridges-tailpieces/gibson-style-bridges/376/duesenberg-12-string-bridge

    • @mos6507
      @mos6507 3 роки тому

      The proper one to use is an ABM 2412c. And again, Gibson should have adopted that bridge ages ago.

    Really neat, says a person who knows nothing about guitars. IMHO, the finish would have looked better if you'd applied the various stains in a more organic way, rather than the hard lines you used. But that's a personal preference, and, once again, I have made zero guitars.

      Good to hear from you, David! I agree, it could definitely look less blocky. However, I have attempted to do a more blended line, and came to the conclusion that for my extremely poor artistic abilities I'm better off with the sharp lines!

    Unfortunately the intonation problem is a plague on all 12-stringers. It's the product of an industry that refuses to move past tradition and keep using crappy TOM bridges. Personally I swapped my bridge out for a Duesenberg one that has individual saddles per string.
