I wish I saw this video several years ago. I had 6 beautiful bird of paradise for about 3 years without doing much, other than watering. The fourth year I placed them in the basement during the winter and most of the leaves got brown and dried. I left 3 plants outside the following winter, thinking that they had dies. To my surprise, 1 started shooting out new leaves the following summer. I was so happy and was upset for getting rid of the others. Up until now, I had no idea how to take care of them, so thank you so much for this video.
Hello Ann, Thank you for sharing your story. Plants are amazing! As long as the roots are healthy, they always come back. I am happy your Bird Of Paradise plants recovered and shooting new leaves for you. Hello Ann, today I noticed that my Bird of Paradise roots coming out of a big pot, even though I repotted into it 3,5 month ago! The new pot was few inches bigger than the old one. I got frustrated, should I repot it again in a bigger pot (current one is already big and heavy), and should I trim back some of the roots? 🌿
Thank you so much for all your bird of paradise videos! Too many folks show bop care for small ones but you actually addressed questions about big ones.
I’m so glad you showed how to prune leaves from the middle of the stem...every video or article I came across only showed outer stem pruning! Thank you! My BOP will be getting a makeover tomorrow!! Not plant related, but I love your outfit!!
Thank you!! I was starting to wonder if I had to get rid of my bird of paradise. I got it about 3 years ago at about 4 feet tall and it quickly grew to my ceiling of 10 feet within Two years. I just left it be and it was growing funny against my ceiling but I thought it was fine. Until I got either spider mites or something cause it was covered in white spots and also was leaving a sticky substance on my floors under it. So I took it outside (finally since it is warm enough in Minnesota) and rinsed it down good but almost immediately Two leaves snapped since they were weak. So I most definitely will be trimming it back!!
Hi! Thank you for watching! Sounds like your plant has mealybug infestation. Here is my post and video about how to deal with this issue: mycityplants.com/plant-care/how-to-get-rid-of-mealybugs/ Also, weak stems can be the result of the Bird Of Paradise plants being root bound and/or lacking some nutrients. If you have not repotted your plant in 3 years, it is time to do it now :) + feed your plant every year from March till September. You may also divide your plant and make more Bird of Paradise arrangements. :) Here are some helpful videos: When and How to Fertilize your plants mycityplants.com/fertilizers/how-to-fertilize-plants/ How to repot overgrown Bird of Paradise: mycityplants.com/plant-care/repotting-bird-of-paradise-plant-overgrown-root-bound/ How to divide Bird of Paradise plant: mycityplants.com/plant-care/how-to-divide-bird-of-paradise-plant/ ALL ABOUT Bird of Paradise care GUIDE: mycityplants.com/plant-care/bird-of-paradise-care/ Green Cheers & May your plant grow happy and healthy!
Hi, what if one of the damaged leafs that I want to cut out has a new leaf coming in at the base of it where you just showed that i would want to cut it at? I feel like the old damaged leaf may be taking nutrients away from the new growth or perhaps stalling the growth from blooming faster is that true at all? Should I cut it off a little higher so not to disrupt or damage the new stem coming in? Or should I wait until the new growth has fully bloomed out and then cut the old damaged leaf's stem where you just showed?
Hi Kayln, It is best to remove the dying leaf of your Bird Of Paradise plant so the plant is not waisting its energy and nutrients on it :). Yes, you can cut it a bit higher so the new leaf has a bit of support while it is growing. Green Luck and May your plant grow happy and healthy! 🌱
Whoa, hearing you say that your bird of paradise was too big made me realize mine was in desperate need of a prune. Our smallest leaf is actually a bit bigger than the largest one you cut out!
Awesome video. Just bought one yesterday from store. I plan to prune since it’s huge but I’m just wondering how do I know if it needs water or let it be. Or when to start watering
Hi! Thank you for watching 🌱 I use and strongly recommend using Soil Moisture Meter amzn.to/44nRMGL for establishing a proper watering frequency for your plants. You need just 1 tool for unlimited amount of plants. Here is my video about how to use this tool: bit.ly/3TI2sMb ** Water Bird of Paradise plat when the meter reading is in the 4-5 zone or below. I cut my BOP down to the base… what should I do? The roots look great but the leaves were so damaged and it wasn’t getting any growth for months. I had it near a north window but it was burning and right now I moved it to a southwest window should that help? Should I fertilize it? How often should I water it? I need help
Hello Angiee, If the roots of your Bird Of Paradise are healthy, the new leaves will grow! South/West exposure might be too strong for the plant. It is best to move it further away from the window or place it in a shady spot right next to a sunny area, or filter the light with curtains. To learn more about how to care for your plant and more, browse through our BOP playlist bit.ly/3h6j1OQ ***Here is our video about when and how to fertilize houseplants: bit.ly/3teZEaw Hope your plant will recover and grow new leaves for you soon! Help, I was carrying my bird of paradise that had two nice stalks in the pot, into the bathtub to give it a quick rinse off and a good drink and I busted one entire plant stalk off at the base of that plant. I was sick about it but it is what it is. Can you tell me if the broken stalk could possibly shoot out stalks or do I need to try to remove the roots so I do not have any problems with the good plant. The plant was a price reduced plant that has struggled but has been doing fairly well for the last 5 months. However on the broken plant there was a new shoot that just did not want to grow tall enough for the leaf to open and the first layer of the furling of the leaf was turning .Thanks, Lynn
Hello Lynn, I am sorry to learn you had this green accident. :( Keep the roots in. New shoots will grow from there! Make sure the plant is not root bound and has 3-5 inches of soil around its root system. If the pot is not wide enough or deep enough, repot! Feed your plant from March till end of September. Here is my video about when and how to fertilize houseplants: ua-cam.com/video/A0_bderVSJw/v-deo.html Keep the soil levels up. Hola! estoy tan agradecida de tus vídeos…tengo una consulta: cómo se fertilizan las plantas en macetero de riego automático? Ojalá me leas y me entiendas …saludos
I LOVED your video! It actually showed me how to prune my BOP properly. I had a few questions about the spider mites that you mentioned and the leaf turning brown. If you choose not to cut it will it spread to the other leaves and what preventive remedy can I use for future spider mites. I already use Neem oil spray a couple times of a month for mealy bugs. The last question, once you cut the leaf off and put dirt on it will you get any new growth from that cut? Do you have an email address I can send a few pictures of my leaves before I start cutting?
Hi Nicole, Thank you for watching! 1. Here is the video about how to treat spider mites: bit.ly/30dWAQo *** Use this treatment until the issue is gone or down to minimum. Then switch to Neem Oil. Do not use this treatment for too long as it might burn leaves. 2. If you have mealybug problem, watch my video here: bit.ly/33uyseF 3. New leaves grow from the center of each stem between top 2 leaves. New leaf will not grow from the cut. Green Luck!!
Hi! Unfortunately, BOP leaves can not be used for propagation. You may place them in water in a vase for decoration. They do last a long time in the water but will not grow roots for you. If at some point you decide to propagate your plant or grew one from a seed, here is a helpful article: bit.ly/3dMlPAz Green Luck! 🌱
Every year I make a New Year resolution to deepen the shade of green on my thumbs. 🤣 🤣 🤣 In the summer of 2022, I think I had actually reached the color green. 😄 I'm trying to keep the color going so I appreciate finding your video to help with that. Thank you. Your video was very informative. I will check out the others for sure.
Can you use the the leaves you cut off to propagate the plant to make a new one? Also the leaves on my bird of paradise are curling, am I doing something wrong?
Hi! Thank you for watching. - Most of the time, curling leaves are the result of dehydration. To keep this plant happy: Ensure the plant receives a good amount of bright light, and regular misting (best to have a humidifier nearby). Do not allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Provide nutrients during spring and summer, + the pot should have drainage. If you are doing all this and the plant is still suffering, check for pests and diseases. - Unfortunately, I am not an expert on propagation 😀. Green Luck! 🌱
Hi Michaela, Yes, you can trim leaves. Try to figure out why this is happening first. Most likely, this is the result of watering issue. If you do not make adjustments, the leaves will continue browning after you trim them. Watch this video (from 7:16) to learn what this plant needs to be happy: ua-cam.com/video/raJaPyI0_bo/v-deo.html Green Luck, and thanks for watching 🌱
Hi! Just my personal preference. I like my plants be clean, orderly and tidy. Straight cuts make plants look butchered, in my opinion:) 😀 Thank you for watching 🌱
Hi Juliette, I'm wondering if the BOP will send out shorter stemes if I'm pruning back leaves that are very tall? or will the leaves continue to get taller? I don't have a lot of mid-level growth on my plant after pruning back the damaged leaves, and I would like it become less top heavy.
Hi Emily, New leaves will grow from the center of the stem. They will be shorter at the beginning but will continue to grow. :) The only way to keep the Bird Of Paradise plant at the desired height is to prune back/remove the tallest leaves when they grow to tall. Green Cheers 🌱
Hi Monique, I don't think you should be concerned. Most likely, this is just the "juice" from the cut. Cover the cut with the soil to help it heal faster. Green Luck 🪴
CAN YOU PLEASE TELL ME HOW TO TRIM MY PLANT IF THE STOCK IS STILL ALIVE BUT THE LEAF IS CURLED UP BROWN AND DEAD? I LEARNED SO MUCH FROM YOUR VIDEO TODAY THAT I'M GOING TO SUBSCRIBE IMMEDIATELY. LOL THANK YOU..... TERRYLEE I DON'T KNOW HOW TO MAKE IT FATTER OR BUSH OUT EITHER, I ONLY HAVE FIVE STOCKS ALL TOGETHER AND ONE OF THEM IS THE DEAD LEAF WITH THE LIVING STEM.... thank you in advance TerryLee
Hi Terrylee, Thank you for watching. - Dying leaf should be cut out where the leaf stem is attached to the main stem. - Bird of Paradise grows new leaves form the top. The plant grows fairly fast, especially during Spring/Summer. - Make sure the pot has drainage! - Establish a proper watering frequency. Allow the top soil to dry out as deep as you can test it with your finger. *** I strongly recommend getting the Soil Moisture Meter. This tool will help you to understand when your plant is ready for a drink to avoid over or under watering. Meter can be purchased here: bit.ly/2yuXVpc - Use a pencil, chopsticks or something similar to fluff up the soil around the plant to allow oxygen to get to the roots to help the plant to stabilize. Stick pencil into the soil as deep as possible and move it clockwise, repeat in a few spots. - If more leaves will start to curl and dye - re-pot the plant. Green Luck! 🌱
Do bird of paradise keep sending out new shoots of leaves/branches after you cut them? Is it limitless or will it stop producing new leaves and branches at some point?
Hi! Yes, plant will continue growing new leaves after pruning. With the proper care and growing in the right environment, these plants live for many many years! 🌱
Thanks for sharing your information. Can I cut the leaves all time a year or just in certain month? Mine got way to big and needs to be pruned as soon as possible
Hi Cintia, Thank you for watching 🌱 If you are pruning your plant back all the way to the soil level, cut it 2"-3" or so above the soil level. Use sharp knife or a pruning saw to make a nice and clean cut. ***Don't forget to sterilize tools with the rubbing alcohol before use. If the roots are healthy, soon the new leaf will poke out in the middle of the cut stem. Green Luck!
So helpful - thank you! If you need to reduce the size of the plant overall, I would imagine you would need to cut the roots back too when you repot, right? (My living space is changing and I need to change the plant to a smaller planter.)
I can try to Google this but I was just curious where you make the cuts on the bird of paradise, I don't think you mentioned...Will new stems grow with new leaves where we cut? I'm going to give mine a big pruning! It has so many damaged leaves from being near the front door and getting hit by the door or hit by us walking by and now it's right outside the door on my front porch because the weather is beautiful now being spring, but I guess I'm going to give it a pretty heavy pruning, I was glad to see your video! Ty
Hi! Thank you for watching! Leaves of Bird Of Paradise should be pruned/cut close to the main stem. New leaves grow from the center, between the stems. Hope your plant will grow you many new leaves while spending warm days outdoors. Green Cheers!
My bird of paradise is getting very big with a lot of leafs.. I was wondering why you cut it at that location at that angel, is that to prevent it from getting new leafs or is it to allow it to grow new leafs? i read somewhere if you cut it too low, it will prevent it from growing new leafs, but i want to to keep growing.
Hi! Thank you for watching! Angle cut is mostly for the esthetic purpose - so the cut blends in with the main stem and does not look chopped. You can make a cut a bit higher to ensure there is a bit of support for a new leaf when it starts to grow. Green Cheers & May your Bird of Paradise plant grow happy and healthy!
I have had this bird of paradise for around 3 years and it has been re potted, each winter it flowers but the first year there was 15 flowers then the second 10 flowers and then this year only 7 and im getting worried about it, it has also been moved when potted from a very light greenhouse area to just a single window. i use a super feed and clean and spay leaves all the time. what can i do to encourage it or help it as i feel it may be slipping away... its around 30 years old and is around 7ft tall
Hi Jonny, Woohoo! Sounds like you are taking a very good care of your plant. The change in light exposure might be the reason why the plant is not blooming as much. Be very careful not to over fertilize the plant and make sure the pot is big enough + has drainage. Green Luck and thank you for watching 🌱
Hi! Thank you for watching! I do not have any experience with caring for plants outdoors and, unfortunately, can not provide you with a proper advise. Green Cheers!
Hi! Yes, you may trim the brown edges. If browning continues after leaves are trimmed, the watering routine should be be analyzed and adjusted. Best to use the Soil Moisture Meter amzn.to/3KXQVFi for establishing a proper watering frequency for your Bird Of paradise plant. How to use this tool video: bit.ly/3TI2sMb Water the plant when the meter reading should in the 4-5 zone. Green Cheers & Thank you for watching!
Hi! This tube is part of the sub-irrigation system of Lechuza planters. It is a water level indicator for the water reservoir. You can purchase these smart planters here: amzn.to/3zLDWDH Green Cheers & Thank you for watching!
Just came across your channel. Really like you explanations on BOP's. Had a question to ask - I broke my BOP new leaf after it just unfurled while watering. Needed to know if the stem would still continue growing and a new leaf will grow.
I am learning-so much from your videos! Thank you thank you thank you! I don’t know if I can ask a question in this comment section, but I will try. I live in the northeast where it’s getting very cold, so I brought my large white bird of paradise inside. Is it OK to prune it now (like you showed on the video, there are several dead leaves and split leaves but also some very healthy ones), or should I wait till spring? I know it’s supposed to go dormant over the winter. Thank you for any advice!
Hi! Thank you for watching! I am glad the videos are helpful. Yes, you can cut off bad leaves of your bird Of Paradise plant now. May your plant grow happy and healthy! Green Cheers!
Hi! Great question! When you cut a damaged leaf at the base, that specific leaf won’t grow back. However, new leaves will continue to grow from the center of the plant, emerging between the existing leaves, so you can expect fresh growth in time even after removing the damaged leaf. Thank you for watching! Green Cheers!
Thank you, very helpful. Can I ask what that little glass tube was in the pot? Also wondering if you need a saucer under the pot for this plant as I’ve heard root rot can be a problem
Hi Dylan, Thank you for watching 🌱 - Plastic tube is the water level indicator. Shows you how much water you have in the water reservoir. You can watch our videos about these pots here bit.ly/3FBJIp4 - No, you do not need a saucer. - Root rot happens only if not enough time provided for the soil to dry between refilling the reservoir. Here is my video about how to water plants in these Lechuza self-watering planters: bit.ly/3bWSmRs Green Cheers!
How did you plant your BOP (drainage holes, saucer on the bottom, etc.) ? I have a decorative vase with no drainage holes and would like to be able to place my birds of paradise in the decorative vase the same as yours.
Hi Alexandra, The planter I am using in the video comes with inner pot that goes into the planter's cover. You can see these self-watering planters here: mycityplants.com/collections/planters If you with to place your Bird of Paradise plant inside the decorative pot, make sure to add a layer of rocks (2-3") at the bottom to provide a space for the water to run to after each watering and avoid the plant to sit in water. Amazon has lots of rocks you can order for your plants amzn.to/3oumcnH If you wish to learn more about BOP care, here is our playlist: bit.ly/3h6j1OQ May your plant grow happy and heathy! Hi Rosie, Removing the bad leaf will not affect the new leaf growth. Just make sure not to cut the bad leaf too close to the new one. Once the new leaf develops, you will be able to remove the rest of the bad stem. Green Luck. Thank yo for watching 🌱
hey i need help, i was just relaxing in my room and a leaf from my plant had fallen and the stem is bent now, and i have no idea what to do at the stem it bent and now the leaf won’t stand straight ( it is a very tall stem and i think the weight of it made it fall)
Hi Kai, Thank you for watching! 🌱 The reasons why this happened: - Pot too small or not deep enough - Not enough light - Lack of drainage - Plant needs nutrients The folding leave should be cut off. You may want to support other big stems. Here is the video about how to add support: bit.ly/3inszEo Green Luck!
How long does it take for the leaves to regrow after they've been cut? I cut mine weeks ago but they look the same. Do they regrow or do new leaves come from the stem only?
Hi! The new leaf will grow from between the stems not from the cut. It will take sometime 😀 If you have not fertilized your plant this year, you may start not and feed it till end of September. Here is our video about when and how to fertilize houseplants: bit.ly/3teZEaw Green Luck and may your Bird Of Paradise plant grow happy and healthy! 🌱
If Strelitzia is too tall I ll have to prune the tallest (newest) leaves, and that would mean ending the growth? cause new leaves only growing from the top ones, what to do to control its height..?
Hi! Thank you for watching! You may prune your Bird Of Paradise plant back to get it into the desired height and width. New leaves grow form the center of the stem, between the leaves, so cutting back the tallest leaf will not stop the growth of a new one. Here is my complete guide about how to care for BOP: mycityplants.com/plant-care/bird-of-paradise-care/ Green Cheers & May your plant grow happy and healthy!
@@Mycityplants thank you so much for the kind answer and the link💚 So I can prune the new tallest leaves to control the height and it will not stop the growth.
I recently bought a large white bird of paradise but it is a little beaten from the cold wind here in London. All the leaves are dry, brown and crispy. Is it best to cut them all off? Thank you in advance
Hi Natalie, Yes, best to remove those leaves. Once Spring comes, the plant (with proper care and good light exposure) will grown many new leaves for you. 😀 Green Luck and Thank you for watching! 🌱
Hi Kathy, Thank you for watching! 🌱 Plants love these! We sell self-watering planters in our online shop: mycityplants.com/collections/planters Planters come from Germany and we are experiencing some delays. Hoping to get all back in stock next month.
Hi Jacob, New leaves grow from between the stems. Cutting a leaf /pruning plant does not affect or stop the plant from growing new leaves. Thank you for watching 🌱

Hiii . I need a huge advise here asap. I was on the process of transferring my one year old purchased bird of paradise plant. During this process i broke the whole plant base from the roots. Please tell me what to do now. Can i still save it?
Hi! Thank you for watching. The new leaf will grow from the center of the stem, between the other leaves. Therefore, cutting a leaf off a Bird of Paradise plant will not affect the growth of a new leaf. Green Cheers! 🌱
Thanks but it would have been helpful to explain why you should cut it on an angle. Now I don't know whether to prune my small BOP with dark spots on an angle or straight.
My new leaf's stem was damaged and I kept it going and staked but it was not doing well, not growing so I cut the new stem, did I kill my Bird of Paradise palm?
amazing plant The strange thing is that the bird of paradise is one of the most expensive plants!!? I do not know why?! I live in the eastern countries of in Iraq and the weather is long and hot. The farmers advised me not to cover the bird of paradise until it adapts to the heat and becomes strong? Is this possible?
Hi Saif, Indirect or partial sun exposure is the best for this plant. If you can find a nice shady spot near the sunny area, your plant will thrive and be very happy! Green Luck! Thank you for watching 🌱
Hi Cliten, Thank you for watching. Houseplants should typically be pruned at the beginning of the growing season - early Spring. However, I have pruned indoor plants throughout a year. The most growth of new leaves happens during Spring and Summer. You will not see lots of new leaves during Winter but some might show up even during this time of the year. Green Luck!
Hi! You will want to cut the spent bloom at the flower’s base. You also want to cut the stalk to which the bloom is attached to, as long as there is no other flower already developing on that very same stalk. Green Luck and Thank you for watching 🌱
Hi, Are you talking about Bird Of Paradise plant? In any case, make sure the plant is watered properly and the pot has drainage. Check the roots - if any rotting, re-pot asap. Before re-potting cut out all damaged roots. Check out my video about how to save an over-watered plant and how to prevent this issue: ua-cam.com/video/W_6f2o30oFk/v-deo.html Green Luck! 🌱
I see... Unfortunately, am not an expert on gardening. Plants in pots is my expertise. 😀 I hope you will find an answer and your plant will recover and thrive. Green Luck! 🌱
Hi! Bird Of Paradise plants grow leaves from the center, between the leaves. Pruning does not interfere with leaf growth :) Pruning is good for plants as it stimulates new growth and makes roots stronger! Green Cheers & Thank you for watching ! 🌱
I'm concerned for my bird of paradise. One section of the plant had a nasty case of root rot. I removed that particular section to the roots, and pruned a few older leaves. It IS winter, so I know growth is slow. Hoping it picks back up :( Thank you for the video! Did not know to run some soil into the cut area.
Hi Liv, Sounds like you took the right approach! Watch my video about how to save an overwatered plant and prevent this issue: bit.ly/3qtI1T6 If you need to re-pot your plant, this is the potting mix I use and recommend: bit.ly/2SumKuf You may also use our plant food (we ship it nationwide) to help the plant to recover and get stronger: bit.ly/35qzXtf *** All-natural, no chemicals, and very gentle formula. Can be used any time during the year. 1 Tablespoon per 1 gallon of water. Green Luck and thank you for watching! 🌱
I am so glad to find your videos! I have watched all your bird of paradise video!!!! Started trimming and corrected my watering. I have had lots of success with new leaves through the winter season but since the last extremely large leaf unfurled, the rest of the leaves started to get curly. The new large Leaf has curly edges too. I know she's not happy but I m confused between whether it is nutrients deficiency, improper watering or root bound. How can I tell the difference? Thank you!!
Hi Queenie, Thank you for watching! 🌱 1. If you have the plant for over 6 months, it needs vitamins. If you are in the US, I would recommend the plant food I use: bit.ly/35qzXtf *** any other fertilizer - use half of the recommended amount. Watch my video about fertilizing here: bit.ly/3teZEaw 2. When to re-pot/ bigger pot. - If you noticed that the soil dries out too fast, and you need to water the plant more often; - if there is no soil between the pot's wall and the roots; - if the roots are sticking out the drainage hole. New pot should be 3'-5' larger. *** Plants in a bright light space, grow roots faster. On average - Plants need to be repotted once every 2-3 years. 3. Make sure to use enough water so the soil gets well saturated, and the lower roots are reached. 4. Test the soil once every 7-10 days as deep as you can. If the soil feels dry, water the plant. ***This Tool will help you to test the soil at the lower levels and establish a proper watering frequency: bit.ly/2yuXVpc 5. Pot should have drainage! 6. Keep the soil levels up to the pot's edge. Hope this will help to get your plant back into a vibrant state. Wishing you lots of green luck!!!
@@Mycityplants Thank You Juliette for your response! Looking forward to my next plant day!!! I am in Canada so doesn't seem like I can get that plant food here. :( I got her last fall. So I m glad to know it's not too early too repot her. I can see roots building up via the drainage holes but not sticking out but I haven't examined how root bound she is yet. I saw your one video with the giant plant thinking I was far from that and thought I was ok 😆😅 I always bottom watered until moisture was around 5-6 (once a week). Dialed to 7-8 since I watched your videos. Now that it's nicer out, I took it outside to shower the leaves and thoroughly soak the soil and let everything drain before bringing it back. I tried to keep the soil higher but it definitely doesn't stay that way for 7 days perhaps that's because there is not enough soil! Thank you for all your tips! I will give you an update!!! Stay safe!!
Hi! We provide plant care all year around and prune plants when needed no matter the season (for indoor houseplants). Green Cheers! Thank you for watching 🌱

Also, weak stems can be the result of the Bird Of Paradise plants being root bound and/or lacking some nutrients.
If you have not repotted your plant in 3 years, it is time to do it now :) + feed your plant every year from March till September.
You may also divide your plant and make more Bird of Paradise arrangements. :)

Hi Kayln,
It is best to remove the dying leaf of your Bird Of Paradise plant so the plant is not waisting its energy and nutrients on it :).
Yes, you can cut it a bit higher so the new leaf has a bit of support while it is growing.

I cut my BOP down to the base… what should I do? The roots look great but the leaves were so damaged and it wasn’t getting any growth for months. I had it near a north window but it was burning and right now I moved it to a southwest window should that help? Should I fertilize it? How often should I water it? I need help
Hello Angiee,
If the roots of your Bird Of Paradise are healthy, the new leaves will grow!
South/West exposure might be too strong for the plant. It is best to move it further away from the window or place it in a shady spot right next to a sunny area, or filter the light with curtains.

Hello Lynn,
I am sorry to learn you had this green accident. :(
Keep the roots in. New shoots will grow from there!
Make sure the plant is not root bound and has 3-5 inches of soil around its root system.
If the pot is not wide enough or deep enough, repot!
Feed your plant from March till end of September.

Hi Caitlin,
Glad it was helpful! Green Luck!!!!
Hi Nicole,
Thank you for watching!
1. Here is the video about how to treat spider mites: bit.ly/30dWAQo
*** Use this treatment until the issue is gone or down to minimum. Then switch to Neem Oil.
Do not use this treatment for too long as it might burn leaves.
2. If you have mealybug problem, watch my video here: bit.ly/33uyseF
3. New leaves grow from the center of each stem between top 2 leaves. New leaf will not grow from the cut.

Hello!
Question here! Can we root a discarded cut we take after pruning in order to propagate the plant like we can do with Monstera or Ficus?
Thanks
Hi!
Unfortunately, BOP leaves can not be used for propagation. You may place them in water in a vase for decoration. They do last a long time in the water but will not grow roots for you.
If at some point you decide to propagate your plant or grew one from a seed, here is a helpful article: bit.ly/3dMlPAz

Thank you for watching & May your plants grow happy and healthy! 🌱
Can you use the the leaves you cut off to propagate the plant to make a new one? Also the leaves on my bird of paradise are curling, am I doing something wrong?
Hi! Thank you for watching.
- Most of the time, curling leaves are the result of dehydration.
To keep this plant happy:
Ensure the plant receives a good amount of bright light, and regular misting (best to have a humidifier nearby).
Do not allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings.
Provide nutrients during spring and summer, + the pot should have drainage.
If you are doing all this and the plant is still suffering, check for pests and diseases.
- Unfortunately, I am not an expert on propagation 😀.

What if the leafy edges of stem are browning? Can I cut off the brown part or will that hurt the plant?
Hi Michaela,
Yes, you can trim leaves. Try to figure out why this is happening first. Most likely, this is the result of watering issue. If you do not make adjustments, the leaves will continue browning after you trim them. Watch this video (from 7:16) to learn what this plant needs to be happy: ua-cam.com/video/raJaPyI0_bo/v-deo.html

What if the center leaf or main stem has been cut? Will it recover and continue to grow? The second stem from the center has also been cut.
Hi Bri,
Thank you for watching 💚
As long as there are healthy roots, the plant will continue to grow 🌱
Hi Juliette, I'm wondering if the BOP will send out shorter stemes if I'm pruning back leaves that are very tall? or will the leaves continue to get taller? I don't have a lot of mid-level growth on my plant after pruning back the damaged leaves, and I would like it become less top heavy.
Hi Emily,
New leaves will grow from the center of the stem. They will be shorter at the beginning but will continue to grow. :)
The only way to keep the Bird Of Paradise plant at the desired height is to prune back/remove the tallest leaves when they grow to tall.
Green Cheers 🌱
In my experience, if your plant is leggy (meaning, to grow awkwardly long stems) the only way to get shorter growth is to increase light.
Hi I recently prunes my bird of paradise very close to the base. Today I noticed that the part I cut looked wet. Should I be concerned?
Hi Monique,
I don't think you should be concerned.
LOL
THANK YOU..... TERRYLEE
I DON'T KNOW HOW TO MAKE IT FATTER OR BUSH OUT EITHER, I ONLY HAVE FIVE STOCKS ALL TOGETHER AND ONE OF THEM IS THE DEAD LEAF WITH THE LIVING STEM.... thank you in advance
TerryLee
Hi Terrylee,
Thank you for watching.
Meter can be purchased here: bit.ly/2yuXVpc
- Use a pencil, chopsticks or something similar to fluff up the soil around the plant to allow oxygen to get to the roots to help the plant to stabilize.
Stick pencil into the soil as deep as possible and move it clockwise, repeat in a few spots.
- If more leaves will start to curl and dye - re-pot the plant.

Do bird of paradise keep sending out new shoots of leaves/branches after you cut them? Is it limitless or will it stop producing new leaves and branches at some point?

What if I have to cut the main stem? How should I do that?
Hi Cintia,
Thank you for watching 🌱
If you are pruning your plant back all the way to the soil level, cut it 2"-3" or so above the soil level.
Hi Julie!
You can. You can also divide your plant and pot divided parts in smaller pots.

Hi! Thank you for watching!
Leaves of Bird Of Paradise should be pruned/cut close to the main stem.
New leaves grow from the center, between the stems.
Hope your plant will grow you many new leaves while spending warm days outdoors.

Beautiful plants! So what happens after where u cut it? Does another stem grow?
Hi! Thank you for watching. The new leaf will grow from the center of the stem. Pruning does not stop it from happening :) Green Cheers!

Hi Jonny,
Woohoo! Sounds like you are taking a very good care of your plant.
The change in light exposure might be the reason why the plant is not blooming as much.

Yes, you can cut off bad leaves of your bird Of Paradise plant now.
May your plant grow happy and healthy! Green Cheers!
When cutting damaged leaf at the base will this leaf grow back from the cut source?
Hi Dylan,
Thank you for watching 🌱
- Plastic tube is the water level indicator. Shows you how much water you have in the water reservoir.
You can watch our videos about these pots here bit.ly/3FBJIp4
- No, you do not need a saucer.
- Root rot happens only if not enough time provided for the soil to dry between refilling the reservoir.

Houseplants should typically be pruned at the beginning of the growing season - early Spring. However, I have pruned indoor plants throughout a year. It IS winter, so I know growth is slow. Hoping it picks back up :( Thank you for the video! Did not know to run some soil into the cut area.
Hi Liv,
Sounds like you took the right approach!
Watch my video about how to save an overwatered plant and prevent this issue: bit.ly/3qtI1T6
If you need to re-pot your plant, this is the potting mix I use and recommend: bit.ly/2SumKuf
You may also use our plant food (we ship it nationwide) to help the plant to recover and get stronger: bit.ly/35qzXtf
*** All-natural, no chemicals, and very gentle formula. Can be used any time during the year. 1 Tablespoon per 1 gallon of water.
Green Luck and thank you for watching! 🌱
can you propagate the leaves you just cut off?
Hi! Not a cut leaf.
Here is a helpful article about how to propagate this plant bit.ly/3dMlPAz
Very helpful, my plant is really growing tall
Great 👍 Green Luck and Thank you for watching! 🌱
@@Mycityplants I Pruned yesterday, plant looks so much better thnx!
Great!! 👍🌱
Thank you!!
Hi Queenie,
Thank you for watching! 🌱
1. If you have the plant for over 6 months, it needs vitamins.
If you are in the US, I would recommend the plant food I use: bit.ly/35qzXtf
*** any other fertilizer - use half of the recommended amount.
Watch my video about fertilizing here: bit.ly/3teZEaw
2. When to re-pot/ bigger pot.
- If you noticed that the soil dries out too fast, and you need to water the plant more often; - if there is no soil between the pot's wall and the roots;
- if the roots are sticking out the drainage hole.
***This Tool will help you to test the soil at the lower levels and establish a proper watering frequency: bit.ly/2yuXVpc
I got her last fall. So I m glad to know it's not too early too repot her. I can see roots building up via the drainage holes but not sticking out but I haven't examined how root bound she is yet. I saw your one video with the giant plant thinking I was far from that and thought I was ok 😆😅
I always bottom watered until moisture was around 5-6 (once a week).
Stay safe!!
Well done!
Any other fertilizer you get, use half of the recompense amount.
May your plant grow happy and healthy! 🌱🌱🌱
How do you prune in winter?
Hi!
We provide plant care all year around and prune plants when needed no matter the season (for indoor houseplants).
Green Cheers!
Thank you for watching 🌱
@@Mycityplants So the plant doesn’t die off completely on winter and grow back from the ground?
