HI!! I got my Bird of Paradise right at the Beginning of the Pandemic at Home Depot. It was damaged and very small but plants at that time were very far & few to find and I bought it anyway. I put it in my South facing window…but a few feet back so it gets filtered bright light. It has flourished! I also at the suggestion of my sister put it in LECA. It has no dirt in the pot…just LECA. This plant Grew so much in the LECA BALLS. I get so many compliments on this plant. It’s one of my favorite plants.
This was SO helpful! I just bought one and put it on my patio and the sunburn happened. Good to know it will acclimate with the new leaves. For now, I put it more in the shade with indirect sunlight mixed with small amounts of direct sunlight. Thanks for all the tips!
This was sooo helpful! I had mine about 5 feet from a west facing window and my leaves had been curling and I was getting some sunburn so I came here for some help. I do however have a flower as of today! Excited to take some better care of my BOP.
The splits in the leaves on plants of this size is usually to help them withstand strong wind. Otherwise the leaves would act as a sail and risk snapping the stem, or tipping the plant over.
Alot of times we can mistake sunburn as fertilizer burn just fyi. Once of my leaves died off completely a couple of days after i fertilized. I made the mistake of pouring the fertilizer into the soil and watering separately. Instead of mixing the fertilizer with the water
greetings from sunny UK , have had the BOP for 8 years and finally this week have a flower stalk . Waiting for it to open , its a deep purple. The pot lives outside in the summer, but is moved inside the cold green house before the first frost. Biggest problem , is the wind damage on the leaves .
Wow I'm so excited for you!!! Yes it is very normal that their leaves split during windy environment. It helps the sunlight to be able to go to the bottom of the plant. I would not call it a wind damage. It is very natural for BOP to do that. I hope this helps!
I’ve inherited my grandads he brought back from Madeira in the 90s and he passed away this year ... it’s now suffered from over watering I think and I m concerned about rot root . I’ve cut away bad bit from it right down to bottom it’s flowering beautifully but I want to keep it going it’s well over 6 foot now and has 5 flowers
Hi I hope your Bird of Paradise has recovered now. Your message caught my eye because of your grandad bringing the plant back from Madeira Portugal. I’m going to Madeira in 3 weeks I’m so excited. I have a bird of paradise that I put in LECA. It’s flourishing incredibly! It’s definitely my favorite houseplant. How’s your plant doing today?🍃🌿🌱
Thank you very much for your video. Yesterday I purchased a bird of paradise plant from a person Who lives not far from me here in Henderson, Nevada and I am thrilled and want it to grow successfully. The plant is about four years old and it never flowered, but I’m fine if it doesn’t. Like you, I love the tropical feel it gives to my home. I know that I need to buy some plant food today and I will see how my plant thrives throughout the next few days. Thank you once again for your help.
I thought I wasn't taking good care of my BOP because some leaves were curling and getting brown in some spots. But then she sprouted two leaves out of nowhere! I accidentally broke one off, but the other one took no time at all to unfurl. Two weeks tops. I'm so proud.
Just Awesome, you did great and you stayed on point , super interesting and kept my attention the whole time because you delivered exactly what I needed to know without all the extra cutesy talk that wears me out. Upbeat positive and great voice!
The BOP will split its leaves also if it gets high winds . they split their leaves in order to not be pulled completely out of the ground. Its self preservation ! ❤ So if the plant is outside, they will split to save themselves ! What's not to love !! ❤❤❤
1. In terms of watering, I’ve seen a plant professional watering the plant that the soil gets good soak and leave it to drain(provided your planter has drainage at the bottom) and wait until the soil is dry to do it again rather than frequent watering. What are your thoughts on this? 2. what exact soil type do you use for your BOP? The soil that came with it from when I got it from Lowe’s is almost like a coconut husk feel without any typical soil at all. 3. What fertilizer brand do you use?
Hey Isabelle, thanks for leaving your questions here. 1. I agree. I usually let the soil dry out before I water it again. Yes good soak is great. However, my plant is too big and too heavy, it is impossible for me to move it around. That's why I use a self-watering pot. I use my soil meter to test the moisture level first (too big for me to dig my fingers in lol). If it is thirsty, I give it some water. I stop until i hear the water coming down to the self watering "saucer"/tray. 2. I usually remove most of the original soil when repotting my plants. However, it is always good to leave some there so that they can transition to a new environment in a more comfortable way. For this BOP, I used the potting mix I got from big box store, and then added a little bit worm castings as slow released fertilizer, and then added some perlite or orchid bark to provide more airy environment. There is no set ratio. I just eyeballed it. 3. I use Alaska Fish Fertilizer for all my indoor and outdoor plants. It stinks so bad but they love it. Let me know if you have any questions.
I brought one from my local supermarket, about a month ago,it's still quite small and a new leaf has opened in that time, but seems to have stoped,as in the new leaf is still curled a little and been like that for a couple of weeks now! Have I done something wrong? I hope it doesn't die,,I love my new plant and got it because I'm not very good with plants and heard that they was resilient! Thanks for this video!❤🇬🇧
Hi Nicole, I'm both a "liker" and subscriber from Lake Charles, LA. We have a subtropical climate here, which means our climate borders on a tropical zone and we do have an occasional light freeze, at which time I bring my tropical plants inside for the night. I have a B-O-P, the smaller variety (Strelitzia reginae) that has 3 clumps, or separate plants in one pot. I do have a large plant that looks similar to the large (S. nicolai) "bird" called a "Traveler's Palm" or Ravanala Madagascarienis. Many unfamiliar with it mistake it for a large "bird", but eventually they get a LOT larger and more magnificent. Google it! I think it must have been grown under a shade cloth because it burns easily and the leaves curl if put it direct sunlight. In the wild, they do, so I'm introducing it slowly in about 30 min. per day increments. Eventually, it'll get too tall for my porch so I told my sister she can have it where they can put it in a glassed-in atrium of her church. The ceiling there is about 20' so it can grow there many years, as long as we could appoint someone to water it on a schedule. Thanks for posting and happy gardening! 🪴🌴
Thank you for your help ❤️ I got my first birds of paradise two months ago, it's almost spring time where I live, and I am looking forward to seeing its new growth 🌿
Thanks for your tips! I got mine from a grocery store and also assumed that because of its indoor lighting that where I've placed it in my home with lower light will be okay. And a couple of weeks ago, I did see a new sphere so I think it's doing well!
Is it best to keep the plant inside? I bought it as an outside plant on my covered Patio. But as soon as I brought it home the leaves started to curl. It seems that it’s too hot for it 🤷🏽♀️(Texas)
Thank you you feeling was extremely informative I just received my plant about 4 weeks ago and it's thrown two leaves already I was extremely amazed at how quickly it grows like you I have it in a West window in the sunroom like all my other plants it seems to be thriving thank you for the information
Very helpful video. My bird of paradise has two spears and I’ve been waiting for a long time to see them unfurl. It’s very reassuring knowing that it may take some time.
I put mine outside once and it was REALLY HAPPY with the rain. So naturally when it rained again I left it out for two days. It turned black 😭😭😭. I worked so hard on keeping my plant happy and now the leaves look like crap. I think it’s due to overwatering because the soil was really wet for a while. In conclusion, the first time I set it out the leaves made the water fall to the side, this time it didn’t. Also I watered it right before putting it outside soooo 😬. The drainage holes didn’t work
Thank you! Very informative! I got two BOP about 3 months ago and they are both popping out new foliage and I’m so excited! I have them in doors near a south facing window. I live in Portland Oregon so it’s not really sunny here so I got them some plant lights and they are loving it.
Love your video. My question is. Why do the new leaves open up with a crinkle effect on one side? My white bird of paradise is 3 years old, 6ft tall and gets about 4 hours of bright morning indirect sunlight , and sits about 10 ft in from the window.
My BOP isnt doing very well and I am not sure how to identify what exactly the issue is. Thought it was under-watering but now the leaves are yellowing and all curled up. I may have to let it Rest In Peace 😞
Super enjoyed all you information thank u , can you please tell me if it's OK that my spear leaf growing is unraveling with tears and I'm horrified... anything I can / should do????
I am afraid I won't be able to see it flower. Mine is literally 10 ft tall now and it has reached the ceiling. I think I am going to give it away in summer .😫
What would cause the new leaf to start dying before it even comes out and unfurls? My orange BOP died that way and not my white BOP is starting to do the same.
Thank you, thank you, thank you Nicole. I’ve had mine about 6 months. It’s been so slow I growing. But I got a grow light and that has really helped. It started to put up a new leaf immediately. I do fertilize every week when it gets watered. Do they need to dry out between watering? I’ve got an app that wants me to water every 5-6 days. So it’s always damp.
I bought my first BoP not knowing what it was! It's in a medium planter with a few other tropical plants (dipladenia, and 2 other unidentified ones). I'm in Canada and I brought it outside a little too early, the next morning I found it catastrophically frosted, every leaf had died. Against what I thought were all odds, with it cut to the ground, this summer she popped back out and is now 4 good leaves strong! You did a great job making this video, it was informative and I appreciated your personal experience with your plant! You were well paced, I could clearly understand you, you're rather pretty, and you address the camera well! If I can offer some feedback, while editing, try and cut out the tiny parts where you cough or hang on an "umm". The job you've done is already great, and I'll be definitely checking out more of your content, but that might help you put a bit more polish on the presentation! 😊
I was so proud of how well my birds of paradise had been growing since I purchased it... until recently... I realized it the root ball specifically wasn't drying out. So the outter rim of the pot was saying moist or dry but then closer to the plant was reading as soaking wet... and not bouncing back, I had a feeling the soil I wasn't well draining enough so I tried repotting adding more sand (and splitting at the same time) .. But after repotting it started drooping WAY more. I read the shock would need water after repotting so I added water... but then It rained so it got more water.. oof... the leaves are still very curled and droopy....(some of the stems look shriveled with tony fine lines running up it.... .its not looking great. I can't tell if I should cut some stems off or just leave it alone... ...The roots looked fine when I repotted so I figured it would live...... is there anything I can do to make sure it does? I'm getting a bit worried its going to die.
Is your plant outside? Bringing it inside and putting it next to a decently lit window might do well. An indoor plant also means you get to control how much water it gets. Also, it might be beneficial for you to look at the roots again and see if any are dead. Make sure your soil has well drainage, and sand probably isn't best for that. I suggest using peat moss and or perlite with your soil. The perlite will make little gaps in the soil and assist with drainage. Some plants are very sensitive to repotting, but I don't think the bird of paradise is. Making sure you have a big pot with a lot of drainage will do well for the plant, too. My pot is probably two feet tall and 1.5 feet wide. It has several drainage holes too and has been doing alright. (It has a couple burn marks, that's it). If there are any totally dead stems/leaves, I'd cut them off at the base of the plant. I did it to mine, and it was fine. ☺️ I hope this helped!
I’ve had one for 4/5 years. It has never flowered and has grown very slowly though i did neglect it and it’s also super rootbound but I’m scared to mess with the roots and have it get root rot.
I have a medium size Bird of Paradise! You’re plant 🌱 looks good! I have mine in an area like yours! 😊 Very helpful tip on repotting My Bird Of Paradise! I will wait for the right season! ⛅️🌤☀️🌱🌱🤗 Thank you! Stay safe! And keep using your cute mask 😷 when going out to purchase more plants 🌱. 😁
I moved my plant outdoors because I wanted it to flower, but I think I made a mistake, in 110 degree temperatures the edge of the leaves started to burn and curl
This Strelizia is the Strelizia Nicolai. It won’t flower! It flowers when it’s 2-3 meters tall. So, about when it’s 8 years old. It’s not the one with the orange flowers...
Hi thanks for the tips. I just recently purchased a bop and I had a few questions I’m hoping you can answer. I live in a small studio apartment with three large windows that face SW. I’m stuck because I’d like to leave the plant there however due to the draft and ac vents pointing directly at the windows, I figured it wouldn’t be a great spot at least through winter. Additionally I’ve noticed the leaves curling inwards. Since then I’ve bought a full spectrum grow light and humidifier. My question is with the supplemented light, should I move the plant away from the window given the circumstances? I ask because i feel like it would be missing some good sun here and there and not sure if a grow light would be sufficient enough through winter. Also, during the spring and summer should I continue to use the grow light in conjunction with natural sunlight? Thank you I’m advance!
This was very helpful, I had to cut 3 leaves down all the way to the stalk because I thought it would do fine on my balcony and it got severely sunburnt. With enough sunlight and watering, how long will new leaves grow or a spear pop out after cutting one of the leaves?
I bought a BOP then went on vacation for 4 days. I came back and all the leaves had curled and dehydrated hard core😅. I thought it would be okay with the watering situation i had set up. I was so sad lets see if i can help it survive.
Wondweful video. You might want to add a disclaimer about Costco having a sale on the plant since not everyone won't be watching it right when you posted it
Amazing video thank you !! 💕 can you touch upon watering a little more? Does anyone know if it’s ok to use tap water or does it have to be filtered water ?
Very good video..I learn so much from your videos. You said if its under water leaves curl in, but I use moisture meter to check, its wet still leaves curl in. I got it a week back. Any suggestions?
Mine has not grown at all. I see a new leaf coming in for weeks but no change. I have her near south west facing window and she gets good light but no change. I’m very frustrated 😡
Thank you, your information was very helpful. My plant (Leah) recently birth 3 new leaves. But one leaf began to brown before it unfurled. Now its starting to wither. What happened. Its not in direct sunlight.
That happened to me too. Mine stayed furled for a long time because I don’t think I had enough humidity. I placed a wet cloth around the “spear”...it immediately unfurled but it was yellowed/brown when it did. I think it’s because it was wrapped so tight without light for too long. Now I leave a humidifier near it as much as I can.
Very informative. I had mine for about six months and it's been doing fine. Except the last few weeks it has started getting burns at the very edges of the leaves. Very dark coloured burns. And I've not changed anything I've been doing. It used to face a north facing window but I thought it would be happier at a south facing window to get more direct sunlight, We are going into winter now so less sunlight and heat (UK weather) . And I'm a bit confused and concerned for my pretty.
What fertilizer do we use? My bird of paradise got a white fungus all over like white stuff… what do I do?! I cleaned it with peroxide diluted with water but it keeps coming back
I bought two small plants 3 days ago and planted them in a new pot that was larger then the small plastic one they came in. I've noticed that they are now starting to curl? I'm worried and want to make sure they are ok. Any tips would help alot.
I just purchased a 7ft BOP (Bird of Paradise) today. My BOP is nearby a NW facing window. But I also have a grow light/ tripod on the other side of the plant. Its actually 4 plants in one pot? Should I divide them?
I need a bit of help. I was given an already damaged birds of paradise that seemed to have crispy edges on many of the leaves. When I brought it home, I put it outside in the sun and it appears that my neighbor's dog got into it and chewed away at some leaves. I figured with the damage, they probably wouldn't come back to life, so I trimmed them off. I also think the plant was actually over watered because it came with a pool of water in the drain basin and it took a long time for it to dry out again. What do you suggest I do with the damaged leaves?
I have a white BOP. They do indeed flower. The BOP should be at least 5 years old. Sufficient direct sunlight, at least 6 hours. 30-50% humidity and 70-80F. They can flower ANYWHERE indoors if you dedicate all your time, energy, and pay a lot on electricity bills 😊😭
I Love BOP unfortunately it's too big for my flat Lol. So I'll just watch and appreciate other people BOP ;) But I love how yours grows and thanks for sharing your care tips. Have a fab weekend Nicole :)
You could always get a little one. I purchased two for $25 (for both) from an Etsy shop I found, I’m looking forward to watching them “grow up”. We are also in a small apartment, so we don’t really have room for large plants like a full sized BOP. Here’s the link if your interested 🌱😊. etsy.me/3jiXL8U
Do you ever have issues with pests? my BOP have been very healthy for the past 5 months but in the span of a month, a few leaves died and some stems began to brown and rot, some of the new leaves also got very visible browning and im not so sure if its sun burn. I saw that there's spider mites under the leaves and I did clean them with starxmite. it went away but it came right back after a few days. Do you have any tips on how to clear this? as my BOP is not so pests resistant :(
mines grown about two feet in the past month and a half and is growing a new leaf stock every three months or so. if I didn't have 12 foot ceilings in a lot of the house I would be in trouble
Hey there, one of the "arms" of my strelitzia has become to big and heavy. Can i remove it cutting it from the "trunk" ? Do you have any suggestion? Thanks
If I don’t get any good direct sunlight in my apartment, can I put it on my patio during the day and bring it inside at night? Or is that too much movement for it

The splits in the leaves on plants of this size is usually to help them withstand strong wind. Otherwise the leaves would act as a sail and risk snapping the stem, or tipping the plant over.
Thank you. I’ve had my baby since March and I’m excited to see how she goes through the British winter
Same here! Mines like 2ft tall now
Ben want Ed to get one like you said 😡 no sun how to care in winter 🥶
I call mine my baby too 🥰
Alot of times we can mistake sunburn as fertilizer burn just fyi. Once of my leaves died off completely a couple of days after i fertilized. I made the mistake of pouring the fertilizer into the soil and watering separately. Instead of mixing the fertilizer with the water

Full sun where we live is different from where they originate. ALWAYS slowly adjust your plant to more light unless it’s already grown outside

One of the most helpful plant videos I've ever seen. You touched on every question I had. Thank you!
Hey luv, I got my BIP today she is huge got her from Kroger for 6 dollars. I hope you have a blessed Christmas. Happy Growing and stay safe.
Thank you for the acclimation point, I couldn't figure out why my leaves were burning!

Great video that addressed all my concerns and questions. I liked the format of this!!
Thank you! I’m glad you found it helpful!
EXTREMELY HELPFUL VIDEO! Thank you for all the incite. Definitely a must watch for first time plant Moms!
I am glad you found it helpful!
Thank you for this video- it is the most informative I have seen and I could 100% relate to so much of what you are saying. Super helpful! 😃
I really enjoyed this video and found it super helpful! thank you!

Thank you for the information. 🙂 Can you tell me, when a new leaf forms, does another leaf usual die off? I'm dealing with that now.
It on sale again right now. I just traded for one but I'd buy one there if i didn't already have one. They have really neat clay pots too.
My BOP isnt doing very well and I am not sure how to identify what exactly the issue is. Thought it was under-watering but now the leaves are yellowing and all curled up. I may have to let it Rest In Peace 😞
Its a glorious plant and quite easy to take care of.
Super enjoyed all you information thank u , can you please tell me if it's OK that my spear leaf growing is unraveling with tears and I'm horrified... anything I can / should do????
This was very helpful! I did the same thing and burned mine by accident and i couldnt figure out why, so thank you for including that in this video:)
You are very welcome!
Great vid! Do you have any tips on how to propagate a BoP?
If you would like your BOP to flower its suggested to leave them to become pot bound.
I am afraid I won't be able to see it flower. Mine is literally 10 ft tall now and it has reached the ceiling. I think I am going to give it away in summer .😫
@@SunnySideUpwithNicole ah sounds like you have a Strelitzia nicolai, they get big!
Thanks! I have a bird of paradise and it’s been growing pretty well. Super excited for the flowers to bloom.
That was very constructive, and well said.
S. nicolai grows in South africa , Mozambique, Botswana, Zimbabwe and also in Mexico.

My parents in Florida have had one potted outdoors for 20 years, it’s never flowered
Thanks for all the research you did and shared with us!
Great video, stayed on the topic, she did all the research for us in a nutshell! Great info, thank u 🙏🏼
I have a medium size Bird of Paradise!
You’re plant 🌱 looks good!
I have mine in an area like yours! 😊
Very helpful tip on repotting My Bird Of Paradise! I will wait for the right season! ⛅️🌤☀️🌱🌱🤗
Thank you!
Thank you! Very informative and straight to the point and I appreciate that.
I have a bird of paradise that I keep at a east window and it flowers but only twice a year
Lucky you! I hope mine will flower soon!
Wow nice to know !!! Any tips ???
Thank you for sharing… don’t forget the humidity in Hawaii
Awesome video! So direct and informative.💞
You might want to add a disclaimer about Costco having a sale on the plant since not everyone won't be watching it right when you posted it
Working on resuscitating my birds of paradise. I made the mistake of leaving it outside in direct sunlight for a week..
This video is AMAZING! Helped me a lot :)
Wow on the price! I don't have a costco near me. Check for mealy bugs when you bring it in from outside. Mealy bugs love them.
Extremely informative and to the point
Thank you thank you thank you so much for this video 🙌🏼
Is your plant a s. nicolai or s. reginae? I just bought a small s. reginae but now wonder if I should have got a s. nicolai!! Thanks for the video! :)
Thanks did all the information. Can I cut off damaged leaves?
What is the soil mix you use in your plant?
Would it be possible to prune or trim roots instead of repotting if you need to keep the plant on the smaller side?
I just purchased a 7ft BOP (Bird of Paradise) today. My BOP is nearby a NW facing window. But I also have a grow light/ tripod on the other side of the plant. Its actually 4 plants in one pot? Should I divide them?
Very helpful video!! Thank you for sharing!
My spears are very heavy how can I stake them
Also some leaves are not opening at all
Hi all!! I have some white fuzz growing on my bird of paradise, any idea how to treat it? I cleaned it off, but it’s starting to come back…
thank you so much!! very helpful.
Hello! I need some help with my plant, the leafs are too heavy that the steams break apart, do you know why is that for ?
Thank you so much! I thought I need to put it outside because thats what the instructions said on the care tips.
You can put it outdoor. Just do it slowly and give it time to acclimate.😊 I'm not going to move mine outdoor again because she is too big right now 😆
The white birds of paradise (the one you have) don’t flower, but the orange birds of paradise do ❤️
They both will flower as long as enough sunlight is given. I saw some beautiful flowers from white BOP at amazon sphere.
Emily Elizabeth you meant grow lights ???
I Love BOP unfortunately it's too big for my flat Lol. So I'll just watch and appreciate other people BOP ;) But I love how yours grows and thanks for sharing your care tips. Have a fab weekend Nicole :)
They are fast grower for sure! Thank you and I hope you enjoy the weekend too!
You could always get a little one. I purchased two for $25 (for both) from an Etsy shop I found, I’m looking forward to watching them “grow up”. We are also in a small apartment, so we don’t really have room for large plants like a full sized BOP.
Here’s the link if your interested 🌱😊.

Do you have any tips on how to clear this? as my BOP is not so pests resistant :(
I have a little baby one I can’t wait to see it grow n.n
mines grown about two feet in the past month and a half and is growing a new leaf stock every three months or so. if I didn't have 12 foot ceilings in a lot of the house I would be in trouble
Sorry for the late response. Lol I'm nervous too. It is a very fast grower for sure!
I have 6 baby bird of paradise plants , about 6 inches. They came In small plastic containers. At what point should I put them in better pots
Which fertiliser we should use please specify
Mine is getting white stuff on it and the leave’s sides are crinkled. Any knowledge.
I have noticed my plant get white powder thing on leaf. And broken leaf.please suggest
Or is that too much movement for it
That's fine, as long as the temperature is above 50 F.
Nice video! Very informative!
Very Helpful! Thanks!
