Hi! I wanted to give a bit of advice. I’m a chemist and letting water sit out does not dissipate salts/minerals because they are not soluble in air. If anything, the water will evaporate, making the salts and minerals more concentrated in the solution. If you were to boil salt water until it was gone, salt would be left because it doesn’t evaporate. Just a friendly tip!
Just got one half price at my local grocery store. It was the last one and I was so excited to see it. Very excited to add him to my growing collection. Thanks for the tips.
Hi .. we just bought one of these plants last week .. yes they are gorgeous.. we have only just become plant parents.. starting our collection on 1st August 2024 ... learn on a steep curve .. thank you for the information given here it really helps ... take care ..
I've always been in awe of the strelitzia's beauty. I live in South Africa and I see this plant all the time since it is indigenous to South Africa. So happy that I finally got one a few days ago!!!❤️
I had my bird of paradise for 7 years before it flowered. Now I get flowers every December/January I had 4 this year. I use a weak solution of Richard Jackson’s flower power every time I water. It must be 5ft tall and has sat in the same spot for 11 years. Only repotted it twice.
@@GoodGrowing yes it stands in front of my French casement Windows and doors. So it gets plenty of light and sunshine in the afternoon. I live in Essex just on the outskirts of London.
@@GoodGrowing it seems so. I watched a few of these videos for tips of repotting. The pot is starting to look old so I bought a new one. I’ve watched how it’s done but I’ve never attempted to repot such a large plant.🤞
I'm just recently getting into getting plant babies. I got a monstera deliciosa, philodendron Birkin and the bird of paradise. I'm finding that the BOP is the most picky plant I have right now. Definitely did not like tap water so I've switched to distilled. I also started running a humidifier since the air is quite dry during the summer with the ac on. I think I overwatered it a couple times and it wasn't drying out so I finally decided to repot it. So much to learn but I'm loving it!
Yes there is always so much to learn about plant parenthood. I've been keeping plants for 3 years now and I'm still learning every day! Sounds like you're on the right track though!
Hi Emma ( and fellow plant lovers)! I might have some flowering tips. I've got a few strelitzias. One big one that reaches the ceiling. I used to take it out in the late spring and summer and took it back in when temperatures reaches 10 degrees Celsius. It then mimicks spring indoors and it gave me flowers during the winter in front of an ceiling high northwest facing window. I also have one about a meter high. I took a few seeds from the Botanical garden in Cape Town in 2012 and it flowered every winter from 2020 (they have to be at least 7 years old before starting to flower). I even didn't take it outdoors last spring/summer. It almost seems like it take 2 years to establish flowering. So taking it out summer 2024 it will flower winter 2025/2026. I repotted it in Soil Ninja soil alst autumn and it is thriving! I use Liquid Gold Leave as well but I found out 3-1-2 works better. I started using Bio Fish mix. I love the experimenting, but i love the flowers even more. Did yours flower yet? Do you have some additional advice? What I don't get is why i see so many strelitzias with thin almost floppy leaves (like yours) while mine are rigid and sturdy. Do you have any idea how comes? The problem I have is the leaves gettting a bit stuck while unfolding and are a bit "ribbed". Spraying them while unfolding helps. Keep up the amzing work. I love your videos!!
Thank you for being so thorough. I've watched countless videos and you've answered all of my questions. I got mine a month ago and its gone through so many changes in such a short time.

I just picked up a Bird or paradise and this has actually made me feel a lot more confident about caring for her ! Thankyou so much for this informative video
These things are beasts! I bought mine in May (I live in Chicago), and they grew like nuts throughout the summer - but they did curl up their leaves during the super hot parts of the day. I dragged them inside before we got a frost, and they are thriving in my large south facing bedroom windows. They are now about four feet tall and throwing out new leaf spears every couple months.
Hey Chicagoan! Just got mine a few days and literally the 4th day the leaves are curling watered yesterday have a rock inside my pot so it drains out. I have some brown spots on this 4th day and leaves breaking. I keep seeing to leave infront of window but moved it now were the sun is not as direct as before to avoid the brown on the leaves developing. Hopefully the steam from the shower helps a bit

I was just given a small one in the UK and I love it already, it probably won't flower in the room it's in but we get a lot of sun in the garden throughout summer so I'll probably put it outside for a few months next year, perhaps that'll be enough to encourage it. Thanks for the video, learned a lot. I should be able to keep it alive :)

Very very helpful video..making this my bible for BOP. I got one today from home depot in 10inch nursery pot. I have put inside the house for now. what should i do next? Fertilize it? Repot it? The soil is moist and I have moisture meter so will wait for watering. I eventually want to move it to the shade in my patio, any suggestions on how and when to transition? Looking forward to learning about this beautiful plant.
Hi thanks for the tips. I just recently purchased a bop and I had a few questions I’m hoping you can answer. I live in a small studio apartment with three large windows that face SW. I’m stuck because I’d like to leave the plant there however due to the draft and ac vents pointing directly at the windows, I figured it wouldn’t be a great spot at least through winter. Additionally I’ve noticed the leaves curling inwards. Since then I’ve bought a full spectrum grow light and humidifier. My question is with the supplemented light, should I move the plant away from the window given the circumstances? I ask because i feel like it would be missing some good sun here and there and not sure if a grow light would be sufficient enough through winter. Also, during the spring and summer should I continue to use the grow light in conjunction with natural sunlight? Thank you I’m advance!
What you've got there is a Strelitzia nicolai, not a S. reginae. While they are related closely, they look very different. S. nicolai grows for the most part on a single stalk and is MUCH larger leafed. At maturity, they produce white "birds" flowers on a bract. S. reginae, also known as the "orange" bird, grows in clumps with multiple stalks, while their leaves are MUCH smaller in size. I thought you'd want to know that distinction.
The house is wonderful and the plant is amazing I live in the eastern countries of Iraq, and the summer is hot and long. The farmers advised me not to cover the bird of paradise, so that it adapts to the heat and becomes strong? Is that correct? And another question Why is the price of the bird of paradise so high!!? They are expensive in all countries of the world!
Hmm I've never had a poinsettia before. I'm pretty sure at one point you'll need to trim it all back and keep it in a cool dark place for some portion of the year and then when it gets cool again it'll start to regrow and bloom! Best of luck :)
Really good video answered most of my questions, but I would like to know about how to treat infestations as I seem to have little, tiny black bugs on the planet which I have been spraying with soapy washing up liquid which seems to be doing the job. I would like to know what you recommend. Keep the videos going
I put mine outside one evening to get some rain during the summer. It got no rain but it did fall over and rip all of it’s foliage.. Love that haha definitely broke my heart but we’re still here trying to recover. it hasn’t given me any new leaves for the last few months tho:(
I have a juvenile BoP that has been growing well, but the last shoot seemed to stop part way through growing, to the point I can't see the leaf's stem, but the leaf is 'wrinkling' because it can't unfurl - does anyone have any suggestions on how I can get the shoot to continue its growth? Am in the UK and autumn has just hit, so the days are now pretty cloudy, but I've been using an LED sunlight lamp for around a year or so to give it a boost. I don't water it much - only if I stick my finger in the soil up to my middle knuckle and it feels dry. Any help anyone can provide will be VERY much appreciated! Thank you.
Could you tell about combination of plants..like spathyphyllum with monstera potting together...or if monstera can be planted with alocasia. I like thick foliage
This video was super helpful thank you!! I am planning to repot my bird of paradise for the first time and I got a bag of miracle grow potting mix and a bag of organic peat moss. Was planning to do a 50/50 mix - any thoughts on that approach?
Hey! Nice video. Can you do a video on spider plants and how to take care of them in different seasons? Also, I believe quick summary points (written) at the end of each video would be really helpful.
Hey! Thank you very much! I do have a spider plant video that you should go check out :) and yeah I can totally make a summary page for the plant care! great idea thanks :)
I have had mine since December and have had no new leaves the plant leaves are cracking at the ends although I have been watering once a week and it’s in a room full of sunlight so I am not sure what I am doing wrong :(
It's pretty normal to not have new leaves right away and also though the autumn and winter months. Mine has only just started to pop out some new leaves this year so be patient. Also if you've not already, give it some houseplant fertiliser every 2 weeks or so in the growing season and hopefully that will help. As for splitting leaves, that's pretty normal as the leaf hardens out. I wouldn't worry unless they're starting to go crispy and brown. Then raise the humidity
that's not a Stralitza Reginae your showing, it's Stralitizia Nicolai with the large leaves. The Reginae has the small leaves but the beautiful flowers that we all love. The one your showing will have the white flower. Yes you can get them to flower at home, I had two on mine and still have a flower on the way. They need at least six hours of sun a day or use a grow light.
Hey, I have my birde of paradise more then 5 months and it hasn't shoot any new leaves. It's growing roots like crazy. Is there anything I can do? It gets alot of light so I don't know whats wrong...
Hmm it could be adjusting to it's new home. And especially now that it's winter, growth will have slowed so I'm sure it's just waiting until spring! :)
Where did you buy your liquid gold leaf? Also I just got mine today & the leafs had small splits & I had to take my plant in the back of my truck 🙃🥲 & it 2 leafs got lots of splits should I rip those leafs off so it can grow new ones 🧐 help pls what do you recommend Thank you
I got it direct from their website but you can buy it from soil ninja if you want. Splits are totally normal, and don’t harm the plant. but you can cut them off if you don’t like how they look. I’d personally leave them until you’ve got lots more
Hey! The leaves on my plant is hanging and some of the lower leaves are curling a bit. I live in norway, and have little sunlight, but i have a plant light at it at night. it takes long time to dry so i dont rarely water it, but still the edges is brown. what can i do to make it happier?
Hi, there. Is this really a reginae? I'm not a pro but to me this looks like a Nicolai. I Thought the leaves of a reginae are much sturdier and smaller, more arrow shaped?
@@GoodGrowing Darn, I've been searching this question for hours and you just answered it and burst my bubble. I accidentally snapped a brand new shoot and it was dying before my eyes. I put it in water, but now I know that won't help. 😥
I have quite a big bird of paradise (around 5 feet and 20+ leaves), recently a couple of the largest middle leaves have started browning and then going yellow before they die. Only affecting biggest leaves so far and it still has ongoing new growth. Any ideas why this might be?
Hmm I'm not too sure. As it's the middle leaves I don't think it sounds like a watering issue. Maybe it's got pests. Thrips tend to go unnoticed, especially in big plants!
Hi there! I’m growing a bird of paradise from a smol bb with only two leaves. It’s leaving towards the window and I want to make sure they don’t keep doing that. Do you have any advice?
Ooh both good options! Might be worth keeping it inside though if you bought it as a houseplant as that is the conditions it's used to. If you want one for outside, would be good to buy one meant for outside, ya know :) good luck
I'm not too sure tbh. I got it about a year ago and it was in a pot one size smaller than this. It was quite large when I got it though, like 90cm tall at least
The clamp grow lights I got from amazon. They're these ones amzn.to/3pLdLTl (this is an affiliate link meaning that I get a little commission but it doesn't affect the price for you). I think they do a decent job, I have three sets now :)
I just got one and a week later I used my moisture meter and it’s still wet @10 but the leaves are browning around it so I tried watering it again thinking it would make better because it was dry. What do I do?
were the leaves browning in a crispy way or a mushy way. If it was mushy then it's likely overwatering/too dense of soil. If it was crispy, might be worth upping the humidity
Nice Video, thank you, However I don't think that your house has a relative humidity of 65%. It is too high. I think between 35-50% is more normal and tollerable.

Ooh super exciting. Hmm that sounds a bit heavy, it may be worth throwing some perlite in there for more drainage
I did 1/4 peat moss, 1/4 coco husk, 1/4 perlite and 1/4 grow potting mix. it was perfect for her needs. :)
What kind of fertilizer did you say you use??
What should I do if the leafs are curled .
Thanks for this. I have baby birds pf paradise ready ro repot. Love also ur "variegated" hair 🤩
Naww thank you!!
Hi, did you grow them from seeds?
Thanks
@@gina1003 Hey I didn't grow this from seed sorry
Hey!
@@GoodGrowing Sure. Will do :)
@@GoodGrowing thanks for the response that’s v helpful :)
that's not a Stralitza Reginae your showing, it's Stralitizia Nicolai with the large leaves. The Reginae has the small leaves but the beautiful flowers that we all love. The one your showing will have the white flower. Yes you can get them to flower at home, I had two on mine and still have a flower on the way. They need at least six hours of sun a day or use a grow light.
Thanks!
In Colorado mine rip because it’s soooo dry and I’m from Seattle Washington lol 😆
Oh no!! :(
I'm in Colorado too. Im bound and determined to have one live.
Me too!! Let’s link and plant shop
I’d personally leave them until you’ve got lots more
@@GoodGrowing thank youu 🙌🏼🙌🏼 have a great day!!
Could you do a video on strinv of hearts plzz
I've made a video for them! Here's the link :) ua-cam.com/video/7DvxvKCo10s/v-deo.html
Can these plants stay in pots to prevent them from getting so tall in the pots
Hey! The leaves on my plant is hanging and some of the lower leaves are curling a bit. I live in norway, and have little sunlight, but i have a plant light at it at night. it takes long time to dry so i dont rarely water it, but still the edges is brown. what can i do to make it happier?
I’ve started getting small black spots on my bird of paradise. Any suggestions on what it could be??
that could be a sign of pests. defo worth having a closer look and maybe even showering it off
Hi, there. Is this really a reginae? I'm not a pro but to me this looks like a Nicolai. I Thought the leaves of a reginae are much sturdier and smaller, more arrow shaped?
Yes it actually is a nicolai... I misspoke in the video 😅 thanks for checking!
I had to cut my plant back due to a move wat do I need to do to get my leaves back
What fertilizer do you recommend? New plant mom here :)
Welcome to plant parenthood! I have been using Liquid Gold Leaf lately and loving it :)
How do you propagate this plant? I can’t find any videos, only dividing it 😊
You can only propagate BOP by division as it is a rhizome plant
@@GoodGrowing Darn, I've been searching this question for hours and you just answered it and burst my bubble. I accidentally snapped a brand new shoot and it was dying before my eyes. I put it in water, but now I know that won't help. 😥
@@angemarie12 Oh no! I'm sorry to disappoint :(
Hello, do you use grow light for the strelitzia? Thanks
I don’t. Mine just sits in a south west facing window
Where did you get the half face pot ? I need it 😍
From a shop called Latzio Living
Hi there! I’m growing a bird of paradise from a smol bb with only two leaves. It’s leaving towards the window and I want to make sure they don’t keep doing that. Do you have any advice?
Rotate it 90° each week!
Thank you so much!
Is this the small form bop?
I'd like a meranta prop vid please x
Yesss! Maranta is on my list for soon! :) thanks for the suggestion
For fertilizer, is it okay to do more frequent starch water fertilizer? I save my rice and pasta water for fertilizing.
I've never tried starch water fertilising so I'm not too sure.. sorry
I just bought a baby one yesterday and not sure if I want to keep it potted or plant in backyard here in Florida
Ooh both good options! Might be worth keeping it inside though if you bought it as a houseplant as that is the conditions it's used to. If you want one for outside, would be good to buy one meant for outside, ya know :) good luck
@@GoodGrowing thank you
Can we hire you to consult on our plants? We have bird of paradise plants that are having a hard time.
How old is your plant?? I’m getting a 6” plant tomorrow - just wondering how long it will take to get big :)
I'm not too sure tbh. I got it about a year ago and it was in a pot one size smaller than this. It was quite large when I got it though, like 90cm tall at least
Hi there hope you don't mind me asking but we're did you get your grow lights from.
The clamp grow lights I got from amazon. They're these ones amzn.to/3pLdLTl (this is an affiliate link meaning that I get a little commission but it doesn't affect the price for you). I think they do a decent job, I have three sets now :)
@@GoodGrowing thank you. Am going to order one for now 😃.
The plant showed looks like a Strelitzia nicolai, not a reginae!
@@GoodGrowing in a crispy way, they curled too.
@@dgol10 hmm maybe too low humidity
Sorry im new to plants but is the bird of paradise the same as strelizia nicolai?
Yes it is :)
Can you use indoor light lamps for these plants? :o
Yes you can totally use grow lights for these
Would miracle grow indoor potting mix be good for this?
Yeah I don't see why not!
💚
On the meter- where do you water at? 3 or lower?
Yeah 3 or lower. I try to aim for 2 or lower but sometimes I just go with 'DRY' as that's what I've got time or energy for
My poor plants leaves are turning brown. I’m going to give her more sunlight.
If they thrive in California, why would you say they don't like direct sunlight?
They do like direct sun
What's the maximum outdoor temperature for them?
28-30°, higher It dies
What kind of fertilizer do they take?
I use liquid gold leaf
Can I grow bop from seeds?
Thanks
I'm really not sure sorry. I got this one already pretty big
That isn't the sterlitzia reginae that is the sterlitzia augusta grows big and the flower is like the bird of paradise but is brown
“I tend to let water sit around before I water it to let SALTS DISSIPATE OFF”?? Since when does salt evaporate?????
I have 2 Huge BOP's. 6 feet tall. They get Big quick.
Isnt that a Nicolai….?
Yes it is… I stopped the video right where she got the species wrong lol
My girls leaves are curling i keep her watered
It might be not enough humidity. Mine do that sometimes too
Let tap water sit for 24 h ‘ to let salts and stuff dissipate off’ ???
yeah i'm not quite sure how it works but the chemicals dissipate. It's pretty common advice
This is definitely a Strelitzia Nicolai. It's not the Reginae. They are quite different.
Nice Video, thank you, However I don't think that your house has a relative humidity of 65%. It is too high. I think between 35-50% is more normal and tollerable.
Haha tell that to my hygrometers throughout my flat!
