Just an FYI, this video was not sponsored by anyone. I suggested a lot of ASA because they offer a reasonable quality for the price, and if you never use them after getting your certificate they wont break the bank. They do print a lot of the books provided by the FAA as well.
I want to make this promise to you guys this is me on the 5th of may 2021 I will come back to this video whenever I get my commercial pilots license thank you guys for the support ❤️❤️ I also will comment this on your most recent post to date just so you guys know I have this promise set I am also 15 years of age and turning 16 later this year
Awesome. We'll look for that post! Good luck on your journy!
Really good video is great information. Thank you so much for sharing. I’m just getting started with ground school online so this was extremely helpful!!
2 years later progress?
Yo where’s the update?
Whats up bud? Don’t quit on your dreams. That is equivalent to quitting on yourself. You are too young to do that!
You guys are by far my favourite aviation channel on UA-cam. I’m only fourteen right now, but becoming a pilot is my ultimate dream. I’ve been watching your videos for about a year now, after a good friend of mine got me into aviation and took me in his plane. Thank you so much for taking time to help young aspiring pilots like myself.
Cheers and best wishes,
Jess x
Thank you for your kind comments! I've seen you posting on a lot of our videos. =) We'll keep making content for you, lots coming in the next few weeks.
I can second this. I have wanted to fly since I was a kid. I'm 40 now and just started my training. Expensive hobby, but so much fun. Thank you so much for taking time to help OLDER aspiring pilots like myself.
Thanks for the valuable information.
Amazing video , keep up the great work 👍
This was extremely helpful thank you so much.
Wow I liked that flashcard deal. Glad I watched all the way to the end!
Thank for the info.
Thank you for all the links - that was a big help and saved me some money.

Me too Brian!
Wow! Great presentation.
Thank you! Cheers!
I am just starting my ppl license study! Thanks for the video!
You’re welcome. Thanks for watching!
@@flywiththeguys no problem!
This by far was the best video for a newbie like me.
It's one of the reasons I made it. No one had good answers for what to get, and I only listed the things I knew were needed and valuable.
thank you for a very informative video !
Glad it was helpful!
Love that Corsair on the wall
Me too. It's my favorite plane and on my bucket list to fly. Would be the pinnacle of my aviation career.
Great info as I'm getting ready to get my PPL
Awesome! Good luck and post back when you finish!
Great a like it thanks a lot
Great work, Carl! Got myself a padded backpack from a local store for all my stuff where I can fit in a seat cussion as well as flight school don´t provide these and I´m not that big. And consider some action cams to record your flights as a reference work to learn a bit faster (and of course to make nice videos out of them ☺ ). I don't know ASA headsets, but there are more cheaper ones that are way better in (passive) reducing engine sounds than the more expensive ones.
Thanks for the comment and info!
This by far is the best explanation on UA-cam on how to get your PPL. Thanks so much!
Glad it was helpful!
Nice work!
Thanks!
I am really glad to have found your channel! JA
Glad you’re enjoying our content!
Thank you very much I really appreciate
No problem!
It's just amazing to me that the rental of the plane is the biggest cost in this whole process. I like it!!!!I'm going forward!!!
I know right!? Good luck on your journey!
Get the Oral Exam guide and make flash cards with the questions.
Solid Advice
Great video...thanks for your information as I'm planing to embark into my Private Polite Certification journey
Well you sound like you're ready. You're calling it a certificate instead of a license!
Did you get it? Update friend!
Love this
Thanks! It's an old video now, but the info is still good!
I travel to PHX now and then...Maybe could swing in!
I recommend the flash cards. Each person learns differently. I used similar flash cards when I was in law school. I don't think I would have passed my courses without them. They work for me. They present the scenario, ask you to assess it. You develop your own assessment, and then compare it with the answers provided. This is a great learning system for me. Make your own decision if it works for you. Whatever you do, find what works for you, and use that to the fullest extent possible.
They're good little cards. I got them towards the tail end of my studies and they were great.
Foreflight is awesome. Especially when paired with a Sentry for ADSB. It's also great for Instrument flying. I don't like flying single pilot in IMC, but being able to pull up any approach plate or chart with just a tap greatly reduces workload.
Love foreflight as well. It's an essential for my flight planning and flying these days. Like it over the planes GPS. LOL
Very informative
I've found this channel so intriguing. Are you a pilot yourself?
Thank you! And yes, I am a pilot.
Love your videos
Thank you! I really enjoy making them.
Thanks so much for all your great info! Im preparing my 15yr old to become a pilot. Its the only thing on his mind besides surfing LOL Greetings from Bali
That is awesome! Good luck to him!
I would also recommend getting a fuel test cup, a flashlight and spare batteries, notebook that will fit on the kneeboard, and some pens. Been enjoying your videos, they are excellent!
Thank you, I'm glad you're enjoying them. Some of those things are good to have in a standard flight bag. I didn't think to include them because depending on where and what you fly, those things are already in the plane for your use. It's nice to have your own though.
Thank you so much for the free books!
You are so welcome!
thank you so much !!!!
Your welcome!
Thanks very much
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
Hi Fly with guys, I’m only 12 but after going on a plane ride with a neighbor who is an instructor and being able to slightly control the plane my eyes where open to flying, thank you for this vids they show me what it takes to be a pilot and what I should start on.
Awesome! Thanks for your kind words and I hope you get your license some day!
2023 I’m getting my PPL
Thank you for your help
No problem and good luck!
I've watched this repeatedly throughout my training. I am at the very end, can confirm these are all the materials you need to get through it. The only items I didn't get were a sectional or terminal area chart, Ipad or EFB makes the cockpit more organized plus foreflight makes the weather very accessable anytime before flying. There are some other things I recommend.
I would've invested in a flight bag so everything is neat in order. My equipment is getting in sort of rough shape.
A test prep course is a very good supplement to get ready for the written. The FAA resources are very great. But I would prefer to use a software for written prep. I used gleim and it was great for private. (not commercial though, I took that today, did great though because I used another software with it that was cheaper!)
If not, at least become familiar with the knowledge test supplement book. Gleim provides the charts, figures and diagrams on their test prep software. But review the testing supplement for sure.
Other than that, can confirm that is everything.
Thanks for the advice and feedback on it! I'm actually getting ready to get make this video again. =) Update it, add other essentials like you said.
Great video, I like the flash card ideas. My question, for person such as myself, would you recommend the same material for pursuing a LSA license?
From what I understand it’s fairly similar!
I’m about to turn 16 and I just took my discovery flight 2 days ago and it was one of the coolest things I’ve done in my life.
I love flying, sounds like you do too. =)
Only thing I can think of is the Pilot’s Operating Handbook for the aircrafts you are flying. Weight and Balance questions, CG question’s, and some aircraft systems questions are going to come right out of that book. It would be in the aircraft, but having a nice PDF copy on your iPad or phone really helps prepare for the oral exam.
Those would be other useful items. I had PDF versions on my iPad like you said. =)
Hey Carl--just discovered your channel and have really enjoyed all of your content so far. I am 60 and have always dreamed of getting my ppl, and I am now ready to pursue it. I live in Scottsdale, AZ, and was wondering if you have any recommendations for flight school training, whether out of Scottsdale (seems awfully busy there, though!), Deer Valley or Glendale (all are within easy driving distance. Any recommendations? Thank you!
Awesome. I know of a club and a school. If you could, head over to my website and shoot me a email and we can discuss it over there. flywiththeguys.com
I recently became interested in aviation but I'll never be able to become a pilot...mainly because of a lack of money on my end, but also...as this video reminded me...I am terrible at math (I have dyscalculia - a math learning disorder). xD The idea of having to do all those calculations would be daunting and stressful. BUT...I appreciate all the links to the books and such. It's still interesting to read about and I want to get the flashcards eventually, just for the fun of it.
You just have to learn the numbers by hand for training. Afterword's, we use tools to help! It's the digital age.
Just finsihed ground school! Off to take the written.
Good luck!
I would also add a fuel tester and maybe a flight bag, or just something carry everything. I personally have been using a backpack I got for free by signing up with AOPA.
Something to carry everything in is nice. I use a backpack right now too, but my need changed significantly as soon as I became a pilot. A fuel tester is great too. Our plane has one, but not all rental operations or schools keep them in the plane.
@Fly With The Guys >>> Although NOT a book or other printed training aid, one thing I would suggest is taking some kind of _action cam_ to record your training flights. Afterward, you can review the video to help learn how to avoid any mistakes you made.
I soloed in 1979, although I never stuck with it long enough to get my ppl. I _wish_ digital video have been around back then....
Cameras are great. We're producing a video on how to record audio with them this week.
Fly With The Guys hey guys, was this video ever done?
Great content! Would the list of materials be any different if someone is getting the Sport Pilot Certificate?
A bit. You'll need to know a lot of the same information. I'm working on some sport pilot content in the background.
Thanks
No problem
👍 thanks
No problem.
Thanks for the informations, in your opinion does the simple Flight simulater (for example: Flight gear 2018) really helps by learning?
It helps with procedures, learning radio controls, avionics, and some other things. There's nothing like the real thing when learning to fly.
I just started my ppl lessons this week
AWESOME! Keep it up.
Thanks for posting this! Just wanted to double check - is the reading material recommended still valid now, as this was posted 4 years ago?
Yes, just make sure to get current material! I don't always update the links to the updated releases. I'll get that on my to do list.
Interesting ❤ I wish you could make a video for PPL in India
I've considered getting some stuff together for other countries, but its a HUGE undertaking because everyone is slightly different.
Really good to have all this presented in one place. Thanks!
It is nice. Its hard to figure this stuff out sometimes when you're just getting started and rely on others. Glad you liked it.
Great video! Does the tablet have to be an ipad? Will Samsung Galaxy Tab work with Foreflight and transponder?
Yes. Foreflight is only on IPad unfortunately.
Thank's a lot .. I live in Africa i don't have money to study aviation but i will continue to reach my dream which is to be a pilot
I have a dream
Stay with it. A lot of good resources out there.
Hi What size of I Pad would you recommend - 7.9 or 10.1 would it matter or would the 10.1 be to big ? Thanks for your vids helping out lots Cheers
The Mini. Others get too big and require a lot of space in the plane. The Mini can be mounted in a lot more places and is big enough to do everything you need.
Quick question, do you know if there's any possible way I could get my first class medical while being diagnosed with adhd? I would love all the and knowledge that you have thank you❤️
I'm not qualified to answer that. A lot of people have ADHD and have sucessfully become pilots, but there are varying degrees of it. For the medical there is a special test you have to take. Checkout the channel page. We have a video on the medical process that may help a little, but I believe the AOPA has a really good write up on it.
@@flywiththeguys thank you sm💕💕 also I just realized I had a typo in my last comment that made it a lil hard to read so my bad for that lol💀💀
Hey, great video! I haven't started as a flight student yet, I'm hoping to in a few years time. Would it be a good idea to get the handbooks now? Or should I wait until I get into actual flight training?
I would use the links to the free resources for now. You can learn a lot from them and get yourself ready. Then, if you feel like you need them for reference, buy then when your in your training.
@@flywiththeguysOK! Thanks for the quick reply!
Fly With The Guys how often are these materials updated? I'm watching in 2020 so are these still current?
Mapping gps knowledge important
Does it make more sense for someone trying to learn prior to starting training to read the Airplane Flying Handbook before the Pilot Handbook or vice versa?
Between the two books, all the knowledge you’ll ever need is there. If you want to read them I would start with the Pilots Handbook. It will better prepare you for the knowledge test. Then the flying handbook, along side your training.
Planning on moving to rural Alaska next year would a light sport license be good enough for a small bush plane?
Probably not, especially in Alaska. Light sport has a lot of limitations. This is just my opinion though.
serous question will microsoft flight simulator help in any way?
also does the book the student's flight manual
by william K. Kershner a good book to have to study?
Flight simulators are good for a few things, like checklists, workflows, and even practicing comms these days. BUT, they are far different then actually flying a plane. The feelings, the stress, and your surroundings just cant be replicated. The FAA only allows you 2.5 hours towards your PPL using an approved sim for that very reason. I still play around in them for fun, and once you have your PPL you can use them to practice instrument work that wont count for anything, but help you develop skills you really can take back to the cockpit. I have FS2020 on preorder.... Now for the book, I have no idea. Never read it. I used the resources in here for reference in conjunction to an online course.
I'm currently a senior at HS and my goal is to become a commercial pilot. What steps do I need to take?
Check out this playlist, it should help a lot but I would study like crazy! - ua-cam.com/play/PLjNuX1oAEWKnVZAVSm6aCafMS7qUoOmbw.html
I purchased most of these materials over a month ago when I started training, just ordered the airplane flying handbook today because I prefer physical copy, but for the FAR/AIM, my checkride will be in 2023 will I need to wait for the 2023 FAR AIM to come out before ordering it?
I would use the electronic one until then. Not much changes year over year, but updates happen quickly online. I haven’t cracked mine open since primary training and I didn’t have to use it on my checkride, but that doesn’t mean you won’t have to.
@@flywiththeguys my check instructor who is the head of the program during class held up his FAR AIM and said "Man who's got the time to memorize everything in this! 😂" Its extremely likely ill have it for my oral exam, I was just wondering but yes the app also comes in handy!
please i need your advice on if i should go to flight school before going back to college. i've been out of college for over 2 years now and now is the time that i would be going back. Not going to school (at least AA college degree} is not an opion for me and i also want to start my flight school in other to start building my flight time. what do you suggest that i do first especially considering i might be taking loans to finish both course.
I appreciate you asking, but I try not to give too much advice when money is involved. I would say, determine what your career goals are and make sure your education aligns with them. If you plan on joining the airlines, check with a recruiter and see what they recommend.
If yall are looking for cheap ways to buy student pilot gear. Look up ebay or marcari. They have pretty much all of the supplies you need.
I appreciate you trying to help! These can bee good places to pickup thinks like headsets, hoods, and measurement tools. But, books and charts expire, and I've seen a lot of expired books for sale on these platforms. So just be careful. =)
Do you have to use an iPad? I'm just starting to inquire about flight school and would love to use foreflight, but have never used apple. Are there other options?
There are other options out there, but the iPad is really a great choice. Not much of a learning curve with it and Foreflight is an AMAZING tool.
I have that pilots handbook
ME TOO! And a few more....
@@flywiththeguys how much few?
You mentioned the iPad with ForeFlight. I have the iPad mini 4 wifi only. When using ForeFlight will my flight plan be tracked on the app? Like will I see my plane moving on the map? Will it give me data like distance from the destination, knots I'm flying, all that other stuff? I'm just trying to figure out why ForeFlight really commended getting the iPad with cellular? Thanks for your help. Great video
Thanks! And to answer your question. If you get cellular version it does have GPS that works, but I would save your money and make a ADS-B receiver. There are lots of how to's, and I may make my own. Then you'll have GPS and ADS-B in info right on ForeFlight tha tyou can take with you to any airplane. If your transponder is ADS-B in as well, it typically offers a wifi connection to attach your tablet to. stratux.me/
Fly With The Guys ok so what you’re saying is I can build an ADS-B and hook it up to my iPad WIFI ONLY and it will do the exact same thing as if I had an IPad with cellular?
@@littlenel17 Correct, and then you'll have traffic on your iPad as well. Which is really REALLY useful. =)
@@flywiththeguys oh awesome. I didn't want to spend $500 on another ipad. When you say traffic. You mean ill be able to see other planes on the app, almost like a radar?
Correct. That’s the glory of ADS-B. The out is required by the 2020 mandate. You make that little box and now you have an in, and they’re shown in your tablet. There are other devices you can use to do it, but they are 500-600 $$. But again, check the plane you fly first to see if it has an IN that your tablet can use.
Do you recommend the Gleim Private Pilot Kit (Deluxe) in addition to the products in your description?
It's a complete learning package. If thats what you want to do for ground school go for it, but we don't make recommendations on programs and courses since we can't review them all. Just make sure what ever you get, it has good testing software.
Fly With The Guys thanks so much! I was able to read your other replies. I think the important key information that I was missing before was that I didn’t know who tests me and where to tests. Now I know I have to schedule a testing at a PSI testing center after my study. Finding it to my surprise, it’s actually the “same procedure” as other state licenses, I.e. real estate, insurance, etc. Once I’ve realized that, then the steps became clear. Study first, test after, then train by the hours!!!
I only own Windows and Android devices. Can you recommend equivalent software for For Flight on either of these platforms?
Check out iFlyGPS. Outside that, I'm not a good recourse. Foreflight is such a good app though, I would almost recommend picking up an iPad to run it.
Darn it, the flashcards on the flash aviation website are SOLD OUT. Do you recommend another source? Thanks for this helpful video!
Not for flashcards. I'm reaching out to the company. I'll let you know.
Hello, How may subject for exams, just one paper? Does FAA have testing center outside the USA?
These materials are for helping you pass the FFA Written Exam in the United States. Check your local government for rules and regulations to make sure you get the right materials for your test. They are still good books though for knowledge.
I’m studying my commercial pilot license in Canada, are those useful tool also works for Transport Canada written exam?
Short answer no, these are specific to the private pilot certificate. But it sounds like your signed up for a commercial program. You’ll need tools like this in the beginning is yes maybe, but your school should provide the materials you need, or a list of them at least.
I bought an Android tablet for this. Is there an alternative to Foreflight, for android that you could recommend? I'll ask my CFI next time I go in for training, but I would also like to hear from you on this.
iFlyGPS is supposedly good. I haven't flown with much else other than Foreflight though.
iu have a headset so im all set and ready all i dont have is the two books
Might wanna update sectional chart link :P
Took care of that a bit ago! Thanks for letting me know.
PLEASE DO WHAT KIND OF PLANES YOU CAN FLY WITH A PRIVATE PILOT LICENSE IT CONFUSES ME TY ❤️
Great video suggestion! I’ll add that to my list.
Aviation Guys thank u, and I’m sure a lot of people would find it useful!
5:06 my instructor gave me an expired chart and we busted the miami bravo lol
Man, good thing it was his fault. =)
Hi...is sciences and maths a subjects required as a high school student in order to achieve a private pilot licence if I need to fly....I want to fly aircraft as a hobby.....
No more then your high school requires. There are no prerequisites around these subjects, but doing well in them will help you later on when calculating time, distance, fuel consumption, and understanding how weather works.
Kabir Gautam same here! I’m 16 rn
What's your opinion on Garmin pilot?
Hard to day, I've never used it. =( I stuck with forflight because it was more compatable at the time. If Garmin gave me a free trial of it to really figure things out, I would give it a try and really compare the two.
@@flywiththeguys Garmin offers a free 30 day trial when you download the app
Can you also update your links so we can click them and you get the proceeds, whatever they are? I wanted to get a few things you have listed, but they are outdated.
All updated!

I honestly hadn't heard of that program before. I would reach out to the company for more information.
@@flywiththeguys ok
What is the best equivalent to foreflight for android as I refuse to buy apple products.?
I honestly don’t know. I have a iPad just for foreflight and to be a teleprompter for my videos... 😂 I know there is Garmin Pilot. I would ask this in a Facebook group or Reddit.
@@flywiththeguys thx!

Fly With The Guys thank you for the hope😀
Hello, I am going to turn 15 in September. And I want to become commercial pilot but I am wondering that what I have to start with ??
We always recommend going on a discovery flight first. This will help you understand if its right for you. Then, use the free resources in this video to learn as much as you can. Learning to become a pilot is more then just the flying part. Theres a lot of learning. You can't get a Student Pilot Certificate yet, you need to be 16, but you can log training hours and prepare for it. Then when you turn 17, you can go for your checkride.
I wish i could do all this. Get my license and fly. I want to fly cargo not passengers. I dont have the funds to get this done. Im 60 yrs old nd live in Lafayette Louisiana. Any ideas?
That's a hard one. Most Cargo and Airlines have a hard stop at 65 (Forced Retirement). I don't have any ideas that can help unfortunately.
Is there a digital logbook we could use?
All kinds! I don't use one and haven't really looked into them so I don't really have much of a opinion on them.
We need other video about commercial pilot license.
Working on all levels!
