This is great!! I always assumed they were identical. The 62s and 68s were a severe reversion to earlier tech as the TA was burned badly by the 44s and 46s. They were rushed into service in the early to mid 1970s for political reasons and also bankrupted both St. Louis Car Company and Pullman Standard. The 62s were highly reliable and well built. They will be the R32 of the future, lasting 50+ years.

Some R62's don't have the lights around the number, The most r62a's that came from the 7 line to the 6 line have them :)

Only the R62A's on the 6 (and the couple sets still on the 7) have them. The 1's fleet doesn't because that service always makes the same stops along the entire route.

There is another difference you might not notice unless you peek in the cabs.....R62 cars (Kawasaki) have GE master controllers....and R62A cars (Bombardier) have Westinghouse controllers

Also, their motor/engine sounds are different from one another. An R62A lets out a Roar-like Sound when it arrives at and takes off from a station stop, as opposed to an R62. If anyone does not understand where I am coming from, watch clips of train action of R62As on the (1) and (6) lines versus R62s on the (3) and (4) lines; you'll hear the sounds of each when they arrive and take off.

Another difference is that the R62s window frame is different it has a ridge around it that bulges out while the R62As window frame is flatter and has no ridge bulging out. There is two squared handle craters on the R62 doors. And the traction systems are different.

Don’t know if mentioned, but the R-62 has Wabco Brakes while R-62A has Westinghouse! Also the propulsion’s between them are different! These can not be intermixed in revenue service!

R68: Numbered 2500-2924
R68A: Numbered 5001-5200

You forgot that under the car number R62's Have a orange rectangle while the R62A Has Most Commonly A Red Rectangle and Sometimes A Purple one If Its the 6 or 7. Maybe even various other Colors at rare times.

Yes, it's true that they're smaller in length, compared to the NTT's. However, comparing them to the redbirds, they're roughly the same length at 51.04 feet. What's interesting is that the R62's are actually narrower than the redbirds and they decided to stick with this spec for the NTT's as well. Hope this helps, only took me 5 years to give you this answer lol!
