What happened to TF2 updates?

- Remember when Team Fortress 2 actually got frequent updates? Well... you might not actually, it's been that long. With a gigantic community of passionate workshop users, why doesn't Valve simply make community updates? Join me, indie, as we go over the history of TF2's workshop, it's failed community update efforts, and what's in store for TF2 updates in the future.

I think Valve should only give a theme and let community create whatever they want with the theme. Let's say "Give us a new game mode, maps with summer theme" Then Valve chooses some things of them into an update.

My hopes for the summer update is that there are good quality items added to the crates, and some quality of life improvements. I’m hard pressed to ask for something as impactful as Love & War or Jungle Inferno or anything that big, just some quality of life and bug fixes, minor as they may be. Perhaps at best a Blue Moon styled update that reworks weapons as well as readding content, perhaps the lost arena gamemode or some other maps that got removed from the queue, or maybe finishing Cactus Canyon and/or Asteroid.

TF2's community just puts way too much faith in Valve.
An update I was wating for a while that got cancelled was the Frontline! update. The theme is very cool and the maps too. Great vid btw (:

More than 2000 days, the only ones that "care" about the game in valve are the potted plant and the janitor, both discussing about adding the big slappy to the game or not

Actually, in hindsight the robotic boogaloo & End of the Line really wasn't that bad and without the hypetrain I think the community would've been a bit less angry about it. It wasn't supposed to be anything more than just some hats and in a time where the game actually got updates that was fine.
Yeah... Robotic Boogaloo would be seen as a content bonanza at this point in the game's lifecycle, but at the time, the expectation was that an update would come with a full suite of maps, items, etc. and not just several dozen hats.
@@anon9469 Because it was supposed to come out with a map and weapons, but Valve either stole or rejected them. I believe that the Tide Turner was supposed to be in this update, for example. The map, Snowplow, was cut for being "too confusing for new players," but was at least added eventually.
Loved the video dude. Not only was zesty just as good as he always is but the quality of the video is also extremly good. I really hope valve does something with this update that fixes some of the most glaring problems of the game. (bots, buged weapons, bugs in general, performance ect.)

The tf2 workshop is an example of why we should never let the community update the game in any way. They put out better items for the summer update but I remember what they did for these past years
Do you know why he do just this ? Because it's just that Valve and the F community want to have.
The goal of every community workshop creator is to have their items put into the game. So when they see what items VALVe has been putting into the game they start changing things up to meet the new demands. Ever since the Potassium Bonnet got put into the game, creators have been racing to make more and more garish cosmetics, it doesn't help that VALVe rewards them by actually letting in these joke items into the game.
TF2C is also further proof of this. The AA gun is one of the dumbest ideas for an unlock yet they added it anyway.

@@self-proclaimedanimator a shitty attempt at a new weapon the TF2C devs implemented that has nothing to do with "classic" TF2 (unlike actual scrapped content like the dynamite pack or the tranq gun). It's essentially a hitscan sticky spam weapon that never needs to reload, and it's about as cancerous to fight against as you can imagine. The devs clearly don't understand the importance of class distinction and just want to add their own ideas anyway, completely ruining the whole "TF2 from 2008-09" feel they were going for.
The workshop isnt bad its valve using a random number generator to decide what items get in.
Their laziness to do anything with the game has cost them to overely on other players for their "content"

Feels like a bit of a mixed bag with TF2, the gamers should be grateful that they still have developers working on it, but at the same time the developers should be grateful that they still have gamers who care so much about the game. I really hope the teased Heavy Update from that blogpost can mend the bond between the two parties, this content drought has been slowly sapping away at the game.

The Robotic Boogaloo wasn't the community deciding what was to be picked. There was already a community of people making fake updates for the hell of it and Valve liked Robotic Boogaloo and selected it to be the first community driven update.

Today I learned this game is still getting updates. I'm surprised.
Honestly, it'd be nice if we could get a weapon balance update or a new Strange weapons crate, but after they debuted cases it seems like strange crates are never gonna happen again, and older weapons with limited stranges just keep getting more expensive and unattainable by the day.

One thing one has to remember about Valve, is they dont have many people at staff. A few hundred at most. And they dont only make games (HL: Alex is a game after all) but also hardware like VR headsets, steam deck and even a mini console-stream device for TV. With them doing it all, this small amount of people is not enough to be used on permanent duty to update games till end of the world. Does not help that they have free movement of stuff, in meaning employees chose them selfs on which project they work, some prefer to work on cutting edge stuff rather to maintain old games. (Apart from doing so once in blue moon)
They could do the way they done with Counter Strike Global Offensive, which is to have outside dev team to help out with that task, but so far there is only one studio that Valve trust for such task and even now, I dint hear much that Hidden Path (Outside dev team I mentioned) is involved with anything regarding CS2.
The only way for TF2 to regain "old standard of updates" is by Valve hiring/making outside studio to work on TF2 exclusively. Problem with that is who Valve could trust with such idea along with people willing to make that a permanent job till heat death of universe when other option is to work on new stuff. Many would say "community should be that team!" but lets be honest. In ocean of people, how can one find people not only willing to remain on single project, but also be good enough to not screw things over by greed or by they bad character? Valve tried a few times to hire community and you saw what happened in TF2 cases, there are other ones in regard of other Valve games.
We should started calling the End of the line update the "Sabotaged" update just as a reminder that Valve was involved with it's doomed.
i remember that time when i was very excited about it and we all know how it ended then....

have to disagree completely on robotic boogaloo. it was the 2nd part of the mann vs machine update where we got robotic versions of already existing hats. what's wrong with that? i really like it when it came out. had no idea about valve keeping profits from the community though. i stopped playing tf2 from 2014-2018 so i'm not fully informed on that era but i know about jungle inferno and whatnot

Just thinking back, if we had more competent people in charge of the Invasion update that weren’t as selfish, we may have had more updates; perhaps even with better balance changes. But the greed of a few individuals ruined it for everyone.

It was a pretty good video. Honest to God the reason why I've basically been, pets be real here, licking Valve's boots for nearly a whole year was because well...I want to those big updates that Valve used to do. Started playing this game as soon as the bot invasion really kicked in (April of 2020), which is also why I was so hopeful for SaveTF2. And when I first saw that blog post I was so fucking happy you have no idea. "Finally!" I told myself "We're getting an actual TF2 update, holy shit" But as soon as they changed it from "update-sized update" to "holiday sized update" well...all that excitement that I had was immediately crushed.
Personally, I don't think this upcoming update will be any better than the holiday themed updates we've been getting for the past , like what, 7 years now? I really want to be wrong but given Valve's track record, I'm probably going to be proven right sadly.
Also how come I feel like what's said about the Invasion update was just the tip of the iceberg.
You should still be excitement about the summer update and its likely it will be better than the holiday themed updates we've been getting for the past.

Xbox one tf2 stayed with 0 updates and it's still active today. Little longer than 8months lol. Imo stock tf2 is better. 8 v 8 is more fun than 12 v 12 and especially 16 v 16. Sure I miss some weapons but there's a lot of gimmick bs items that can kill you and don't get me started about snipers on PC that instantly kill you after seeing you. Then you have the whole issue of people using cheats in every game and then pc tf2 starts to get annoying.

I haven't seen anyone suggest this so I'll say it. I think Valve slowed updates on TF2 because of Counter-Strike 2. Think about it! Valve would want to shift their priorities from a game they released 15 years ago to the newest Counter-Strike game on their newest engine! A game like that would take a pretty long time to make. They most likely worked on it alongside Half-Life: Alyx, but it's just that Counter-Strike 2 is taking longer because it's a more complex multiplayer game. This is all just speculation on my part though...
I know some are worried but I think the summer update will be great.
