- It seems today there is an influx of pro wrestlers making their way into Hollywood. Whether it's the countless Dwayne Johnson movies, or Dave Bautista attempting to not act like Drax the Destroyer, its seems only one has escaped the type cast of muscle bound action star....AND HIS NAME IS JOHN CENA! Whether it's Peacemaker, his turn in Trainwreck, or his more action packed roles, its obvious now that John Cena is much more than the wrestler he was at WrestleMania. But how exactly did John Cena go from a goofy wrestler in jean shorts, to the Hollywood superstar we know today?

Don't undermine Dave Bautista, who really has shown a more nuanced approach to acting. Loved him in Blade Runner 2049, can't wait to see more of him in Dune: Part Two, and don't forget the depth he had for Drax in the MCU
Facts
Bautista seems very willing to take small roles for the chance to learn from great filmmakers like Villeneuve or Rian Johnson while the Rock just chooses yes men and always has to be the leading man. If any of the 3 wrestlers were to get an oscar I'd bet on it being Bautista

Honestly, I’m not sure. I watched wrestling when he first showed up. He was barely a wrestler - even acting wise.
What John Cena has always been is willing to work harder to improve. No ego - he’ll get so aches, take lessons. But he won’t stop improving.
When he put THAT part of him towards acting, it was game over. He’ll succeed. He needs to.

I wouldn’t say Dave has shown more range more than the fact that John hasn’t picked more diverse projects, but it’s a general rule of thumb that an actor who can do comedy can do anything and in that respect John is a whole bunch better than Dave
Bautista is a better actor for sure, he's actually become a very interesting and competent "character actor". But Cena has the charisma and likablity of a legitimate movie star + he's got way more range and depth than say, the rock. For me Bautista is a way better actor but Cena has that It factor that's rare among actors.

I don't think you give Dave Bautista enough credit. He can absolutely play emotional roles, and has shown he can play comedy and action. He's Cena's equal, if not his superior. Both are really great.

Dave is by far the best actor of the trio. He has a wide range of acting chops. John Cena has expanded his reach and is getting a lot better but the rock generally plays the same character and everything he's in.
I think Cena is a combination of both. While Batista is the better actor and Dwayne has charisma, Cena has both. He is charismatic enough to keep yourself glued to him but doesn't rely on playing himself so he gets self-absorbed on his persona and he can act
I always like to remind ppl that it was Bautista's choice to wear those glasses in Blade Runner. Such a small thing but it shows his insane instinct for acting.

Batista, as an actor, shows the most range, easily jumping from comedy and action roles to more dramatic and even sombre ones.
Cena, on the other hand, is a great entertainer, especially in comedy

wrong, he's been in so many films that were pretty mid or bad, once he found his comedy action roles, that's when he took off. The Rock shines in comedy action blockbuster.

I'd take Batista over John Cena any day. Outside of Peacemaker, there wasn't another piece of evidence of him turning his acting into success. Whereas without Batista's fine work in Knock on the Cabin and the latest Knives Out movie would have fallen flat. I like Cena , he's funny and charasmatic, but from a pure acting point of view I think he's a bit behind the work Batista has been doing.
I'd even go further to say that Cena plays a variation of his likeable goof character with a heart of gold in most of his movies if not all. Just like the rock plays the rock in every movie. But batista's role from Guardians to Knives out to Cabin are 3 completely different people.
Don't forget Bladerunner 2049 and Dune. Bautista, by all accounts, has been putting in the work, and it definitely shows.

@@nathanmichael167 Agreed. I kept seeing Batista tossed in as a 'generic' wrestling actor, and I was getting a little miffed. The guy has taken some interesting roles, done well with them, and seem like he is all-in on becoming an actual actor.
I think it also helps that Cena is just a genuinely awesome person outside of his wrestling and acting.
Worth mentioning in his so far only stint hosting SNL (which needs to be addressed ASAP!) he was FANTASTIC. Showed a ton of range, charisma, and incredible comedic timing.

Coming to the comments seeing Dave get his flowers is my favorite thing about this video existing. Dave Bautista is by far the best actor out of the three, shameful people only acknowledge Cena and Rock. Dave has the most talent as he labels himself an actor, not movie star.
I think it's great wrestlers are finally getting utilized properly. The skills they bring with their ability to tell a story with more than just their lines is something that we get to see more and more through guys like Cena, Batista and I bet Roman Reigns could be fantastic someday too.
Roman Reigns is already fantastic. HIs current run as the "Tribal Chief", an emotionally abusive yet deeply insecure and paranoid mob boss is probably the best "bad guy" WWE has had in years. He took acting lessons during the pandemic and it really shows

I was watching Peacemaker and my wife walked into the room during his big emotional breakdown scene. Just stood there and went “damn I had no idea he can act.”
I think Cena said it best himself in a Savannah Banana video, "we're all in the entertainment business." So he clearly knows his strengths and weaknesses but ultimately does one thing constantly and that's entertain audiences in the ring, on the screen or on Banana League diamond striking out.

i guess getting lazy ist the right term. cos in the beginning of his career he showed his (comedic) talent. I LOVE his performance in "Be Cool" for example. but getting bigger and bigger roles he decided to play the same and same persona again and again. probably for his big paycheck. I really would like to see him in a decent role or in real (not just physical) comedy.

I remeber when John was on wired for that Q&A thingy.
There was a question about why wrestlers shave and he went into detail about how people could grab body hair and how that hurts, went further into detail about using body oil and tight outfits and it ended on him having found another method because "People are scared of the very presence of a grown man wearing something from the 90s"

After seeing Pain and Gain I'm reminded how much acting potential Dwayne had before his ego got worse. I'm glad to see that John Cena and Dave Batista didn't go down that path and improved upon their craft.

I like Cena a lot, he was incredible in Peacemaker, especially the moment on the piano. But the video seems to reference Dave Batista negatively, which feels unfair given his brilliant cameo in Blade Runner 2049 and some solid action performances in Guardians and Spectre.

One of the underrated wrestlers acting example is Adam Copeland in the new Percy Jackson series on Disney+
So, because a lot of people are mentioning Dave Bautista here. I think its from Maven's own youtube channel. Maven said when Dave was 'popping off' in his very first run with Evoloution (Dave, HHH, Orton and Ric), there was a WWE party. And one of the female wrestlers (I think Stacy as he mentioned) husband/BF was a hollywood actor - and for most of the night Dave did was talk to him. And after that he was already going to acting school part-time when he was not on the road.
Even John said he him self went to acting school for a long while. Peacemaker is the show that solidified him as a proper actor by getting a complex role.
Both of these men committed worked hard, did the grind from the bottom. Its why they are doing so well today.
I agree. I followed none percent of his wrestling career. But I will go see a movie or show just because he's in it. I have fun when he's acting. People forget that sometimes you can go see, and wholly enjoy a movie because it was just fun for you. Not everything has to be a masterpiece to be exactly what we need it to be. Not every performance needs to be Oscar worthy.
I will note that Bautista is a solid second place for me. Not only have I enjoyed Drax.......but he has shown some chops in Bladerunner and Dune.
The thing about Cena that is interesting is that he is a student of transition, and it seems he learned the lesson well. He took a VERY 90's-style path into fame: start in low- and mid-budget action -> score some work as a punchline in some full-strength comedies -> supporting roles in RomComs, usually the handsome new boyfriend to be overthrown, or some superhuman competitive suitor -> comedic relief with dramatic parts in something GrimDark, usually a horror film or an arthouse piece from Cannes or SXSW -> ensemble lead in a B-movie, adult-oriented genre film -> breakout lead in an auteur-driven passion project, usually some kind of Oscar Bait needing lateral stunt-casting to stand out -> Stop typecasting into Action and only do action movies that support their artistic body of work, not their bankroll
The path was invented by Arnold, and just about every Hollywood muscle-god has either tried following the path and failed, or failed because they DIDN'T take the path; the Rock included (he just can't get a dramatic breakout that doesn't default into some kind of action premise.)

I think that in some cases, Dave Batista may actually be a better Hollywood actor than John Cena. He can play many similar roles that Cena could and pull them off, but has also had some more dramatic depth I feel. While I didn’t find the movie itself good, Batistas performance in a Knock at the Cabin to be quite good. Both are quite good honestly and I love seeing them pop up in movies these days, Something I feel the Rock wishes was still the case in his career instead of it being tiring at this point.
I have never once seen John Cena in a movie.

I think the elusion to Dave Bautista being one of the “other normal” wrestlers turned actors is inaccurate because Dave has made it his mission to stop being typecast as the big dude, and hes been very successful in that mission. Sure to a mainstream audience, being the dumb muscle in Marvel movies didnt do him any favors but he even had some very good deep emotional stuff going on screen, his roles in Blade Runner: 2049 and Dune also help his mission.

Dwayne Johnson is being criminally underrated here. Both Cena and Johnson have played a lot of basic big guy action roles, Cena has 1 other role (who is still largely an action hero) while Johnson's roles in Get Smart, Gridiron Gang, the Game Plan, or even Witch Mountain show actual diversity.

Cena is ridiculously stiff in 12 Rounds. The action film they built around him was pretty legit but his emotions were flat & weird.
I thought he was a joke in his earlier career in movies (The Marine, etc). I can't recall the exact point where I thought "I like this dude. He's funny and seems super cool", but his performance as Peacemaker is what sealed the deal for me.
Also, his work with Make a Wish is super impressive and should be noted.

I agree with a lot of the things this video says about John Cena. I actually think he's pretty funny. But the way they ignored the work Dave Batista has been doing is outrageous. He has done a lot and you can tell Batista is truly trying to be a great actor.
Totally agree, during the suicide squad movie, John REALLY surprised me with how believable his character got at the end, even though it was a complete genre shift.

John and Batista are honestly good actors. Hope they do more in Hollywood. Also recently Edge has done well on Percy Jackson as Ares, he was a solid villain, and I think if Edge takes notes from John and Dave, he could do well in Hollywood.

His one scene in Blade Runner 2049 alone is an argument for Dave Bautista being not just one of, but THE best wrestler turned actor ever. His soft spoken emotional intensity contrasted with his physical presence makes such an indelible impression that even if the scene didn't turn violent it would still have an impact. I like the way Cena's career is going, but I can honestly say that if an ex-wrestler ever wins an Oscar I would expect it to be Dave before anyone else. Lumping him in with guys like The Rock who, even when he does good work in good movies, just plays the same guy every time, and whose ego won't allow his characters to lose a fight or look weak on screen for any reason, is just plain doing The Animal dirty. He's not just a wrestler who became a movie star, he's a character actor who happens to be able to fold a full-sized man into an origami swan with his bare hands.

of the 3 (Dwayne Johnson, Dave Batista and John Cena), Bautista blends into more roles. Dwayne did some of his better acting earlier on, in Snitch, for example, that does not require him to take off his shirt.
Cena is funny, and he can cry. However so far, his physique makes all of his acting memorable. seeing a giant muscular man cry, seeing his wide mouth and eyes complaining about the Decepticon, He is still John Cena in the roles he plays. Perhaps we'll know him more as the Peacemaker as that role fits him like his uniform.
