I understand you. I really do. But I guess it was only a matter of politics and time (the son henry viii was a king to be at that time so any alliance would be long term and must be thought it through). The father henry Vii was old and any marriage/alliance would surely be short term (plus he already got heirs). Katherine at that point was not that much of an atractive candidate for a queen.. SO they pushed the dad to her more to align their interest in keeping henry viii free. The fuss over marrying a realtive to Arthur was only an excuse to keep her away from the son... IMO That was what I felt while watching the show.

That's what we call an incoherence. Historically, Henry VII did want to keep Catherine and her dowry, especially because She and his son "hadn't" consumed the wedding. He asked her parents if they were ok if she married him or his heir, the future Henry VIII. Although the Catholic Kings wanted their daughter to be Queen of England, they found Henry VII too old for her and the match not interesting enough (at Henry's death, the throne would have passed to a son of his previous marriage, so she would have barely be a dowager queen, so Spanish interests in England wouldn't have lasted very long, especially because Henry VII was old). But Prince Henry was 10 at the time and, also he was still young, it was a better match: Catherine would have been queen and mother of a king of England, plus her husband and her were six years apart and, as the eldest, she could have been a good influence. The negociations for the second wedding were quite long because of the different journeys between England, Rome (to earn a papal license) and Spain (Isabel of Castilla and Henry VII died meanwhile) but the wedding happened.
Here, they decided to add this stupid plot with Margaret Beaufort and to make all this fuss with the fact that this wedding may be sinful and whatnot. They were so bad at plot writing that they became flimsy with their OWN story by adding all this stuff with Margaret and Catherine. THAT WAS SO FUCKIN STUPID ! And that's some people like you don't understand why it's not ok for her to marry her dead husband's brother but not with the father !!!!!

Margaret Beaufort has the role of "villainess" in these stories since The White Queen era...
Reading her book (The Red Queen) made me dislike her even more: since childhood she believed she was "special", destined to greatness and sainthood...
When reality slapped her in the face she deluded herself that her son was destined to be king by God will, when there a lot more heirs even in her side...
When Henry became King she got worse since "God was by her side", also was the worst mother-in-law possible for Elizabeth of York.
To me the worse is that we share the birthday date... >_>

Finally made it to season 2 episode 2. I can't believe Philippa Gregory approved a lot that's been happening in the series. I literally just watched her get taken from her horse and physically fight two men with a third coming at her while pregnant. No one told me this was basically a fantasy with bits and pieces thrown in from the book. I feel like my intelligence has been slapped upside my head with her physically battling these grown men.

I find it funny. Catherine claims during her testament that Margaret Beaufort was there on their wedding night and she told them both Catherine and Arthur not to consummate until there are old enough. It seemed logical because Margaret was 12 or 13 when she gave birth to Henry and never had any other children again because her body was not developed enough to mature its growth before babies come.
She was regent until lucky for her only grandson Henry was turned 17 before her death. Maybe Margaret did have her suspicious that Catherine was up to something. Though, Margaret was the only defender for the Tudor which cripple them until her great grand daughter Elizabeth I had surpassed what she could have dreamed of. A real woman who made England strong and unified as she did.

I’m really confused why they showed a scene of them consummating their marriage when in real life that never actually happened, and then claims that it’s based off history. Was it for the drama? Throughout this show I’ve had mixed feelings about Catherine.

    • @lexigrimhaive
      @lexigrimhaive 4 роки тому +31

FizzyDizzy Studios No one can say for certain whether or not the consummation actually happened. For a long time most people believed Katherine when she said they didn’t sleep together. But more recently opinions are changing. For example, the belief that Arthur was sickly was due to a mistranslation during the Victorian era. In reality, he was a fit, healthy young man felled by a sudden illness. That being, there would be no reason for them NOT to have consummated their marriage. They were married & of age.

Margaret actually was regent, just not at this time. She was regent a few months before her death when Henry VIII had just come to the thrown but was still 17.
There is no way to know for sure if Catherines first marriage was consummated. She swore it wasn't and was deeply religious and given the time that's not to be taken lightly. Any "evidence" against her could have been doctored or created by Wolsey during the legatine court.
Catherine would be entitled to Dowager Princess even if the marriage wasn't consummated. She would be entitled to this as that is the title she was known as for 7 years after stating the marriage wasn't consummated.

Being a dowager has nothing to do with a marriage's consummation. They were married. Arthur died. She became a widow and dowager. She now held the title and property her deceased husband previously held including the dowry that she brought with her marriage. All of which is collectively known as dower. She was a dower holder. Hence, dowager.

I think she waited until she knew she wasn't pregnant to play the Virgin card. She was ambitious, a liar, a manipulator and she seduced a young boy that wasn't even a teenager yet to get what she wanted. People make it sound like she had no other choices and she was so nice. She could have returned to Spain and made another marriage or accepted the role of widowed princess of Wales. That wasn't good enough for her.

The English wanted her dowry, so they tried to marry her to Henry VII, in order to keep Henry VIII's hand free for marriage, but Ferdinand was opposed to that. But after Isabella died and Juana the Mad became Queen, the English were reluctant to let Catherine and Henry VIII marry, as Ferdinand was delaying paying her dowry, and Spain wasn't as powerful anymore. And Henry VIII actually rejected the proposal when he turned 14, and Ferdinand made Catherine the ambassador to England, so she can stay back and try to get the marriage alliance back on track. She was basically a prisoner in England at this point, and didn't even have enough money to support herself and her staff. Henry VIII and Catherine only wed after he became King, and that was because he was in love with her at this point, and she was quite possibly already pregnant with his child, who was unfortunately stillborn.
