BEAD SEALER TIPS, I think the reason they don't put directions on the can is because there are different ways to approach it for different situations.
Doug Aldrian's post is invaluable. Before I saw his post I went ahead with some of the science you used, and some of my thoughting.
I put 1 coat of sealer each on both of the rim bead surfaces, and 1 coat each on the tire beads. I let it all dry, which is fast because it has tolulene in it that dries fast like acetone. The used tire I was putting on had some damage to the bead area so I pulled the flap back and schlunked some sealer in there too. So ten minutes later I slopped on a bunch of dishsoap water on the rim and tire. It slipped right on there and pop pop it's holding air fine. It's like you say to keep the soapwater on the sealer and it doesn't pull the sealer off. I'll keep doing it that way until it requires another way. Thanks a TON for you vids and info!
Excellent idea! Was gonna put the bead sealer like some other UA-cam videos by not removing tire and just gooping it on rim and on bead. However, your idea of just applying it to rim like a primer paint makes much more sense! And since your discovery of using soap doesn't peal the bead sealer off, it really helps alot. This method will save alot of people time instead of applying it wet.
finally found a manufacturer of this stuff that gave directions. the way they show it is to mount the tire first but not seat the bead. brush the bead sealant onto the bead and then inflate the tire. the rubber will fill in the gaps and dry to a solid but flexible consistency.

Fixed a leak on my motorbike front tire with this great product. I think its best to put on the bead seal and pump the tire back in place as quick as possible. Then the bead seal will dry in place. Really has not lost any air at all now! Just a bit of paint flaking and corrosion inside the rim was to blame. Been 7 weeks now and the tire is still solid.
Hi Charlie, very informative videos you make, keep up the good work. I am a car mechanic from Germany. I started to use a manual tire changer 12 years ago in my barn at home. I guess for most people here this is very unknown and they only know the modern electric machines. Mine looks a little different to your one and the ones you can buy from harbor freight over there. Actually mine is from the 70s. I ordered a bubble balancer one week ago when coming across your video although I have a electric spinning balancer I am curious how good it will work. The bead leak sealer is a very new thing to me. I think in the workshops they would sell you a new rim but why not trying this. Great stuff. cheers Patrick
Thanks Patrick for the compliments. Definitely give the bubble balancer a try. It would be interesting to bubble balance then put it on your electric balancer to see how good it turned out. Yeah, I wasn't ready to buy a new wheel, so the sealer was a good experiment, and a successful one, thank goodness.
I worked at Discount Tire, to use this stuff you put a light coat on both the tire bead and on the rim and then inflate the tire. Don't wait for it to cure before putting it on, put it on right away.

Damnskippy ! Same brand I use to use on the yellow cab tires ,applied it on the rim at first like you just did but on both sides .Then later on I just would apply it only on both sides of the tire bead .Then mounted tires with soap no problem.Like your videos, great stuff.

I had wheel looking pitted like this, I used Aluminum JB weld on pits then sanded smooth, an was happy with results!

Bead sealer works pretty good. Some people have used Flex Seal spray or liquid as a bead sealer as well. I've seen some other UA-cam videos where they put the sealer around the ridge of the tire.
Ive had to use pipe thread sealant (pipe dope), when in a pinch. 😮

Just an FYI -- the company that makes that particular bead sealer offers directions online, found here -- www.31inc.com/Content/Files/instructions/BeadSealer.pdf. (I have it as well, and was also surprised at there being no directions on the can). The directions are very brief, but they do say to "apply a light coat of BEAD SEALER on the outside of the bead sealing area of the tire." Lots of folks recommend putting it on the rim, but this company says to put it on the tire. thanks for a very informative video.
zqwxzqwx Thanks for that info. Yeah, it still leaves me wondering if I should pump up the tire with the sealer wet or dry, lol. Reading it implies wet, though it didn't specifically say it. I did it dry, but I guess it really doesn't matter as it still worked correctly. ☺

Thanks for posting your vids! Well done and gives me food for thought on a couple slow leaks on my wifes BPA Ultra with the factory chrome GM rims. We've had local tire places work on it, but it's still slow leaking, but much slower than happens in your original vid. Like your weight bar home built tire holder! What do you use to edit your vids?

I find this videos strangely therapeutic. I just had a bad experience trying to mount new winter tires using pry bars. Scratched&scuffed the heck of the steel rim. Declared defeat and ended up mounting it at Walmart for $11/tire.
But I still have the same issue with my summer, alloy tires - slow leak along the rim. Will try to follow your vides on how to use manual tire mount tool.

Excellent video. I've seen other users of that style tire changer and they struggled so much. I ask myself why don't they use a darn bead lock or even vice grips! I've got a tire that needs that stuff. I'm not a fan of Slime.

My 05 TSX alloy rims were leaking so i was like, f it, and got a set of cheap Accord steel rims. it needed new tires anyways so it was not too inconvenient. But when i do see the OEM alloys on other TSXs, I get a weee jealous ;-(
One day, i do dream of driving on my alloys again. but probably not, my tsx will probably be junked before these current tires wear out

Charlie Sarsfield just off of watching this video I sub to your channel I'm in the process of trying to figure out my slow leak prob on my 22 inch rims/tires after I've had the bends taken out of them, some spots welded, sanded, polished mounted and balance and I'm STILL having slow leak probs especially on my rear driver side and front passenger side rim/tire that's how I got to your channel besides the sealant are there any suggestions you may have??
Hi there. Sounds like all the work has been done quite well on the wheel. As long as the bead area is not out of round and the tire isn't damaged, the sealer should be good... if needed. Have you tried the soap test (spray dish soap and water) to make sure the leak is in the bead area? It's also a good idea to soap test around the valve stem, just in case.
Charlie Sarsfield OK so I just did the soapy water test and found that I have a small crack at the base of the spokes of my rear driver side rim that's letting air our of my tire I went and got a small tube of liquid metal to put over it to hopefully seal the crack and stop air leaking out of that tire. I also did the same soapy water test on the front passenger rim/tire and found that I don't have a bead leak but a small puncture in my tire that is letting air slowly our of that tire. I marked it because thankfully I have to go get my oil changed tomorrow morning at 9am and will have them patch it and that should stop air leaking out of that tire. IF all else fails I will get metal putty for the rear driver rim and slime for the from passenger tire to further remedy those probs. Being that they don't make my rims anymore I can't buy a replacement and the spot its in I'm sure it can't be welded so If all of that fails I will just have to buy new rims. Thanks for your help you have a lifelong sub and friend in me sir!

Hi just paint it on rim with wheel in place both sides but gas in the tire blast on then you are ready to go , it will not leak done hundreds of tires like that
I had a 2 month trying experience getting a tire to seal. Actually got the bead to seal. Yet tire would go flat when driven. At first I thought a bump broke the seal. I found out at highway speeds the tire would leak. Say over 65 MPH. It was the valve stem. It got broken during one of the mountings. Centrifugal force would bend it over, and it would leak.
Interesting. Sounds like that was quite the mind bender to figure out. :)
@@sunny5rising It was very frustrating. Car could sit in drive for a week. Drive around in town, all OK. Then get a few miles down the highway, flat. I did a morning of watching TPMS. Get to highway speed. Pressure would start dropping. When I decided it had to be the stem. I pushed the stem over and it would leak.
Video title caught my attention so I watched with interest. I've never known tire sealer to do much more than make a mess. I would rate your results as inconclusive since your good results may have been due to the new tire tire and had nothing to do with the tested product. I'd have liked to see the old tire mounted just temporarily to see the results.

Questions for you
1. I don't have a compression tank for air which I could definitely use for an impact gun for all other repairs but at least to seat the tire without using the ether trick! I have a small one I plug into my cigarette lighter but it doesn't have much force although I did manage to seat my first tire with fire and the second using the portable air tank by putting four 4 x4 fence posts pressing around the tire to keep it pinched and it worked. Any suggestions for specs if I were to buy a compression tank. How many gallons/PSI needed to seat tire, minimum requirements. What do you have in this vid?
2. One of my tires has a slight tear in the bead and the metal cord is exposed but the rubber hasn't torn off and I was wondering if i could use a product like this black bead sealer gooey stuff and let it cure overnight to fix it and then mount the tire. I don't want it to tear even more putting it on. I am planning on mounting it with rip on the inside of the rim and starting that section leaning over and pushing the secure side down for the first half that way it never endures stress not from the first side of the rim or the second especially when using the spoons or tire irons.
Thanks...haha... glad you like the outtakes. :) I have several compressors, but the one used in this video is my smaller 10gal/125psi, which is 1-1/2 HP. The tire... I understand about the tire, but personally, I would replace it... to be safe. I simply wouldn't trust it.

Thanks so much for taking a look at that vid. I read the article you sent me. I tried one of the many methods listed there and used an RTV Silicone gasket maker by permatex and so far so good. Only mounted and seated the tire last night but I checked it an hour later and no apparent leaks, holding at around 32 psi and still same today. I also sprayed some soap and water around the rim and valve to look for bubbles and all seems good. I'll post an update here in a week just in case anyone else has the same type of tear, might be of valuable info :)

Yes, it did last. Two years at least. After that I didn't have the car anymore.
Im thinking about doing the same thing. I have one chrome rim that will drop 20 psi every 3 days because of corrosion. Is that stuff still working?? Im not sure if I want to do this or just some used wheels and tires. I already bought the bead sealer. Thanks, Kevin
Kevin, Yes... the bead sealer is still holding and working just fine. Have not yet had to buy new wheels or do any further repair. So far, so good. :)

i would have thought( Im no expert ) that going a little further cleaning up the bead (fine grit sandpaper to say 400 grit??) would help eliminate the bead glue? yes/no?
I'm no expert either. Perhaps the sandpaper would help. Some of the pits on these wheels are pretty darn deep, so I opted for the sealer.

I did a repair on my chrome wheel a few months back without using the bead sealer, I only used soap and water, at that time it hold air with no leaks, but yesterday that wheel was down to 18PSI while the rest was at 32PSI. I will check for any nails or screws, but I think it started to leak again since I had a hard time sealing the bead after mounting the tire and the chrome had some really deep gouges from oxidation... I used a grinder to even up the surface where the bead sits prior to installing the tire but I used some anti-rust paint too, and it was slippery to the touch when it dried, that may have cause it to leak air out.
Anyway, any updates on this? I will try applying the same bead sealer on the bead and put air immediately hoping it will make a reliable tight seal for a long period of time. What do you think?

Talking to yourself keeps you sane, haha. As far as the topic at hand, I say go for it! I don't have this car anymore, but the fix has lasted years. While I had the car, the problem never came back since using the sealer.

Yes, to this date there have been no leaks.
Where the bead seals is far too ruff that has to be leveled off. It leaked out right away because the gap was too large between rubber and aluminium when you had pressure in the tire.

Indeed, yes. It's just interesting that the leak took 10 months to show back up. After using the sealer though, no problems.
The iron tip just ruined the black sealer you applied inside the rim; if it leaks ,do it again,but this time take it to a tire shop,they'll have a regular no contact machine.(lol,5 years too late...or maybe not...).

Just clean the corrosion as best as you can and put the bead sealer right before you mount the tire on both the tire and rim. Thats what my garage did

problem is, i dont spot any needles or holes in my rear tyre nor is the rim bent or anything
but in a span of 2-3 days i am losing my air pressure from 40 to 8-9.
I cant figure out the problem, can anyone help me out please?
If you haven't already, check the valve stem. Of course check the center, but also check for leaks around the edge while moving it around a little.
Can a inner tube be used if you dont have 24 hours for the sealant to dry???
Although an inner tube is always an option, the instructions (on the can) for the sealant does not say that you have to wait for the sealant to dry. Just Apply, inflate, then check for leaks. The way I did it in the video was simply my way of trying it.
I think my tire shop fixed my wheel leak,they grind-ed off the corrosion on the inside of the bead..And said a tube would not work,said if leak is not fixed a wheel replacement or a shop- that specializes in that..Thanks for your reply..
Stacy Clarkson Makes me curious as to why an inner tube would not work. Maybe have something to do with valve placement? Maybe a sensor on the wheel? Don't know, just guessing at this point, lol.

I have a chrysler 300m 2001. Ive been having alot of problems with my tire. it always gets air leak. No matter the new tire i buy it always gets an air leak. Is it the rim or the the wheel? I kind of want to sell my car. What should I do?
jaxyhale Shouldn't be too hard to find the leak. If ya feel like fixing it, take a look at my first tire repair video. It goes through a step by step to find the leak.

It is the soap that is corroding the aluminum should always use a ruglide tire installation lube
Truly, I've never had a problem with using soap on any wheel.

I've been using dish soap for mounting hundreds of tires since at least 1965 on steel, aluminum, and magnesium wheels.. Corrosion has occurred on some wheels not on others. I'm careful about what I use since the wheels are on collector cars and are irreplaceable. I've attributed the corrosion to salt used for snow removal although I can't conclusively prove it..
Always hated aluminium wheels.
Decent video but doesnt prove the bead sealer works. You mounted a new tire. Its possible the old tire was the problem.
