Thanks for this, I had a lock on a handle of a tool bag I bought secondhand. I don't have tools like you do, but since I don't need the lock I just drilled a little hole where you were sticking the tool and it worked like a charm...bobbi pin opened it right up

@@noahway13 your not doing anything wrong. It comes down to binding order. Example; when tensioning CW certain pins will bind and may make it easy or hard to pick, OR when tensioning CCW it changes the binding order. Everything works the same either way but the binding order changes. Stop practicing CCW and spend more time the other way. You will pop that thing.

Hey Big Al, thanks for showing this. I'm sure it will help out many pickers. I, myself have been unable to do this "by pass" as my tool is too big to fit. I tried forcing it a little bit but it got bent. Luckily my wife, who must have dated other pickers, knew how to straighten it out! She also let me knew that if I bent it again I was on my own. Needless to say, I now don't stick my tool any where it doesn't belong ...

A note to others having trouble fitting in the knife: try multiple locations!
I have a brand-new 175D for which my Sparrows knife will only fit on the right side of the leftmost code wheel, when the wheel is positioned at the correct code. From there the bypass works just the same though. You can feel for the correct wheel position since it's the only one that lets the knife slip through.

I, too, wish I had watched this one before bending my shim in hit or miss! Better even, this tells me that if easy-entries on all code wheels are lined up, that alignment must be related to the set code. Using this principle, I was able to decode a 175 found on a waste yard. Then, I watched one decoding video that basically applied the same principle. In fact, the exact line up of all bypass points is within a quarter step of the set code. No additional turning/counting needed. After I change combination, the alignment reveals the new combination.

Nicely done. It's fun to learn. This is part of why I enjoy the locksport thing so much. Each lock is like a puzzle of sorts. Even the small ones that can easily be cut or broken open some way are still fun to try open by manipulation. I also enjoy upgrading them. When I'm in my humble little lock lab, my day job melts away and my brain gets happy.

My bad. I find what usually works best is going on side of second dial and slowly rotating it until you feel the decoder slide in nicely. It’s quite tricky at first but after you do it several times it gets easier. Just be patient. Also you want the right tool. Sparrows and Peterson both make great ones. They are super easy to destroy so I highly recommend getting a few of them. Because once they get bends they’re not as good. Hope this helps.

That would be incorrect. If you look at the internal workings of this lock you'll see the left side of the code wheels are flat. You can slide the bypass tool through in any wheel position. The right side of the code wheel has a smaller diameter shelf to make it slightly more difficult to find the true gate with a decoder.

I have been saying the same thing for years. It shocks me after the videos they choose to do NOTHING to improve. Their money is spent on advertising and pushing products like this out quickly. This is why many of use do what we can to educate the public.

Funny thing is that Lowes and Home Depot still have the 175 on the shelf right next to the 185 which can not be bypassed with this method. To be fair they do rate their locks on a number scale and this one is not rated to be very secure

I would suggest you find something other than a pop can. In my experience, the metal in aluminum cans is too soft. It's possible, but I haven't been able to make one work.
I have a tool for this, however, as I like to improvise tools, I have also made a few on my own.
I recently removed and disassembled a DVD-ROM drive and harvested two steel plates. I've cut several bypass knives that work well on my Master 175. If you try this, just remember, steel has to be very thin to fit between the code wheels. Then, remember to only bypass on the left side of the wheels as they are flat and don't require finding a flat spot. Only the right side of the code wheels has a smaller diameter shelf that makes it difficult to bypass without finding the flat spot.

I like to insert the knife with the angle side up, that way if it catches on something it may be more likely to slide under rather than on top giving the angle you're looking for. Just my preference.

It's a shame you had to add "How to bypass the RIGHT way" when you proceed to show the wrong way.
I'm new to lockport and picking, yet I have seen multiple videos that showed me how to properly bypass a Master 175. This is not one of them.
The left side of the number wheels is flat. The right side has a smaller diameter shelf. Bypassing from the left side is simple and doesn't require finding a flat spot on the wheel. It's clear in any position.
Your point this bypass is easier towards the center of the lock is echoed on every one of those other videos, and true in my experience as well. However, if you bypass from the left side of the third wheel instead of the right side of the second wheel, you no longer have to find the flat spot.
    It really is that simple.
    Sincerely,
    Barely A. Lockpicker
