    HOW I MIRROR FINISH A BAR
    I start with an 80 grit flap disc on my angle grinder then I use my drill with 50 mm round sanding discs . I start with 150 grit then go through the following Grits 240-400-800 Then once I get to the following Grits I use a small squirt of WD-40 1200-1500-2000-2500-3000. The WD40 helps to lubricate the discs and stops the sanding disk binding up with the metal powder . Then after that I use my buffer wheel on my bench grinder to get a perfect mirrored finish on it.

      REGULATOR SET POINT and adjustments
      0.12MPa Copper
      0.10MPa Brass / Bronzes
      0.08MPa Aluminium
      I set the regulator at 0.10MPa for brass and when it gets up closer to its melting point I backed the furnace off to 0.08MPa or even lower to make sure I don’t accidentally overheat the brass and burn off the zinc.

    I'm not an electrician, but I played one in the Navy (no degree or tradesman's rank, is what I mean) - those look like capacitors. And once you showed the label on the side, it confirmed it. The "uF" is microfarads which is the SI symbol and measurement for capacitance. So just to be safe, I did a quick search and found other similar ones that I can't post a link to here due to YT spam-filters, but they're out there. :) No drop bears today. Just drop-capacitors!
    Also, those super thin copper bar pours are just doin' it for me. Eye pleasing and soul quenching! Love it!

    • @aidenwallin3523
      @aidenwallin3523 13 днів тому +12

      I caught the microFarad label too. Definitely capacitors of some type. You probably know more about them than me, but I recognized the shape and the unit from all of Backyard Scientist's giant capacitor bank experiments.

    • @johnarmenta2199

      @@robertsnowdon6932 - From Wiki: The drop bear (sometimes dropbear) is a hoax in contemporary Australian folklore featuring a predatory, carnivorous version of the koala. This imaginary animal is commonly spoken about in tall tales designed to scare tourists. While koalas are typically docile herbivores (and are not bears), drop bears are described as unusually large and vicious marsupials that inhabit treetops and attack unsuspecting people (or other prey) that walk beneath them by dropping onto their heads from above

      Thankfully they have the discharge resistor across the terminals to keep them safe. Without that, those can keep a charge almost forever and could be dangerous in the wrong situation.
      The capacitors appear to be 3 x 8 uF in parallel which is 24 uF at a 440V rating and could give you a bit of a surprise if not discharged. The resistor is a 6.8K (blue - 6, grey - 8, red - x100 = 6800 = 6.8k) probably a 2 watt (hard to tell exactly) which is to slowly discharge the capacitors once power is removed.

      From what I could dig up, the Ducon GPM series is a paper-electrolyte capacitor so apart from the can, there's likely no melt-ables inside and may even possibly contain PCB ( polychlorinated biphenyls) so best leave them intact.

      Indeed 👍🏻. I love the way the magpies come around when I’m melting and I don’t even notice they’re there until I hear them whistling and singing behind me !
      .Now as crazy as it might sound, I gave them a big feed of cat biscuits and I put the little bit that was left in the bag up on the bench, and then about 15 minutes later the crow came and took the bag of cat biscuits off the bench and flew away with it!!!
      I can’t prove it in any way apart from the fact I saw him flying off with it !! the cheeky little bugger. I wish I had it on film but unfortunately it’s my word against his if I ever have to take the crows to court👍🏻.
      And I’ve heard some pretty crazy stories in court, and who the hell is gonna believe a crow stole my cat biscuits off the bench in a sealed bag 😳

    6:00 those are capacitors. Think of them as batteries that you can charge with electricity at any speed, slow or fast, and then discharge them at any speed (slow or fast), sort of like a bucket of water. Inside they are full of oil, comonly they use mineral oil, but the old ones can contain oil with pcbs (which are carcenogenic). Sometimes the housing is aluminium, and inside is a roll of paper and steel foil, which is the actual part that stores the current.

    • @Iliketurtles12121
      @Iliketurtles12121 13 днів тому +2

      but dont try to take them apart untill you are sure those are discharged, given how old they are, it is likely that they are but it is a good idea to double check

    • @user-jo5le4og6n
      @user-jo5le4og6n 13 днів тому +2

      Mmm not filled with oil. You are thinking AC can transformers (old ones did have PCBs). A capacitor is a sandwich made up of two sheets of material separated by an insulator. Charge accumulates on the surfaces. Some cylindrical capacitors are made with oiled paper as the insulator but the oiling is just to facilitate wrapping process.
      Anyway likely nothing useful for major melting inside the beasties 😊
      EDIT: I misspoke! Some older power capacitors are oil filled like transformers. Now I want to see what’s inside…

    • @ismellburning8492
      @ismellburning8492 12 днів тому

      @user-jo5le4og6n search oil capacitor into google. They are defiantly a thing, often used as motor start at resonate capacitors in microwaves or other devices in conjunction with a transformer

    I say this everytime: watch those capacitors! They can hold a charge for a long ass time and can be lethal under the right circumstance. Never hurts to short them out quick before throwing them around.

    I've taken to pre-roasting varnished copper. Hit it with a heat just high enough to burn off the varnish. I do the same to roast the liners and paint off of aluminum cans. I got the idea from a documentary about an aluminum recycling plant.

    those 3 things you pulled and asked about are condensators/capacitors of 8micro farads
    back then they told us that a capacitor of 1 farad would be as big as a house :'D

    Would love to see one of your larger bars, milled and polished to perfection on all sides, or maybe if a copper bar, leave the top rough to kind of show the contrast of what lies beneath.
    Always love your content and look forward to starting the weekend off right with your latest video.

    Hi from France ! I'm looking to your melts since a year and just wanted to say you that I like it, sometimes, one of you videos pops in my list, and it's always a nice moment to see it. I'm not a fan of "regular" ASMR, but you made something else, sometimes I just wait for the huge steak-time, sometimes for the dog-time, and I'm always fascinated by the different metals you pour. Not only the incredible vault you stacked, but also the physical properties during the melting process. Satisfying ice cooling or boiling ingots !!! Keep creating, that's pretty hypnotizing ;)

  • @TheWabbit

    That was a load of meltables! Some really nice copper and the thick aluminum, and even some good brass. All in a small package.
    They made some good looking bars!
    Were still struggling in the Midwest to get half the temperture you are, plus were getting a ton of rain, Michigan is missing the tornado's though since it's too chilly yet, just 100 miles south though its warm enough and they have had a few.
    I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend, nothing like a good BigstackD video to get friday off to a good start with the weekend fingertips away!
