- Aidan, our product genius, takes us on a 320-mile journey in the BMW i4 and offers expert advice on how to optimise your electric vehicle for long trips.
BMW claims the i4 will have a range of up to 363 miles (WLTP rated) with an 80kWh battery pack. This can be charged at up to 150 kW, providing up to 80 percent of the car's driving range in just 35 minutes. It’s likely that as well as offering a choice of rear- and all-wheel drive, the i4 will be available with a choice of battery sizes.

Great video as always mate, solid achievement on the range!
Great vid. Love seeing info on efficiency of the edrive 40. I should get mine in November, and cannot wait!! We need more real world tests like this. Most of my road trips will be pulling a caravan, so I will roughly have to halve the economy down to around 2 miles/kWh. Should mean only a few short charge stops down to Cornwall from the Midlands though. Very informative, very articulate, very good indeed. Keep up the good work Aiden.
Absolutely superb video 👏!!
Great job. I’m very impressed with my i4. In black!
Excellent video - getting my I4 in September - Ordered in Feb 22 and am told it will be available July (despite not needing until Sep given exisiting lease). Great job BMW
Great video, thanks. Do you recommend using the active cruise control and lane keeping assistant, or is it more efficient to do those functions yourself?
I had one along test drive, you need to use comfort mode thats the normal mode. I found it better on normal roads rather than motorway, the regeneration was really good, it shows you how much regeneration you have done as well
Unsure the i4 comes equipped with Adaptive Mode Drive. In my current 330e I use Adaptive Drive and BMW advises you use the NAV system (in built) for your destination as it helps drive up efficiency. Will be good to get your thoughts on this if ever at all tested. If not perhaps will be worth a test even though the condition might be different from one test to the other - will be interesting to see the outcome

Nice result! What would be the range at freezing temperatures and different (higher) speeds?

Aidan, Will the nav system automatically add a charge waypoint if you create a route longer than the current battery state can support?
I have an i4 and it does. It likes you to arrive with 10% so you tend to find you actually have a longer range than the car suggests.
Actually a really useful range test - there aren’t too many on the i4 40.
Couple of questions: how much impact do you think lower temperatures would have?
If you park the car (for say a couple of days) would it lose charge? My issue is driving to the airport and leaving it there for a few days.
Could you advise which regen mode you used? Adaptive?
Was the car equipped with adaptive cruise and did you use it?
I can leave mine for several days and the charge remains the same. There’s just one regen mode when you move the drive selector to B. However if you leave it in D it will predict roundabouts and junctions and start to brake for you.
@@robru thanks for the reply. Most useful
Hi Graham, thank you for the comment. Aidan did use D-Mode. Furthermore, if the temperature was low and if your car is parked for a very long time then this could potentially affect the mileage.

Is this a low car, like model 3 tesla
Talking about turning aircon off, 50-60 mph driving etc just reinforces the belief some have that range is an issue. It’s simply not in 99.9% os situations, who drives for 200 miles a day let alone 300 miles? A carefree 220 miles, including a bit of fun, aircon turned on, and not even thinking about range is a much better message and the reality.
That's what I was thinking. Yes, on holidays to Cornwall, I will worry about the range, especially pulling a caravan, but for every day use, it will be topped up overnight on the Zappi, and be completely care free. Should be around 280 - 300 miles on any given day. Plenty!!😁
How do you set the airco off in the i4. By setting the automatic climate control to off?
just tell it to the voice assistant 🙂
Hi, thanks for the comment. You can either turn off via voice control or press off twice in the settings. If you have any further questions, please contact:

I have set my car on the settings, I received my car last Monday and was told that my car would do 360 circa miles give or take 40 or 50 these brings it down to 310. Which I was happy with, however, I have charged the car twice and every time I’ve only got the car up to 230 miles someone please tell me if this is right? I feel like I misled massively by BMW. I travel to and from Bristol every day about 72 mile round-trip so having those additional miles was a game changer for me hence why I went for the i4.
I thought the range started at 358 miles on m40
Cracking open the window consumes more power, because your breaking the aerodynamics, than the use of AC.
One could turn on the fan w/o the A/C compressor or crack open the sunroof ;-)
i think it would of been better to keep the air con on, as having as much as a real world figure as possible is important
AC will probably draw about 3 kW. So if it was on max all the time it would have about eaten up those 7 miles of range that he had left. The actual power draw will depend on the outside temperature, though.
what are the rim size
Hi Benjamin,
Thanks for the comment. The wheels are 19” on this vehicle.
Many thanks, Jardine Motors Group.
3:34 it’s without further ado. Not adieu.
304 miles on a single charge 😳 My Volvo C40, is blessed if it can touch 240 miles 🤦🏻
