  • So it's been just over one year since I chopped my 1992 GQ Patrol Wagon into an extra cab ute! I have been on countless trips & done so many more modifications & repairs & wanted to reflect on the past year, where it's been & what I've done & talk a bit about the process & the future. Plus I put a poll to everyone on Instagram to ask questions about the process & car so check out my answers to your questions in this video also.

Yeah it’s kind of hard to for me in the sense that.. like I had so much going on? Like it wasn’t just a chop it was engineering 5 years of other mods too but yeah what I can talk about I will. It’s no secret, obviously the 37’s and beadlocks cannot be engineered in Aus but if they could I would. It’s absolutely 1000000% legal for everything but them.

Your space cab dimensions are about perfect Timmy. If you went for a longer space cab then you'd end up wanting suicide doors for access reasons, as the longer cab is harder to organise/reach gear and you end up constantly swapping between drivers and pass side to reach gear...
A longer space cab needs a wheelbase extension too, just to keep the symmetry and look "right".
Same deal with dual cab chops- to work well they need a chassis extension and even then the proportions hardly ever look "right". Anyway, great channel, love the content

    • @timmyhasheart
      @timmyhasheart  5 місяців тому

Yeah you’re absolutely bang on mate I couldn’t agree more, I actually did mention chassis extension if you do a dual cab but I cut it out while editing because I don’t really dig that idea either you’d end up with a turning circle of a 79 🤣

Yeah I run a UFI 200 (top end 11mm) and an 18g. It’s broken 2 cranks and sent a rod out the block at 35psi within 10,000km but it’s the same pump and turbo now just with some shims back in and boost at about 22psi, gone 37,000km now no hiccups, so you could keep the same gear and just dial it back with some shims, I wouldn’t be going a 16g though personally. 100% I (and I'm sure others) want to see more stuff like this because a lot of us don't have mates close by to chat to about 4bies and/or we aren't that proficient in understanding the more technical side of things so this is really useful. 4b videos are a dime a dozen on UA-cam (not saying yours aren't enjoyable).
So I think people including myself are genuinely interested in hearing your thoughts on what works for you, what you don't like and what could be improved etc and just general 4b chat.

    Great Q & A Timmy!
I am 70% through a cab extension into an extra cab of a 78 1 tonner Kingwood, sitting on a short extended GU rail, so it was good to here your retrospective on your build. Saw an original Holden Kingswood Overlander when I was 13 (I am 52 now) & I always loved the look of them.
I regretted putting off this project for most of my life, though the build & the plan now to me, is way better than what I could of ever conceived @ 13.
In Victoria (so far -I am hoping the laws might change here before the end of this build), my engineer won't sign off on 35inch wheels. So I am guessing the 37s with bead locks on your GQ were not a big deal with engineering in Tasmania?
Seems like I should seek asylum down south :0), the home of the original 1st Overlanders it turns out, Launceston.
I was curious about you comment that you would never do a Barra or LS swap in a 4wd, beyond the extra work & cost what is the detail on your position on that? I got the impression that they are both solid motors?
My daily drive is a 1981 4wd Hilux with a 253 v8 couple with an R150 Toyota 5 speed & my only grip is the clutch kit could of been more refined.
The 253 is a rather heavy clunker on that front end, something lighter in it like the Lexus V8 or even an LS 1 I think would work well but the 253 has run well in it. I have done 1.9+ million kms (if you can believe it!) in it, just swiping it out for a low km one I had stored this week.
I only bought this Hilux because it was a little different with the v8 in it & as a run around while I am building the Kingswood 4wd & when I started to wheel it I was surprised how well it went off road. It ain't a great drive on road but I have fallen in love with it, it is so much fun.
It of course does not compare to your trusty Steed but I don't think I will be able to part with it now.

      @timmyhasheart  5 місяців тому +1

It’s funny I was actually talking about those kingswood overlanders yesterday, someone snapped me a photo of one with an old chev looking well body.
As for LS/Barra, it’s just not my idea of a 4wd/wheeling.. I’m just interested in reliable old diesels personally, I just don’t get the hype, if I was gonna do a turbo petrol it would be a TB. 👊🏻

When I started the project in 2019 I did a bit of a deep dive into the history of them both original & ones with a variety of different chassis.
I thought it was curious many I approached including the family of the guy that 1st built them, did not think so & did not appreciate my making contact.
@ one point the guy was in discussions with Ford (As you probably know they did an XY version -perhaps even less of them around than the Overlanders). There was also talk to build them for the Army.
I kind of thought it was a shame, that it could of been further developed & refined & really could of opened up a lot of opportunities.
The vehicle builder who is helping me with my project did come across an original one that was in pretty poor condition as many of them are.
Coupled with some of the chasing I did on them, we discovered the chassis modification work on them was rather rough & primitive.
@ 1st we started transplanting all the suspension hardware from a coiled wagon GU & grafting it to the HZ rail.
I did not realize @ the time the engineer was dodgy & I might not of ever achieved a respectable GVM.
The original Overlanders had the same GVM as the stock 2 wheel drive Kingswoods. I thought that was pointless, I wanted it to be practical & capable.
So that put $16,500 in the toilet & binned a perfectly good GU & HZ rail. I was guttered & guilty.
I am on the 4th engineer, well 5th, the 4th handballed me to the 5th who he employs.
I did buy an LS to be built up as an LS2. I did not know much about them & I guess I started from the point that it seemed like an appropriate or respectful upgrade in keeping with the whole Chev DNA.
I am not one for hype either & I have come across some wankers with such engine swaps who are all show & small penis noise. I would hope that I am not perceived that way.
It just seemed they were a solid motor & I have really only ever owned the old non fuel injected cast iron engines, so I really did not know much about either the LS or suitable diesel options.
I want something reliable & practical for touring & real off road adventures. & it seemed on my limited knowledge the LS was suited to that.
I was also concerned what a diesel would cost me & decided I wanted to spend proportionally more of my budget on the body, chassis @ suspension.
I am wanting to go to places that I know will not have petrol so that might be something I will have to think about.
Perhaps the mistake I made is I should of gone & got an old diesel to drive so I could get to know the differences. Thinking about it now I am going to do that @ some point.
Maybe down the track I might realize I want to take the LS out & put in a diesel. I did see someone put a diesel in a stock Kingswood once.

Hey mate they’re still 4.11. Much like a Cummins the TD has a really low torque range & so people generally go to a 3.5 with Cummins, so I’ve never understood people going to 4.3 and 4.6 for a TD42, in my eyes they’re petrol ratios. 4.11 and 37 is dead set bang on for the road imo, I’m at like 2000rpm in 5th on the highway, torque range is 1600-2400.
Then I just have 63% reduction in the TCase.
