Thanks for the video. I played in this game in 79 and had a great game. I am #8 for UCLA, Brian Baggott, and would love to see more of this game if you have any. Thanks for the walk down memory lane.
thanks for putting this up, i never knew they played each other in 79'. Thanks for also showing ucla highlights, not strictly osu highlights. I am a college football fan, I love to see classic games with both teams highlights in a game. It's also crazy to hear how young Keith Jackson sounds. Nice comeback by the Buckeyes
You should've seen Schlicter (Miami Trace) vs. Gary Williams (Wilmington) in basketball in high school. Eldon Miller and Bob Huggins came into the locker room after Wilmington won at home and declared, "There were two athletes out there who could play for basketball for us..." Williams holds state FG% records to this day, and Schlicter took Trace to the State Final Four where future Chicago Bull Paxson outscored Schlicter 25-23 in a semifinal win for Kettering Alter, who eventually won the State.
@TL250Rider I remember as a kid back then when USC and UCLA would play, both teams would wear their home unis. Even on a Black and White TV, it was easy to tell which team was which. It was great to see both teams get back to this a couple of years ago.
@redletter2008 What a surprise to get a response, thx. You may have meant the Coliseum aerial view, I meant the babe waving the pommies ; ) Unusual that game was there, but found the actual Rose Bowl stadium construction history to see when the Bruins finally made it their home. I recall that was another season the Bucks lost a NC in the Rose Bowl to the Trojans {; ( Just as tough was UCLA visiting CBus a couple years later for victory. Seems like Bruce had a 9-3 string going until ...
That was Terry Donahue's worst Bruin team, at least as far as their final record went. I'm a Washington Husky fan and 1979 was the ONLY time a Don ("The Dawgfather") James-led Husky team beat the Bruins by more than about a touchdown (I believe the final score between the two teams that year was 34 - 14 and the game was in L.A.). But the Bruins got a bit of "revenge" for that loss by giving star Husky running back Joe Steele a bad knee injury (one that very well may have cost him a pro career).
@franknblunt Yeah, the gal was a nice sight. This is one of those "then" somewhat regular seasons when UCLA football was successful & capable of beating a team of OSU's caliber. How things have changed! UCLA has been in the gutter the better part of 12 years (since '98) while OSU & USC have beefed up their glorious histories with many great teams, Heismans, NCs over the last decade. SC & OSU - great football programs, fine schools, great bands, fans & traditions.
@BillyBong05 Starting with the 1982 season, UCLA played home games at the Rose Bowl. With the Raiders moving from Oakland to LA that year, the Bruins felt the Coliseum was just too crowded (they were right). That and the fact that UCLA had always felt the Coliseum was more USC's home than theirs', with the stadium literally across the street from the SC campus and the Trojans having been there since the stadium opened in 1923. The move helped both schools further forge their own identities.
As my dad says about penalizing teams for celebrating , if you're 20 years old and not get excited about a great play or touchdown something is wrong with you. I can't stand the robotization of sports.
@redletter2008 Thx. tOSU & UCLA nearly paralleled another during those decades. Great coaches as UCLA followed up Vermeil with Donahue while Hayes was followed by Bruce. Few coaches with success like that group. Even UCLA dashed the Bucks NC in 1975-6, that one still cuts deep. Bruins could be one of the most successful during the 80s, quite a string of bowl wins & consistent winning seasons through the mid 90s. UCLA won a few Rose Bowls that would take the Bucks nearly twice as long to achieve.
@franknblunt At 4:00, the ariel view shows just how far the field used to be from the seats in the Coliseum back then. That and just how few fans turned out to watch UCLA football (things haven't changed much 32 years later as UCLA is incapable of coming close to filling the place without help from 40,000 USC fans). Embarrassing. A few weeks later, SC would embarrass the Bruins further with a whipping the that the Trojans would not equal again until 2001 & '02 & '03 & '05 & '07 & '08 & '09.....
It wasn't just his gambling. He took money from people who trusted him to invest in and stole it. Somewhere he went awry and turned out to be real dirt ball. But he could play QB. What a shame.
UCLA sucked in 1979. The Bruins finished with only 3 or 4 wins in 1979 and got PLASTERED by the Trojans in their season finale. UCLA was the ONLY Pac-10 team that had a winning record against Washington while Don James was the Huskies' head coach and yet in 1979 the Huskies CRUSHED the Bruins, IN L.A. - the ONLY time that the Huskies beat the Bruins by more than about 7 points the ENTIRE TIME that Don James coached the Huskies (1975 - 92).
@franknblunt UCLA is in the midst of yet another mediocre-to-awful season. Rick Neuheisel is likely to join a growing list of fired Bruin HCs since Donahue left in '95. I can still vividly recall the taunts of UCLA fans at the Coliseum in '97, proclaiming SC as "Yesterday U" & insisting they were now the national power that would be winning NTs, Heismans, etc. Then the tables turned, big-time! SC has dominated UCLA like OSU now dominates UM. And it was Yesterday U that returned to prominence.
Guess you would rather have players calling on their cell phones after a touchdown. No that is whats ruined sports is the individual celebration after big plays. Act like you have been there before. It kills me you see a guy make a great tackle after the running back had gained 6 yards and hes dancing....its sickening.
Can you be more reactionary to my comment. Yes making cell phone calls is pretty ignorant and dumb, however Im talking about pure and genuine excitement. Well enjoy football without face masks and on black and white reels.
There is no problem celebrating after a touchdown but come on. This is a team sport and all these guys are doing is hey look at me. No I'm not old enough to watch a game on black and white but I am old enough to remember when you went college for an education and if lucky enough let the university pay for your tuition to play sports. Half these players dont deserve to be taking a scholarship away from someone that really wants an education. Get a minor league, leave college to scholars.
Thanks for the video. I played in this game in 79 and had a great game. I am #8 for UCLA, Brian Baggott, and would love to see more of this game if you have any. Thanks for the walk down memory lane.
Mike Guess with the interception at the end. That's my brother!!!!
Denise Guess awesome! Go Bucks!
Wow; lucky::; ❤ucla fight song
Gary Williams great OSU WR he is my uncle and still has records at OSU
Wow;;; played for woody Hayes & earl bruce

I didn't remember that -- interesting.
I too miss those spontaneous celebrations. All in the spirit.
Gorgeous eye candy 4:35.
I liked those narrative call-outs. Nice touch.
I remember this game like it was yesterday!! Thank you for posting.

My cousin Jon David Lafferty played on that team. #84 He backed up #25 Rover back on defense, plus special teams.

Say what you want about Art--he was a good QB.
❤ art schlichter as quarterback at Ohio state:; it sad woody Hayes didn't coach the 1979/1980 rosebowl team;, his football players on the team

Great College Football Matchup here
Good ol' Rick Bayshore.

It's surprising to see how few OSU fans were there. Nowadays, OSU fans would definitely travel to an away game in SoCal
The Coliseum? I thought UCLA played at the Rose Bowl and USC played at the Coliseum?
You guys are in decent shape with Jim Mora, Jr. as head football coach. CERTAINLY he's better than "Slick Rick" was!!
Boy, was Art Schlichter a great QB or what? Had all the tools, but couldn't stay away from the racetrack.
It wasn't just his gambling. He took money from people who trusted him to invest in and stole it. Somewhere he went awry and turned out to be real dirt ball. But he could play QB. What a shame.
Fourth pick in the '82 draft.
Back in the day they split time at the Coliseum.
UCLA seemed to have it won, but Schlichter stole one from them. That was a sign of things to come in his life.
When did UCLA start playing their home-games at the Rose Bowl?
Thought usc & ucla share rosebowl stadiums ;;;;;in the old days
Where's the UCLA vs ohiostate 1980 footage
Did UCLA come to Columbus the next year and beat Ohio St, 17-0, if memory serves?
Yes. Irv Eatman was awesome that game playing defensive tackle.
And that was an OSU team ranked No. 1 and with almost everybody back from this team.
Then why did Oregon lose to the Bucks?
Too bad Art Schlichter was such a Fuck Up, you can tell he was a stone cold athlete, quick feet, good speed and a strong arm

Way to beat a lower-tier Pac 10 team in a half-filled stadium. The Sun Bowl has a better atmosphere.
BigBlueBri . . . and then go undefeated and lose by one point in the Rose Bowl to a USC team the Bucks should’ve beaten!
