Bittersweet to watch McKnight. That said, OSU went from January 1974 to December 2017 before they finally beat USC. Odd that USC has fallen to the general lack of defense malaise that has turned the once proud Pac12 into a marshmellow soft conference.
So sad you’re gone. Just read the story, remember hearing about this. Hope you’re still running up above and one day be with your family again! Rest now
I remember watching Joe McKnight play for John Curtis in High School. He played almost every skill position for them. Our high school actually went on the road and beat John Curtis, but then we lost in the rematch for the state title in the Super Dome.
USC has been good from 2002-2009, they beat many big time teams in non conference match ups, teams hated playing USC, and besides 2011 since Kiffin took over and NCAA infractions, they have been rebuilding, having depth issues, having injuries, its been hard for SC to come back, hell for any team that goes through what SC has and is going through for that matter.
I was at that game with my best friend. We sat behind Stanford May's. He was so cool he was so proud of his son Taylor. He told us he hoped Taylor would of left as a junior
Was at this game with my best friend. We sat 5 rows up from USC’s sideline. Will never forget seeing all the stars they had on their sideline. So cool. Even tho the suckeyes got beat it was a fun game and the atmosphere was amazing.
Let's give credit to Ohio State for fighting hard this game compared to the previous year. Time was a huge factor. One of the closest out of conference games against a Pete Carroll USC team. He was something like 26-1 after his first season against OOC opponents. As a die-hard USC fan, two teams battled valiantly.
MauricXe No way, this was one of Barkley's best drives of his career. His passes were all spot on after the sack and the penalty at the beginning of the drive
MauricXe Except he didn't just throw short. He threw short twice, intermediate once, and long twice. There's also nothing wrong with throwing short. If you've ever watched Peyton Manning play most of this throws are short and then he takes the long ball occasionally when it's there. Usually after he's caught the defense off guard with a lot of running plays and short passes/screens. What makes him great is that he's able to identify mismatches in coverage and in schemes that allows him to get the ball out quickly to his receivers. So his offense is always getting positive yards before the defense has a chance to sack him. Playing QB isn't about how many deep passes you make, it's about effectively and consistently driving the ball down the field. Whether that's throwing the ball short or audibling to a run play. It's more about picking the plays that are guaranteed to work based on the coverage you're seeing and Matt Barkley did a pretty good job of that on this drive. It wasn't the most exceptional passing performance, but he picked up crucial 3rd and 4th downs and made zero risky plays that could've given the ball back to the defense (which nearly every QB does at some point in any game).
DPMixing None of his completed passes were difficult to make (for a QB at that level). Joe Mcknight was the real hero. Those long runs, and that great (short) reception and run to save the drive early on.
It's not always about the passes, it's often more about the decision-making. It's about knowing when to take what's given to you. Also the pass at 2:05 was a GREAT and difficult throw perfectly placed between two defenders 20 yards downfield. I agree with you Joe Mcknight is the clear MVP of this game, but Barkley did play a significant part in this drive. For a true freshman QB in one of the most hostile environments in college football in a highly pressure-packed situation you really couldn't ask much more of him. So many QBs in that situation try to force the big play and end up turning the ball over, even in the NFL. As a true freshman in just his 2nd college game, he did a great job avoiding that and made some great decisions, even though much, but not all, of the drive was shorter throws.
dude, I'm an Alabama fan, and just because their conference isn't as good as the SEC doesn't mean you should insult them! The Big Ten has Ohio State(who beat Oregon), Penn State(which i recall beating LSU), Iowa(who beat Georgia Tech), and Wisconsin(who beat Miami). Both conferences are doing fine. Maybe not as good as the SEC yet, but credit goes to both of them even if competition is weak at times.
Took the ncaa 5yrs to find that an agent had given bush’s family benefits, the school had nothing to do with it , what auburn did with scam was worse , it’s all about hate for SC.
This was the last great win of the Carroll era and one of the last nationally significant wins that USC has had, period. They had a road win over a Top 5 Oregon and beat a Top 5 Stanford but those were both in conference in the years since and that's about it.
Tressell was sooooo conservative this game. They gave it away to USC. No blitzing on this drive, besides the corner blitz that resulted in a sack. And the missed opportunities in the red zone. Great game, though.
McKnight was absolutely fantastic!!!! RIP sir. What a player!!! So sad that some loser with road rage took this young man's life. I have an autograph of McKnight (not a usc fan at all) that I'll simply hold onto. Look how damn quick that kid was. Pure talent.
Just another great win over OSU. You OSU people need to refer to this game because USC always defeats OSU. Wish USC could play OSU every year so there would be another W in the win column.
You might want to do some research before opening your mouth. Back in I think 1968 or 69, Ohio State played OJ Simpsons USC and completely destroyed them. So saying USC beats Ohio State every time is a lie.
+jim johnston chill bro he's just saying how the times have changed. Recently both teams were in the CFP, when 5 years prior they weren't all hyped like they are now. That's all he's saying.
As a Buckeye fan this is was one of the more painful games to watch. Joe McKnight was a stud. Great game USC. I wish we could have beat Pete Carroll once.
Looks like there's 50 jelouse Ohio State fans that watched this video. All I can say to you sore losers........FIGHT ON!!!!✌️✌️✌️ A REAL football fan would have respect for such a incredible serious considering it was done with a freshman QB that played that last serious like a 5th year Sr, cool, calm and collective!!! RIP Joe and Fight On FOREVER!!!✌️
Seeing as USC is still trying to get back to the depth they used to have and with Bama dominating college football, I knew the game would end up one sided lol SC just needs stability at coach and depth put back on the team and they will be back in the Top 10 soon. Remember when Alabama was hit with Sanctions in the early 2000's for repeated recruiting violations and it took em a while to build back up to national contenders.
Was at a bar in Chicago for a bachelor party. Was at the Ohio State Bar across street from Wrigley for 1st half but had to leave because some SC friends in the party got a little too mouthy. Even though Carroll was still there, this team was the sign that the SC era was over. Way softer.
This team would’ve stomped the gators in the national championship. Weaker? Was not the case. Pete wasn’t trying to coach this program going into sanctions
I’m a huge usc fan and their MO is to severely underachieve and then overachieve or vice versa. They can never just have a stable steady season. Knock off eventual 11-2 Ohio State, drop a game to a 5-7 Washington team. It’s must be the sun.

DPMixing
None of his completed passes were difficult to make (for a QB at that level).
He was such a great Trojan, sucks he and the rest of the guys had to play with half a team for there careers because of Paul Dee's hard-on for USC
Great plays made by USC...but too much credit is given to Barkley.
The unsung heroes in this one are Joe Mcknight and the offensive line from USC.
Too much Credit??? What game were you watching???
Now ttat USC is in the Big 10, we get to see this every year.
dude, I'm an Alabama fan, and just because their conference isn't as good as the SEC doesn't mean you should insult them!
A great reminder of how physical Pete Carroll's teams were, on both sides of the ball. I miss those days!
Dude he was a known cheater...but I totally agree at both nfl and college
@@jameycockrell5481 cheated how?
Took the ncaa 5yrs to find that an agent had given bush’s family benefits, the school had nothing to do with it , what auburn did with scam was worse , it’s all about hate for SC.
@Dees Nuts At worst he turned a blind eye to learning that a player was being paid by someone who wanted to be his agent.
Kirk herbstreet and Ohio state still punching the air to this day
RIP Joe McKnight
This was the last great win of the Carroll era and one of the last nationally significant wins that USC has had, period. They had a road win over a Top 5 Oregon and beat a Top 5 Stanford but those were both in conference in the years since and that's about it.
walterlv01 And now they are top 10 and going to the Rose Bowl...They can't keep USC down, no matter how hard they try.
USC won the rose bowl three years ago
Tressell was sooooo conservative this game. They gave it away to USC. No blitzing on this drive, besides the corner blitz that resulted in a sack. And the missed opportunities in the red zone. Great game, though.
BYU and Cal both ranked in the top ten, big blast from the past there.
Those days are LONG gone. WE will welcome you the the Big 10 soon enough, hope you're ready.
They aren’t
RIP Joe, fight on forever
McKnight was absolutely fantastic!!!! RIP sir. What a player!!! So sad that some loser with road rage took this young man's life. I have an autograph of McKnight (not a usc fan at all) that I'll simply hold onto. Look how damn quick that kid was. Pure talent.
We might get this game now every year 😍
Great game! Hard to believe Joe is gone! So sorry for that!
This was a rebuild year for usc if I'm not mistaken.
I don’t understand how this was so long ago. I’m 23, and this feels like last night.
I was at this game! Tomorrow I'm going the USC/U-Dub game in Seattle. Fight On!
rip Joe mcknight
USC plays anybody anywhere
This was the final glimpse of the Pete Carroll era and all its dominance.
You mean "and all its cheating"
@@squigglyline2813 A wannabee agent wants Reggie to LEAVE a year early for the draft....and some how that's USC cheating? LoL.
Just another great win over OSU. You OSU people need to refer to this game because USC always defeats OSU. Wish USC could play OSU every year so there would be another W in the win column.
✌
You might want to do some research before opening your mouth. Back in I think 1968 or 69, Ohio State played OJ Simpsons USC and completely destroyed them. So saying USC beats Ohio State every time is a lie.
+Aaron Blackstone you think or is that what wikipedia said?
+Aaron Blackstone But the 1972 USC TROJANS the greatest football team of all time beat the holy shit out of them. wasn't even a game
+Aaron Blackstone USC owns Ohio St haven't lost to them since 74 rose bowl.
beat them in 75 80 85 rose bowl
91 92 season I think
and the 08 09 season
the legend that could never beat stanford
And so the legend of Matt Barkley is born...
we own them!!!! fight on!!
I remember this game. Classic
lane kiffin should watch this video...USC needs to play like this again!
Hey Ohio State call USC when you have more than 10 National Tittles xD
Funny seeing all scores rolling by and see Oregon & Florida State not ranked.
+jim johnston chill bro he's just saying how the times have changed. Recently both teams were in the CFP, when 5 years prior they weren't all hyped like they are now. That's all he's saying.
What's funny is seeing Kansas at #24. Missouri #25 & BYU #9!!
And now it’d feel weord seeing FSU ranked.. College Football has changed a lot
It was an impressive drive in front of a loud crowd.. just glad Buckeyes finall got their revenge, we’ll see more Big Games in the Big Ten!
Running the ball. I remember those days at USC. If you can't run the ball...you ain't winning football games...
kind of curious how USCs opener against Alabama is going to go. Fight on!
38-35 Trojans! Fight On!
yikes
Seeing as USC is still trying to get back to the depth they used to have and with Bama dominating college football, I knew the game would end up one sided lol SC just needs stability at coach and depth put back on the team and they will be back in the Top 10 soon. Remember when Alabama was hit with Sanctions in the early 2000's for repeated recruiting violations and it took em a while to build back up to national contenders.
and would ya look at us now :]
xShiftyyy have fun in the rose bowl :)
Who knew this would one day be a conference rivalry?
The Drive!! SC fighton!!!
Great drive. USC was very overrated at this point in the season, but still an impressive drive, especially McKnight.
How in the world did Ohio State lose to that USC team? SC has had some great squads, but that year wasn't one of them.
Soon to be the JT Daniels true freshman show! FIGHT ON!
ha, osu is the greatest team of all time and has the greatest history and by far the best school
Never realized how key Mcknight was on this drive RIP
Too bad SEC teams won’t schedule road games like this. 🤣
USC&UCLA will join The BIG 10 and see Ohio State on a daily basis
"...on a daily basis!" What...in checkers??? 🤣😂🤣😂🤣
Back to back home and home wins for SC ✌🏽
Great memories. Fight On!!!
Columbus has always seem to be a very intimidating place to win in.
I remember as a kid not understanding (later in this season) how Osu lost to this bad usc team
I’m a huge usc fan and their MO is to severely underachieve and then overachieve or vice versa. They can never just have a stable steady season.
Knock off eventual 11-2 Ohio State, drop a game to a 5-7 Washington team. It’s must be the sun.
