RIP Vinny. I grew up in Southern California and Vin calling Dodger games was my youth and adulthood. We was also a great play-by-play football announcer for CBS in the late 70's and early 80's. I'll miss you Vin.
When you hear this broadcast, the spare use of words Scully is famous for comes through very well indeed. This is probably his most famous radio call not working a baseball game.
And just like he did after Gibson hit the impossible home run to beat the Oakland A's in '88, he lets the moment happen, says nothing so that the viewer can focus on the excitement of the crowd
The part of the story that gets glossed over is that this play did NOT end the game. After this amazing play, the 49ers were in danger of losing as the Cowboys were moving back down the field very quickly with big chunks of yardage...only needing a field goal to win it. Even though I know the outcome, it still makes me nervous to watch... Niners...return to glory in 2018!
I'm no 49ers fan However.. Three things make this clip instantly memorable for me 1. the catch with the title game on the line, 2. Vin Scully legendary words and 3. The sharp looking dude in the white suit.
I was at that game 30 years ago. unbelieveable. Joe Montana was best man at my sister's wedding. after the game I ran on the field and tried to pickup Fred dean. it was crazy. joe Montana best ever!

Every time we got in the playoff's Dallas Beat us. this day " The Catch" was unreal. The Stadium went crazy. And the 49ers went on in the 1980's becoming the team of the decade. If you compare Quarter Backs to Joe Montana, there is no equal. that includes Tom Brady. Joe was the best. what a special time back then. " Montana to Rice".
+Joshua Lozano you can disagree all you want. even the experts call Montana the best. Montana has four titles. eli manning? are you kidding? a lot of quarterbacks better than him. Montana was the best of all time.

I was 13 and fell in love with the Niners during this season/game. My late Father was a die hard Cowboys fan. So many awesome memories of he and I giving each other a hard time over each others team. Priceless memories.
Amazing!!! Even by today's standards (perhaps even more so). Great avoidance of the defense's leap by Montana. And how happy everyone in the stadium is! Hugging and high-fiving and patting backs and cheering 'till there was no tomorrow. Great fans (and great fashion). And what a great team celebration by the 49ers. Truly a team, to the very letter.
If I could go back in time and watch any football game in the history of football I would watch this one. I would take my Grandpa back with me as he is the reason my blood bleeds red and gold!!!
I wish I was old enough to appreciate the 80's niners (born in 85). I remember the 95 super bowl when they destroyed the charger's and I thought it was gonna be like that forever. Now look at them. thanks Jed.
And I was there! In the end zone where The Catch was made. I can't express the feeling of elation that enveloped everyone in that stadium that day. It was the start of what became known as "the decade of dominance" to the 49er Faithful. Those were the days!
I was at the game. joe montana is in my family. it was unbelieveable. the crowd went crazy. never so much joy. the niners went on to be team of the eighties. they were unstoppable like the roman empire. like a machine back then.
coming from a life long cowboys fan, who watched them in the 70's, Montana was probably the greatest, because he was so cool under pressure in huge games like this. Staubach was a great leader and intense competitor when they were behind, Elway was a gutsy and athletic field general in the final moments, but Montana was so accurate, uncanny, and cool headed. Brady isn't too far behind him. Funny how nobody mentions the great Terry Bradshaw, though. His team's always put the close games out of reach, in the fourth quarter, not needing a comeback in the final moments
Thanks KNC. Pre-1983 is a bit before my time. Which is why I remember Mr. Scully from those days on NBC. As I watched pitch by pitch the games he called On Saturday afternoons, plus the 1986 and 1988 World Series. The only time I remember Keith Jackson calling baseball was when he was assigned to do the 1986 NLCS for ABC. I had no idea Mr. Jackson had been the primary announcer for ABC baseball coverage before Michaels.
Vin Scully called NFL games on CBS from 1975-81. His broadcast partners were the likes of Sonny Jurgensen, Alex Hawkins, Paul Hornug, George Allen and Hank Stram. Scully called the 1975, 1977, and 1981 NFC title games.
If it wasn't for Eric Wright and his horse collar tackle on Drew Person on the first play after the kick return we would have never heard about the catch!
They even had a jingle for the 49ers. The only part I remember was, "Thank God for the sod squad...". That was an El Nino year and Northern California got pummeled with rain. It is fun to sit and watch old football and baseball games from the Bay Area during the 70s and 80s.
This was Vin's LAST football game he ever called. Flying home afterward, he thought, how am I ever going to top this? I can't. And he quit football. Too bad, because the only thing he never called was a Super Bowl. The greatest ever. Jack Buck was second.
He was actually up for the job -- CBS had basically held an open casting call earlier in the season to figure out whether to pair Scully or Pat Summerall, with Summerall winning the audition and the right to call the subsequent Super Bowl with Madden. (The NFC championshio was Scully's consolation prize.) Chastened, Scully ended his 30-year association with CBS in the offseason, taking NBC up on its offer to be its lead announcer on the baseball Game of the Week.
The best thing about VIn Scully is he knew when to shut up. When something great happened he let the event speak for itself. He did it for Aaron's 715th, Gibson's HR and here as well.
Vin Scully is one of my favorte NFL play by play man of all time he was excellent in football like he is in baseball to I wish he could of done some Super Bowls at CBS
CBS allowed Vin Scully to call the NFC Championship Game as a consolation prize and perhaps as a way of persuading him to stay at CBS. By 1981, CBS was dead set on making John Madden their number one NFL color commentator. They just needed to figure out the right broadcast partner. So that year became an audition between Vin Scully and Pat Summerall. In the weeks that Summerall was away covering the US Open tennis tournament, Scully worked with Madden. And then when Scully had to go call the World Series for CBS Radio, Summerall worked with Madden. Ultimately, CBS figured that the laconic Summerall gelled better with the bombastic, lively Madden than the elegant, poetic Scully. Although Vin Scully has publicly said that he stopped calling football games after this because he figured that a game like that was the perfect way to end his NFL broadcasting career on. The truth of the matter is that Scully felt that his intelligence was being insulted (read Terry O'Neil's book "The Game Behind the Game" for more details). As soon as his contract with CBS was up, he took NBC's offer to be their lead play-by-play man for Major League Baseball and the rest is history. It should be noted that Pat Summerall actually did call the 1981-82 NFL Championship Game, albeit on CBS Radio alongside Jack Buck. www.nytimes.com/2016/05/24/sports/baseball/vin-scully-nfl-pat-summerall-john-madden.html ftw.usatoday.com/2016/05/vin-scully-john-madden-nfl-cbs-pat-summerall awfulannouncing.com/2016/did-you-know-vin-scully-almost-became-john-maddens-partner-at-cbs.html articles.latimes.com/1989-06-02/sports/sp-1115_1_peter-lund-nbc-sports-pat-summerall www.fearsomefootball.com/1232/vin-scully-and-what-might-have-been/ www.myajc.com/sports/the-day-vin-scully-didn-land-that-nfl-broadcasting-job/jIZHAG0u2SQcj5WYGVi9xJ/
My favorite fan shot is the Dallas Cowboy fan in the white jacket. The anguish, right in front of her. Always wondered how much she paid for that ticket.
1:56 Love the diversity of the 49ers faithful… one man who was heading to the disco in The City after the game and another who put some work in on his Petaluma dairy farm that morning!
This was Vin's last game as a network NFL announcer. Reportedly he wasn't happy that Pat Summerall was named CBS' lead NFL announcer and declined to sign a new contract. When he signed with NBC to be their lead baseball announcer the next year, he was offered to join NBC's NFL broadcast team (behind Dick Enberg), but declined.
Had Scully did chosen to call the NFL on NBC at the time at best he would have been # 2 play by play behind Enberg. Marv Albert replced Don Criqui in 1983 as # 2 play by play and paired with John Brodie. Although Albert did not do any college football bowl games which NBC had at the time, I don't think he would have called a bowl game ( likely the Orange Bowl) because NBC had the rights at the time to the Rose, Orange and the Fiesta Bowls. As part of the deal NBC allowed Criqui to retain his Orange Bowl credit. At CBS , Scully never did any of their Bowl games mainly the Sun or Peach Bowl ( Lindsey Nelson was always penciled in for the Cotton Bowl which CBS had at the time as NBC had the Rose which Enberg was the staple as # 1 took over as Curt Gowdy left NBC three years earlier). Both Summerall and Scully were great play by play announcers. I would have loved to have heard Scully call a Super Bowl. One thing I would have also loved to see was and I doubt at the time it would have happened was because Summerall was an ex player and after his playing days became an analyst but eventually moved to play by play if CBS in somewhat fairness would have had both Scully and Summerall call Super Bowl XVI with Scully doing play by play and Summerall the analyst and give Madden a huge role with Musburger on the NFL Today. That would have been great to see but Summerall at that time had earned his merits at CBS as did Scully who at that time had been edtablished as a legendary announcer.

Damn right, just let the moment sizzle so the people enjoying the game at home can smell & hear the excitement.
Hearing Vin Scully back in his football days - priceless.... Reliving this and seeing Dallas go down the tubes - pricelesser.
Goodbye Candlestick.... You hosted some of the best miracles the 49ers had pulled off.
