I appreciate your honesty and openness. I'm terrified to mod my things. I really struggle with anxiety around things I don't understand and one of my biggest problems learning things on electronics is that instructions don't care to tell you what's actually happening. What I mean by that is they may say copy this and move it to here and change this then re-save and move it back. And other people seem to be ok to just like follow the instructions and do it. But for me... It sends me into a swirling spiral of what even are computers and how does electricity function and who figured this out in the first place and WHY are these the steps and WHAT even am I doing? But for tech people who do it all the time, they're just like "it doesn't matter, it works, it's easy". But everyone's experience is different and we learn differently and at different rates. Idk why sometimes people can be gatekeepy when people enter the game or conversation late. If we break down the things that make it scary, more of us can have fun together ☺️
    Anyway, nice video!

Thank you so much for making this video man. There are lots of games I've lost over the years, and hearing that the eshop was closing sent me into a panic. I would love to get back all of those games I'm missing, but I just don't have the money to spend on something like that. When I heard everyone was modding their 3ds systems I was instantly hooked, as well as terrified. My 3DS is one of the few things I have left from my childhood and losing it would be devastating. I'll hopefully be going off to college soon, and I would love to take it with me to ensure I keep the kid in me alive. I've never modded or hacked anything, so all of this is really scary. Nonetheless I'm still gonna give it a shot. I'll be sure to give an update after I've worked everything out. I got a new battery for my 3ds 2 months ago after it was collecting dust for years. While it was cool to get my childhood videogame system up and running again I knew still wasnt going to play it much anyway. I decided to yolo it and try to mod the thing and give it some new life. It was nerve-wracking since I basically grew up with it and I didn't want to ruin it but it was a really good decision in the end. Even though I won't play through all of the games I downloaded just because I couldn't have them as a kid, I've been playing through a few and honestly I think that its nicer than letting it go straight back into a box to collect once again.
And putting custom themes and custom homebrew apps and stuff is just kinda fun on its own once you get past the stage of being nervous about it. Using it at all its better than forgetting about it again.

I am definitely NOT a tech nerd, but the 3DS guide is so simple, I had no trouble following it as the methods have changed over the years.
I bought a JP N3DS LL off of eBay since US models are stupidly expensive right now. I do have a couple of US N3DS XLs that I bought and modded some time ago, but one of them had the ABXY buttons all but completely stop working unless I press down really hard and the other one had the right speaker stop working. So I decided to start fresh.
The 3DS guide helped me to get that JP 3DS hacked and then region-changed to NA since JP 3DSs don't have an option to change languages like other regions do for some inexplicable reason. It also showed me how to back up the original NAND before the region-change just in case something goes horribly wrong.
As for Homebrew, the hShop is just a small part of all the things you can get into. The hShop does have a large selection of GBA games that you can put on your 3DS, and the best part is that your 3DS will run them natively since every 3DS has GBA hardware inside of it.
One Homebrew I recommend is the Universal Updater as it is a 1-stop-shop for nearly all 3DS, DSi, and NDS Homebrew. This also allows you to download updates for any homebrew you may have, if there are any updates to be found. Two VERY useful homebrews can be downloaded from Universal Updater:
    1. Twilight Menu ++. This homebrew allows you to run DS games on your 3DS from your SD Card. It also works with DSiWare as well. This homebrew app mode runs in DSi mode.
    2. FTPD. This homebrew allows you to transfer files wirelessly between it and an FTP Client on your computer, such as FileZilla. Transfer speeds are not the fastest, but it is still faster than taking off the back plate of your N3DS XL to get your SD Card out, doing that whole thing on the computer, and then putting the SD Card back into your system and putting your back plate back on again.
There are still many more homebrews out there which can allow you to give your 3DS a bit more personality, or even to just have fun with.

I bought an extra 3DS a few months ago, modded it and it’s amazing! I always laugh and cringe inside when people post how they’ve spent $100,$200, even $500 on 3DS and Wii-U essentials… like spend your money elsewhere. I don’t like to pirate games but I’ve got most of the main Zelda, Pokémon and Mario games physically anyway. And to that end, the original developers don’t get any extra money on used physical games sales sooo….

When you said you have kids and work , uff that hit hard . I also had to wait until 11 pm and speed run the hacking .
The possibilities : you can not only download games , dlc, or bugs repair, you can also play games from the Gba, PlayStation , Sega , you can change the background of your 3ds .
The only sad thing about this is that the supply of 3ds will drop hard and I can imagine in 10 years getting a 3ds will cost you half a month worth of pay.
I recommend everyone to also buy this lost of things you need to have for the next 20 years :
    Screen protectors
1-2 batteries to replace in 5-10 years
    a pack of 3ds touch sticks .
    A protector for your 3ds
A joystick protector, they break easy
And last but not least , another 3ds .

Thank you for not trying to explain how to do it! A PSA is really all that you can do with the modding guide constantly changing. I’ll say this, right now is the easiest time to mod your 3DS before the shop closes. After the closure you may lose the chance to do this mod unless you already have a couple things installed. An internet connection is required for some parts of the mod, and a PC/Mac that can read SD cards and then that’s it.

Liked the video, I agree that the guide you referenced is easily the best method to mod your 3ds.
As far as the SD card goes, you’re right that you’ll have to take it in and out a bunch for the initial set up, but after that you can just leave that sucker in. Which was honestly a deal breaker for me.
Use the hshop for as much as you can, and for all the other things, once you get the initial custom firmware on your DS, just set up an FTP program. I didn’t even know what that was before I hacked the 3ds, but I downloaded one program on the 3ds itself and FileInstaller on my pc, and now I can move any file I need to back and forth without taking out the sd card. And if you have a New 3ds XL, you ain’t gonna wanna take that sd card out repeatedly after the initial set up. Seriously, just use FTP. It just opens up your 3DS as another file window and you can drag and drop files as you need to it. Of. Of course you gotta be slightly patient for transfer speeds for larger files, but I would much rather wait a couple minutes than I would remove the backplate over and over.
Keep up the good content my friend 🤙

Mine seems to still hold up well and doesn't have that vinegary smell (or damage) on the screen. I misquoted when I mentioned that screens melt in storage (and these are just old iBooks for reference), but it's actually a chemical(?) breakdown in the screen to where it turns lumpy and has a vinegary smell. Not sure how this would happen for other portable screens but of course they're also built different.

Nope, no bootlegs on HShop. The Homebrew and Hacks section is where that stuff is, but the games list is maintained very well. I continue to be impressed.

Luma and HShop are pretty much the only things you need to do a basic hack of the 3ds. I'm fortunate for the modding/hacking community.

I modded my new3dsxl so I could randomize my Zelda game.
Now I'm just lost in how to have more fun with it. It's a daunting task to keep fiddling with the SD card back and forth for a tiny little tweak.
Also, I was giggling like mad when I modded my 3ds. "What if it breaks? What am I even doing?! How can this work?"

I have 2 3DSes, I got the original for Christmas 2011 and the New XL for my birthday in 2017. I modded my old 3DS a little while after getting my new one, but reset it at some point for god knows what reason. Finally last week I decided to mod it again, followed a guide on how to do it which included updating the 3DS. No luck... had a google and found out Nintendo released a random update HOURS before I tried modding it. Worst luck ever!! Now I can't mod it for god knows how long... 😭

Yes I’m sorry - Nintendo is being stupid there. Gotta say it. Fortunately I had several modded beforehand and I DID find out that if you’ve modded recently the new update from Nintendo should not affect those mods.

I'm curious about all the dlc for each game? Anyone know? Like smt/persona all the maps, etcetera. How about all the updates like Pokémon, Mario Kart 7, is it all available/up to date? Able to play online with other players?

Yeah so I believe HShop has all that covered. They have all the archived DLC and updates. I’ve had no problems downloading and playing games.
