    Not gonna lie, this explanation makes a lot of sense. They're portraying characters to promote their business, and obviously, they're not going to put on the voices the entire time. And yeah, Charles Martinet's Mario voice is best used in short bursts, not something you'd want to sit through 90 minutes of.

      Those short bursts were Charles Martinent not chris pratt and I been saying that before the movie came out. But no one believed me. I guess that was done for the parts that Chris couldnt do and also remind the audience of the original mario ALONGSIDE with the cameo of Charles Martinet of jumpman aka guisepee and also Marios dad but marios dad being a regularly talking charles and jumpman being the original mario still.

      @@chazzywaz Okay but Mickey, Donald and Goofy are also known for their voices, and they COULD get annoying if they were only "I LOVE YOU FRIENDS, HO-HA", [angry duck noises], and "GAWRSH"... But they're not JUST that. These are just the catchphrases/things they say that you think of first, but any movie portraying one or more of them gets their voice to simmer down WHILE STILL BEING RECOGNIZABLE when a longer dialogue is needed.
      Mario is all WAHOOS and IT'S A ME because that's all the GAMES need, but that doesn't mean his voice would have to be that ALL movie long. I'm totally sure that Charles Martinet could have done a performance that's both recognizably Mario AND YET perfectly sustainable and not annoying for the whole movie.

  • @johnnobon
    @johnnobon Рік тому +8

    It works just fine for full dialogue and I actually think they sounded very charming. They could have had Charles probably tone down the accent and sound a little more full dialogue friendly, but what they did do works

    Unfortunately haven't watched the movie in English since I'm from Italy and it was available only in Italian (looking forward to rewatch it in English and also Japanese at least as soon as the DVDs come out) but yeah, when they revealed Chris Pratt was voicing Mario and especially after hearing him in trailers I knew he was a good choice exactly because of what you mentioned in this video (like I said, can't wait to hear his and everyone else's voices throughout the full movie when I have the chance)!

    I still never under the argument that the voice would be to annoying when we have multiple Mickey mouse films, and a minions movie. People really overestimated how "annoying" Mario's voice would be in a 2 hour film. Like if this was a genuine argument don't you think most people would start turning voices off in games like Mario Odyssey or would just mute their T.Vs? Hell wouldn't Nintendo at this point just replace the Mario VA??? Plus why are you even going to go into a Mario movie just to complain about the voice he's had for years? I do like that they have an in movie explanation but the argument for them not using Charles being that the voice would be to annoying is just dumb imo

      Interestingly, Martinet plays M & L’s father in the movie and the voice he used there would’ve been very well suited to Mario in the film. I guess they wanted someone younger? Or more likely, someone with more ⭐️ Star Power ⭐️

    You say "90 minutes of cartoon voices would get annoying really fast". But Mickey Mouse movies and the Goofy Movie exist. Martinet spoke as Mario for hours in the early Mario PC games and trade shows, that's how Mario's game voice was originally designed.

    • @DaveLeeDownUnder
      @DaveLeeDownUnder  Рік тому +2

      I did not sau "90 minutes of cartoon voices" would be annoying. I said 90 minutes of the overly-cartoony MARIO voice would. There HAVE been Mickey and Goofy movies, but their dialog is ALWAYS kept to a minimum, and they are almost always relegated to cameos or small bit-parts. Movies and educational video games are VASTLY different - surely you can understand this. I very much doubt anyone stuck around at the trade show interactive thing for more than 10-15 minutes.

    • @Luxembourgish
      @Luxembourgish Рік тому

      @@DaveLeeDownUnder In a Goofy Movie, Goofy talks a lot as he shares the role of main character with his son. He's able to talk seriously during emotional scenes (look up Goofy Movie Hot Tub scene on UA-cam) as its a story about mid-life parenting and teenage angst with serious moments. Professional voice actors like Goofy's and Mario's can extend their range so its the same cartoon voice, but serious or sad tones when needed.

    • @DaveLeeDownUnder
      @DaveLeeDownUnder  Рік тому

      To be fair... Goofy doesn't even have that much of a heightened cartoon voice. It's pretty normal, except for a few little alliterations. 90 minutes of Mario - one of the most heightened cartoon voices around would be annoying. So would 90 minutes of Mickey Mouse - exactly why Disney has basically never done it in nearly 100 years.
      I don't need to "look up" Goofy Movie. I'm well acquainted with it. I saw it in the theatre on first release, grew up with it, and own it.

    Think about it for a second, this doesn't EXPLAIN anything at all. It just flips the thing on its head and tries to shoehorn a justification for the video game voices in the story of the movie. I find it way worse than just going with a different voice without "explanation". It's more like "the video games were just an act, this was always the real voice".
