My own theory is that the song we play at the end of the game IS the signal emitted by the Eye of the Universe, and that this is the breadcrumb trail left for the next universe's inhabitants to follow, so that one of them may become a quantum-entangled observer capable of helping shape the next universe and emit the next signal. And every time the Eye's signal is sent, it is the song of a different species, or several different species. This is why the eye's signal precedes the birth of the universe itself.
Perhaps it was even always this way. In a reality like that of Outer Wilds, where causality can be waived by certain means... life can be its own creator. The Eye exists outside of time, after all.

    • @derek96720
      @derek96720 3 роки тому +67

I agree with this. We also see universes being born and extinguished while in the eye. It's very likely that because you are outside time when you play your song in the eye, your song stretches across the entire lifespan of your own universe. And also keep in mind that the game heavily emphasizes the idea of effects happening BEFORE causes.

I have always considered the song to be a basis for the next universe. The observer chooses what they want the future universe to function like. In our Hearthian's case: It is through a campfire song. When you see the ending picture, it shows suns in the center of planets with almost a wispy smoke connecting them all, while aliens roast marshmallows on a campfire(if you find solanum)

I think a big theme of this game is the inevitability of death in the universe. The Nomai weren't killed by their own technology going too far, they were killed by a wandering comet that seems to have just happened to pass by, and just happened to carry a new matter they've never seen before, which wiped out all life in the solar system. They met such an abrupt end that it was painful to watch. Almost like the supernova that wipes out the Hearthians. Even if the Nomai never existed in their solar system, the Hearthians just had really poor timing, and you, the main character, finally fulfilling your dream of becoming an astronaut, get obliterated by the sun's natural death just minutes later.

I finished this game about an hour ago, and pretty late into the game it dawned on me that the absolute first thing you do every time a loop starts is to establish a quantum state. At first I didn't think anything of it and dismissed it as a 'press X to pay respects' moment, but it actually carries meaning. Prior to you opening your eyes, the game's universe is literarily not there. It only starts to exist once you press X.
Similarly, the Nomai refer to the entity as the Eye of the Universe. Every now and then, a reference to eyes is made in the game, as in the Nomai's third eye and it being able to observe things differently (as we learn from the records at the Sun Station). Also, they wonder what the Hearthlings' fourth eye does. Expanding on that, what is the purpose of the Eye of the Universe?
In any case, just my thoughts. Great video, probably the best at explaining these aspects of Outer Wilds, great job!

When a conscious observer enters the eye, a universe of possibilities collapse to a single point.

  • @andrewmallon6515
    @andrewmallon6515 3 роки тому +107

    Ok so here’s my interpretation:
The eye is responsible for all the strange properties of the quantum moon, meaning that it causes the moon to change in appearance depending on the planet it orbits.
Continuing on that, would it not be reasonable to assume that the eye itself has similar properties? Could those final scenes be caused by the fact that you are in the eye? They all take place in places that are similar to your homeworld, maybe that’s because you are there and the eye is shaping itself around you.
You bring the people you met into the eye, to play a song that encapsulates the universe, one for each planet, the 5 hearthians, and then solanum for the rest, the nomai plays for the unknown. By gathering those 6 people, you gather the entire universe. Then, as they converge, each one coming together when you ask them to play, the universe itself becomes a quantum object.
So what would happen if an observer were to enter the eye, if an observer were to observe the entire universe of possibilities, forcing them into a single point?
Well the universe in a single point, a singularity? Those are the conditions required for a Big Bang aren’t they?
    The beginning of a universe.
By entering they eye, you are able to see the universe, observe it, and make it anew.

    • @BoxCox

      Very interesting idea.
The only thing i would argue is that Solana was born in the solar system so she doesn't really know much about anything outside of it. She is pretty simular to the Hetharians in that regard.
Her existence in the mind of a player influences the liferoms in the future universe but the basic structure is either embedded in the eye itself or in the player's existence.

  • @Chocomunchie

While I like where you went with this video, I still think you sold the ending a bit short in some respects. The campfire scene with all the characters wasn’t _just_ a stageplay farewell sequence for fun. In my opinion, it was also consistent in the question Solanum - and by extension, the player - asks after understanding the quantum elements of the Eye: what would happen if a conscious observer went into the Eye of the Universe? My interpretation was that our subconscious would become the “conscious”, and that’s why we see projections of our friends around the familiar. Our subconscious observations surfaced and became physically present, whether they were really there or not. It wasn’t just a random contrived goodbye, it was cleverly consistent with the game’s enigmatic nature of quantum mechanics.
As for your assumption that “what we do know is that the Eye needs a conscious observer to create life”, I don’t think that is something we “know” nor was it the point. I think the overall point of that ending was, all things are finite, and this would’ve happened with or without us. The universe is indifferent, and the chaos in it happens even if we don’t see it. Our character was lucky enough to get to see its final stages transpire despite that, and was able to finish discovering what the Nomai started. What the ending revealed was that the game was about the inevitability of death, and the acceptance that all things eventually come to an end, but that doesn’t necessarily mean new beginnings can’t come out from the ashes.
Nevertheless, however we individually interpret it, this game is one hell of an emotional ride, and everyone needs to play it at least once. It’s more than a game, it’s an experience.

    • @LuisMartinez-sv1md

I think without our character entering the eye the next universe wouldn’t have been created, Solanum says that there is a certain amount of uncertainty in the universe, which is why things that are quantum are quantum, there place isn’t certain, when we look at a quantum object solanum says that it is brought to a single possibility, which is why they stay in place when we look at them, that is there certain location at the moment, the eye is quantum, and by entering it we make it conform to a single possibility, and that possibility is the new universe, that’s why the eye is older than the universe itself, because the eye is responsible for making the universe, it’s an endless loop of the universe ending and then a conscious observer entering and creating a new universe with the eye, making it always older than the universe

  • @byronkfbi

I tend to think of the eye as sentient. It called to the Nomai causing them to set up the apparatus needed to get the later hearthian to the eye. They had a different plan and appear to have failed, but they really got the ball rolling for the next reboot of the universe. The fate of the hearthian's appears tragic, but they are in the right place at the right time. All according to plan.
    Loved the game.

First off, I am sorry for your loss. I don’t normally write comments but this one hit home. I just wanted to say that the point I took from the game is, the meaning of the universe is life. And the power of that life to create more life. You are the meaning of your mothers universe. And you should be very proud of that, and try not to dwell at the inevitability of “the end”. Focus on your “meaning of the universe” which might be your children one day. God bless you.

  • @dord9

One interpretation that I have about the ending is that because the solar system you explore is functioning in a quantum way, it could very well be the case that we are inside the singularity before the Big Bang, and the explosion at the end is the universe finally coming into existence. Might be completely off, but it's just one thought I had.

I think the campfire scene was really very important. The Nomai wrote about the eye being “malleable” and I think our character really paves the way for the new universe by influencing the eye with their experiences, in the form of the final song.
We can see how we influence the new universe in the nomai woman. Whether you meet her or not changes the new species.
I do think the friends were just a manifestation of main character’s subconsciousness but that doesn’t make them any less important.

Wow this game is such an art piece. Its a very beautiful experience. There is so much to interpret and pull from. Perhaps what we interpret is somewhat a reflection of ourselves just as much as a imparted message from the creators of the game. It feels like the game is centered around life on a grand scale within the human perception. What is existence if there is no one to experience it? what is the universe without a sentience to appreciate itself? I think these questions are pondered. All of a sudden, just by being an observer of existence, we breath a whole new dimension of life into the universe. The game asks what does it mean to be quantumly entangled and an observer, and I think it showed that in the context presented that means there are infinite possibilities, infinite universe bursting into life, and exploding into death like flash of fireworks. In many ways the game seems bleak and yet so hopeful. We are doomed to die and fail in what may be a cold unfeeling universe, but we breath life into existence, and we are not in it alone. Although we may have a limited time being a piece of the universe experiencing its self, it is bursting with endless potential and value which in simply observing can we breath life. It seems as though even when one life, or species, or solar system , or even universe meets its end... there seems to be room for another and another story yet to be told.

Oh 100% the eye was sentient. There were too many visual scenes at the end. Between being shown the altered observatory, walking around the glade, singing with friends, etc., the eye wanted to show you that. It needed to be observed by another sentient being to create the new universe. Hence the call went out.

Simple and clear explanation. I do think there's a bit more meat here and there, and definitely a lot more that is purposefully left to interpretation, but at a surface level this is a great summary of the ending.
I'm still trying to work out what the signal itself was, especially since they mention that it was "older than the universe", so it must've been something from a previous universe? Was the previous universe the same one? Is it on a loop? Is it a like a torch being passed on to the next person on every iteration?

    • @zeni0nero0man

the signal would be the door to the ancient glade imo, since what the nomai detected was the anomalous energy surrounding the planet, the little symbol they have for the eye of the universe is actually the signal they got i think

Like all quantum objects in the game they are at all points until observed, the eye is the same. The universe is in all possible variation until you observe it and create the new universe, depending on what you experienced depends on who you are and so you observe the universe differently

  • @CaptainWobbs

I imagine the Eye’s role is to tie the universe into a continual loop. It’s as old as time itself, and lived through both the last universe’s destruction and the current one’s creation: it stands to reason that it’s responsible for the creation of every new cycle, not just this one.
I also personally believe it’s not only sentient, but omnipotent. It otherwise feels just TOO convenient that everything falls into place, the Nomai set up just enough resources for the player to find the Eye moments before the universe dies. Remember that it stopped transmitting, which is the whole reason the Ash Twin project started and the statues were created. Without that, the Hearthian would’ve just died on the first cycle without a way to travel back in time. It doesn’t make sense for all these things to happen so perfectly without someone- or something- orchestrating it.
On a mostly unrelated but equally interesting note, Solanum doesn’t show up if you never met her. She also thanks the Hearthian for remembering her. This leads me to believe that all the characters showing up at the end is more proof that the Eye is aware; it hand-selected these people specifically because of their connection to the player. The other option is that these people show up because this is just in the player’s imagination, but I really don’t think that’s the case.

    • @juanmarodriguez6010

The Ash Twin project starts because of the sun explosion, it is what powers up the whole project and why the nomai couldn´t activate it earlier

One thing: I'm fairly certain that the points of light and the one we interact with at the top of the museum in the ending, 13:30, are GALAXIES, not UNIVERSES.
The distinction is important since in the observatory section of the museum, you can see written notes detailing that the "stars" shown in the accompanying pictures are actually galaxies, with hundreds of billions of stars of their own, and that they are all moving away from us (the observer).
If they were universes, why would every universe be dying simultaneously? It is likely that universes with different laws of physics or different starting points or times may "die" at completely different times than "ours."
Plus, there's actually been no outright mention of a true multiverse in Outer Wilds, only the prospect of a cyclical universe that creates the conditions for it to be created.

Great video! There was one thing that I caught as I am watching that you got wrong, at 13:20 you are talking about the part of the game where you witness the heat death of the universe, in the video you say the last stars are going supernova, what actually is happening is those are the last "white dwarf stars" or "neutron stars" dying out, t this point in the universe all regular stars are long gone and the only thing left is black holes and these white dwarf stars which are essentially mini black holes that are very different from normal stars and they do not go supernova.

    • @samhalcyon6741
      @samhalcyon6741  3 роки тому

Thanks so much for watching my video and for your thought provoking comment. While I think you may be correct in saying that near the end of the Heat Death of the universe, all that would be left would be the core remnants of stars that had gone supernova such as neutron stars and white dwarfs, in this game the stars are most definitely going supernova. As you rightly said, neutron stars and white dwarfs are too small to go supernova so perhaps the time period is not as close to the end as you're suggesting, or perhaps it was an oversight on behalf of the developers. Sometimes scientific accuracy can get in the way of good story-telling :)

I believe that the eye does call out a sentient. This is because it can only exist once an observer reaches it, per quantum laws. If there was no observer by the time the universe collapses, how would the Eye then create a new universe. It needs an observer. So every cycle it must call out for an intelligent species

  • @johncounts5640

Everything on the quantum physics realm fits into what I found, except I never got the multiverse impression. It was my impression that the eye of the universe was the location where the Big Bang of this universe begins, and is also the epicenter of all quantum physics. What I got from this was that once the eye is observed, it causes all of reality and the universe to collapse into a singularity. Then the power of the quantum eye drew from the memories of the observer to decide the method by which the Big Bang is caused, and the ultimate result of that event.

I like the idea that the eye requires a conscious observer to create. If there are infinite possibilities, than there are infinite scenarios in which conscious observers made it to the eye as well as ones were no one did. Though if it exists in a quantum state, would that make it impossible for a conscious observer to fail to make it? It would have to be a universe wherein life never existed to start with. Though that in and of itself may also prove impossible…hmm

    • @MrIndiemusic101

The game seems to evoke a lot ideas from biocentrism theory of Robert Lanza . I'm a bit of a layment with this sort of stuff but If I recall and understand it correctly, the idea is life and consciousness are fundamental to the universe, rather than being byproducts of it. He proposes that biology, not physics, is the central driving force in the cosmos, and that our perception of space and time arises from our consciousness. Essentially it's life and consciousness that creates the observable universe not the other way around.

Though technically it could still be both of the process is still technically quantum entanglement...

You talked about "nothing is faster then the speed of light". well, universe expansion is faster. if not, there should be light outside of the universe or multiverse.
we are also accelerating. or rather, everything in the universe is still accelerating. how do we know? we have measured the distances between stars. After awhile you will be able, with some measurement tools and simple math, to calculate the distance the star should travel from one and another in "X" time. The problem was that we noticed we were wrong. Why? Because the distance between the stars were far greater then we calculated. were our calculations wrong? no. the idea that a "bang" happened and "mass" came into existence from this phenomena we call "big bang" from a singularity point can for sure be right. But if you throw a stone into the air it will eventually reach a "top speed". it doesn't matter if you throw it on earth, in space, in total vacuum, upwards, downwards, left, right, south, north or what not. At some point it will reach a top speed. So the same should apply to any "mass" or atom, planet, star, galaxy that are in existence. What is so ***God*** damn lovely about the universe is that its not. The distance between stars, galaxies, planets are increasing and still do. Even though the universe is so old that stars are srsrly starting too collapse, not to glow anymore, to implode, to become a Super Novas. So where is everything accelerating too or towards? We are moving towards what is named "The Great Attractor". And what is that? No Clue. for sure the greatest Troll that is/are/will be is the "joker", "trixster" "God", "Nature", "The Eye", "the will", "The Dao" or what you want too call "it". and everyone else we call a "troll" is but a mere wannabe shadow of the True Trixster. Either that OR we move backwards in TIME. So we are not really accelerating. It's decreasing. We just observe, feel and live in it the other way around. Backwards if you will. So we are not from the singularity point in big bang. we are moving towards it in a decreased speed and will (as we know) end up at and in a singularity point knowned as "big bang". With this theory we can explain the big bang, the acceleration of the mass in the universe (that is proven) and alot of everything. My conclusion? we are full blowned retards that doesnt even understand the proper way to behave in "life" so "life" is trying to help us by showing the "last pages in the book". Yet we didnt understand..So now its showing us, the observers of the universe, the entire "movie" backwards. Or.. Life is the best practical joke and God is the biggest troll ever. And I fakkking love it! Ignorance is bliss and we are the proof of that :) Best Regards Tronkan

I had no idea that the idea originally came from philosophical musings. I'm still not quite sure I fully understand it from a philosophical perspective.
