I'm single and i still bought a dual cab 79. Better resale is pretty important plus i have removed the rear seats and store my swag, stretcher, clothes, food etc where the rear seats used to be. I also have a full sized canopy but also remember the cab is a much more dust free environment than even a good quality canopy. You can't beat automotive seals. PLUS the space in the cab is a heated and air conditioned space! Unlike a canopy. You can store your food in the rear and control the temperature with the climate control, especially in this hot country! Storing food in a metal canopy isn't ideal. Weight overhang doesn't worry a 79 series too much as long as you're smart with your weight options. I optioned the alloy tray and canopy. Much lighter than steel. Loved this video! Talks about the main dilemma faced when choosing which cab to go for! I love both.
Have taken the rear seats out of the ranger and built a false floor for more room and security with fridge and personal bits. We are only two when travelling. Another fun video. 👍
Extra cab are a great concept especially with the newer style rear suicide doors so the whole side of the ute can be opened as one excellent for camping with a reasonable amount of space to put passengers/ luggage in the back. The tray on my Ranger is only about 400 mm shorter than my old single cab tray giving me the best of both worlds...
Well, the extended cab is still an option out there, right in the middle. Need a family truck? You can use it like that momentarily, they can seat 5 people. But the cab is still short enough for proper weight distribution. Though it's not everyone's cup of tea.
Dead right had a 1994 space cab Rodeo could fit the 3 billy lids in there (no seatbelts though) upgraded to a 2012 BT 50 freestyler cab 2 legit seats with seatbelts not very comfy but suicide doors for easy access but no latches for the grand kids carseats . Looking at upgrading to a current model BT50/Ranger bit more cab space comfier rear seats. These are all cab chassis I would never waste my time with a well body. No tray space I could fit a queen size bed on the tray. 6' wide 6.5' long
Came from a 2016 79 Series SC to a 2019 79 Series DC. The DC wins for me. I like the extra interior space. Throwing stuff on the back seat just works better for me as well. Plus for some reason it's way quieter in the cab than my single cab was.
I've a 79 series (nat asp 1HZ), so a single cab. It's used for work. Having a little extra room behind the seats would be great, something like an extra cab, purely for gear and tools for the job that I don't want to leave in the tray/elements, but also don't require having more than 1 passenger. If I were to upgrade to a new work vehicle, a 79 series duel cab would work but ease of use would be lessened as I'd need racking up top for extra gear and a ladder to get to it due to it's height. So, it really all depends on what you're using it for. My Y2K Cruiser is incredibly reliable for the work I need it to do. It's not a race car but it's also not my last work ute, which was a 2008 3.0 Nisan Pootrol money pit!
Don't listen to the other guy...let me know what colors you want and I'll buy one of each for you - and look after them here in Australia for you :) - Look I even spelt colour wrong for you.
Actually, I just bought a brand new f250 diesel single cab. The price is the same for 4 door, and the resale is higher for us in the states because single cab trucks are very rare.
I didn't have a choice when I bought my 2018 SR5 Hilux because I wanted a manual. For some reason, the extra cab cannot have a manual gearbox. But it's fine. Even for a single person, a dual cab is still good. The back seat is a useful storage space when on a long trip. Even though I have a canopy, anything in the back is likely to get some dust on it. So for clothes and bedding, the back seat is a much better storage option because it is sealed better than the tray/canopy can be.
You talked about seat folding down to sleep, but didn’t talk about seat adjustment, I’m 6’0” and found on the farm the SC79 was ok in and out most of the day, still got a bit stiff after a day though, but on longer trips, done a few 3hr each way drives to the city and compared to the dual cab I couldn’t get the seat adjustment for comfort level to the same degree, for me if I was doing the high day in day out KMs you guys are! just getting to some of those outback routes and then doing the off road segment, Id need dual cab for that alone almost a pity they don’t offer a king cab option, that said the 300mm chassis extension to the DC would sort out the tray balance load carrying issues so that would be a win win imo, the comfort confines of a SC rule out a SC cab as a touring vehicle, weekend warrior vehicle not an issue. Good topic.
If 79 series had a space cab body option from factory that would be a huge benefit, a lot of the comfort I feel comes from the rough factory seats in them, my uncle's single cab Dmax is plenty comfortable I find. It's always hard to find the perfect balance.
Benjamin Prince Yeah true the DMax seats are way better than the std 79 series seats for sure, but even in my DC Hilux which are good std, I still need to readjust on longer trips, prob just my beat up body, I also find comfort vs support is subjective as well, like I can’t wear modern boots or running shoes with that gel shit in them, as the day goes on I feel it more, yet in std non gel boots I can literally run all day and not have neck or back or get leg cramps in them, with seats I find the same thing, but for me why I could never do a single cab, Id def swap seats in a 79 for touring. I have been looking at the Stratos with foldable arm rests, just don’t want soft and sloppy, need firm comfort well shaped and adjustable. Horses for courses if ya truck is ya workshop and you spend all day in it and doing long drives like Overlanding! for me it’s got to be one of the first things to change or setup, what’s the point spending all that money in suspension, rig weight balance for handling and having poor seat position and or support, makes no sense to me, a personal thing I guess.
Benjamin Prince Also have to add, Torben’s new setup is pretty awesome, he’s done what looks an amazing job with his SC 79 and always enjoy his contribution to Ronny’s trips.
@@maverick2242 yeah I hear you there, my hilux seats aren't too bad but given they are 10 years old can get a bit stiff in them, still find the overall set up more comfier than my company work car with brand new seats (2018 VW Caddy), if I had my own 79 stratos seats would probably be one of the first mods I did to it I reckon, and a decent arm rest or higher center console, my old hilux was a space cab, found that was a great compromise, could still fold seat back, enough room for dry storage and plenty of tray room as well.
Both 79's have no room in them And as for the all the Modern Dual cabs (Ranger, Mitsi, Nav) the back row seats are just a joke, unless u r 6 years old and 35kg..... But, like everything, its all a compromise Great Video guys, well presented.... Horses for Courses :)
re tards Rubbish!!!! That is the vehicle I based my comments on.... My son has a 2018 Triton Dual Cab I'm 6'2" and I wear my knees as earings in the back.... It's disgusting! Good for a 5km trip, no more
Being in the US, I picked up a single cab Toyota (Hilux) pickup for a good price. Awesome little truck, but in the long run wanted more space in the cab. So I converted it to a extended cab, good part is I still can carry all my wait over the rear axle. Best of both worlds for me in the long run.
It's a wagon for me. A 3rd Gen. Surf. After owning a SC Hilux and struggling with the tiny cab, a DC wasn't an option because I couldn't fit the surfboards in the back or sleep in there, the 4Runner seemed the go. Also, now with a family of four it works pretty well.
If you can get away with the two seats and want a dedicated touring vehicle the big advantage of a single cab is you can fit a hard shell roof top tent at the back, more or less within the profile of the cab roof. Dual cab you have to have it sticking up another 300-400mm which affects handling and fuel consumption.
i had a dual cab hilux personally not a fan of utes when you have kids to actually put a kids seat in there is such a pain ended up selling it and buy a hdj100 series landcruiser so much better even tho you loose the tray space witch i rarely used
Had a 79 single cab, now have 76 wagon. I miss my single cab. I had a lift off canopy so i could use as tourer or work ute, as for no space in the cab for a nap, my canopy was big enough to keep a mattress in where i could sleep in comfort
Much of this about space and capacity applies more significantly to the trucks you are driving. The rear axle placement on the big 3 US trucks is more aft enabling better weight distribution and capacity. e.g. my Ram 2500 Power Wagon which only comes in dual cab (crew cab) has a 6.5 ft bed in the back and has 1,640 lb payload capacity / 10,960 lb towing capacity.
this is what i was talking about i feel like longer wheelbase, larger payload trucks, and as an extension, extra/space-cabs should have been mentioned and factored into this
Unless you NEED a ute for work or whatever, a wagon wins every time. Having owned 2 x 79 single cabs, and rented a double cab for an overseas expedition, I’m super happy with my current 78 troopy. I loved the 79’s, really, but the flexibility of the troopy setup blows both out of the water. More roof space, more security, more loading space. And I use mine for work and for overlanding/ offroading.
In the days on the Holden sandman panel van, you could hop between and over the seats into the back. I reckon that arrangement in one of the overlanding single cab vehicles would go over well
love the single cab 2-4mt tray, but with extra room in the dual cab and load the back seat with soft cargo and more area on the roof rack the dual is a bonus put some under body tapered tool boxes on the dual cab for extra storage, just cannot part with the single with no DPF
Surprised to see Torbs back in Australia 🤣. Thought he might have just stayed in the States! Kidding aside, glad you guys enjoyed your time in the US and great video guys! ❤️🐞
With payload distribution, we can't forget longer wheelbase pick-up trucks/utes. Can have the best of both worlds, 4 doors, and a payload that has a centred axle under it - only downside is that the longer wheelbase isn't as good for the off-road than the shorter wheelbase is.
I reckon it all comes down to how many seats you need, if you don't need the rear seats then the single cabs are much better suited for carrying a load. My parents have a Dmax space cab - I reckon the space cab/extra cab design is the go for a single cab - got a little bit of extra room in the back to squeeze in a fridge (and good access to them if they have the suicide rear doors). I'm stuck with a wagon due to needing the 3rd row seats, but even if I didn't I still prefer the wagon
Nice video guys. Thank I go for a dual cab. More secure storage, shopping without the worry of the rain, it is also powerful enough for trailer for large load, and the tray is big enough for small load like fridge, washing machine,... dual cab win
Double cab checking in. The only thing I miss is not being able to sleep in the back as easily. Usually I have a shell on the back and sleep inside that, but with a double cab I only have a 65" bed.
usually, when i get a vehicle, i drive it til it dies. i prefer the American extended cab style. i have no kids, and i still had room for lots of stuff, and if need be, i could haul a few people around for a while without them getting too cramped. easily put stuff under the back seat, fold it down to flat for the dog, and still be able to recline for a nap. the wheelbase is not as long as double, and it would maneuver easily, and hauled plenty of weight in the rear. the rear axle always got upgraded asap due to my tendency to drive things hard. i am normally a spartan man, so i dont need many extra pleasures, a good seat, full instrumentation, dual battery conversion on a gas truck, and a small but good sound system. im more into the full range of the music over the volume. i did like the custom overhead storage. being here in the states, and sometimes living in bear and wolf country, i had a lock box in my overhead liner for my pistol, and another under my rear seat for a rifle and shotgun. these had 10 gauge construction and the locks came from a gun safe design i found online. this was in a 99 f250 with a 460 swapped in where a v10 was. i really miss that truck. i used my pto to drive a large pump to clear many basements after a storm of the century hit home.
I’d go a troopy over a dual cab and keep the seats in then don’t have to worry about forever trying to set up the tray and it’s all waterproof, single cab if I had no friends or family haha, I’ve got a 76 and I like how it makes me take less shit
Extra cab the best of both world's. Best for 2 people, but can take 4. Longer tray and better weight distribution than dual cab. Also can keep all your gear inside the cab👌👌
You can get them made. I think its easier to get 80 or 100 series though not as frightening chopping and old wagon. I'm thinking about doing an 80 series Sahara or GXL something with coils all round into an extra cab it would be mint bit of wagon comfort and ute practicality
How about one on dual cab vs wagon, for those with families and dogs... I am selling my single cab, because I need a back seat, and I agonised over dual cab vs wagon before buying a Pajero.
I like the look of my dads 79 single cab so I’m getting a 75 single cab so me and my girl and dog can go 4x4ing but if she wants a kid I’m not selling my Ute 🤣
As a proud father of 4 kids, we travel in 7 seat wagon with trailer. Although as wife gets better with long haul drive, I'd trade in trailer for a space cab. 180 degree opening suicide doors means fridge an a single draw in the cab, full boot space in wagon. Problem is I'm 60k short on buying the Ute........... Trailer for now......
I've owned multiple standard and extended cabs, and a crew cab. With good seats, single cab all the way! With stock seats extended cab so they can be reclined for more variety of driving position on long trips. I found the extra space behind the seats in an extended cab is really difficult to use efficiently for storage and it mostly ends up being wasted space so I'd rather have the longer bed. I'm also where it rains a lot (~80 inches per year) and hanging your wet rain gear inside the cab sucks because the cab becomes a sauna. Use a bit of the extra canopy space you get with a standard cab to stow wet rain gear and your life off road in a truck will be much better. I switched to wheeling an SUV about ten years ago and don't see myself ever going back to a pickup becuase SUVs are so much better balanced and more capable in extreme terrain. The only real downside for me is there's no place 'outside' to hang wet rain gear, but the interior volume is so large that it doesn't steam up too badly.
In the states we have Access cabs as well. Its a half sized seat in the back. Technically it will "allow" for 2 more seats behind the single cab, but don't expect to put anyone there. I have one and love how it allows more interior storage, a spot for the dog, and movement of the front seats. In Austrailialand do access cabs exist?
Ronny, I reckon you’re a top lad mate, but this vid looks to be all about the UA-cam revenue... a filler. I don’t disagree with what was said in the vid, but the content doesn’t seem well thought out, it’s less than even two mates having a beer speaking drunk nonsense! Anyone can do a “this compared to that” vid, but you’re better than that mate! You’re up there with the bigtime content creators, don’t go backwards for the sake of a few dollars.
dual cab all the way, apart from the obvious and that is to cart a family around, in the event of just a couple, you have backseat storage, especial if you remove the back seat. Once removed that area is massive and i have found i can just about carry all i need for a week or 2 long trip in the back seat area and only put stuff in the tray that is big and bulky.
wouldnt the gvm be the same for both vehicles just the tare and payload would differ? also can you do some update vids on your gear that you have had for a while and how its worn l8ike the ensute and the pdm the seats etc.. thanks ronny keep up the good work
I get a single cab so I can't take my family with me. Enough space for me and my dog is all I want. I go traveling to get away from my family.
😂😂😂😂

Super/extra cabs; the best of both worlds 🤙
They should've made a extra cab for the 70 series that would make the single cab irrelevant

I also have a full sized canopy but also remember the cab is a much more dust free environment than even a good quality canopy. You can't beat automotive seals. PLUS the space in the cab is a heated and air conditioned space! Unlike a canopy. Short wheel base wagon vs long wheel base wagon
With payload distribution, we can't forget longer wheelbase pick-up trucks/utes. Can have the best of both worlds, 4 doors, and a payload that has a centred axle under it - only downside is that the longer wheelbase isn't as good for the off-road than the shorter wheelbase is.

I go for a dual cab. More secure storage, shopping without the worry of the rain, it is also powerful enough for trailer for large load, and the tray is big enough for small load like fridge, washing machine,... dual cab win
I prefer the single cab any day 😁
Double cab checking in. The only thing I miss is not being able to sleep in the back as easily. Usually I have a shell on the back and sleep inside that, but with a double cab I only have a 65" bed.
What about the extra cab/space cab
i dont think this channel likes anything but landcruiser utes
Crew cab!
usually, when i get a vehicle, i drive it til it dies. i prefer the American extended cab style. i have no kids, and i still had room for lots of stuff, and if need be, i could haul a few people around for a while without them getting too cramped. easily put stuff under the back seat, fold it down to flat for the dog, and still be able to recline for a nap. the wheelbase is not as long as double, and it would maneuver easily, and hauled plenty of weight in the rear. the rear axle always got upgraded asap due to my tendency to drive things hard. i am normally a spartan man, so i dont need many extra pleasures, a good seat, full instrumentation, dual battery conversion on a gas truck, and a small but good sound system. im more into the full range of the music over the volume. i did like the custom overhead storage. being here in the states, and sometimes living in bear and wolf country, i had a lock box in my overhead liner for my pistol, and another under my rear seat for a rifle and shotgun. these had 10 gauge construction and the locks came from a gun safe design i found online. this was in a 99 f250 with a 460 swapped in where a v10 was. i really miss that truck. i used my pto to drive a large pump to clear many basements after a storm of the century hit home.
I’d go a troopy over a dual cab and keep the seats in then don’t have to worry about forever trying to set up the tray and it’s all waterproof, single cab if I had no friends or family haha, I’ve got a 76 and I like how it makes me take less shit
I’m seriously thinking the 76, no expensive tray and canopy to worry about.
I don't think I am in any danger of ever buying a ute but it was still an interesting video.
Extra cab the best of both world's. Best for 2 people, but can take 4. Longer tray and better weight distribution than dual cab. Also can keep all your gear inside the cab👌👌
Love the versus videos! Keep em coming!
How about cab plus? Pity the LC 79 doesn't have a Cab Plus/Space etc!
You can put a larger tray, but then it'll be as long as a bus.
@@aslkdfjhg And a lot of weight past the rear axle too if it get's loaded up.
You can get them made. I think its easier to get 80 or 100 series though not as frightening chopping and old wagon. I'm thinking about doing an 80 series Sahara or GXL something with coils all round into an extra cab it would be mint bit of wagon comfort and ute practicality
The GVM is the same for both vehicles, you only have to take passengers into account when they are present.
Dual cab for me, it’s good to be able to keep clothes and fridge inside out of the weather and prying eyes while I’m away from the Ute.
Extended cab mid size was my choice and I get a 6' bed. Kids and young adults fit in the rear seat, adults in a pinch.
I remember living out of my dual cab with a family of 4. No Trailer, open tub. was very full
Hahaha Access cab Tacoma checking in! I went for the best of both worlds!
I got a SUPER CAB. Best of both worlds.
Space inside for gear.
Space in the back .
only downside is no rear seats..
Love Isuzu 300 nps 4x4 crew cab truck because carry 6 people and still put 5 ton on tray and tow 4 ton
Can you please do a video on camping in shit rainy weather and how you avoid getting wet
No kids. So much easier. Single or Extra cab! Love my extra cab.
Shorter wheel base, better for Offroad, break over angle, etc.
Troopy for the win.
I like dual cab for daily but prefer single cab for off road fun!
How bout space cab a mix between them
All the extra roof rack on the dual cab is limited in its use, has to be lightweight cargo, or you get top heavy pretty quick !
extended cab = best of both worlds
dual cab all the way, apart from the obvious and that is to cart a family around, in the event of just a couple, you have backseat storage, especial if you remove the back seat. Once removed that area is massive and i have found i can just about carry all i need for a week or 2 long trip in the back seat area and only put stuff in the tray that is big and bulky.
Also for the 70 series I think only the single cab comes with a 5 star ancap safety rating as it has side curtain airbags
The more cab the better. Triple cab wagon / SUV!
wouldnt the gvm be the same for both vehicles just the tare and payload would differ?
also can you do some update vids on your gear that you have had for a while and how its worn l8ike the ensute and the pdm the seats etc.. thanks ronny keep up the good work
You have to account for the passengers too so the dually has 5 peeps and the single on has to account for 2 peeps
I wish they made extra cab cruisers
I have a single cab, but I am thinking of a extra cab because more cab space and more tray place than a dual cab.
Yeah I'm starting to think about a dual cab.
Don't know if I can part with my Chally though.
Dual cab long bed 1 ton true best of both worlds
I’m taking dual cab but I like the single to
Hey Ronny...how about an Iveco duelly?
That's a lot of truck, but I like how you think!
in the states they have sort of a One and a half option. I think the entire reason for having a truck is payload.
dual cab 79 because you can put the seat back further for extra leg room
I'll never buy another single cab truck. The extra space in the crew cab is just too nice.
Hi Ronny I liked this video to help me on my next 4wd, but What about a space cab ute?
Interesting. A pity you did not include the extra or extended cab option.
Or 'bakkie' if you from South Africa.
They were both holding the stick the entire intro
