  • Too expensive, not natural, too hard to follow-these are all common arguments against a vegan diet. Russell Simmons, founder of Def Jam and author of The Happy Vegan, has been a vegan for 17 years, and he has heard them all. In this episode of If Our Bodies Could Talk, Simmons teaches senior editor James Hamblin how he defends the plant-based diet that many love to hate.

    Einstein was a vegetarian towards the end of his life. He wrote, "I have always eaten animal flesh with a somewhat guilty conscience." and also, "So I am living without fats, without meat, without fish, but am feeling quite well this way. It always seems to me that man was not born to be a carnivore."

    If I were to go someone's house and I popped their goldfish in my mouth, they'd throw me out. Yet, this same family will sit down and eat a salmon dinner. If I go to sea world and kill a dolphin and started eating it, I'd be arrested and labeled sick. Yet, eating tuna is fine. So many people in the US love their pets, whether it's a cat or dog. They love their cats more than their own family. A rich widow dies and leave her cat millions of dollars. Puppies! You know you're going to hell if you kill a puppy! You are a sick Demented person if you harm or abuse a puppy! Yet, the same people who demonize you for your horrific evil abuse of that puppy, will go and order VEAL at a restaurant. Why aren't people making the connection? Is it a traditional thing? Eating meat. Like eating turkey? Why DO we eat turkey for thanksgiving! And since when did become a custom to butcher and slaughter another life as a form of celebration? Caviar isn't cheap. Meat isn't cheap. Foie gras isn't cheap. Kobe beef isn't cheap. Spanish prosciutto isn't cheap. Why has meat consumption become a sign of luxury? We've been brainwashed to believe that we need such foods in our lives, When we don't. We really really don't. If consuming animals and animal products are so vital to our health and well being, why are so many of us dying? With heart disease being the lead cause of deaths, and diabetes and cancer. Yet, animals eating other animals don't get sick! Why don't full grown cows drink their mothers milk anymore? Why don't lions drink cows milk? Why don't newborn puppies drink cats milk? Or why don't dogs drink milk anymore when they've fully grown. Yet, for some strange reason, humans still consume dairy milk. The majority of people never give time to think about such questions. We just do what we've been taught since we were children. We sit down to eat without ever really thinking of where our meal comes from. Because we don't want to know. Ignorance is bliss after all. A steak is never just a steak. Pork chops. Veal. These all came from live animals that gave up their lives for our consumption. And unfortunately, there is NO humane way to kill an animal that doesn't want to die. Respect for food is respect for life. For who we are, and what we do.

    • @Rhea390
      @Rhea390 7 років тому +15

      Carter Henderson I've studied this at my university and spoken to three nutritionist about this. Animal protein is acidic in nature and it does decrease our body's pH on consumption.
      You can be healthy and eat everything but you don't need to eat everything, which is what's important here. Also the eat everything and be healthy thing you're talking about is only achieved when animal products make up a small part of your diet, with vegetables and grains making up the bulk.
      I've been vegan for two years and I don't take any supplement other than b12. Vegans don't need supplements other than this one.

    • @Rhea390
      @Rhea390 7 років тому +14

      Carter Henderson I never said it makes your organs acidic. I said it decreases your blood pH on consumption. Your body then uses calcium to bring the pH back to what it was. You're free to do your research.
      B12 is found only in soil and clean water. Animals don't make it. We unfortunately don't live around much clean water. We've over sanitized our water supplies and we scrub our vegetables clean so all the b12 gets destroyed. This isn't the animals fault so they shouldn't have to be killed because of a society we've created.
      Just a little point to be noted, factory farmed and some free range animals live in polluted areas with very low levels of b12 available to them. So they're fed supplements too. Now that isn't very natural either, is it?

      Generally, I'll put my diet of minimal lean meat, tons of bean-based proteins, a wide range of fresh and lightly cooked vegetables, lots of natural fiber, and minimal processed foods against any vegan or non-vegan diet for a.) general health benefits b.) personal sustainability (a diet that isn't sustainable is pointless) c.) cost d.) environmental footprint.

    It is true, that the arguments against veganism hold little weight, if any at all. However, expectation for mankind to suddenly make a rapid switch to veganism shouldn't be high, despite the many examples of change in human morality over time (slavery outlawed, women's and gay rights, etc). For example, the idea to not eat animals for moral reasons has existed for centuries, yet humans still predominantly eat meat. Most humans are individually very reluctant to change life long habits, especially if that habit is one of their greatest loves. Particularly when it comes to men, eating meat is for some, really the most thing that they look forward to in life, and some of these men don't live particularly happy lives. I think that one of the main things that would enable a human to look into - and then move towards - veganism is to be not too bitter about life in general. I mean, if you dislike your job and hate your wife, then you're hardly likely to listen to another human who suggests that you stop eating meat, when you've done it all you're life and it's possibly your number one source of pleasure.
    As for the theory that vegans go out of their way to let everyone know that they're vegan; it's probably mostly inaccurate. The fact is that about 90% of meals that we eat either contain meat, or animal products....a vegan will face social situations on almost a daily basis where they have to admit being vegan. I'm just moving into tentative vegetarianism (which I am far from as I eat fish once a week with my parents; I discussed this stuff with them and this is a compromise for now, plus I feed my dogs meat) and have avoided telling everyone else (except for my housemate and best mate) that I'm not eating meat since a few months ago, but if people who don't eat meat are supposedly always sprouting their moral superiority, then this would be untrue, at least in my case, as almost everyday I could say something (its incredible how much of a passion eating meat is for most humans, like a major passion, and many are not exactly shy about it lol), but I don't; partly because I'm a shrinking violet, but also because I try to understand the life paths that others have come from and where they are at now.
    From what I can tell, it's pretty much impossible to become an 'invisible' vegan. Fortunately for me, I am not particularly social, but I just think that so many people must face moments everyday when they are invited over for a meal with family or friends or possible partners or work colleagues, and then have to say 'something'. In this case, you are in a no win situation as a vegan. If you state very early in your relations that you are vegan, then you are attempting to be morally superior. Whereas if you say nothing until the last minute, then its, "Why didn't you tell me earlier?! I have gone to all of this trouble to cook this chicken stir-fry for you! Now what am I going to serve you? Do you realise how inconvenient this is for me?"
    "I think it was more inconvenient for the chicken." And so it begins.

    1. No, your taste palette doesn't change very quickly. It's a gradual process of understanding the food you eat has a specific affect on your body and your physical processes. Once that understanding's established, you're more likely to change. But meat, doesn't make you 'sluggish'. Quite the contrary, it provides you with essential nutrients that do the exact opposite of sluggish. They energize you, with different sorts of proteins, and fats, and iron, and potassium, and vitamins, and other nutrients our cells, our body requires to run at an effective pace.
    2. True, foods can be inexpensive if you try hard enough.
    3. There are athletes and bodybuilders that eat primarily vegan. But their intake of foods/ supplements vastly outweighs what they'd need if they just had a 32 oz steak and a whey protein shake.
    4. Hah. No it isn't. Industrialization because of population increase; cutting down forests for living property, mining for 'sufficient', fossil energy that sustains that population; and transportation, the release of carbon dioxide at an accelerated rate, are the number one causes of global warming.
    Last one, who cares. Get over it, order a salad. Not a very strong defense on behalf of veganism.

    What Vegans won't tell you is that they must take supplements (like vitamin B12) in order to maintain themselves. Its why a-lot of adolescent vegans look ghoulish, since they are essentially consisting on a third world diet. A sustainable healthy vegan diet, which means eating something other than takeout Chinese for every meal, requires much more than most people can afford. Vegetarianism, on the other hand, suffers from none of these problems, it even follows the same ethical and moral standards. Or maybe there is an equivocation between eating eggs and killing baby chicks, idk, its up to you, but in my mind modern veganism is just another piece of bourgeoisie elitist bullshit, allowing them to perpetuate their self-reinforced right to power over the lower-class.

    How much do you have to hate yourself to give up cheese? Good cheese is made in a way that’s in harmony with nature and has many health benefits because of how easy its protein is for our bodies to use and the structure of its fats, not to mention abundant calcium and bacteria that can reduce plaque in our mouths. This video just made me so sad. :(

      @@johndavidthacker those are either funded by the meat industry, or are influences by/using studies which are funded by the meat industry. In the past for our ancestors meat may have been healthy due to it allowing us to survive when we didn't have many alternatives. But given the amount of hormones, feces, chemicals added to meat, as well as the amount of data we have in today's age, meat is by no means healthy for us anymore if you want to live a healthy, energetic, disease-free life.
