    Thomas Jefferson said “A well informed citizenry is the best defense against tyranny.” We need to discern the difference between truth in the interest of the good and misleading statements that cause harm overall. This can be taught at all levels of education, to spot lies and scams on the internet, TV, newspapers, books, etc.

    • @Sarah-re7cg
      @Sarah-re7cg 7 днів тому +4

      I think we’re only tackling it one way-through education. I think an additional approach to spotting propaganda would be to be more mindful about our reactions to certain material. Propaganda is highly emotional, appealing to the ethos so I think it’s worth examining the psychology and emotional reactions.

    In my 9th grade world history class, we learned that propaganda does not have to mean falsehood. It means that attempt to "propagate" a certain understanding of facts. That understanding may be objective and free of bias or it may be just what most people think propaganda is.

    Immediately you open conflating democracy and capitalism. A country can be democratically socialist. Social democracy, also known as the post war compromise, built the world we know, the world neoliberalism has drained all the life out of. Socialism is the democratizing of the market, so it's immediately MORE democratic than capitalism.
    The corporation is a natural evolution within capitalism. In America, corporate charters were initially issued with strict time limits and only if the aim was in the public interest, like bridging the Mississippi. The way capital as gradually, but incessantly, weakened regulation on itself has led to corporations functioning as accountability shields. We thus ensure normalizing activities beyond the pale, and no lessons learned along the way. Institutionalized, repeated, and protected trauma from business to the community. And we see this reflected in our people.
    Corporations as the first capitalist evolution then fascism and autocracy are the inevitable end game. Inevitable. Monopoly is the natural outcome, a child can understand this. But look at the corporate structure. Rigid hierarchy.
    This is why "government should be run like a business" is a dog whistle to fascists and autocrats. There is nothing democratic about the corporation, it is, itself, an organization built to spread autocracy. The individual business doesn't matter when the system itself results in, not only, autocracy, but plutocracy and oligarchy. Which means the moment they feel their power slip, they'll fund fascism and work to overthrow the democratic process. Autocracy breeds autocracy
    You want to save America? You want to save capitalism? End the corporation. There isn't another capitalist answer, all the other answers are neo-serfdom/neo-fuedalism or socialism.

      True. But no American, of either political stripe, will agree with you. Darwinian capitalism is their religion and corporations are the ordained institutions.
      I've lived in a socialist-based democracy for nearly 40 years. It's messy, there's constant political bickering, higher taxes, less employment mobility but the social safety nets for health and education for EVERYONE are unbeatable.

American's were prohibited from accessing American Military channels in the United States. If you have ever been overseas as military, you'd be familiar with AFN. It's literally a military TV channel for Active Duty military. You were prohibited from accessing channels like AFN in the United States. This removed that restriction. You are spreading disinformation. That's pretty ironic. This allows people access to channels they requested. It doesn't allow the government to make propaganda. If you're ever unsure about a story, check AP News. They are as straight down the middle with fact checking as you can possibly be.

    • @j.vazquez8966
      @j.vazquez8966 5 днів тому

      There are much more subtle ways of engaging in propaganda. The key is finding out what ideology an audience already has (even if they don't know they have it) and use confirmation bias to conflate what they believe with what you believe. "Putin's invasion of Ukraine is wrong (what you already believe) so we must send aid to Ukraine (what they want you to believe)". That isn't to say that those things are wrong, Russia's conduct in Ukraine is probably the second closest thing to 17th century imperialism we have today, but there was no logical connection between that and the support we should send to Ukraine. It didn't tell you what "sending aid to Ukraine" looks like. This means that if someone asked you a question on a general survey, saying "do you think the federal government of the USA should send aid in the form of cluster munitions to Ukraine?" You would probably say yes, even though you may not know what cluster munitions are. This lets our government more easily justify sending military aid instead of seeking peace (in the interest of collecting debt from the Ukrainians later on).

      @@SusCalvin yes, it's obvious but despite that, too often people identify with propaganda, like DEI, above science. and hence why DEI is also often associated with censorship on university campuses.

    Whelp, your definition of what reality TV shows run on-personal tension-explains why I am not interested. On the other hand, the tension between larger groups of people as exists, for example, between incompatible cultures when forced to share the same physical space, is more interesting.
    These are very interesting times in the Untied States of America.

    Also Israel [per Haaretz] places Palestinians in Hamas tunnels dressed as IDF.
    Israel: "Everything we do is because of Hamas and Hamas is the most evil force in the universe."
    Me: "Perhaps you could find your guidance elsewhere."

      My respect for Carlson is lower than the dunces who visited North Korea and described it as a utopia. Those fools believed their dream but Carlson out and out tells he does not believe his own nonsense.
