- We take a look at how the "old timers" packed for an extended camp, for our purposes we use a historical deer camp as the setting and focus. I provide advice given by Horace Kephart as the historical reference and offer some from my personal experience.

I love hammocks! If I could get away with it I would do away with a bed and sleep in hammocks all the time. Enjoy the trip, I am looking to start doing some backpacking trips this spring. It’s been a good while for me.

That camp box brings back so many memories of summer scout camp. My grandpa built me a tray similar to yours and it’s still got many of my youth camp items in it.

Good stuff, Mr. Dyer. Thanks for posting again. One thing I would suggest adding (you asked for thoughts) is a cheap pair of extra glasses. I suspect you already do this...LOL.
Actually I have not, thank you! I carry a repair kit but need to add last year's pair, especially since I am pretty much blind without them.
The text on screen is a distraction and it obscures the box. Otherwise, a good informative video with solid basic information.
Thank you, I sincerely appreciate the input! Without it I cannot improve as readily, it is much better to have some outside perspective than fly blindly and hope it sticks. If no one contributes I am grasping at straws as to what went well and what did not, making my best assessment with the little information I have.

I am humbled by the praise, thank you. But I'm learning just as you are, we're learning different things at the same time and sharing them. I may have a certain advantage conveyed upon me by age. A lot of this stuff is what my Dad and Grandad had in the closet when I was but a pup.
AHA! 'THINKING INSIDE THE BOX'!😊 We took Rubbermaid boxes with our camp equipment. We were 'pre-loaded' to pack more quickly and we used sub-boxes to be better organized. Few things spilled and nothing got broken. It wasn't 'Classic' but it was a modern adaptation of BOTH trays and partitions.
That certainly works and would be quite waterproof!

I used to carry an extra pair of wool socks and chest for mittens and then if my feet got cold I would have extra socks but I carried them specifically just for an extra layer of mittens if my hands got really cold

Do you have a link for a good sharpening stone? I use a ceramic one now and need a historical/real one.
Ebay or facebook market place will be your best friend to find a good historic stone for a good price. I would also search your local antique places, problem is often antique stores want to charge way above retail for a hone thinking they have some rare Godsend. Straightrazorplace.com is a great place to dive into to research natural stones and hones in general but for historic man-made and commercial stones you can quickly find Pike India hones and Lilly White hones on ebay affordably. You can also pick up what are called barber's hones which are fast cutting hones to maintain an already razor sharp edge (roughly 8,000 grit or higher). Once you get into natural hones you can quickly start paying serious cash because there is an entire niche of collectors for them and unless you really know what you are looking for you can get taken. When looking for a hone avoid any that are "dished" out terribly. All used hones you buy should be lapped flat before use. Happy hunting pard'!

I was suprised there was no fuel for the stove, nor; any long johns !
lol, in my defense I wear my long johns and never carry an extra pair and the fuel can is large and carried in a different box (behind me on the right side on the floor holding up the board table, packed alongside a KampKook stove).
Is this box the same thing as a wannigan?
For the purposes of a wannigan I would say it is synonymous. A group would carry other boxes to keep together and safe their cook sets. My cook set box will be in a future video. Wannigans were very carefully made with light weight wood and compactness in mind because of needing to fit in a canoe. Often wannigans would have the cook set, utensils, and plates all in one box. The WWII officer's mess chest has several luxury items like the platter and bowls that would just be extra weight and unnecessary on the canoe portage.
