That buggy fly! Dustin is always on top of his game and I really appreciate his channel. Thank you!
There's a cut out portion where I tried to (unsuccessfully) kill that thing!
That's what I guessed and really cute.@@DustinAbbottTWI
Thank you for this great and detailed review! Seeing other reviewers and sample pics I had doubts about the lens, but it seems like there has been something off with their testing or lens. Your review definitely shows the actual quality very well.
My pleasure!
Just picked up the 10-18mm Sigma. As others have noted it's an APS-C lens but I'm getting very little vignetting at 12mm on my full frame FX3. Excellent video thanks!
That's interesting. Some extra value.
Nala is a beautiful cat.
Yes!
She is that.
I love the 10-18 focal range on my APSC. I really like the videos it provides.
Very useful for sure.
Thanks for an objective review. I have a visit to a European city, which has many old and wonderful buildings, in Dec 23. My widest Fuji lens is 16mm, so I have pre-ordered the Sigma 10-18. Reviews collectively give it a thumbs up, so I hope it arrives in time.
You should really enjoy it for that!
How does this compare to the Sony 11mm f1.8?
i was rly waiting for your review!
Hope you enjoy!
Thanks for a great video. Looking forward to your review of this lens on Fuji XH2.
You and me both!
Great review as usual. I’ve pre-ordered one in the Fuji X mount to pair with either my 30/1.4 or 18-50/2.8 for walkabouts and travel. Nice cat that Nola.
I'm very interested in testing it on my 40MP X-H2. I might be interested as well.
Dustin’s cat, “Nola” (Nala) gets a lot of comments! I think many know, (but some may not!) the famous Nala who is a character in the Disney animated 1994 film, The Lion King and the subsequent enduring franchise. Nala was the lioness that was the primary character, Cymba’s, love interest/girlfriend/wife/companion in the films, musicals, cartoons. Including the cat is a good strategy to help the UA-cam algorithm, (people love cats).
@DustinAbbottTwi The cat is cute, but man is that some kind of, super, fantastic lens!
Nice review, always very thorough and complete. I am also interested in the result on the 40 mp sensor (I have an xt5) and I would like to know your opinion about its antagonist the tamron 11-20. What do you think is the best in terms of image quality? Thank you!
I do plan to explore all of that.
As the owner of a Sony a6400 body, this review was of significant interest to me.
The Sony apsc body was purchased , mint 2nd hand, largely due to its stellar IAF, which I was seeking for very restless adults ( phone camera addicts) and , perhaps, more restless young children. I purchased the excellent Sigma 56 1.4 and a large fan of the Sigma lens line up for Sony apsc bodies.
I also take pictures of landscapes, however, until the release of the Tamron ( perhaps the earlier Tokina which didn't really appeal) the field was rather empty with respect to wide angle zooms, given that I both travel and like landscape type shots. The lack of bells and whistles for video type work was of no concern, given that I take next to no videos.
So it is that this is a very appealing lens. Invariably, when using glass of this focal range, I use aperture priority, and , subject to lighting, generally, just set the lens to 5.6 or so and the rest takes care of itself.
Close up type shots are almost the reverse type of shots that I would purchase a wide angle zoom for, so no downside there.
Dustin, have you alienated your human family subjects and are now reliant on canine subjects, hopefully not !
This appears to be an excellent wide angle zoom , the more so attached to my 6400 for travel.
As usual, many thanks for the review.
This is a great wide angle option, for sure. And no, fortunately my relatives are still very happy to pose for me!
LOL on the comment on Dustin’s cat. He’s putting that cat to work! That cat’s main job is to look cute, so he’s making her earn her dinner. Also, I think he got somebody’s foot in the frame at 10:36 when doing the hand focus transition test.😊(Impressive focus breathing).
hi, Dustin wonderful video in term of quality, focus and sharpness if you have to decided between this sigma lens and the close competitor Tamron 11-20 mm f2.8 , which one you take, I am planning most all the time to make landscape photos, thank you. By the way I love your cat I have one too.
I'm getting a copy of the lens in Fuji X-mount this coming week so that I can directly compare the two.
I have watched a couple of reviews of this lens and am very interested however I think you you need to review the Laowa 8-16mm f/3.5-5 as that is probably the widest zoom in this class although it is a manual focus lens.
I reviewed a similar lens from Laowa before and didn't really enjoy it. I'm going to pass.
That's a great lens, I'm looking forward to seeing Sigma vs Tameron
I don't have that immediately planned, as I don't have either lens on hand.
all of these amazing apsc lenses really are making me re think the heavy weight l lug around in my FF kit.
There are definitely far more appealing lenses on APS-C than there were two years ago.
Thinking of picking up for FF vlogging at 12mm. My FF Tamron 17-28mm isn’t wide enough for me.
Fair enough.
That fly did you dirty bro. But nice job ignoring the bugger XD. nice vid
It wasn't easy!
Nice review, as a Fuji user i'm on the fence for this lens since i'm not that impressed with the 10-24 in relation to it's pricetag. If you get the chance to put it on a 40MP Fuji i would love a comparison to the competitors in terms of sharpness. I think your Sigma performed quite well, but i've also seen reviews where the Sigma was actually somewhat soft compared to the Tamron.
It's definitely my plan to revisit it on Fuji, as that is the only platform where I'm personally shooting APS-C.
What review? I've seen Frost's comparisons and they're almost the same with slight tradeoffs between the two.
@@anonymousl5150 Yes, but his was not on the 40MP sensor point, which makes a big difference.
I tried two copies on my X-T5 and both were quite mediocre in terms of edge sharpness at 10mm, at all apertures from f2.8 to f8. My Laowa 9mm was consistently better than both copies. That's not important for many types of photography, but if you shoot architecture and landscapes it might be noticeable for you.
(My testing was done at longer focal distances, unlike Christopher Frost's test chart shots. I think the lens performs better at closer distances)
Nice. Still haven’t seen any Fujifilm demos with this lens.
I'm working on one right now.
@@DustinAbbottTWI niceeee!! Looking forward to it! 💥
Did anyone test the lens with the ND filter for video? Is it vignetting at the wide end? Thanks!
I would definitely suggest going with as slim of filters as possible.
As you're not planning to compare the Sigma with the Tamron wide angle zoom for APSC, I'd like to ask you if you would recommend one over the other? When I watch both of your testing clips I have the impression that by picture quality the Sigma outrivals the Tamron. But I might be mistaken... There are some other questions though. When shooting in RAW is it necessary for both lenses to have the in camera corrections on? Is the color rendering on the Sigma very much different to a Tamron lens, as I'm using also the Tamron 18-300mm? I'd be glad to get an answer and thank you for in advance!
Some good questions. So yes, I do think the Sigma is slightly sharper than the Tamron. The Tamron's advantage is that it has a more thorough weather sealing, but I would otherwise lean towards the Sigma. I don't think you'll find the color rendering radically different.
@@DustinAbbottTWI thank you very much for your answer and your time. 🙂
Can someone clear my confusion, not having weather sealing on those focus rings, dust can get through and destroy the lens! Thought about getting this for my Himalayan bikepacking trip, but some patches of roads there are really dusty.
The Tamron 11-20mm might be a better choice for you for that reason.
Heyy Dustin adding an a7r3 to my bag along with A73..do u think thia lens can handle the r3 42 mp??
Definitely.
Now that we are going to get a Canon version, I"m very interested. It is what I hoped for from Canon's own line-up, but the RF-S 10-18mm, which I own, just doesn't measure up when paired with my R7.
This should almost certainly be an improvement over the RF-S lens.
You forgot to demonstrate the landscape sharpness this time (or did I pass out briefly?), which I'd consider its primary use case. What was that like?
You may have just missed it. The easiest way to go back and get that info is just to look quickly at the test review.
Full frame shooter here, but I think this lens has a lot going for it. 13:29 No/to manageable distortion between 14-18mm, (most impressive). 10:32 Impressively low focus breathing. Beautifully defined sunstar spikes when stopping down. 2:03 And the diminutive size and weight, (2.8in. X 2.5in.). If they could have fit a clicky aperture ring on this thing while keeping it’s size….Barrel distortion plagues smaller size wide angle lenses but this Sigma, 10-18, DC, DN seems to solve that problem largely on the between 14-18mm focal lens (21-27 mm 35mm equivalent). I’m Thinking this could be a full frame option having better distortion control than many full frame 18mm, 20mm, 24mm, 28mm lenses.
That's fair.
What’s the minimum focusing distance at each focal length between 10 and 18mm?
I didn't test that. I would expect a sliding scale between them.
let me ask you something, wich lest is sharpes and have lest distortion, this one vs the nisi 9mm for real estate? thanks
I would go for this lens.
@@DustinAbbottTWI thankss
Can this lens be used on Full Frame? How is dark circle/vignetting? It seemed like you were using it on a Full Frame camera. I don't use Wide Angle enough to buy the expensive full frame 16-35mm. But if this gives me a usable range I will get it.
It doesn't cover the full frame image circle at all, so I wouldn't recommend it for that purpose. If you want an inexpensive wide angle lens for full frame, consider the Viltrox AF 20mm F2.8. It's impressively sharp and has great autofocus.
I have the Fujifilm 40mp X-T5. I am intrigued with the combination of the Sigma 10-18 and 18-50 f/2.8 lenses for travel. Can you do a review of both lenses on the X-T5 or the X-H2? Much appreciated.
What is there to review, both are basically made for travel purposes
?? Dustin mentioned he was interested in looking at the lens on the 40mp Fujifilm camera. I agree and I'd like to see how the 18-50 performs, as well. From your wording, are you implying that 'travel' photography is not worthy of high expectations and performance? This is my main interest in photography. I take it very serriously. I understand this is not a $1000+ lens, so I accept some compromises given the cost/size/weight. But it is helpful to know how they perform on the 40mp sensor before I spend my hard earned money on them.
@@scottallen6172 My point is you're going to get fine results. I mentioned travel because that's where zooms excel at, has nothing to do with performance but with versatility. The only difference with 40 mp apsc is that you'll hit diffraction earlier and all lenses will look softer at higher aperture numbers.
It's my plan to ask Sigma Canada for a loaner of both lenses and look at them on my 40MP X-H2
To anonymous: Thanks for the clarification and remarks.
My copy is really soft at 18mm f2.8 and lacks contrast is that normal? its a huge jump up at F4 and fixes the issue
I did find that stopping down improved things on the telephoto end. I'm not sure the copy I tested was "really soft", though.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thanks for getting back to
me I returned it just in case! Will grab another from a different store
Great value for the money 😊
Agreed
that bug was killing me with my OCD lol
You and me both!
Thinking about replacing my Fuji 10-24 WR 🤔
I don’t know what to do 🙀
It's a tough choice. How import is getting the faster F2.8 aperture?
Even though I am not using APSC cams at the moment I would love to get this lens...
It's definitely a win for APS-C.
@GoergeSwenton Same here, not an APSC shooter, (I’m full frame), but this is an interesting lens. I am wondering at what focal length one would have to use loose the vignette when fit on a full frame body.
around 1:36 , wasn't sure if that fly was on my screen or in your recording (as I am laying in bed in the dark watching this)
It was incredibly annoying - somehow I had two flies in my office that were buzzing and divebombing me the whole review.
Hey Dustin, it would help me a lot if you give me your opinion to solve this crossword puzzle. I have the Sony 16-55mm f2.8 and the Sigma 16mm, I want to add an ultra wide to my setup. I'm between Sigma 10-18 and Sony 11mm. I am not a vlogger, but I do take video and photos indoors and also outdoors, landscapes and real estate. I care a lot about the image quality, in favor of the Sony there is the aperture and the bokeh, but I am afraid that it is a very specific lens, although having the other lenses it may be a good addition. Maybe the Sigma is a more fun lens, I don't know. Which do you prefer? Thank you.
I would lean towards the 10-18mm. You've already got a wide angle lens with a fast aperture (16mm), so the versatility and quality of the 10-18mm makes it a great pairing with your 16-55mm
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thanks for responding Dustin, I admire your work. I greet you from El Salvador, perhaps you have heard something about my country. God bless you.
Great video. Would you recommend the Sigma 10-18mm, the fuji 10-20mm or the Laowa 9mm for real estate photography? Thank you
None of those, get the new Fuji 8mm, your lines won't be as wonky
@tjkrueger2655 Oh ok!! I wasn't thinking about this one. But yes why not. Thank you!!
That's pretty good advice.
I wish this lens was available earlier, I bought the slower Sony 10-18 F/4, at a much higher price.
That's unfortunate.
Thank you very much for this detailed review. Now I have a problem and I think the only solution is to replace my Samyang 12 mm 2.0 with this lens as an addition to my Sigma 18-50. Thank you for nothing Sigma!
Can you please compare this with the Sony 11mm 1.8? They are so close in price and I'm curious about the minimum focus distance etc between the two
and throw in the sony 15mm f/1.4 for good measure!
great seeing sigma produce a small lens
Exactly.
No dilemma for Fuji shooters. Tamron is more than 200 usd expensive, in Europe it is almost 1000 eur. This is definitely better lens. I am looking forward to finding out results with xh2.
Not sure about that. I own sigma 56mm and Tamron 11-20. Sigma is definitely sharper, but raw images are heavily distorted, it's a prime and Tamron's zoom copes better in that regard.
@@user-fs5yp8mm6x That's because they went for software distortion correction to reduce the size of the lens. There are not many 1.4 primes at 56 mm that are that compact, in fact I can't think of any, while also being that sharp. It's also a fallacy to assume one model behaves like another completely different focal length.
You can use the same logic and say the Tamron is ONLY $200 more expensive, giving you FULL weather sealing and closer focusing at the wide end, while still being only a bit heavier. I have the Tamron and LOVE it, although I am sure I would be just as happy with the Sigma.
@@bigd7696 200 for more weather sealing? Weather sealing is one of the most overrated attributes, you see weather resitant lenses come into shops all the time. Moisture is more dangerous than shooting in the rain. It's not just heavier but longer. 260 vs 335 grams is a big differnce in actual usage. I say get the Tamron if you prefer 20 mm over the 10 mm. Optically they're about the same.
There's definitely more price variation from market to market, and that obviously will influence people's buying decisions.
rigorous review, well done
Thank you. That's my goal
I'd be more encouraged for its IQ on the 40mp if it peaked closer to f8, but who knows
I do hope to explore that. My typical rule of thumb is that lenses peak about two stops down from maximum aperture.
I came for a lens review... stayed for a fly.
Ohhh, those flies. I had to cut out a portion of the video where I tried to kill one that was just driving me crazy!
Regarding 18mm. If one side is sharper than the other this might be a sign of a decentered lens. Mixed samples of this lens across reviews so far. Christopher's Frost review though seems to present a very consistent copy of it.
It's possible.
I almost broke my screen trying to smash that fly
I had to cut out a portion of the video where I was trying to get it.
I am suprised how good the precision is.
As a Sigma male, I really love the Sigma lens.
Nala is adorable
She is that...though she's a brat!
That fly annoys me. 😂
You and me both. There is one edited portion of the video where I lost it and tried to (unsuccessfully) swat it.
Distortion correction is not doing good, it ‘s an issue😂😂
Hmmm, I don't think its that bad - particularly where I showed the in camera correction.
Gee, once again, no Canon mount. No sale, tx Sigma.
That's not on Sigma, that's on Canon.
That wink was so offputting .
Wow. I'm not sure how to respond to that, but that's something that's been a part of my tests like this for years.
"...smallest and widest wide-angle zoom..." "...lightest and most compact..." I don't think so. The Sony 10-20mm is definitely much lighter and smaller.
The Sony is not F2.8. The caveat is that it is the smallest and lightest F2.8 zoom.
there's a Fly 🪰
There was actually two, and they were driving me crazy!
🤣but you've done well pretending they're not there@@DustinAbbottTWI
