Just a pass on for anyone that has a Yoder: The chips jammed up in our auger when we tested them. But - our work around was a mix of chips and pellets in a smoke tube and it works great. They are a perfect size for running in smoke tubes in case you have a pellet cooker that wont feed them thru the auger.
Appreciate you trying so I didn't have to. I was leaning towards tube for the chips, usually run a tube anyway for most cooks. Just wish they had red oak chips this size!
For sure. We were very careful and shut it down the very first time we heard a slight noise from the auger area. We removed all the chips with pellets, inspected everything and will only use pellets in the hopper. We've done about 6, full 8-hour cooks since and no problems. I'm running a 50/50 blend of pellets and the small chips in a smoke tube and that's been working good for us.@@JTB559
One More thing: Keep an eye on the hopper with the chips. When it gets low, the mixture will pile up on the sides of the hopper and you need to reach in and brush them down. 😎
@@txbluzmn I was able to get Hickory and Pecan, the Post Oak was out of stock at the time. One thing I noticed, make sure to not be over 50:50 on chips, it seems to not be able to get up to and hold temp. But as long and it’s half or less works perfectly.
tried these mixed with meat church pellets a few months ago in my 1100 pitboss. Great smoke but after about 20 minutes I shut it down and dumped them. The auger was binding, snapping and popping. I thought it was going to break it. But since I have so much of it mixed up I started using it in a smoke tube for a bit of extra smoke and that works great.
I did this yesterday and started with Smokehouse hickory chips from Amazon. Much smaller than what you used but I had a difficult time getting my temps up over 200. Chips easily went through auger and smoke was definitely there. Did this at night so I went to bed and didn't see much. long 15 hour cook that I had to finish in the oven then 12 hour rest at 155. Taste was great but not the texture. I'll try again with a 2/3 1/3 mix instead of 50/50 on my GMG.
I went to take some of that pork to a deacon and his wife wouldn't open the door cuz I was wearing a shirt that said Maniac on it! 😂😂 she couldn't tell who I was through her ring doorbell so she said she wasn't going to answer the door to anybody who is announcing they're a maniac... 🤣🤣😂
I experimented about a month and a half ago mixing them 50-50 with regular pellets in my recteq and they don’t work they got tight in the auger. sheared the little drive pin off.
Nice video thanks for that. I just ordered my Lonestar pellet grill at the end of December. I do have one question about the insulation on your lid. How’s that working out? I think that’s a great idea.
Thanks again Paul for more LSG PG information. It seems to me that the best pellet grill just got better. How much more smoke flavor did the chip-pellet mixture add over pellets alone? I guess I'm going to have to stop by and see Chris and pick up a box for myself. I was surprised to not see the chips in a bag to help keep moisture out.
I felt it was a definite upgrade in smoke flavor, but it's not a "night-and-day" difference. In other words, I will still do most of my cooking without them due to them being a little pricey and harder to get. To be honest, I was little surprised by the packaging as well, but the chips aren't as moisture sensitive as pellets. Have you ever seen a pellet that got wet? ... not pretty 🙄😬😀 If the chips have a little mosture - it leads to more smoke. I definitely would never soak them, but being exposed to air doesn't hurt them either.
I tried this with 50/50 blend with Limberjack pellets and the small chips wedged between the auger and the wall. It jammed my Pitts & Spits. I had to pull it apart to remove all the wedged pieces.
I installed the heavy duty auger motor in my Pit Boss so this would probably work. But I think they would work best in a side burner pot with a short auger. At the risk of having to tear everything apart because of a jam I won't be trying these in my grill. But as others have stated they would be great in a smoke tube. Cheers.
Enjoyed the video, I have a box of hickory chips for an upcoming cook. Have you tried the pellets made out of pecan shells? Just smoked a couple racks of Baby Back Ribs today, very tasty.
I was wondering if you were going to try these out. I can’t wait to try them, my pit is still in production though. How long would you say in hours does the hopper fully filled with pellets run, and did you notice any difference in how quick it depletes with the mixture of pellets and chips? Great video and always look forward to them
Right on! I've got some Post Oak chips on the way, so I'll do a brisket and really pay attention this time to the consumption rate. I feel like it was less - look how little was used after 7 hours @ 275! but maybe there should be an objective measurement.... new video idea... 🤔
That would have to be an in-depth, removing the deflector after two cooks type of a comparison - which I haven't done. There does seem to be some thicker ash left in the Firebox when I empty it after a chip cook but you're going to do that anyway.
Informative as usual. Appreciate your time and effort. Looking forward to the next video. Wouldn’t mind seeing how much grease comes out of a cook like that and how the ball valve works. 😉Also, what’s the name of the helicopters and do they work?
Thanks!! The amount of grease always varies from each piece of meat being different, how long you cook before you place the pork in a pan, how much you trim or not, etc. I think I showed the drain function on the "5 things" video. 😂my wife found those on Amazon, I believe - I'll look them up and make a link!! Believe it or not - they do work to an extent! the constant motion stops the flies from wanting to land.
The square one with the mesh basket is an Oklahoma Joe's, the black ones are some my wife found on Amazon, and then I have several just regular Home Depot orange ones. They all work great!
2010 24" Vertical with 1/2" firebox. 20x42 pellet grill with cover here. I had one of the first 25 20x42's made. I was preordered before they had the preorder up. I love LSG. Nothing else out there worth buying.
Do you notice a big flavor difference between the vertical and pellet? I am thinking about the IVS for ease of use but this pellet looks good too. Thanks!
It is actually very easy to over smoke on the vertical. The pellet smoker delivers just the right amount of smoke. No other pellet smoker I have seen delivers enough smoke but the LSG's give the perfect kind of and amount of smoke.
In waiting for my 20x42. I tried the chips in my pit boss 1600 pro. Work fine for my first cook, the second cook jammed it solid. Had to use a broom handle to clean it out. I don't recommend it.
The Lone Star Grill auger was designed to process wood chips. It’s their idea & design. I am laughing my butt off at the guys who putting them in other brands of grills and clogging the auger. I have a Lone Star. There is no comparison. Everybody else is dragging a hind tit!

It did all burn, though. There were no chunks left in the Firebox after the cook was done
Wouldn’t work in my Cookshack smoker but I’m keeping them because I intend to order a LSG 42 pellet smoker mainly for briskets.
