  • Installing the windshield and rear window was really difficult. Weed whacker line does make for a good pull cord to ease the rubber seal into the car.
    Challenge #1
    1) Old Seal & used Trim for rear glass
    2) Cheap windshield $169
    3) Aftermarket windshield seal by URO
    4) Questionable window frame straightness
    Plus there was time for a nice drive and visit to the beach!'

    Think those windows are fun, try a rear targa window if you want areal challenge. When I was finishing up my 1973 Targa, I couldnt get any of my local window installers to install the targa glass.I took and drove it onto a piece of wood 10inches wide and used ratchet straps to pull the window down and hold it in place. looked crazy sketchy but it worked. lol

    Looks great with the glass. I have read a few posts on pelican where the URO representative chimed in. They have done a lot of work trying to perfect their front windshield seals. I guess for a while there were some old ones out there that still needed work. I plan on purchasing mine through pelican parts, to make sure a get a good one. I too have a old nasty rear window that is definitely original to my car. I also have a front window but it looks like it has some cloudy discoloration. Someone said online that it could be delaminating? I'm not sure but I was thinking of trying to polish both out to see if I can get them to clean up. I will try the stuff you used! Great video as usual! Let's get the front bumper on and some headlights!

    • @GarageTimeAutoResto
      @GarageTimeAutoResto  3 роки тому +1

      I've had good luck with today's URO parts. The hood seal was great. I've used lots of their grommets and boots plus their motor/trans mounts.
      The only thing I noticed on the windshield rubber is that one lip was stuck down to itself. I had to work it loose, but it separated just fine.
      Also, that compound I used is for paint! It worked well, but there are probably better polishes made for glass.
      Another commenter suggested cerium oxide. I may try that on the scratches.
      Hopefully the windshield clears up for you. There is a film of plastic in there for crash safety. I wonder if the rear doesn't have it?

    I'll have to try the weed eater string when I do the windows on my 911e, I used paracord on my 70 C30 with the cab off the frame and it was a Pain, the weed eater string made it look easier. Also when you get it buttoned up a little more and maybe get the trim in and give it its first wash will you update us on how that seal is holding up, if it leaks or not. I may have to give it a try as I need to replace all the seals on my 911. they broke apart when I removed the windows.

    • @GarageTimeAutoResto
      @GarageTimeAutoResto  3 роки тому +1

      Ok, I'll let you know if it leak or any other problems.
      A bit of caution on the weed whacker string. It can cut the rubber fairly easy. I cut some of the rear seal. Not sure if it was the string or the sharp flange on the car. That is why I put tape on the front.
      Try to find some string without lines on it. Mine had some spiral stuff on it, not perfectly smooth.

    • @XiraArien
      @XiraArien 3 роки тому +1

      I don’t think it contributing to the stiffness as the Rsr models got plexi from start. Also the increase reinforcements and extra welds out in this chassis are huge. However I do not like plastic windows - I think the scratches and haze they get so easily are just not worth it. It is a matter of preference though

    • @GarageTimeAutoResto
      @GarageTimeAutoResto  3 роки тому +2

      Thanks guys, my belief is that the rubber seal on my 911 allows the glass to float a lot. For this reason I don't see how the window could be structural.
      I do agree that modern cars with glued in windows will have more overall chassis rigidity.
      That's why I asked about the E30. It may have something that connects the glass the structure?
      On another note, some say it's likely that my front windshield will crack, since the roll bar and door bars direct stress to the A pillar area. Maybe? Time will tell.
      Currently the front glass is floating a lot, but there is still lots of soap in there that hasn't dried out yet.

      Just different. To me it looks vintage and not too bright. Several people I know don't like it including my son, Zach. But a lot of people do like it.
      To be honest, the color isn't as important as the fit and finish.
      And I'm considering painting the bumpers a different color, since there already is a lot yellow??? Thoughts?

      @@GarageTimeAutoResto yeah - a contrast color for the bumpers (just not black as it hides all the beautiful curves). Maybe white or dark blue?

    • @GarageTimeAutoResto
      @GarageTimeAutoResto  3 роки тому +1

      I will redo with trim when I get a nice set. It went pretty easy. The last 20" or so is always hard. I did watch Mike's video and his assessment of the trim was really good. I agree it's important!

    • @remcotissink
      @remcotissink 3 роки тому +1

      @@GarageTimeAutoResto I think the trim more or less locks the rubber seal into place. It will widen the gap for the trim and thereby make the rubber put a little more pressure on the glass. I've seen a Porsche factory installation of a windshield in a matter of minutes but I've never seen a restoration project doing it that easy.

    • @GarageTimeAutoResto
      @GarageTimeAutoResto  3 роки тому

      If the parts fit well, and you have lots of soap it isn't that hard. I got lucky that I didn't need to modify anything. I think the front will be a little harder when the trim is in place

      No air dryer, but I drain water from the 80 gal tank.

      Let it cool for an hour or so.
      Turn off the compressor.
