Great video. At 14 years old I went to the Athens Olympics, my dad just suddenly thought lets go so we got a flight from the UK and looked for a hotel with a room and spent 7 days watching at least 3 events a day. Even back then I was amazed at how affordable everything was. Tickets started at around E3.50 and they just sold them out of trailers all over Athens. At place where the stadium was, I saw hockey, handball, basketball, softball and baseball and the whole thing was just such a celebration. It was run superbly and so many people were brought into work there. It's so sad to see the state it's in now but I assume its because it was so far out (like end of the metro line) out from the centre of Athens, I assume there was just no demand for any of it. And then the economic state of Greece straight after I suppose is why this was seen as a luxury. I hope it can be restored.
I think you confused the Athens Olympic Sports Complex (OAKA, the one showed in the video) with Helliniko Olympic Complex located at the southern areas of Athens. Your description matches the latter. Unfortunately, Helliniko Olympic Complex is ever more abandoned than the other one.
Here because of Paris 2024. This was a cool and creepy at times video. You certainly took some risks. But think of these stadiums as Hollywood back lots and relics for our imaginations. They were made for one purpose only. Entertainment. I hope you get to do one in Paris in 20 years.
I don't think there will be abandoned Paris venues because most are already established venues or temporary venues which will be taken down after the Olympics, i.e. the beach volleyball venue at the base of the Eiffel Tower. There's only like one or two new venues which are likely to be used after the Olympics
Most of the facilities mentioned in the Athens 2004 are part of a land-use project that will include one of the largest parks in Europe, as well as luxury apartments and shopping malls, since its construction is taking place on the site of the old Athens airport and it is intended to be delivered by 2026.
Thank you! 😊 I did a quick google: The preliminary rounds were in the video, I called it the 'Taekwando stadium', but I believe it was used for handball in the Olympics. The later rounds were moved to the Helliniko Olympic Indoor Arena, but that is just a pile of rubble now sadly! I was considering going down there, but there is nothing to see anymore
You asked if any recent hosting city has profited from the games. I don't know about profit but London 2012 did ok. The stadium is being used by a Premier League football club, the white water centre is still being used, the mountain bike forest course is very popular and still being used, the velodrome, swimming pool etc are still going strong I think and the whole area of Stratford has been rejuvenated because it was a right 💩hole before. Poor Greece at the turn of the millennium they won the Football European Champions and hosted a wonderful Olympic Games in its rightful place but it all went to 💩 after that - very sad😞
This is so sad man! When you think those places were so alive 20 years ago and now they are a ruin… don’t know why they didn’t build on the oportunity and keep the place alive and use it for what it was made…😢
I was actually un two games, one of them very close to the seat you sat on and it is very sad to see this go to waste. Yet, this is a very common look for many other venues and buildings, all over Greece, that are owned by the Greek state.
Athens 04 was the first Olympics I vividly remember watching. I loved the opening ceremony. Seeing Phelps win Gold. And everything else about these games. The XXVIII Olympiad will forever hold a special place in my heart. Sad to see the state of these buildings.
Great video man, inspired me to catch a flight and check out the volleyball centre in a couple of weeks. Did you have to climb the rope back up to get back on track or did you manage to find an easier way out?
3 nations have abonded venues Sarajevo ,Bosnia (Winter Olympics) Athens ,Greece (Summer Olympics) Rio ,Brazil (Summer Olympics) It is sad that all these venues died because of greed. War in yugoslavia , economic crisis in Brasil and same thing with greece
Oh no. These usual Olympic facilities in Greece 🇬🇷 were left behind, of course, it looks like a huge abandoned area. So sad. I hope that those European 🇪🇺 countries will come together in Athens to find some strategies for these Olympic facilities redevelopment and renovation but it is a rehabilitation of its development.
The main Olympic arena, where they used for track is open for concerts. We were able to go to a concert and the track is still there intact, but everything else looks pretty bland and bare. Like where you went at the beach volleyball. It’s so sad to see such a gorgeous stadium go to waste essentially
It's sad to see.... But to be fair, Greece had one of the best opening ceremonies ever. The Games itself was also very well done imo... I think the Olympics should always be held in Greece and the flame should always burn there. And countries from all over the world can perform during the opening ceremony, and rotate... For instance, 1 country from South America, North America, Europe, Africa, Asia, etc. can contribute to the opening ceremony. All countries should pay a fee to Greece for the maintenance of stadiums, and the Olympic committee should do financial and physical inspections / audits..
You are obviously from the Northern Hemisphere. Lets host it in the Southern Hemisphere every four years and see how you go watching the events at 3am every day.
@jimbler I'm from South Africa haha... Time differences are not linked to being south or north, btw... It's more a question of how far east or west you are from the Greenwich meridian...(So we all adapted when the Olympics were in Atlanta, Sydney, Beijing, Rio... Athens, London and Paris were easier for South Africans to follow, but even so - we work during the day so it is not as if we can all just watch the Olympics when it is live.) I do believe that Greece should be the permanent host. Irrespective of time-differences.
@@adrian3355w Having every Olympics in Greece would be a good way to kill it off down here. You're kidding if you don't think time-differences mean a thing. Every major Athletics and Swimming final in France was on between 2am and 6am here. It would be absolutely ridiculous to continue with that every Olympics. TV ratings were massively down here compared to the Tokyo Olympics.
What were they thinking? All that space could be filled with apartments surrounding these venues. It was such a beautiful Olympics and the decay is so sad to see.
Most of the Olympic complex in Marousi is still in use to this day. The main stadium is used to host football matches and concerts, the velodrome is used by Greek teams for practice and competitions, the building that you showed at 39:44 is the basketball arena used by many teams, all the swimming pools are functional and used every day. The area surrounding everything is massive and of course cannot be maintained properly, but in general it is kept in a pretty ok state. All the other facilities that were built in the south (beach volleyball courts, baseball courts) and in the east (the Marathon complex that hosted the canoe kayak competition) are abandoned and await to be sold and developed, as it is happening in Ellinikon, the former airport situated in the south of Athens. If you are still in Athens, hit me and we can meet for a proper tour!
That's cool! Thanks for responding! The most bizarre thing I couldn't work out was how to do any activities at the Olympic Sports Center. We wanted to use the pool and access some of the facilities in the area, but there was nobody to speak to and nowhere to pay. We went back maybe 2-3 times and it looks like a ghost town. I imagine a lot of tourists would want to use the facilities, but there is very little information on how to give money to somebody to use the equipment.
@@s34nTravels Unfortunately in order for someone to use the facilities, they have to be a member of a team or a club. Neither the pools, nor the velodrome or the basketball courts are open to the general public. Some teams have special "memberships" for individuals who want to train by themselves, but the schedule is really specific, because you need to have someone from the club (like a trainer) to watch you all the time that you use the facilities, for safety reasons. So, it is inconvenient for tourists, but for us that live in the general area it's not that bad. The lack of information or people to talk to is usual, again because nobody expects tourists to come and to actually want to use the facilities!
Half of all the venues were up until recently in Hellinikon, the former airport. All were demolished, because a Metropolitan Park is being built, with actually and surprisingly big progress. I mean, a skyscraper almost 200m tall is being built there, along with 6 others, and already the first floors have been built, so you could say that's a redevelopment. But most of the venues shown in the video are completely abandoned. The Olympic Stadium, the Basketball Arena, the Aquatics Arena and the Taekwondo stadium are still in use thankfully and remain in good shape, but they need regular maintenance. The Olympic Stadium's roof is going to be renovated completely, mainly for the glass
Fun facts: modern Athens Olympic stadium was originally built in ‘82 as a soccer stadium. It was renovated in ‘04 for the Olympics. And like another commenter said, it hosted Coldplay this summer, but that show was originally postponed because the roof of the Olympic stadium was deemed structurally unsafe earlier this year. The government paid like $50M to renovate it.
My boy, good on you that you made the video. I like the vibe! I am planning to do a similar one as well soon. Best regards from Cyprus and holler at me if you ever come here to take you with me to some cool places.
Not much has changed since I visited in 2019. 37:03 it looked like a fitness center when I was there. The swimming pool had competitive lap swim practice when I was there.
the building at 30 mins is still in use for concerts in fact 2 month ago there was the Athens Tattoo convention there and later in the year they are doing a comic con
Haha. I did the exact same thing as you back in 2016...Took a day to explore and see what I could find. Overall it looked a lot worse back then; the swimming stadium has changed for the better and some of the general areas look better maintained. It was such a good adventure but equally very saddening as I'd watched the 2004 Olympics and couldn't believe how far it had fallen into disrepair. Did you manage to pick up any souvenirs?? I picked up of one of the blue tiles that are used everywhere and took it back to the UK with me. I can send you some of the photos I took if you'd be interested :-)
So interestingly about that boat in the beginning. Last time I went there (around 5 years ago) there existed a few more abandoned yachts, which you can see on google maps as well. I cannot find any sources to confirm, but I heard that those were confiscated by the authorities and left there. Don't know if it's true but such boats are rather expensive to be left to rot like this. I think the fact that you cannot find any other boats in working condition near them leads credence to the theory.
Hmm... thats not entirely true though is it, I mean look at the UK; all stadiums built for the Olympic's are still used, Athletes accommodation was turned into housing, Olympic village/park is heavily used to this day, and the Olympic stadium is now the home of West Ham football club.
I bet Athens will probably host this event again in 2104 or 2096 (or possible earlier) and not use a single thing it used in 2004. Of course everyone who was alive in 2004 will be long gone or in some care home and it won't matter at all how much money they wasted.
What a sad waste. I really hate random countries wasting money on one-off stadiums that barely get used again (Qatar, Brazil, Russia, SA, Sochi, Beijing come to mind). I would prefer semi-permanent hosts for Olympics, World Cup and so on
Regarding the (sad) beach volleyball situation in Athens: The YEARLY budget of the Greek Volleyball Association for BOTH indoors volleyball & beach volleyball TOGETHER has been sitting at measly 50.000 euros for many years now, so... Yeah...
The grounds were so great. If it had been kept in good condition, the time would soon have come to think about holding the Olympics there again. But the venues are in such a state of disrepair that it makes no sense.
It was amazing back then. Architect Santiago calatrava designed the area around the olympic stadium, just magic. To sad to see, but the attendence was low already back then. Few tickets sold, greece is a small country close to other small countries (compare to Paris or london) so no use for all the arenas..
the funniest thing about the tae kwon do building? it's still used, but it's used for everything EXCEPT tae kwon do tournaments... at least that's my knowledge, I'll be glad to hear otherwise
I'm glad it' still used! It looked kinda abandoned, but I had a theory maybe its used for special events. Is tae kwon do popular in Greece? I wonder if there's a few tae kwon do folks in Athens, and they are mad that they can't use this stadium for it's intended purpose 😆
@@s34nTravels For a period it kinda was. It was probably the most popular martial art for some time. I remember that when I was 9 or 10 years old, my parents had me take classes together with my brother and a lot of other kids were attending as well, there were probably 15, and that was in a rural greek town so I guess it was kinda popular.
We're still overpaying for them and we will be for eternity 😢 The satellite image of the Olympic stadium shows the super special stage of the WRC Aveopolis Rally. That was actually cool.
That's cool! Thanks for info! It's a shame they don't put them to use more. As a tourist, I really wanted to use the facilities and put money back into it. It's a shame that it was impossible to do that
First of all, you didn't have to use a rope to access the area. There is an entrance from the other side where the marina is. The beach volley stadium and the entire area around it was completely abandoned for many years. Gradually some buildings started being used as municipality offices etc but the stadium remained abandoned. Despite that, the sand remained intact. During the covid period, many people looking for outdoor activities, discovered the place which is great for walking, biking, fishing and some even played beach volleyball in the courts. Later the main court was closed probably for safety reasons. Less than month ago, after the recording of the video, the stadium caught fire and was further damaged. This stadium was beautiful and in an fantastic area by the sea and it always made me wonder why it wasn't repurposed and was simply left to die. The next stadium you show is the taekwondo stadium which is still used today for hosting all kinds of events.

we are good to create ruins here in Greece, dont be sad
Isn't Greece supposed to have ruins though?
Woow, I would love to have a program booklet like this from 2004 😮

I wish I could have one of those souvenirs!
Just discovered your channel and this video! Amazing!!
You still have any of those brochures for sale?.. 😃
Thank you!! 😊😊
Sorry they are all gone 🥲
Athens 04 was the first Olympics I vividly remember watching. I loved the opening ceremony. Seeing Phelps win Gold. And everything else about these games. The XXVIII Olympiad will forever hold a special place in my heart.
Sad to see the state of these buildings.
Great video man, inspired me to catch a flight and check out the volleyball centre in a couple of weeks. Did you have to climb the rope back up to get back on track or did you manage to find an easier way out?
3 nations have abonded venues
Sarajevo ,Bosnia (Winter Olympics)
Athens ,Greece (Summer Olympics)
Rio ,Brazil (Summer Olympics)
It is sad that all these venues died because of greed. War in yugoslavia , economic crisis in Brasil and same thing with greece
Torino has an abandoned ski slope too. I think you can find a little bit of something in most countries!
@@s34nTravels In Brazil not so much "economic crisis", but more of "corrupt politicians".
I went there in the summer of 2022. That area which once had 10s of 1000s of people now is pretty much dead. It’s literally a ghost town now
The main Olympic arena, where they used for track is open for concerts.
@@adrian3355w china 2008 was best opening
Its such a shame. Everything was beautiful and state of the art. Our of all the venues i thought Athen's was the most impressive.
Hey, you arrived a bit late there to watch the olympics in Athens. Just 20 years late.
Free entry though!
With the beach volleyball venue, if you google images, there was a massive temporary grand stand across the main stand.
It's sad that it'snt getting used!
Crazy that the most interesting content has least views, this is so cool
It's ok, we have our own secret little club then! 😆💯

Thank you! :)
I would love to visit Cyprus again at some point!
Not much has changed since I visited in 2019. 37:03 it looked like a fitness center when I was there. The swimming pool had competitive lap swim practice when I was there.
It’s like watching a real life Aliens going through the abandoned buildings
loved the video, mate. Quite sad how the government didn't promote sport for the next generation of greek kids to play and use these facilities.
Thank you! 😊 I agree with you there
the building at 30 mins is still in use for concerts in fact 2 month ago there was the Athens Tattoo convention there and later in the year they are doing a comic con
I guessed correctly then! haha! Looks a little run down, but im glad its being used at least!
I am Greek my friend and this is really sad...
This is why hosting an Olympic event doesn't do the city or country any good.
Hmm... thats not entirely true though is it, I mean look at the UK; all stadiums built for the Olympic's are still used, Athletes accommodation was turned into housing, Olympic village/park is heavily used to this day, and the Olympic stadium is now the home of West Ham football club.
Bruh Polaris really did greece over
I bet Athens will probably host this event again in 2104 or 2096 (or possible earlier) and not use a single thing it used in 2004. Of course everyone who was alive in 2004 will be long gone or in some care home and it won't matter at all how much money they wasted.
Σε λίγο καιρό θα το αντιγράψει και κάποιος Έλληνας creator όπως έγινε με Ομόνοια
What a sad waste. I really hate random countries wasting money on one-off stadiums that barely get used again (Qatar, Brazil, Russia, SA, Sochi, Beijing come to mind). I would prefer semi-permanent hosts for Olympics, World Cup and so on
In South Africa all the 2010 World Cup stadiums are still maintained, operational and in use.
Regarding the (sad) beach volleyball situation in Athens:
The YEARLY budget of the Greek Volleyball Association for BOTH indoors volleyball & beach volleyball TOGETHER has been sitting at measly 50.000 euros for many years now, so... Yeah...
Really nice video? You still got one of the programs?
The grounds were so great. If it had been kept in good condition, the time would soon have come to think about holding the Olympics there again. But the venues are in such a state of disrepair that it makes no sense.
It was amazing back then. Architect Santiago calatrava designed the area around the olympic stadium, just magic. To sad to see, but the attendence was low already back then. Few tickets sold, greece is a small country close to other small countries (compare to Paris or london) so no use for all the arenas..
Is it too late to comment for an Athens program? I wish I'd found the video sooner. This is very fun content
Sorry they are all gone sadly!
the funniest thing about the tae kwon do building? it's still used, but it's used for everything EXCEPT tae kwon do tournaments... at least that's my knowledge, I'll be glad to hear otherwise
It's a shame that it was impossible to do that
This is a awesome video!
Glad you liked it! 💯😊👌
I didn’t know Linus had an urban exploring channel

Athens in general is pretty derelict. But this is cool.
It’s not oranges they are neratzia
Τώρα, το κατάλαβε!!!!!!!! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Malaka poly swstos omws!
So embarrassing 😳 being left to rot to the core. No excuses.
I'm amazed they couldn't use these venues after the Olympics.
I wonder if these venues were used at all after the Olympics. What a shame.

What does the ship have to do with the Olympics other than it's found in Athens?

It's an Olympic ghost town. In 2004, it was going to be the Olympics taking back to where it all started many many years ago in Athens, Greece and they did so. But it sure has changed a lot since then. But if it's there why not explore it?
