Well, this particular one is hard to make useful after the event, as ski jumping isnt exactly something Joe and Jane Average can do. But in general its true, Olympic Games are for the prestige of the hosting nation/city, the profit for the IOC, the entertainment of the plebs and maybe most importantly, the athletes. And not so much sustainability.
its mad to think something so huge would be built for such a small group of people competing in the Olympics, you'd think it would have to stay open for both tourists and future competitors training - such a massive waste of money when you think it sits abandoned - the resources used to engineer this is a marvel in it's self - complete and utter bonkers
really poor planning and Italy already had properly functioning skijumping hills in Predazzo and this is where the competition should have been held also, to cut down so many trees and now leave such a mess is so bad for the environement
The first building you came to was where the judges sit to decide how much points to give. Ski jumping positions are decided on distance and form/style. The style points are decided by the judges from that box. The room at the top of the box is occupied by the organisation mainly for safety. The series of benches/railings after are for the coaches. They give a signal to their jumper to go down the slope and make the jump once a green light is shown. The blue cage is where the ski jumper goes from. It's normally got sponsor board at the high end of the gate behind the jumper.
Livin here, I want to add that the villag was, and still is, a well known winter sports location before the olympics. We tried to use the bigger stuff like this after but almost nobody want to do that.
Just looking at all of the floodlighting which is still there... those are not cheap! Seems a shame for all that money to be spent on kit that gets used a few times and then abandoned.
The blue machines - "Cables pull a miniature ice resurfacing machine up the inrun to produce the ice that is a few centimeters deep and 13.5 centimeters, or 5.3 inches, wide. The machine also produces small grooves in the ice so skis will not stick"
Cortina in northern Italy is another place where there is another old Olympic village and ski jump , A James Bond movie was filmed there in the late 1970's "For Your Eyes Only"
My theory regarding the blue trolleys at the tops of the slopes - could they be used to level out and shape the snow, and also possibly to spray fresh snow artificially?
This town is still a ski resort in winter. The chair lifts you showed look like they will still be running during the season. Not surprised the ski jump wasn’t used enough after the games as this is a quiet village, near the busier resort of sestriere, and ski jumping isn’t as popular in Italy as elsewhere in Scandinavia, Eastern Europe etc. Shame it has been left like this.
You need to carry on round to the bobsled track, and buildings. They are vast. There is also a derelict monorail that sits at the bottom of the station it was left in, in that town which was massively over developed for the olympics and it’s hardly been occupied since.
Hi a great video and I really enjoyed it so much. The video did capture the site well and wow just amazing the views from the top of the ski slope and It sure looked really steep. Thank you so much for making this.
On a school skiing trip, we went skied on one of the women's downhill course, in 2015. No idea if it was abandoned then or not but wild to see how overgrown it all is.
Ohhhhhhh..... yes! It is, the skiers shuffle out on to it before they 'take off'! I was just reading all the comments hoping someone would explain :D Now I know :) thanks :)
What another epic explore lads one that I am sure took a fair bit of exertion to complete. As much as I enjoyed the video, it does make you question why organisations around the world are allowed to build these facilities without having a future plan and funding for its continued use after the main event. It's little wonder why environmentalists and the general public feel aggrieved about how public money is spent!
I think the blue carts would have been used to maintain the slope, remember when it was covered in snow and ice there was no chance of standing on it or you would end up at the bottom very quickly...
What a wonderful video! I was lucky enough to visit Holmenkollen ski jump in Norway. We could only go to the level where the take off is - the sheer size both up the hill and down the landing place blew my tiny 11 year old mind! I just looked up Holmenkollen to make sure I had spelling correct and went down a bit of a rabbit hole of info about just how many re-builds it's had since I was there in around 1978 - my now 55 year old tiny mind is blown again at just how much bigger these hills have become since then!!! Presumably skiiers kept outjumping the hills! Thanks for the trip down memory lane and the education! (I still don't know what the blue cart thing is though - I'm off to read the comments to see if anyone else explains it :D )
Id love to see anything that is left from the abandoned Sarajevo winter Olympics, i believe there are parts of the bobsled track complete with bullet holes from the war and an intact but abandoned ski jump & slope.
@@TB-us7el We're living through tough times in a tough world. I'd heard, although this was on social media, so be a bit cautious, that rocks are being disturbed all of the world, not just in Turin. I live in quite a quiet, rural part of the UK and i'd heard that someone had done the same sort of thing here. If it can happen here than I can only imagine that the practice is widespread, and maybe, without trying to be alarmist, could happen to a greater extent in places such as mountains or even quarries. Stay safe out there and may god keep all rocks in exactly the position that they're meant to be in.
I have a request - Thwaite Hall in Cottingham, Hull. Used to be my student digs in my first year, there might be some interesting things there. It was quite an old interesting building with nice grounds.
Hi Alistar how you doing? Great video as always its really amazing that a place like this has been left abandoned like this, the place should be open as a museum or a tour place where someone would guide paying guests to see such an amazing place that was popular to the area at one time anyways i hope your having a good afternoon so far and keep up the great content on your channel like always and congratulations on reaching 100k subscribers on your channel you truely deserve all of the 100k people that have subscribed to you as your content is so proffesional it almost feels like im with you exploring the place anyways congrats once again 👍
At least for the Olympics in Cortina 2026 they use an existing skijumping stadium in Predazzo / Val di Fiemme where world championships were organised and was built in the late 1980s. But it's very sad to see this... The bobshleigh track for the Olympics 2006 was also new, but demolished 5-6 years later... 🙈 Now for Cortina 2026 they have to build a new bobsleigh track or use an existing track in Switzerland or Austria...
All that for 3 weeks??? What a colossal waist of material and money. I cannot believe how much money and effort was put into building this, to only see it all rot away and mar up the landscape for years to come. Sad. Bet you guys were sore the next day though : ) Thanks for showing us.
On one hand an absolute disgusting waste on all accounts, but there has to be a serious amount of credit given to the people who specified the materials used in it's construction. Not a bit of rust 15 years on on the structures.
The reason its abandoned is average joe doesnt do ski jumping like that , thats for lunatics and theres big jumps in beter areas so they train there. So this one had no chance of make money.
As it is, the site seems to have little to no intrinsic value. Why not create or acquire drawings, inventory lists and photos of structural and mechanical components that comprise the site. Invite creative people to come up with alternate uses for it all. Just giving the materials to builders and artists would be better than just letting it all sit there rotting and rusting.
Great video! Wonder if it's unused as lack of snow due to climate change? Sad to see it in this condition. I don't get why people feel the need to vandalise it.
its time things changed in the world and we stop all this waste , its actually obsean amounts of money wasted hear for what is a few weeks of display and then left to rack and ruin , build it once and use it as a venue for the sport for years to come even if it costs money to move competitors its got to be better for the environment and cheaper to reuse this
I find it quite shocking how many of these Olympic venues end up abandoned. All that money spent for just one event then left to rot
It's easy spending someone else's money with literally no accountability and the opportunity to get some kick back for yourselves
The IOC needs to look at a way of having venues like this in a kind of pool, then rotate around them to stop the waste.
@@electroid8119 So cynical and yet, sadly, so very true. :/
I don't understand why they don't factor in demo and reclamation, no different than minors have to do.

My theory regarding the blue trolleys at the tops of the slopes - could they be used to level out and shape the snow, and also possibly to spray fresh snow artificially?
My thoughts exactly. No regular piste basher is going on those jumps so they need their own bespoke slope grooming solution.
Cuts the grooves in the snow that the skiers use is my guess. Great video guys.

I thought that too.
Judges boxes. They judge for style as well as distance.
Thanks for this interesting upload. It's sad that such a venue that brought so much enjoyment is now consigned to memory and history.

Absolutely fantastic tour. Great to see some different angles of a ski jump and shows what balls they had to go down the slope 👏👏👏
The blue device at the top of the small hill is called a Gate. Positioned at the any number where they started from. Great vid btw

I believe the blue things at the tops of both ramps were used for cutting the center tracks in the snow for the skiiers to follow during their jumps

Nice to see a video there
Well done guys another very interesting video, so sad how these people let these places go to disrepair😢
Repair them for what? Nobody is using them.
Wow, this is fantastic...love how you have brought it back to life after all this time...not good with heights myself though...lol

was the blue things sort of brushes for snow on the slopes
At what point did some numpty think "I know - let's strap two planks to our feet and pretend we can fly".
I suspect the numpty who took a wrong turn on a piste and found themself gracefully trying to find a way to fly down to the valley below! :D
