Subaru R-STi - JDM vs USDM: A Friendly Rivalry -- /TUNED
Вставка
- Опубліковано 13 жов 2013
- In the US, we never got the best Subaru of them all, the first generation WRX coupe, getting stuck with the fun-but-not-fast 2.5RS version. One of the more popular upgrades for those cars is the "R-STi" drivetrain swap. In the season premiere of Tuned, we look at two approaches: the USDM drivetrain swap, and the JDM drivetrain swap. Which is better? You decide.

A show car can't always be a track car but a track car can always be a show car.
Nick Harrison so true
Funny how the comment directly below yours basically says the same thing, but it was posted at least 3 months before yours, yet you have more likes haha.
y i o
This car ain't even Jdm wtf.
@@michaelarkell5437 🤨
This video is singlehandedly responsible for raising the prices of these 2.5s
Seriously dude i just bought a swpped rs because of thjs video for 7800
Sti coupes expensive in japan with 120000 miles . $8000 USd . Export cost to you the 12000 after rego . Cleanest examples your looking at $15000 USd in japan
patrick ral 7800 for a swapped one is a good price actually.. i mean also depends on the condition and everything else but a swap isnt a cheap process either. Thats not a bad deal
The owners need to pay for there vapes
Big Mike they were never cheap to begin with.
I couldn't stop smiling when I heard the JDM one
maybe...
dont tell me how to live my life
Tony Crawford had her arse flaps spread on the couch bent over your favourite cushion
***** That sound was sexy :)
Higher rev engine than Usdm
@@phodacbitch wtf 😂😂😂
The sound coming off the JDM swap... Pure earporn...
Yes it did sound great.
It’s the Tomei dawg
@@gunner5650 wher did that meme come from.
Jevon Bigga it’s from freshhkiiicks
@@gunner5650 thx.
The blue one looks nicer but is a little too low. But that grey one damn. Almost perfect.
It is not low anymore haha
Rivalry makes faster cars, and lighter wallets.
Thats why we need competition in the marketplace. Drives prices down and performance up.
The good ole' American way.
Regualtions makes cars expensive . It makes performance gains expensive too
Nolan Milnes two guys one cup.
It's all about weight reduction bro. If you can't afford food, you are reducing more weight!
There's a marvelous invention called exhaust dumps. You can have a full exhaust and hit a switch to go full free flow. Best of both worlds.
Went to school with Irvin. Pretty cool seeing someone grow up and do what they love.
Yeah Irvin is a good guy!
The older models have so much more character... And a used Impreza costs more than a new one nowadays...
The number of times I've watched this since it came out is ridiculous. Haha can't wait to get my hands on one.
I came back to this video for this reason. Did you end up with a subie?
7:10 "this is like driving a little mosquito that's on a whole bunch of great drugs" that was funny
I'm an old Camaro-Mustang guy at heart, but I really do like Subaru!!! I'd love to give my Outback some STI treatment.
swap it! hahaha

I have a Subaru impreza WRX sti 2007 and I love it
Love the looks of the blue one, but my goodness, that grey one sound dirty.
The RSX was a great car. If we found the right one, I'd love to.
A race car can always be a show car. A show car can't always be a race car.
hoabadoa true
Both are mega clean Subarus. Wish they were cheaper to insure over in the UK.
The owner of the grey RS knows what he's doing, his car is built with a direct performance-oriented goal. That hipster owner of the blue stance/scrape nation RS shows a prime example of form > function...which irritates me how the cars are built today.
There wasnt anything wrong with his car...smh its about money, and he chose to put his money into a usdm ej257 engine, which is 2-3x more than the ej20k, and just hadn't gotten to the suspension/brake stage of the build. I think he actually did end up doing coilovers and whatnot but if i recall right, he sold the blue one. I just happen to come accross both of them on IG a few weeks ago.
NePdXploit Scrapes, stance nation, wheel fitment, stretched tires, and rolled fenders is a lot wrong...to me...they are the skinny jeans of performance cars. This is what I was trying to get across. But now if you're talking how money could have been spent on this build, that expensive CF hood, scoop, and lip could have been traded for suspension to keep him from rubbing, or brakes to safely slow the swapped car down, but at the time of filming, it was mostly a "show car" @ 1:21. Don't get me wrong, I love GC's. I've had 3 of them out of 7 Subarus I've owned in the last 16 years. I just really don't care for the blue one in this vid. Totally a subjective opinion. If you're offended, I apologize.
He still drives a better than you
SubieDiamond The driver in this video is not the owner of either cars.
***** All these cars on the street have wheel fitment and bag drops like something out of Jada Toys Street Machines at Toys 'R Us. I guess everyone's cars are literally toys. Might as well add a pull back to roll feature to them...
Always wanted a RS. Love both of these cars
Love coming back to this video every now and then.. one of the first videos that got me into this channel!
This is my fave episode of tuned. Shining a light on the little guys. Showing what you can do with a car time. Keep em coming.
The good news is that this season there are quite a few random home built cars, and less mainstream shop stuff (though there is some)
I see the blue one alot he drives to naples island in long beach.
I watch for the first time this video in 2014 when i was 16 and today i finished my impreza coupe swap thanks /drive to have made me discover the car i love and appreciate everyday i watch this vid over 20 time since 2014
Really inspiring just seeing other peoples passion for their builds. Great video
im so high right know watching this video, and its the best thing i ever seen, Yessir
I liked both of these cars. I agree with the presenter that the Subaru 2.5 RS only needed a little more power to come alive. Thank you for finding these two cars and driving them around two of my favorite L.A. roads.
Great video Thad, Tom and Matt. I like the concept of comparing two similar but different cars. Thanks for posting!
best /TUNED episode ever!!!
LOVE this!
never get tired of watching this video, its my inspiration
Me neither ive probably wathed this video around 10 times already haha
Hahahahaha. I'm hitting the twenties now
Glad I'm not alone lol. When I can't afford gas and get sick of the forza 22b this video usually does the trick.
Lol
Thanks haha
missing the pink Subaru sti logo. other than that, the exterior seems pretty accurate, my dad owns a 98 sti in Japan and is a beast in the mountainous areas there
on the blue one
+Michael Cardno do you drive a white AE86 too and deliver tofu?
Killer Keemaronie initial D reference 😂😂
They're not STIs. They're not even WRXs.
Whats an impreza with an STi drivetrain? one would call it an STi...
Awesome video, great camera work, nice gear changing, Subaru rules..... From England
I watched this video dozens of time I'm not into subaru but it's always inspiring to see tunning and a love for it
I love this video, it inspires me
One of the more inspiring car videos ive come across.
You are a great presenter. Love all your vids. We need more! :)
Watch this video like a hundred times.. But still watching it every week
this video inspired me to finally start my dream once again to start my project car subaru RSTI.
but first, let you pass the driving licence
dude im 30 years old.
dexter tolentino You tell him! I hate UA-cam arseholes.
bang! Get rekt m8
Gonna be buying a wagon soon. I love the older Subarus far more than the new. Classics are always better
This video made me love the classic subie. 2 years later my 96 Impreza is in the process of getting a wrx swap. Love these cars!
Thank you for this video! I started getting back into the import world after my whole Jeep phase which was a very long time. To be honest I was inspired by this video as well as folks that I have met talking about the Subaru life. I knew very little about Subarus when I started, and now I know a lot more then when I first started. GC8 body is indeed the holy grail of Subaru chassis, and I would have any other body style if I was going to go all out into the import scene again. Swapped with EJ207 v7 courtesy of lots of swearing with broken bolts due to our New England weathered cars. Ultimate sleeper mode with a refined style of import. Less flashy, no bling, all go!
The second sounds great!
"It's like driving a mosquito that's on a whole bunch of great drugs" Best...Description....Ever.
This will forever be my favorite video on youtube.
awesome review as always Matt
i love how these cars look
I'm not going to say it was THE best design period in automotive history, but 1999 was definitely a good year for sporty coupes and sedans. Clean simple contours almost across the board, on lightweight, small-ish sports coupes and sedans. GC WRX/STI, Evo VI, FC RX-7, Mk. IV Supra, W20 MR-2, S205 GT-Four, B5 S4/RS4, Mk4 R32, E36 M3, E39 M5, R34 Skyline, S15 Silvia, Z32 300ZX, Galant VR-4, GTO MR/3000GT VR-4, AP1 S2000, etc. Now what do we have? No more RX-7, no more Supra, no more GT-Four, no more MR-2, no more VR-4's, etc. No more sexy WRC cars like the 22B. Everything keeps getting bigger and lumpier and heavier and (most of the time) uglier - weird angles festooned with LEDs. Don't get me wrong, there are some sexy cars out there today, but it's not like the old days.
Thats super clean. I bought the seats irvin took off his car a while back. Thanks bro your car is beautiful
Awesome video! I liked the comparison between the ej25 and 20. I'm in the middle of rebuilding my girlfriends ej20k. Can't wait to get it back on the road after watching this
What does he mean by getting his engine smogged? at 7:20
also how does he have a "stealth mode" to make his quieter
smog is just exhaust emission tests. the silent mode he's talking about is just having a quiet exhaust
Some States and Provinces require your car to pass an emissions test in order for you to obtain a registration sticker..
see CARB
Old scoobs are the way!!!!!
I love your videos guys. Matt you are the best car show host. Yes better than Top gear, and I mean that! Keep up the good work! Cheers!
I watch this video at least 2 to 3 times a day. It inspires me like no other to build my gc8 to look like james and perform like irvins.
These are the best style imprezes ever imho.
If you did this to an n/a subie here in aus you'd never hear the end of it.
If you take the best aspects of both cars and combine them, you have something that is literally (at least in my view) flawless. Very cool cars.
The video that made me get my first subi asap. I fell in love
Anyone hear the fart at 9:34?
Ahahaha
hahahahaha
I heard it😂😂😂
Brilliant. Crying I’m laughing so hard.
That's some back fire 😂😂
Found the song its called Merge by Tom Quick
I love you!
Could you link, I can't find it.

These two are looking awesome!
Awesome sound from the grey 2-door and it looks really well built, I would buy it straight away
the gray one is fantastic
Love the fact that its smoking the Mustang.
This has just made me fall in love with Subaru all over again! R-STi - JDM is definitely got me drooling!
how right you are my friend. I saw this and wanted to watch it over and over again. Love the RS so much, i was glad to see it in an all out setting like this, especially hosted by this guy. lol
Matt you just need to find a friend at Subaru of America, they have a 22B in the country and they let journalists play with it from time to time, as far as I'm aware they store it at their HQ in Cherry Hill NJ
ladies and gentlemen... My favorite car's in the world. Hoping to build one when I'm done building my ek civic hatch
Currently working with a 2006 WRX. It's pretty nice.
Would love to see you civic, bro. So bad...
this is one of my favorite videos
Amazing video, great contrast between the cars.
22b wouldnt be like the second one in the degree of, the 22b was SILENT, stealth, but it had the balls and looks.
Music is:
us.audionetwork.com/browse/m/track/merge_31120?composer=46
Give thanks to this user: Kwimmert1 because that's where I found the link.
Thanks man
My pleasure. I had to know, as well.
best comment❤
one of my fav videos Matt
I really love the music Drive uses for their videos. This song just got in my brain and now it's stuck there!
2:09 Someone's been watching a little too much Regular Car Reviews? Lol
Thats my fav Subie but yet hard as hell to find one thats up for sale when you have the money, if at ever lol. The 07 is the only other Subie that is sexy too.
Nathan Clevenger Got one for 7,000 in southern california. there's guys selling them for 1,500 blown motors.
Matt this video introduced me to this swap about a year ago and now mine will be done Friday
fantastic machines, timeless and priceless in my eyes.
so much fun for so little money.
Smiles Per Gallon
Can't believe that RS transmition hasn't detonated yet
blew mine in 3rd lol
That is the first thing I thought.
engine makes too much power for it? what would be a better trans.?
The stock RS transmission is notorious for its inability to handle power. An STi 6speed is really what you want but even the 5 speed from a WRX is better.
scolding shoe They have a nickname of "glass boxes" instead of gear boxes. They're usually fine, but when added power and more aggressive driving, they have a tendency to shatter to bits.
Nice. Thanks. And good toss at the end.
love the look of both of them!!
They aren't that cheap, when I was going to do mine, the engine swap alone was $7k. Then all the drivetrain made it over the top, well worth it. But not as cheap as he says...
Kyle Saucedo true bro
I spent at least 8k on my whole swap years ago 207 6 spd in a 02 wrx and sold it. I then vowed to never own another money pit like that but I just bought a 2.5rs to do the same swap again fml haha
Love my subarus even if they aren’t that reliable. 😬
They’re gc8s if anything
I’ve got a 2.5 rs coupe that I picked up for $2300 and then did the 207 swap and a six speed for 7k. Not that bad at all
WHY DO I WATCH THIS SO MUCH
Excited that Tuned is back!! :)
great guys and part of my subaru group.. i remember the blue rs before it was swapped. and was a pretty car then too. i only hope to get my 99 rs coupe to this caliber one day.
I think this is the best looking Subaru ever made, after the 22b
The sound of the grey subaru.... Wruuuuuuuuuuuuuhmmmm boom
Love the sound!
Best car video I have seen on youtube. Ever.
makes me sad when I hear approximately how much these cost when I'm driving a 22k 04 sti, I wish I could build a car like these dudes but I'm just not a mechanic, I just love cars and especially subarus.
I NEED A RSTI NOW! ಥ_ಥ
Same
Loved the video and I'm sure the people at /drive know that when u have a Rousch mustang as your Chase car your defining pro
I'm so jealous. I hope to find one of these one day. good vid
Blue one needs bigger exhaust....
Have a stock 2.5RS want to do a swap but no money :'( this is inspiring tho
it's at 182k miles and is rusty af doubt you want to buy it
If it has a engine and transmission I'll buy it
Would you guys swap a GF8 or sell it and buy a GC8?
buy a gc8... the swap in a gf8 is almost not worth the trouble tbh
In Australia they put ej207 in a wrx wagons .
super good vid really well done....wish my wrx was that nice.
Never really gave this Subie a second look...but this vid definitely has me green with envy that I didn't know about it sooner!
"And I'm approaching 8 mph on this very tight canyon road..."
Yea that didn't make sense haha
80 lol
for the lawyers
I thought it was dad joke at first.
The guy on the right screams hipster, lol.
2 cars make a sounds i really like, these STI and the 2L VW golf engines(my golf is straight pipe), such great sounds!
"There's the rub, yup, yup, umph" hahaha Awesome videos lately, enjoyed the BRZ and bagged Audi episodes.
