- Overview
When an SUV delivers as crisp a driving experience as the 2022 Hyundai Kona, it's hard to get hung up on the usual anti-crossover sentiment-so we won't. The subcompact Kona is, simply put, a great package that blends carlike on-road behavior with bold styling, a dose of practicality, and an elevated driving position. Two four-cylinder engines are offered: a 2.0-liter four, which is admittedly pretty poky, and a more desirable turbocharged 1.6-liter four that delivers a lot more punch. Sticking to Hyundai's value-forward approach, the Kona comes with a long list of standard features which only grows as you move through the more expensive trims-the top few of which get downright posh. The Kona is one of the smaller offerings in the subcompact SUV segment, so it gives up cargo and passenger space to some of its larger rivals, but we think the trade-off for the Hyundai's compact package and fun-to-drive nature more than makes up for those shortcomings
What's New for 2022?
A lot, actually. Hyundai has given the Kona a refreshed exterior and interior for 2022, complete with a new front-end treatment that's even more dramatic than the 2021 model. New wheel designs, updated exterior lighting elements, a new wide-mouth grille, and faux front and rear skid plates are all new styling features. Inside, the Kona receives a redesigned dashboard and a few new optional goodies, including a new digital gauge display, wireless smartphone charging, and heated rear seats. The standard 7.0-inch infotainment touchscreen has grown to a larger 8.0-inch diameter, and a new 10.3-inch unit is now available as an upgrade. On top of all these changes, a sporty N Line trim has been added to the lineup with a 195-hp version of the turbocharged 1.6-liter engine; no word yet on the performance-oriented N model that is expected soon.

Let's journey together!
Great job on this one AT! Mapping Kenya's steps towards embracing EVs one video at a time. 👊🏾👏🏿👏🏿
Intro kali sana by the GOAT himself Josh Muuo 👌🏿👏🏿👏🏿
The electric car is the answer with the petrol prices which will never come down. I just wish the price wasn't as high. Ksh 8m for a Hyundai is a crazy considering they sell the same car in the US for ksh 2.6m for the most expensive model na zote zinajengwa Korea. Gava is killing us with duties and import taxes.
Correction. At 4:56 the reported car's range of 484KM, the gentleman says it can take you to Mombasa and probably back to Voi. Nairobi to Mombasa is about that 484 KM (of course depending on where in Nairobi you start measuring from). Mombasa to Voi on the other hand is about 159KM.
Thanks for that observation.
Noticed that too. No chance it can cover that distance with single charge under normal driving conditions
Great stuff man. Also The Hyundai sales manager is an excellent car reviewer. Matt Watson vibes 🙌🏿
Awesome stuff AT and Josh big up
Shout-out to Josh Muuo. Great videography as always man.
Wow the Kona is already in Kenya, That's awesome!
With the continuously rising fuel prices, this is the way to go.
With our electricity prices ?? Unless you can charge them at your office they you are oky
@@theemclane4037 electricity is way cheaper that fuel here.
@@theemclane4037 You can't compare Electricity with fuel. Fuel is waaay expensive.
Electricity is cheaper for the car.
Anytime you post I just click cos I know👌🏾
Thank you
The specs are awesome
Ready to like and watch another amazing video from Afrikan Traveler.
am here like never thanks AT for sharing
Intro kali😍
Hee, its finally here. i like the pick speed, hand breaking system. Noma sana! How much again !
the music is banging!!!! I do agree that it would be quite beneficial in Kenya due to the high cost of fuel and traffic jams, more so than even developed countries
It's our boy again
Back again 🔥🔥more ev's in the road good to see the government is encouraging it by reducing the tax import .hope to see more charging ports in kenya sio nairobi pekee ...
Like the content
That's great
I hope to see thesame as well across the country
Kwanza along the highways
Raising the bar higher. Big up AT on new content daily on this channel
Loving the EV, i could feel the magic
I hope one day I shall be able to drive one, fuel prices are just going up here.
This is nice, but we really want the Ioniq 5
Another Bang 🔥🎬
Always appriciate Bro

Kama Kawa.
Amazing E.V cost saving in long run ..its worth noting that it has pedestrian and bike sensors in front and back..for safety. hope it will be embraced by Kenyans
Great to see electric car coming up
Interesting!
Kenya need to do something in terms of ev import duty. This car brand new will cost you 3.6m in UK before the government incentive of 0.5m.
I fail to understand how in kenya we pay the gvt to buy EVs while in other countries they are given large incentives.
Bang after bang after Bang!!!!! Lets make this channel hit 100K subscribers. The most patriotic channel
Let's push it to 100k 🙌🙌
I never understand why Cars are overpriced in Kenya. I just got a new 2022 Kona for $23,000 that’s roughly Kshs. 2.5m while back home it costs more than 3X that amount. Also the EV one costs less than $35,000.
Our currency is weaker now, then add shipping cost and duties then you will understand why its that expensive.
Nice..into song great, whats the name of the song?

Government to now give tax incentives on purchase of electric vehicles to help the mwanainchi afford. Great content BTW.
5:53 well I hope the GOK, transport stakeholders are taking notes taxis, BRTs the ball is in your court EVs sweet deal on board
Greetings Afrikan Traveller Wow! The Koreans (Hyundai Motors) and the Japanese Motor-Electric Companies are making a killing in Kenya. Hopefully Kenyans will make their our electric vehicles some day soon, however the challenge is liquidity for the average Kenyan. Its amazing how the western financial system works against Afrikans. Battery technology still has a ways to go as solar is the present. Thanks for sharing
Opibus electric motorbikes are also quite something.
Kenya has everything , if you work hard you can have everything just like in America
Kenyans are so rich they buy new cars at almost 3 times the value! And you wonder why we stick to 2nd hand cars. Electric and hybrid vehicles are taxed even more!
EVs and hybrid vehicles are considered to be luxury vehicles thats why they are taxed more.
It costs so much because of the Kenyan government's taxes. Actual price is almost half that amount. Your government needs to take a chill pill when it comes to taxing, especially on EVs.
Only disappointed by the hood, i was hoping it would be an additional boot
The only disadvantage of EVs is that they aren't affordable and poor charging network in our country. The cost of charging the vehicle isn't cheap either
At the moment I would choose a PHEV Toyota Prius. I am comfortable with 3 - 4L/100KM
7:35 Petrol vehicle kes 2.5m 1 lit 150kes multiply by seven days in a week. EV kes 8M kilowatt kes 27, fully charged may last a month (need clarification) for you to charge again. According to me may consider EV

8 million shillings is too expensive for this car, even in a developed country like US. That's like four times the average price of a new one in US ($19,000) and UK (£20,000). Unless you tell me Hyundai Kenya is not the original owner of its car, paying Ksh3 million on top of Msrp, paying a million for shipping, and demanding another million in profit 😒
Unasahau kitu Kaka,
Those are manufactured kwao, Hyundai hapa (caetano) just market ata si assembling
@@brianmungai2401 I understand that. My concern is, since it's their car, they are not buying it from Hyundai Korea at MSRP. How much does shipping cost? Taxes? Profit?
The price is so high....8M that is a new Rangerover
@@DesmondKarani duties for a 2022 vehicle are so high given that EVs are considered luxury cars in our country.
Wooow made in kenya🇰🇪👌👌👌👌

Tesla x long-range has a range of 530-600km
The price is a bit steep..in comparison with the competition unless you're talking about kenyan taxes.
Buda..inaweza
Thank you
This is nice, now it's up to the energy ministry to lower the cost of power 🔋 , we need to a green sustainable city
8m it's too expensive here in gulf labda 1.5m ksh🙄
They should incorporate solar energy
Yes, and use the energy in making rapid EV charging stations along the major highways.
This is good news electrical cars are much easier to maintain then they internal gas combustion engine as an electrical engine only has 11 moving parts compared to that of gasoline engine more then 100 moving parts.Biggest challenge is the reliability of the Battery as you know from your cell phone experience batteries tend to let you down at the worst moments
EV batteries are designed differently from cell phone batteries, this also depends on your charging habits as rapid charging degrades the battery faster.
back again
Like we never left
Good. We need to get rid of petrol engines. Hopefully, the Govt won't tax electricity to death too.
Such cars should be tax free
@@AfrikanTraveller unfortunately they are taxed higher than ICE vehicles.
@@Samuel_O_O then we will shift to solar
This exact model of Kona EV costs 2.5 million Rupees in India, which is 3.7 million Kenya Shillings. The reason it costs more than 2x the price in Kenya is due to Kenyan government taxes, import duties. All EVs imports should be zero rated to encourage wider adoption of Electric Vehicles.
Am not hating, i actually love the car but tbh i don't see how having a car this highly priced is helping in going green, more than 1/2 of car owners here can't afford it, also those who can are rich so they probably don't feel the niche that much when the fuel price goes up, we need solutions that are helpful for everyone who lives on earth coz the environment doesn't care whether you're rich or poor
your description is kinda bloated man! nice vid though.
Can a Ugandan be able to buy this car and bring it here in Kampala??
Of course.
hio intro ni kali sana
Karibu sana
This would be a good product at the right price. Imagine paying 8m for something that needs to charge for 19hrs... Compare this to the tucson which you'll get for say half the price brand new from the same show room and has an average combined fuel consumption of about 12km/l, you'll need to drive this car for about 340,000km to even out the cost assuming everything else constant and the electricity is free for the Kona over that period... EVs are wonderful products but they must truly make financial sense as much as environmental sense to compete in such a market.
You only need to charge it once in 485km and if you drive 30km each day you only need to charge it twice a month if the range is as stated.
The First New...????? Hio explanation umeforce sana🤣 but isorait
Good start though insanely over priced. Kona EV is about half the cost in other markets. 8M can get you a new Model S or Rivian
Not in Kenya though.
The Model S and Rivian would be over 15M for sure.
The price is ripoff. A google search shows a similar car goes for about 3M in other markets.
Did he say this Hyundai is slightly faster than a Tesla? Which Tesla? 🤔🤔
I came for this. Waongo bana. They don't know their facts.
No more chicken and egg problem. The cars are have started landing; hoping for quick rollout of EV charging infrastructure
Shida ni price...Gava itakuwa inacharge to much VAT
If government can reduce the tax on import of EVs to Kenya to zero for 10 years. The market will thrive and we’ll see more Teslas in the market.
They cant even reduce it to zero for a week, you are asking for ten yrs.
the car cost 37$ and u guys are selling it 80k$,,,,tesla model 3 costs 40k$ ehh they want make more money than the cost of the car
This car can take fast chargers
i love it though it kinda overpriced
Very expensive....Aiiih!!!8M is too much for that car
The most uneconomical machines of the 21rst century, electric vehicles. I would stick with gas engines or hybrid cars.
nice car but no thank you
Not Worth 8 million
Kenya tunafinywa...Hii gari inacost 3.4 Million most places, then hizo gava inapatia 26% incentaves of the price.. Kenya ni 8M...ukifanya maths ni better kubuy gari ya diesel or veturu..Hii gari kuitengeneza you need certified techs si omugumecanico...so it's expensive...Hii global warming ni activist talking point ya 1st world...Kenya 16 year olds don't go to high sch with cars..so let's burn cheap coal...Sorry Felas
Your speaking like a fool, even if kenyans 16 yrs olds don't go to school with cars global warming affects the whole world doesn't discriminate.
Soo cheap!!!!!
