      @@auditorynerd9138 Taking this specific car i.e VW e-golf, the cost of a new battery is 23,500 US Dollars, which would translate to 3,718,875 Kenyan Shillings...and that's minus shipping and import duty fees. Keep in mind that most electric vehicles will need a replacement at around the ten year mark although this may vary depending on how regularly the car is used. You should also note that as you keep using the car, the battery's full capacity keeps reducing just like it happens with phones so that as the years pass, each full charge will keep giving you less and less kilometers of range.

    How much does it cost to charge and how many times do you have to charge for a 1000 km journey?

    • @RoyOdhiambo
      @RoyOdhiambo Рік тому

      On a full charge, the most maxed out version of the electric car (VW e-Golf), has a range of 280 miles given optimum conditions i.e weather etc... so we can assume a real world range of about 250km on a full charge. That would mean charging it at least four times for a 1000km trip. As for how much it costs to charge, the battery capacity of this specific vehicle is 35.8 KWh. The current rate of electricity from Kenya power to consumers is about 33.33 Shs per KWh. That means to fully charge it using ordinary home power would cost you 1,198 Shs or 1,200 Shs if rounded off. Multiply the 1,200 by 4 for the full 1000km journey and you have an electricity cost of 4,800 Shs. The catch however is that if you are going to charge it using ordinary home power, each charging session will last at least 6 hours. So in your trip you'll have to factor in like 24 hours that will be spent charging the car.

      @@AfrikanTravellerI saw the dash showing 8km per khw. Kisumu to Nrb is 341 km. 341 / 8 = 42 kWh. Assuming domestic KPLC cost per kWh is KES 31. 42 kWh x 31 = KES 1,302 for one way trip. My car (6 cylinder bmw) does 12.8 km/l when driving economically, or 8.8 when pressing. It would consume 26 liters when driving light, or 39 liters when pressing. Costing 5,070 or 7,605 @ 195 per liter. ICE is only useful for overlanding, that is exploring remote towns etc… Only drawbacks for battery EV is charger network, charging speed and replacing the battery at the end of its life. Imagine if you found another ev charging in Nakuru. I think hydrogen will be the future. Fast fill up, not heavy, no need to haul all that battery weight. Just need to figure economical hydrogen production.

    EVs have not reached a point to compete with fuel cars, How much did you pay for the electricity plus the time you wasted recharging?? The only breakthrough is if storage technologies advance to a level the same as fuel cars. Still some work left to be done. Aluminium Air Batteries could be the perfect solution.

      Your statement might be true in Kenya but for NIO (an ev automaker) in China has battery swap stations that give you a fully charged battery in less than 3 minutes, in other parts of the world there are level 3 fast chargers that take a significantly shorter time to recharge.
      The hyundai kona electric has claimed range of 400km which would enable you to drive from Nairobi to Kisumu without making a charging stop.
      Most importantly is that Kenya is still far behind in the ev transition in comparison to other western counrties.

    Waiting for the numbers. The flexibility one has with normal fuel engines is already lost. My full tank will take me to Mombasa or Kisumu non stop. With thia one i have to waste 3 hours stopping somewhere to recharge. There 's a reason why the EV's have never gained traction in the markets, even where they are made.

    Something odd about all these electric mobility companies and marketers in Kenya.
    You all speak a lot but stop shy of answering the most important questions for potential customers and viewers..
    BEI! PESA, PRICES COST....Money!
    You post and advertize all over the place and hide or go mum on the most crucial information.
    I have seen it with the e bike companies...
    It is tiring to listen to these fellows go on and on and on without giving the bottomline.
    Why the secrecy?
