    Polyester
    Polyester is a synthetic petroleum-based fibre, and is therefore a non-renewable carbon-intensive resource. Nearly 70 million barrels of oil are used each year to make polyester around the world, which is now the most commonly used fiber in making clothes.

    According to a study published in November’s Environmental Science and Technology, nearly 2,000 polyester fibers can shake loose from a single piece of clothing in the wash and, unfortunately, those tiny plastic bits are making their way into the ocean.
    Charles Moore, founder of the Algalita Marine Research Foundation, which focuses on plastics in the marine system, says he’s been concerned about microplastics from all sources

    I genuinely don’t understand why this isn’t trending and doesn’t have millions of views I feel like no one even knows what polyester even is!?!

    thanks for this video! Very informative, and easy to understand. What really sucks is that athletic clothes is often made with polyester blends, and because you sweat wearing it, those microplastics are going to be washed in washing machines more often! yikes!

      Polyester doesn't make you sweat. Sweating is a function of the human body and it's temperature control mechanism. What some polyester fabrics don't do well, is wicking the moisture away. It depends on the structure of the filaments in the yarn and the weave of the fabric. Cotton is comfortable. The fibres absorb moisture, but they also hold on to it for hours, and they lose heat hundreds of times more quickly when wet... which is why sportswear isn't made of cotton.

      You could argue that cotton isn't renewable either since it destroys ecosystems and requires over 10x more water,

    The breathability or lack thereof correlates more to the density of the weave and than the polyester itself, I’ll tighter weave means less breathability/air permeability

    • @BeateMyburgh
      @BeateMyburgh  3 роки тому

      I completely agree that wovens vs knits vs interlock knit vs jersey knits makes a difference in the breathability of almost all fabrics and textiles. However, synthetics do not score high on the breathability scale in comparison to their counterparts.

    I love to wear Suits out of Polyester fabrics. As you say: does not wrinkle to much, easy to clean. Not to sweat in them, i am wearing shirts and underwear out of cotton. That solves the problem of sweating. Cleaning is easy: i leave suits on, when having a shower, or have a nice relaxing foamy spa in them on sundays.
    They dry easy look like new afterwards and smells good (comes from bathing lotion). I remember commercials in TV beginning 1960s, that you can even jump in the swimming pool in these Suit and have a swimm (what i´m frequently doeing). Tons of fun ....

      Try smartwool underwear, quite pricey but worth it. Try them for a week and you won’t go back to cotton

      I see it is a new sports fabric. Yes they will share many properties, but seems like an improved version.

      I don't like wearing it and I know some people with sensitive skin also have trouble wearing it. This Doctor also talks about natural fibers over synthetic for people with sensitive skin: ua-cam.com/video/915JRfH-Jsk/v-deo.html
