Health Risks for textile workers
In addition to being hazardous to the environment, acrylic fabric may also be hazardous to your health. As early as 1979, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) became concerned that residual monomers in acrylic fabric may be carcinogenic. This suspicion has since been substantiated by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; every time your skin comes into contact with acrylic fibers, your chances of developing cancer increase.
On its own, acrylic fabric is highly flammable, which means it must be treated with toxic flame retardants to avoid the possibility of grievously injuring the wearer. The types of flame retardants used are called organophosphates, and these toxic compounds gradually accumulate in the body.
Exposure to synthetic fibers in general during the production process increases breast cancer rates in postmenopausal women. Synthetic fibers like acrylonitrile also serve as breeding grounds for bacteria, which could cause skin conditions and general discomfort.

Like polyester and nylon, acrylic fabric is hydrophobic - meaning it repels water. This can lead to bacteria growth in the fabric which may compromise the structure and cause odor. It also means that acrylic fabric is more likely to create static electricity and cling. Acrylic fabric is also flammable and can be extremely difficult to extinguish, whereas wool is extremely difficult to light.
Because of these properties, acrylic is not a good material for clothes. It is usually blended with natural wool fibers or used to mimic wool not for its properties, but for manufacturers to save money on cost of materials.

Acrylic fiber is made from the polymer polyacrylonitrile. Polyacrolonitrile is a flammable, colorless liquid that is created from polypropylene. The EPA found that inhaling polyacrylonitrile gives the victim similar symptoms to cyanide poisoning. In fact, when exposed to polyacrylonitrile, our bodies metabolize the chemical into cyanide. This metabolization can take place after exposure to the chemical through skin contact, ingestion, or inhalation. Polyacrylonitrile is also cited as a potential cancer hazard.

Didn't realise acrylic was this bad. I'll never buy it again. I do prefer cotton & bamboo yarns when crocheting but now and again I'll buy some very soft fluffy faux fur yarn in winter. Shan't be doing it again though. Thanks for this video, you explained things so well and gave the why's to many questions I had. You deserve way more subscribers ❤.

I hate the static that acrylic creates...which I get static shocks a lot. So yeah, due to this, I try to avoid 100% acrylic clothes. There's so many clothes made with acrylic. Natural fiber feels so much better and it's so much better for the environment. I especially love linen.

I bought a sweater from Shein. I wore the sweater to work. As the office started getting hot, my skin immediately broke out and I had an allergic reaction. My whole arms, chest was inflamed. I went home took a Benadryl and thought I was in the clear until I woke up with swollen eyes. I were to work still and the allergic reaction came back. Acrylic fabric is horrible! I never had an issue like this before.
I bought a sweater for my 6 month old baby, it is made of %100 acrylic so I started searching information about SHEIN clothes and I’m never buying again! Thank God my baby only used it once and nothing bad happened to her

This video was very helpful, unfortunately not everyone affords wool and cashmere clothing, because of this many of us buy clothing made out of cheeper materials :(. For example in my country i find rarely stores which sell wool and cashmere and just relaying on online purchases, without feeling and checking if the measurements fit is also not good. But i am getting more and more interested in what materials are used in the clothing industry and these videos are very helpfull and informative. Thank you very much 😊❤.

people have started banning plastic bags because theyre non-recyclable, but i remember pewdiepie talking about how plastic bags were supposed to be helpful for the environment, because you can re-use them. paper bags you can only use once or twice, and it takes a much larger amount of water to produce them, according to him. could there be a similar comparison between acrylic/natural fibers, where acrylic is so durable in comparison, that it actually benefits the environment, since natural fibers degrade faster? like, lets say you knit a shopping bag out of acrylic yarn and one out of cotton yarn. if the acrylic bag lasts three or five times (im not sure, but for example) as long as the cotton one does, isn't that a positive for the environment? obviously acrylic is inferior for clothing.

That is a very important question to ask, but also a difficult one to answer.
It comes down to this: Buying less (consuming less). Stop the use of single use goods that contributes to volume in landfills. Using what we have for as long as we can. Not disposing of things that can be recycled, repurposed or reused in a different way. When buying new things, buying something that will stand the test of time.
When it comes to making a decision on what material to use:
Yes, we definitely need to take all things into consideration when deciding what type of textile or material is necessary for the product we want to produce. The factors we need to take into consideration is different for each type of product (eg. clothing, grocery bags & backpacks will require different consideration). Different product = different decision making process.
Carrier bags:
A sturdy bag that can be used hundreds or even thousands of times is definitely the most sustainable choice, therefore it cannot be made out of paper or a thin plastic. A a thicker cotton tote bag or strong re-useable plastic bag will be best.
* the cotton bag is machine washable (that will be the pro)
* the plastic reusable bag will be lighter in weight (that will be the pro)
Handbag:
The best will be to have a material that can last for a really long time. It is also important that the user or buyer of the bag is committed to using the back for a long period of time if it is made out of a durable material. It doesn't help if the material is eco-friendly but it's only used for one week and then thrown away. Repurposing nylon from fishing-nets can be used in the production of handbags, after the bag is manufactured the same counts (the user needs to use it for a long period of time).
Acrylic:
As mentioned in the video acrylic is very bad for the environment. From what I've seen most acrylic items doesn't look good after wearing it for more than one season. Most consumers will get rid of something if it doesn't look good anymore. Therefore an item made out of acrylic Will most likely get thrown out after wearing it for one season. A high quality jumper made out of natural fibres (when washed and taken care of properly) will last for longer period of time and will therefore be worn for numerous seasons; when it gets to a point where it is worn-out the item is biodegradable.

what is your idea of cotton as compared to acrylic or wool for beanies?
I'd stick with natural fibers, having to take of a garment because you get too hot is an inconvenience.

Does it get shrink if we wash it with hot water?
Hi Padma. Yes it does shirk when washed with hot water. I recommended following the washing instructions on the item carefully. All synthetic fibers and fabrics are prone to shrinkage when exposed to heat.
A hot washer or dryer can shrink or melt these fabrics, rendering them unwearable. For best results, read labels and line dry any item that may shrink.

I love wool but after watching how they shear the sheep and obtain merino wool, Ive started using acrylic. Sheep and all animals need to be treated with love and compassion.

what about mixed acrylic and wool for a black sweater? Is it bad for your health?
Personally, I do not like acrylic, and I am not in a position to scientifically say if acrylic is good or bad for your health. I still wear sweaters and cardigans with acrylic in them.
It will usually be less than 20% of the garment's fabric blend.
Acrylic destroys the wool! Avoid black color because it makes you sweat and bacteria that makes the sweat stink loves polyester and acrylic. I live in tropic and I have nothing that is of black color. It just makes you hot 🥵 in the wrong way and sweat more.

I don't like acrylic, but washing it won't change it. I prefer natural fibers. It is your choice.
@@BeateMyburgh i have went through all my clothing and I’m going to be selling all of the synthetic materials at a flea market and donating some of it too. Slowly working on building my wardrobe back up with natural materials! I ordered hemp leggings earlier today! So excited!
