This was one the best comparison videos I've ever seen on hardware vs software. Preamps are something that just can't be emulated. That hardware unit made a huge difference on the mix. It's night and day. Thank you for sharing.
@@HomeRecordingMadeEasy lol..yea, no doubt. Maybe soon you can do a vid showing if more affordable hardware pre-amps, or something like my old Mackie 14 channel board would give the same, or even similar results.
hey man..hope you are well and safe...I am excited because I bought my 1st piece of hardware, a warm audio 1073 pre and eq...man it is just super! Thx again for all you do
I’ve been re-amping through a Neve 1073N, soft synths, piano, raw guitar tracks, BFD drum samples, and the improvement is astonishing. Spatially, extra girth/body, warmth, detail, everything magically sitting better in mix, everything sounding more real. Whatever Neve do with these things, it makes me very happy.
Thanks for another video and demo. The hardware definitely brings more depth, presence, and perceived volume increase ( compression) . I’ll be ordering a pair of 1073s this week! I’m really interested in seeing your journey into hybrid; I’m starting on the same path. This vid is one the best I’ve seem / heard where the comparison is so distinguishable . The plug-in wasn’t bad either but having the choice, the plug-in would go into semi-retirement.
@@HomeRecordingMadeEasy do you also have a video tutorial of how you ran it through the hardware back into the DAW? Does one 1073 neve pre amp take care of one stereo channel or do you need 2 mono mic pres for one stereo channel?
Sounds fantastic and the hardware sounds so much more open and wide, with a more dimensional mix through hardware. I just got my AMS Neve 1073 LB and EQ 500 series racks and I have the Slate and UAD 1073’s. I think the UAD is slightly better than Slate as they more closely model the transformers, but the hardware is way better. Now to test my API channel strips from CAPI using the same test you just did!
The stereo field is better on the hardware and you can feel the dimension on the sound, also the definition increases. I love this video! I really want it to confirm with a second pair of ears what I found some time ago. I initially try this approach trying to get a less harsh sound of a horns virtual instrument that I like a lot and then by doing that I start noticing an improvement on the sound as well, then I took it to the next level by trying it on all my tracks.. I love hybrid mixing I couldn't have a studio without the digital world, there is a lot of digital tools and effects that it will cost thousands of dollars in the analog domain. In my experience, analog makes a bigger impact during tracking than over mixing. However, I respect the engineers that decides to work in the box, I'm not trying to say which approach is better, I'm just mentioning the facts as you can hear in this video.
I use an SSL SiX in my studio and "reamp" tracks through it and it's like others have said, you can get there with plugins but I find that it's faster to get there just throwing it through the hardware.
Great! I do the same with my SiX. It's great for taming s's naturally and creating pretty closed to finished audio. I don't use plugins anymore unless I want special effects.
Hey David! Even on youtube, the difference is pretty apparent on my Audeze LCD-X headphones. I love the sense of space and openness you managed to get on the hardware Neve pres tracks. I'm still happy with what the plugins bring to the game but, at least in this demo, hardware wins!
I definitely hear the difference the 1073 has more depth going through the hardware adds a nice natural compression. Would love to see you do a video on how to re record the tracks in studio one I have a couple of preamps I would like to run my tracks through what a nice difference. Thanks for the video
Cool video. I like this topic as I also run hybrid set up. I also recently built an outboard analog chain. I use Apollo and UAD2 Plug-ins, which are great btw, that lead me to wanting to go with some hardware on the input side initially. I do this stuff for fun so I didn't whip out the cash for the real deal so I went with Warm Audio clones of Neve 1073 EQ, UA 1176LN and Pultec Tube EQ. That basically is the path with an SM-57 on various amp/cabs going straight into the 1073. I like it a lot, I cannot compare the clones to the original hardware but I can say this WA stuff on its own right sounds great. I want another of their Pultec for stereo mixing. I have one of those Samson 48 pt patch bays that I'll use to easily patch around I/O's. I like having physical knobs to turn, think we all do or we wouldn't have control surfaces.
Listening to this on my tv and it's still like night and day to me, one sounds like a recording while the other sounds like a record. It gels on the rerecord. Question did you run the tracks though the line part of the 1073? Speaks volumes for the output transformer on the line output if so. I presume you did as it doesn't sound darker which I would have thought would be the case if the line was massively padded before hit a mic level.
Killer review man! 🤘 I am blown away by the differences as well. Everything just has more room to sit balanced together and that depth/phatness from to the kick & snare I love from the hardware How long did it take you to print all 15 tracks back into Studio?
@@HomeRecordingMadeEasy Cool that’s what I was hoping you’d say. I’ve toy’d with the idea of just getting 4 of those Neve’s in the 500 series for the drums and then just re-printing the rest of the tracks like you did. Sounds like it might be a way to save a few bucks and have a cool hybrid recording/mixing process!
@@HomeRecordingMadeEasy I know this is an older post, but I'm wondering will I need a dual channel 73 to achieve what you've done here? Wonderful! Sounded better with the 1073 pre! You can kind of fake those results with plugins (tape, compressor) but why do the extra work when you can have mix ready tracks thanks to analogue tracking :)
Dave do you think running a pair mic preamps on your mix bus is a good idea? I am curious if you have change your position. I am thinking about doing this and wanted your opinion
I wonder if running the master output to a pair of this neve preamps would have the same effect than run each track at the time. That would be much faster
I'm listening trough my cell phone speaker. HW tracks seem already mixed. I will listen in my studio. But right now I listen a huge difference even in my phone
On my headphones the HW Neve tracks seem brighter and kind of less transients beeing captured. Which is great. They feel a bit naturally compressed. Maybe the transformers do that. I could say the preamp tracks would be easier and faster to mix. Great video!
The difference is very apparent, even on cellphone speakers. Only slight flaw in your test is your raw tracks themselves since these are tracks already recorded with (I'm assuming) a lower qaulity preamp, maybe stock preamp on a interface. Which is an already limited audio source. If you really want to hear what they do, use a Y split cable so you can split the microphone signal, one to a stock preamp on the interface, and the other to the Neve preamp going into the line input of your interface. Do that on multiple sources and you should see an even bigger difference.
The difference was clear on youtube. Interesting test. Makes me want to try this with my Rupert Neve 5012 with silk engaged. What do you think? I also wonder what the difference would be with the UAD Neves? Thanks
Also been trying this type of thing with the SSL fusion, using the vintage drivevand engaging the transformers. The fusion has many applications beyond the mixbus.
The hardware by all comparison was far better. The kick became more pronounced, rounder and fuller. The vocals and guitar were made smooth and the bass played nicer with the drums. The difference was so big that i did wanted to do the same test running audio thru my 1073 SPX and i don't see that difference, why? is the 500 series better?
More and more people are going totally itb. To each their own but for me, I'm very hybrid. Lots of hardware eq's, pre's, compressors. Not cause I want to spend the money but the issues I have itb are solved by adding hardware. Anyway, clear difference what the Neve added to the sound. Once you get to the point you have enough analog to tweak the sounds in context, there will be a bigger difference.
