Came down a few weeks ago. Not too much luck at perdido pass. Three or four 11 inch Mangroves and several small blues. Rained all but 2 days that I was there. Hope to see you get a monster soon!!!
Back in the early 70s fishing on a drift boat out of Ft Lauderdale we got into a pack of 20 to 30 pound blues! We loaded up on them. Made the newspaper because of the sizes we caught.
Awesome day out there. We had a run of those big blues over on the NE coast of FL not that long ago. What an experience. Keep it going. Love the content.
It’s pretty rare when those big Atlantic blues round Florida and come up into the northern gulf. It was years ago when those 12 and 14 pound blues were being caught. Most of them were being caught in deep water. We encountered them taking our mangoes from us they fought like Amberjacks. Also ran into some 7 pounders at AL point one September. All muscle!
We ran into those on the central Florida east coast for about 2 weeks before Easter. First ones caught us by surprise and we were unprepared and they easily bit through 30 lb leader in our spoons. Switched to 50 and 60 pound leader and big mullet chunks and pulled in 7 or 8 over a few times out. Big treat for those of use to catching 2.5 lb blues as big ones.
Hey Matthew, looks like you had a great morning of fishing. We used to catch blues off Cape Cod on top water. We had a Dasterly Danny that had a big 90 degree lip that would really shoot the water. The blues would come up so hard and knock it out of the water. Man you just can't have too much fun.😊
I can't remember the exact year, but one Summer back in the late 80's to early 90's time frame (probably before you were born 😉) Monster Blue Fish were being caught. In OBAL. We caught many from Romar Beach (in OBAL). We used cut bait & several were weighed in the 15 to 20 pound range. That size Blue was unheard of in our area of the Gulf at that time. They were the size of those caught on the East Coast. It only lasted that one year & then it was back to our normal size Alabama Blue. Enjoyed your video, thank you. 👍🏼😎
Mathew, we will be down in Navarre Beach next week. I will be surf fishing and hope to see some of those big Blues running over there. I am also going to try and drive over to visit your incredible store. Thanks for sticking with your channel, you are always very informative.
Very different blue fishing that I grew up with in New Jersey. The monsters were usually about 20 miles offshore where there was a drop off. You could catch your sizes off the beach. They love shiny metal . You’d always see birds working as well.
lol, We were down 2nd week of may and I did the exact same thing losing a nice spoon on a cast. I went to really chuck it and when I casted it I accidentally closed my bail halfway through my cast. I watched in agony as my brand new spoon I had just bought at your store flew away! Good thing I had bought a couple of them though!
Sometimes when you cast and the lure just keeps going, you have a cracked ceramic inner ring on the tip eye. Hard to see ; check by running your fingernail around the inside of the tip eye.
When you get that 30" blue, you'll know it right away because that drag will definitely be singing. Poppers work well for the larger bluefish if the surf is more manageable.
Dude you own a tackle store bring more than one bright shiny spoon😂. I grew up surf fishing for big blues. Can’t go wrong with a hopkins with a feathered treble hook on the end.
First year after the 3 fish limit was put in place for blues in the northeast. Before that there was no limit in them. Pretty sure that's why there are so many bigger ones around now
40 +years ago at the point in Cape Point , NC, south of the lighthouse is where I learned to surf fish. Hundreds of trucks would back up to the ocean on the beach. When the bluefish blitz came in, you could not pull them in fast enough and they were huge! Absolute blast to watch. No limits.
You got me started with throwing spoons into the surf. I fish navarre and okaloosa, but i haven't been having any luck recently. Not even lady fish. Any additional tips?
By the way, I want to add that I know how much you like to catch fish on artificials the large pencil popper I have caught black tips and spinners over 50 lb on that would probably make a great video.
Does most of your plug throwing rods have 20 pound braid just curious really really like all your videos. It keeps me going in between my trips keep up the good work.
Good morning Beach Bum I just want to ask you something have you ever used a diamond jig the ice surface a lot and I use smaller Diamond jigs with rubber tubing most likely a Green Tubing I always get my blue fish that way
I grew up in North Carolina and used to fish Cape Hatteras on a regular basis. We got 20 30 lb blues up there. You want to catch the big ones? Try a large pencil popper 3 to 4 oz. A big gator spoon 3 to 4 oz. You can throw it a mile big baits big fish. And if you ever get into him, I know how much you like. Jack corvall the blues are the same way up there. We call them choppers for obvious reasons. And be careful because they will bite you on purpose and their teeth interlock just like a piranha.
An old timer on a pier told me that a bluefish will follow you with its eyes and try biting you if given the opportunity. I've caught thousands in my day, and don't doubt it. They are kinda mean.
I live in Texas, that water must be really deep from the shore, we could never fish like that. I have to swim across the 5ft cut out to the next sandbar just a cast into a good spot, I usually have out 200 yards plus of line. I don't see any cars on the beach, where I live you can drive, how do you access? That looks like so much fun just being able to roll up and cast from the shore and catch fish I just unbelievable to me
You never do the line call out when you hook a big fish anymore. “Oh that’s a big hit! 15lb mono!” It was the fishing version of you calling out your favorite nba player when shooting hoops as a kid.
Love your content man honestly it’s getting me back out there after being pretty depressed with life. I live locally and would love to come in to buy my first surf rod any recommendations on something that won’t break the bank?
@@BamaBeachBum I appreciate the response. I’ll definitely be stopping by soon! That sounds like a price we can afford right now. Just know you’re an inspiration and seeing you and your family warms my heart. I have a little family here in foley and pray to have a life of happiness like yours. Thanks brotha
Those blue fish you caught will hit a ridiculously large bait if retrieved quickly. The better fish you caught would easily hit a Big Mac or large stick bait.
Watching from Arizona, I want to get started again. I used to deep sea fish with my father and grandfather as well as pier fish. How much should I expect to pay for above average surf fishing rig? Rod and reel.
blues tend to school with similar sized blue because they tend to eat each other. I'm not saying the comment below isn't true but the world record is around 30lbs. my biggest from land is just over 17lbs. they're all fun to fight!!
My favorite style of beach fishing from my favorite Bama Beach Bum 🍻
Thanks for the video's It is my second year surf fishing and you help me a lot by putting out all those good videos

Whole east coast has huge blues this spring. Amazing how the fish cycles work.
Love how you talk to the fish. “Come on, Come on”!!!

Crazy how your channel has grown. I remember watching back in the sub 10k days. Keep grinding!

😮 Even up North, we've been getting abnormally.Large ones in the shallows on the beach.

Mathew looks huge in shadow. Bruce banner esc. Great video. Keep the beach scenes coming

Gonna be there at beach bum store Friday or Saturday for Ohio. Looking forward to seeing store and fishing the gulf!
Awesome! We look forward to seeing you come by!
Bluefish some of the best fighting pound for pound, when you get into the 20-pounder range you wind up taking a break every 2 fish... LOL
Thanks for staying a little more hardcore than your other two buddies 😊

That's why I will not buy rods with ceramic rings anymore. They do nothing but fall out or break your line.
The q-tip works really well for finding cracks in the ceramic guides
@@frankn4618 Oh, Right, it snags up those little hairs. Great tip, thanks.

This is one of your best.
As always. Really love your shore fishing vids!!!
What type of clarkspoon were you using?
Glad you showed the spoon break. It happens to me and I’s very disappointing 🤬
Really big Chopper Bluefish on the Outer Banks of NC also this year.

What size leader do you typically use with your es lures? I had 20lb fluoro but got broke off a couple times. Not sure what I should move up to.
30 lb B and 50 lb M

How many ounces is this lure? The Clark spoon
thanks for another great video
Caught a monster off the beach Tuesday on a mullet chunk. Didn't get a measure but it was close to 30 inches I imagine. Strong fish.
BTW, I love all the beach bum content
If you want a bigger fish you need a bigger lure!! Roberts lure, Ranger works well!
Blues don't get "Mad" they are born Mad. makes em' fun to target
Look like some pretty good actions on the blue fish I'll be crossing my fingers at you get your 30 inch or this year best of luck
