    The Sheerline is so underrated. Definitely a worthwhile project. I completely get your passion for it given you've reconnected with a car from your past. Go for it. Looking forward to the results.

      They seem to be more popular in Australia than over here, no idea why!
      A much better looking car than the princess in my humble opinion.
      I'm hoping to start stripping it in the next couple of weeks and getting some fresh metal welded in to replace the rot and fresh air.

    Don’t strip the diff most had that problem which was due to hardening problems in manufacture. The ambulance fleet at Norwich had these chassis and many of them had this problem. My Father owned a saloon which gave us wonderful transport. It towed a caravan on holiday for several years and towed it from rest up a 1:5 hill and was in top by the time we reached the crest. The car weighed 2 1/4 tons and the caravan a ton. The engine was used by British Road Services on their big parcel vans and your chances of of it blowing up are limited. The pistons had a bowl head and the version used by Jensen in their 541R had increased compression by converting them to flat top. The Stromberg carburettor was extremely complicated for its day. The Smiths Jackall system had a tendency to crack on the pump casting. It was a wonderful car to ride in and I recall Father holding it in a skid on a slippery Norfolk road which was impressive. In its day it was listed as a Heavy Motor Car and you required a special license to drive it as it was over two tons. This form of restriction was later removed from heavy cars but my original licence entitled me to drive it. It was great fun!

      I'd rather not strip the duff, but it's making a truly horrible grinding noise that can only be pinion gear and / or crown wheel, and I can't see it getting any better..
      The engines are fairly bullet proof yeah, I've got one in my fg ambulance.
      But, since I'm going to replace the seals and gaskets, I may aswell check the valve seats, bores, crank, and well, all of it, I've for shells, pistons, nearly a complete set of valves, etc.
      Gearbox I think will be fine with some bearings, I can't find any synchro sets for it, but I'm not too bothered by that, it's so low geared I don't think it'll spend long in any other gear bar top..
      Didn't realise they needed a special licence! Strange isn't it, compared to a modern car it's really not very big at all, but it feels massive!

    A lot of work ahead, but a nice old car once done. On the plus side, its in better nick than the Titanic! 😂😂

    You MUST restore it properly forget what the others say. My dad had one in the 70s. He paid a 10a for it and was it great condition. Absolutely wonderful cars. More expensive now lol .

      @adventuresinrust1644  Місяць тому

      It's too far gone not to restore now, but I do want to do as sympathetic a restoration as possible, it's lived a life, and is a fairly unique survivor over here, so I'd like to make it looked like a well preserved cat rather than making it look new

    The boot floor to inner wheel arch connection (or lack thereof) looks to be the same as with the Saxo track car that Kitch purchased recently. 🤔

      Tis a bit yeah! Although this thing has the advantage of the suspension not being being attached to it! I'm sure Kitch will make it sound soon enough

    Sounds like you got a lot of get up and go. You committed now buying expensive parts. Hope it all works out. Looking forward to seeing body come off. Have a good week. 👍👍

    • @adventuresinrust1644

      Most of my get up and go for up and left years ago! But I am very keen to get this done.
      Just trundling up the lane in it is incredibly god fun.
      Even in its current state.
      If things settle down with other commitments soon I'll be pulling this apart in the coming weeks. It would be ideal if I can get the body welded up and in epoxy whilst the weather is agreeable

      @@adventuresinrust1644 yep the weather makes a big difference when grinding and priming. No flash rust. Sounds like you have to do some 11 he days. Eat sleep and drink it. I’ll pray to the tin gods for ya. Hope it goes back together. Good luck 👍👍

    Good luck and congratulations on taking on such a big project! I absolutely understand the appeal. This will be a great car! Always loved them, though they’re known for overheating in warmer climates. Cheers

      It's worse than I thought it would be, but I'm sure it's doable.
      The owners forum tell me that a rebuilt radiator, an electric cooling fan and fitting a modern stat with the hot water bypass blanked stops the over heating issues, all of which I'll do, it does get rather hot when idling in hot weather, but it runs pretty much spot on if I keep it moving.

  • @chrisdorrell1

    That digital clock thing should be there? Lol
    The beeping I reckon is an overdrive someone has fitted perhaps

    • @adventuresinrust1644
      @adventuresinrust1644  Місяць тому +1

      The lcd display is a rev counter Mr. Webb added. It's nicely done but will be removed if I can find a replacement speedo face.
      There's no overdrive fitted, but there are numerous wires hanging out everywhere so I suspect that has something to do with it

    Can’t you send carb off to a rebuild company. The revamp it to original. Don’t look like much to it. Check manifold has no cracks in it and have surface planed. Maybe find a overdrive unit for gearing. Talk to axle rebuild shop. See what they advise. I had a Dodge D200 truck that was high geared. Bigger rear tyres help. Maybe two speed axle. Got to get on the Dog and Bone

    • @adventuresinrust1644
      @adventuresinrust1644  2 місяці тому +1

      Possibly, although the owners forum tells me the carbs are Unobtanium as are parts like the float. Dunno yet, I'll look into it, but if I can't do anything with it, I'm tempted to chuck an su on it, or maybe the triple su setup the A135 had..
      I'd like to keep the rear axle standard if I can, pretty sure the local boys can metal spray the pinion and crown wheel if needed

      @@adventuresinrust1644 Jay leno has a old Fire truck. He fitted a electric motor brake in between gearbox and prop. Changed his whole braking system for stopping all that weight. Think there’s a episode on it. Could be cool if there’s some after market cheap deal available. I just did 10.000 klms in a Mercedes’ 508 all over Europe. Don’t take much to smoke them drum brakes coming down the Italian Alps. Just a thought if you pulling body. Good access.

      @Doggymcdoggy664 I think fitting an electro retarder might be slight overkill, but I might fit a servo.
