    Any info on how to spot if the rack is about to shit the bed? Because I think my C5 still has the original rack at 240000km and on some days the steering is rather heavy for a short period. (Especially if it’s hot as hell). Not a real issue though and only sometimes. Has been like that since I owned the car (3-4 years).

    • @adventuresinrust1644
      @adventuresinrust1644 11 днів тому

      Occasional heaviness is more likely the pump or fluid generally. Lds does degrade despite it being 'for life'. Only way to tell really is have a good look at the pinion shaft, ideally through the footwell. If the shaft is very rusty, at some point it'll destroy the seal and leak. Might be tomorrow, might be in 10 years.

      The original owner was an electronics engineer, and I'm told a very good one. To be fair, i remember this car back from the early 80s on, and whilst it always looked 'used' it was kept pretty well up together, I think maintenance went out the window after it passed on from him though. It's certainly had some 'interesting' repairs...

      @@andrewmalyon5699 very kind to say thanks. They are rather dull videos, but all of mine are.. I'll be entirely honest, I have no idea how I'm going to approach this yet. If it was a French car from the 80s or 90s I'd know exactly what to do, but this is somewhat out of my comfort zone. I know how I'd like to do it, but I just don't have the space, facilities or ability to make a jig, attach body to it and make it good. So I'll wing it and hope for the best. At this stage I don't think I can make it any worse.. I'm kinda OK with it, because I knew it was horrific before I bought it. I think if I'd expected better and saw this I'd have cried, but, even though it is still worse than I thought, it's not that much worse, so I'm not losing sleep over it, as to whether I have the ability to actually make it a decent car, well, probably not, but I'll chip away at it and see how it goes...

    Out of curiousity, if you jacked/blocked both sides of the body at the back at the same time, would that help the body to start returning to its original form as the "memory" in the metal tries to return to its original shape (you can help this by applying some localised heat to distorted areas and quenching with wet rags to reduce any stretching ----- I had this on a cattle feeder wagon last week where the rotor chopper drum housing was distorted and used this method of tensioning the distorted area then applying the oxy to the bent metal to restore shape and quench the areas I didnt want to move, if that makes sense).

    • @adventuresinrust1644
      @adventuresinrust1644 14 днів тому

      @@stevehill4615 that's definitely in the plan. Although I want to retain as much of the outer skin of the car as possible, but the areas in the boot floor are all going, so I want to cut out the worst of it, Jack the rear end to somewhere about where I think it should be, weld some metal in to give it at least some structure bad see how it looks thereafter.. But I'm not remotely a pro, never touched a sheerline before and the chances of getting it wrong are high I imagine!

    Quality of metal in 1951 could have been a bad mix. Maybe wasn’t expecting car to last 73 years. Guess I could read up on metals in 51. Could have been all kinds of trash in the mix. We didn’t have a lot of metal after the war. could have come from a commonwealth country. I think Austin had there own steel plant. My Dad would be known. He just passed away. He was a Black Country man. Had contracts to fix roofs in BL . Jaguar. Jenson. Aston. Land Rover. He worked at the steel mills in his twenty’s. Round oak steel works. Maybe metal in weldable.

    The thing to remember with these Sheerlines is that all they are, are trucks with posh bodywork and if you happy to work on buses and trucks then you should have no problem with this. as for parts, try to think laterally and if you need things like bearings or seals, search online using the part numbers. Things like brake linings or clutch plates are always repairable or able to be relined (have you seen Car SOS?!). These sorts of projects are what superglue was made for!!!

      You're quite right, it really is a truck with posh, if rusty, bodywork. There's only a couple of seals I've yet to get, and bearings should be easy once I have the numbers. However, the interior is far beyond my skill set, so I'm not even going to try, same with the wood bits, but the rest should be OK. As has been the recurring theme in the last year, it's lack of time that's the biggest issue at the moment, but I'm hoping to get some more hours in directly. Brake linings isn't an issue, and I have 2 new clutch friction plates on stock. So that's fine.

    New subscriber to your channel. Love the Sheerline and looking forward to its restoration. Those rubbers for the wing to body are available there used on Moggies and there must be loads of mechanicals that were used on other Austins of that era.

      Thought the moggy piping was smaller, but it's a good call, it is available, so that makes it easy! Mechanically it's pretty much identical to the A135, the engine is from an Austin k truck. Electrically it's very period lucas, not sure about the box but I'd assume that also came from a lorry. I've amassed a fair bit of mechanical parts, not quite everything, yet, it I was surprised at what I could find. The front suspension bushes are the only things I cannot find, but I reckon I can make some bushes for it, if powerflex can do it, how hard can it be! Thanks for subscribing, apologies in advance on the swearing and dullness!
