I have seen a hundred of these sled videos, and yours is by far the best one period! The narration and explaination is so easy to follow. Nicely done man!
I built this 6 months ago. Dude, you are amazing! I use it all the time. I would never go back to not having a sled. The modular design allows me to make all sorts of custom jigs for my work. Using your sled has made my shop a ton of cash. Best $15 I spent in my shop. Thanks a ton man. I appreciate it.
@@NickFerry Love it man! I made a smaller version of the same thing for ease of use. Its a monster of a sled when ya just need to cut small parts. Its holding up well, cuts true and has made my table saw the most used tool in my shop. The only thing I would change is making it out of half inch rather than 3/4. Its a bit heavy. Use the 3/4 for the front and rear fence and half inch for the base and miter/spline addition.
Nick Ferry WOW, great functional and GOOD looking sled there Nick. Love the dual function. Almost make me wish we had saws with miter slots over here, just to have an excuse to make this. And BTW you put some great effort in the details on this video. It also came out great. Must have take some time with all the camera setups, and editing.
Nick Ferry Hey Nick if your pc is running slow or certain apps run slow... Think about investing in a Solid State drive... Know as ssd drive. I picked one up for my laptop for 80... 256 gb... It's amazingly fast.
Nick, you have pleasantly amazed this OLD Marine. I just into woodworking at 69 years old after surviving 2 massive heart attacks and stage 4 throat cancer. I needed something to get me off the easy chair and woodworking fit the bill. I will buy your plan and build your sled. Keep up the good work. Semper Fi!
Wow, sounds like you’ve had some monumental situations to deal with - or should I say, improvise, adapt & overcome - sounds like you are one hell of a Marine that won’t quit - glad you liked my design - let me know if you have any questions building it - Semper Fi!
This is the best design I've ever seen and I love how straight forward you laid this out. I'm definitely going to use this for the design of my next sled. Thanks!
I’ve been wood working leisurely for a decade and this video showed me that I’m in kindergarten. Wow this guy needs to be designing tools and jigs.....
I love the comments about the spray paint! You didn't change your tone at all... would have been easy to miss your joke! That's my kind of humor! Thanks!
Man, that was a great video! I've seen many sled builds, but this was PACKED full of really good inforation. Didn't even seem like an 18 min video! That was the BEST way I've seen the 5 cut check explained! Seriously great work! I think I'm going to build another for myself now! That extra space and the attachments tracks open a lot of ideas.
Thanks J - I'm glad you liked it - it was a tough edit - both of my hard drives filled up in the middle of it - made it rather tough - I'm glad it's done
Your explanation of the five cut fence alignment calculations is absolutely the best on you tube!!! Thank you very much!! Very nice craftsmanship. Clean precise and well thought out!
Dude! Not only is that a brilliant design, with awesome attention to detail, but this is one of the best video tutorials I have ever watched! Is all of the aluminium hardware by Kreg?
Not only is this the most well detailed description of a sled, I’d say that the angle of the video capture as well as the details provided are head and shoulders above the many “sled vids” out there. Thanks Nick!
Well done. A well thought out sled! The calibration technique was sweet. I appreciate the pace of the video. It is terse and to the point. One criticism I have of other videos is that they take to long to get to the point!
I really like the combo you did here. I find I am using my sled and separate miter jig a lot but having them work together would make things a lot easier, thanks for the video and great idea Nick :)
FINALLY made the sled. Absolutely the best ever. I was so lucky in that after one adjustment it was perfect to ten thousand. Will use it daily. Can't wait to make the accessories
Nick Ferry, hi. I wonder if you'd travel all the way to my country & home town, for a month or two, to teach a class of senior wood working women (mostly anyway)??? And to help us understand the building of the table saw jig, the way you have done it. Nice!! Really nice. I'm following your videos. No builds yet though. Bless up.
Great video... loved the Math, my last Job before retirement was in Engineering. I look for videos each morning to have my coffee and learn a new woodworking technic... Excellent job!
Much appreciated Eric - glad to have ya here - coffee & snacks are in back and make sure to “knock before you walk”, as the bathroom lock is in need of repair
I am new here. Recently I made a miter jig and about to make my 1st cross cut sled.I have seen a lot and I must say I like your the best. The versatility of it is amazing. GREAT JOB.
Learned the 5 cut method in H.S., we built a sled for the shop table saw at the school!!! It paid off greatly to be friends with my instructor cause..that sled was something only him and I worked on!!! That was 30 yrs ago... First time since then I`ve seen it explained in such detail!!! Great vid. man! I`ve subbed and am excited to see more of your work!!!
I really enjoyed the video. I just got done making my sled and was curious about the miter sled. you answered all of my questions so now I am ready to make that too. Thank you.
My pleasure - I use the miter portion more in this video - Ⓕ How To Make A Shadow Box (ep59) ua-cam.com/video/jFxRIjqJPlc/v-deo.html - let me know if you have questions
Great video. Great sled. Ferry commented at the end that he oversized the sled to provide for building shop cabinets. I took a completely different approach. After building two shops and all the cabinetry in them I got tired of that. For my third shop I went to a nearby Habitat for Humanity Restore and found a whole suite of floor and wall-mounted medical cabinets including one four-foot wide, six-drawer unit. They were way cheap, well-built and strong. All I added were new bases for the floor units to bring them up to the height I wanted and new, solid wood tops which I attached to two or more cabinets to gain as much as a ten-foot X 32" or 36" working surface. I don't have a sled, but not for long. Thank you Nick Ferry.
Made a sled loosely fashioned after yours. I like it! First 5 cut test revealed one and a half thousands off. Tested a second time with the same result. I left it alone!
I too have been wanting /needing a better sled. In 25years I've only made them hastily and out of necessity, with intentions of future upgrade. Thanks for properly inspiring me . I'll soon have a Nick Ferry Super Deluxe Ultra Max + Premium model , with miter upgrade.👍 Great job on video too.
I've made my sled a few years ago and it's served me well. I really like your build and think its time to build a new one mirroring yours. great job, thank you
I built one of these but I simply aligned the 3/4 board of my sled with my rip fence when gluing it to the miter slot runners. By doing so, I ended up only 2 thousandths of an inch difference in a 20-inch board using the 5 cut method. That is the precision of a SawStop table saw for ya!
Nick , if I had that sled I wouldn't know whether to cut wood with it or fly it. no, seriously, that is a beautiful sled and you did it so effortlessly .
Finally, an instructional video that uses metal parts for better utility. I understand there are purists out there, but rather than spend so much time getting a wood or HDPE to make miter bars and T-tracks, I would rather get aluminum ones that are virtually guaranteed to fit perfectly and with added flexibility for a tight slot fit. Most UA-cam videos do not include the T-track on the top of the backside stop; I think this is an invaluable addition so “real” stops can be used more precisely and solidly. Making a sled like this is getting on the heavy side. One UA-camr did something kinda unique: drill a bunch of 2" or whatever holes in the sled and sandwiched that with laminate (Formica, WilsonArt, etc.) on the top and bottom. That (is said to) dramatically reduces the sled’s weight; likely it did. Laminate sliding across the table saw bed is just as smooth as waxing the bottom of the sled. One thing I did learn is using a table saw to cut thru aluminum. I never considered using my table saw as such; typically using my miter saw with for that. So, searching other videos on that shows that a table saw does / can cut better, cleaner cuts that I get on my miter saw (and what is shown in the video). Additionally, most of the non-ferrous blades cut plastic very nicely, something for which I have always used my laser engraver. With a table saw blade, I could more easily cut thick acrylic with a blade and also use it for other non-laserable plastic (lexan, polycarbonate, etc.). Overall, this is a GREAT video. Thanks, and keep that saw dust flying…
Thanks much - glad you could get some ideas - cutting non-ferrous metal on the table saw is really handy - I've made a ton of .080 & .040 aluminum signs and have always cut them on the table saw - as well as a bunch of aluminum extrusions - growing up around cars, I've always called the holes drilled for weight, speed holes - I did that in my Kreg jig video - I just omitted the laminate - using aluminum for the miter bars, I wouldn't have it any other way - not having to worry about wood expanding and contracting & HDPE wearing out with no adjustability is important to me - and cutting sheets of composite with a high shear angle, high tooth count blade is really nice as well - it leaves it clean enough to where a quick flame polish is all that's needed to end up with completely finished edge - glad you extolled most of the nuances to the sled - I had put a great deal of thought into it
I have been watching table saw sled videos all night for the past 4 1/2- 5 hours. And by far this is the best one I have ever seen. I will be making one just like this, your explanation of the five cut method is spot-on. In my playlists I have a category called "shop talk" and I was going to put only what I felt was the best sled I could find into that category and yours is it. The Wood Whisper's sled was a very close 2nd, but all the fine details and removable miteres did it for me. Great job and keep up the awesome work.
Much appreciated - sounds like you e been doing your research - make sure to check out the tenoning jig I have for it as well - nickferry.com/2016/05/how-to-make-a-spline-and-tenon-jig-ep67/
this is why I like your channel. You and I are very similar in that, it doesn't matter if no one will ever see it, you want it to look and feel good. It's not a part of every makers DNA to put so much effort into making something you are 100% proud of regardless of it's use or function. This is the kind of craftsman I strive to be.
thank you kindly - I appreciate you saying so - I do have my moments of just having to get things done but if at all possible, I like to take the time to make everything look good as well - thanks again!
Yes please, I would like to see a series on sleds and how to build them. In particular, aluminum extension framing for 3D printers isn't very expensive and I would love to see an inexpensive but really like cross-cut sled made out of thinner plywood and aluminum to minimize the weight and maximize functionality.
I've built this sled a few years back but my home made Oak sliders have warped and there glued!! So buddy I'm going to do it again but better! Thanks Nick!!
Apologies if I've said this before, but great job! This is how I want mine to be built. I have bookmarked your video for when I get around to it. I don't even have a table saw yet. Baby steps.
So I've been working with wood in construction for about 34 years now, and I have to say I have built my share of sleds and jigs, but even I couldn't give a better explanation of the process than the one you've given. A truly magnificent job.
Bf just bought the plans yesterday and got all the supplies. We're working on building it today! Thanks for all the hard work putting together such awesome plans!
5/19/2019 USA Grandpa Bill: Nick, you're one of the greats in woodworking, and you select the finest, such as Baltic Birch, but right now that's $70 for a 4'x8' sheet. I am a bit overwhelmed by the prices of our lumber and in many cases the deplorable shape it comes in like at a big box store at times: treated lumber so drenched it warps in the sun, tire tracks across the pine boards, etc. You and others have expensive shops with beautiful arrays of wonderful tools while many of us yet have a rusty saw and a pair of pliers. It's like watching a prince in his castle while scrubbing the hovel floor, yearning through dreams of a world beyond. I'm glad you, and Jay and April and others are here giving us the best you've got. I just wish the lumber was priced lower, along with pharmaceuticals. You're doing a great job. Thank you for all your work.
Much appreciated - you’re probably looking at birch plywood if it’s coming in a 4x8 sheet - you can get Baltic birch in 4x8 sheets but fairly rare - Baltic typically comes in 5x5 sheets - so id start by investigating that further - I hear you on the dimensional lumber at big box stores - same here for the most part - as for the tools, I started in the craft over 25 years ago and what you see is the culmination of that - my first tool was a handsaw and drill - just grew from there - to further your analogy, it is best to be scrubbing hovel floors with a straight head than dirtying them with a crooked one

Do you sell it?!
ive never heard something explained so well . fantastic video looking forward to making my own. cant wait to check out the rest of your videos
I LOVE THIS PLAN. WOULD LIKE TO BUY A D.V.R OF THIS PLAN. HOW MUCH WOULD IT COST. IF YOU CAN PLEASE REPLY.
Also wanted to mention that I shared this video with a buddy of mine that is also into woodworking :-)
Nice. The most important tool in the workshop.
Thanks
5 years later and your sled is still one of the neatest out there. re-watching just for nostalgia haha
Haha thanks - I’m very proud of my design and I use it almost every time I’m out in the shop

Thanks much - glad you could get some ideas - cutting non-ferrous metal on the table saw is really handy - I've made a ton of .080 & .040 aluminum signs and have always cut them on the table saw - as well as a bunch of aluminum extrusions - growing up around cars, I've always called the holes drilled for weight, speed holes - I did that in my Kreg jig video - I just omitted the laminate - using aluminum for the miter bars, I wouldn't have it any other way - not having to worry about wood expanding and contracting & HDPE wearing out with no adjustability is important to me - and cutting sheets of composite with a high shear angle, high tooth count blade is really nice as well - it leaves it clean enough to where a quick flame polish is all that's needed to end up with completely finished edge - glad you extolled most of the nuances to the sled - I had put a great deal of thought into it
Should have seen this video before I built mine. Your's is very nice. Thank you for taking the time to make and share this with us.
No problem - glad you liked it!
Being new to woodworking and looking through a bunch of videos I feel like you explained everything that I was confused about from other videos.
Great to hear - I have my moments where it comes across clear sometimes
It is very satisfying watching your videos. The projects are very precisely. You got a new member.
awesome thanks - glad to have you here!
Your sled and Kings Fine Woodworking's "extreme" sled are pretty much the two nicest sleds I've seen. Well done!
Thank you I’m very proud of my original design
Why am I just finding this guy now? Excellent camera angles, description, and MATH!

thanks - glad to have you here
Nice work bro, this is the best I have seen built, thanks for sharing your skill, I got a lot out of watching your video.
I appreciate that - it means a ton to me to hear when you can pick up a couples things from my stuff - 👊🏼✌🏼
There's a good reason why this video has almost 3-million views.
Thank you for sharing your design and tutorial.
Cheers
Thanks - I’m proud of how it turned out
I've built this sled a few years back but my home made Oak sliders have warped and there glued!! So buddy I'm going to do it again but better! Thanks Nick!!
Let me know how round two goes
thats the best sled ive ever seen, great job
Much appreciated - glad you liked it
Awesome explanation on the 5 cut squaring method. I had to add this video to my reference watch list
thanks
Apologies if I've said this before, but great job! This is how I want mine to be built. I have bookmarked your video for when I get around to it. I don't even have a table saw yet. Baby steps.
I know the waiting feeling - it's a fun hobby though
Thank you Nick that was the best explanation of the 5 cut method I ever saw. You got new subscriber here.
Welcome - Glad to have you here
So I've been working with wood in construction for about 34 years now, and I have to say I have built my share of sleds and jigs, but even I couldn't give a better explanation of the process than the one you've given. A truly magnificent job.
much appreciated - I'm really happy with the sled - the fact that so many folks watched and got into the whole thing is hard for me to believe
Bf just bought the plans yesterday and got all the supplies. We're working on building it today! Thanks for all the hard work putting together such awesome plans!
No problem - thank you - let me know how it goes for you
5/19/2019 USA Grandpa Bill: Nick, you're one of the greats in woodworking, and you select the finest, such as Baltic Birch, but right now that's $70 for a 4'x8' sheet.
Has to be the best built I’ve seen. Nice job.
Thank you kindly
Excellent build. Appreciate the attention to detail and great communication. Two thumbs up!
Thanks Robert - glad you liked it!
