  • Time for a new Cross Cut Sled!
My old sled was the best thing I ever built for my shop, but there was one big problem with it… it was too big! So I decided to create a smaller sled that has the ability to turn into a larger sled with an extension wing.
While I was at it, I decided to add a few more features, the ability to cut 45 degree bevels and an adjustable fence to cut any angle you need!

I just had my niece over my shop she’s 19 and has bad anxiety. I was trying to explain to her that woodworking and welding and all those things are not just for guys. I’m really trying to get her into finding a hobby with her hands. That being said, I am going to share this channel with her because this woman is amazing. If you're not worried about precision, what's the point of building a sled anyway? Just use the miter guage then. The whole point of building and using a sled this awesome is so that you can make precision cuts and elevate your craftsmanship.

@@bobhenry8262 for starters, you don't hve to worry about tiny offcuts. I'm in the relatively newbacious category but I had to make a bunch of tiny offcuts recently and it was then I knew I needed a sled. Any sled would be better than what I have. So there you go, a reason for having a sled even if it doesn't improve your accuracy. Now hopefully I didn't same something blatantly clueless lol

THANK YOU SO MUCH, Tamar, for sharing your skills, experience, know-how, innovation, and just plain hard work with us! You are my NEW INSPIRATION!
My first saw was a jigsaw, but it wasn't enough to satisfy my fascination with wood, especially after watching shows like This Old House and The New Yankee Workshop back in the late 90's. I was fascinated with angles and bevels (still am), and wanted to do so much more (still do).
My woodworking hobby started back in 2000 - I bought a table saw, miter saw, plunge router...and dabbled at some projects. Over the years, I have built a floor-to-ceiling wall unit for my family room, a desk for a friend, an art station for myself, and numerous other projects, besides doing many home improvement projects.
But now that I am newly RETIRED, I am turning the end of my garage into my "perfect" workshop - perfect for me, anyway. As a 4 foot 11 inch woman, I have to be creative in order to keep SAFETY in mind (like storing my wood stock low rather than where it is now - up on shelves).
Anyway, I am DELIGHTED to have found your videos, for you explain things so well and clearly, along with the many helpful links. Your innovation sense and enthusiasm are catchy - they get me thinking about the things I want to make, and the many JIGS I can't wait to build (you are so adept at coming up with jigs that are masterpieces of design and function!). I also am purchasing many of the tools you use and recommend, for as we all know, there's a right tool for every job. I too think the stop from Jonathan Katz-Moses is AWESOME!!!
Please know that I now end my day by watching at least one, if not more, of your videos, and am taking notes on all of the neat techniques I am learning. So THANK YOU AGAIN! I hope every WOMAN within the reach of the Internet watches your videos to LEARN AND APPRECIATE that they, too, can DESIGN - BUILD - CREATE - INSPIRE.

You do have to spend some time setting the saw up... blade, fence, etc. But once done, the saw is great. Fairly compact which is Nice ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxXh-4_3-ZT1fFWP91ZV7iVqzElr0lEb-a I did get an Incra Miter Gauge which takes some setup as well. The stock miter gauge can be adjusted in the miter slot with a little painter's tape... this tightens up the side to side play a lot.

Thanks for the great video. I am a new viewer and have really enjoyed watching.
I think the reason you had difficulty with the back fence was that you added a second set of threaded inserts into the two oak back rails. This acts to deflect the two surfaces by however much error in clocking exists between the two joined threaded inserts, rather than tightening them together. For a 1/4-20 fastener, this can be as much as 0.050", nearly 1/16" (or zero if they are clocked just right.) If you used clearance holes into the oak pieces, the alignment of the extension rail to the primary rail should be much better, because the pieces would be pulled together. Still, really great video, thanks for the effort!

    • @salterclan
      @salterclan 3 роки тому +4

That's funny, I was just watching the video for the first time and got through the first 12 minutes and saw that issue and jumped to the comments to see if it was fixed. I guess not. I have run into this issue many times with other peoples work. You can only have one tightening surface. Even if they are clocked right it isn't going to tighten which is why your clearance idea makes the most sense.

It's still a great fence. I made a Dado fence literally just two days ago and now I'm wondering if I should have just used my Router. Oh well, the fence is created, but I haven't made a nice custom Fence like this one. Quite a lot of these features will be in mine. Great job!

Really nice sled, and finally, I see one with the T-track for a stop.
I am really impressed with this design.
A little food for thought on your extension, and primarily the spline.
    The biscuits are brilliant
Extending the T-track across in the dato is brilliant.
The spline, as you mentioned could have been a single, however, I would have made it wider.
When you used those 1/4-20 T-bolts, you took away most of the strength they had, even collectively. I'm sure you are getting a pretty big stress riser right where the holes are, but as it is, that really shouldn't see much stress. IF you do see that spring at all, I can pretty much guarantee that is why
Also, a threaded insert mated to a threaded insert typically doesn't work out that well. I'm glad it did for you.
When I make a joint like that (Typically in metal) I will use the single threaded insert (Usually a Keensert or Helicoil), a bushing for a through hole, and a shoulder screw..which of course complicates things tremendously, but now you are sure to get the spline to clamp tightly against the fence.
I also absolutely LOVE the Bevel feature you have introduced here. I have been toying around with some similar ideas as well. I like the 2 track method, I have been wrapped around idea of an axle...probably a shoulder screw, bushing and threaded insert.......
Once again, my hat is off to you. You have some serious smarts as well as talent here!!
EDIT: The Bevel I was referring to above is really the Tapered Fence feature.
The Bevel is ALSO genious. My current sled has three or four Kerfs. One at zero, one at 22.5, one at 30, one at 45 lol
I have the same saw you have, so this should go a long ways in helping me.

One thing I think might warrant changing is having the inserts on the oak battens on the extension. Once the locking rod engages in the "oak" insert, it will hold the oak away form the insert on the main fence. An oversized hole will allow the nut to pinch the two parts together.

As a 66 year old woman who had to wait until 35 years old to take shop classes because girls weren’t allowed in them in high school, it’s wonderful to enjoy your videos which are so competent. Also you are using some useful small tools that I realize I don’t have, like your small metal triangle and your jig kit. For years I had to save plastic threaded knobs from equipment that failed because they weren’t readily available. I’m going to get started today on your versatile sled. I also love your safety glasses. I need to get a prescription pair.

@@3x3CustomTamar It already has! And hilariously, of all my 6 children, it’s the girls who do woodworking. My middle daughter has surprised me, with almost no tools. She has repaired a dollhouse used for therapy sessions, built a cornhole game for a relative who supports her, and is now building herself a bedside end table. All this from a daughter who was tired of parents (both engineers) who were incapable of not getting excited about even demonstrating how a siphon works to empty a kiddie pool. She swore she would never do math again. But the skills were there and she has discovered it’s fun. Another daughter is building furniture all the time and a third is an engineer at NASA working propulsion for the Space Station. Occasionally we rear them right.

I like to make boxes, and what sold me is (not shown) the ability to flip stock to the other face at the angled edge, and put a spline groove in the angled box side/end. I've looked at all sorts of spline sleds to hold box sides that have an angle cut. But, here's a fully controllable solution that adds one more functionality to an already brilliant design. Thanks for this.

You are also quite gifted at explaining things in a way that is easy to understand. It's also an amazing design that I will work my own version of soon. I will say that when I saw what you did with your little router jig, my eyes almost popped out of my head. I was quite puzzled by the piano hinge until I saw you use it. Thank you for the post and I will be watching plenty more of your work from now on.

What a great design. In regard to using only one slider, why not make a detachable left slider by adding pins/dowels that protrude into matching holes in the bottom of the base. That way the left slider can be pulled of the base when you want to use the bevel feature.
Another observation I had of late. Probably there are a number of us not-so-involved DIYers who, like me, only have a job-site table saw. Mine comes with a built-in extension on the right side of the blade. So, if I want to add an extension to the sled, I'll do it on the right side.

So a year and a half later, you mentioned in your Q&A video how your table saw is no longer made. I have a DeWalt saw that I just bought and the measurements between the blade and the miter slots is likely a bit different, such that my sled was too narrow to use on left side for 45 degree bevels. But not to worry. While I sat down with graph paper and pencil to adapt this design from scratch, while I was waiting for new T-Track to arrive, I decided to try and salvage this one. Using biscuits, I widened the sled base and fence to accommodate the wider dimension between the miter tracks and everything should be fine. Live and learn, and I enjoyed the critical thinking it took to troubleshoot the issue as I’m getting to know my tools better. Thanks for the inspiration.

Thanks for the informative video. For starters, you make it look easy and give me inspiration. Home Depot is my favorite home improvement store.... love them!!!!
I'm making a self-watering raised garden bed, about 30" X 60". Unfortunately, I have no electricity in my backyard and use a cordless circular and cordless miter saw. When cutting large sheets of plywood, the cuts are off considerably. l am using all left overall and donated recycled wood( used ) due to my budget. A cordless table saw would solve my plywood accuracy cuts and help make my much-needed 2 X 4's from the donated old 2 X 6s and 2 X 8s. I can pull all together with the circular saw but notice significant gaps when I join the 4 X 4s for initial outside frames. Overall, all these flaws may be solved with a Dewalt cordless table saw since I do have a Dewalt set of 9 and 6-amp batteries. Oh, well, I hope to get a cordless table saw one day, but did I mention....budget problems...ha, ha!!!😁🤣
