I have only ever power shifted a few times. I had an 81 kz750 with a frozen clutch, and that was the only way to test drive it. It seems easier to power shift if you rev high and with pressure on the shift lever, you let off the throttle entirely and the lever will usually move. Thanks for showing the aftermath!
I have an 82 Yamaha xs400 that I treat like shit and fix when it breaks. I could probly remove the clutch lever and never notice at this point 😂 I know I'm messing it up but meh it's my ratbike
I’m glad I know this. I used to to clutchless shifting all the time, not constantly but like try to do it from time to time because my guts tells me that it is not a good idea, because if it’s designed to clutchless shift then it wouldn’t include a clutch kit to begin with. Thanks for this affirmation.
I appreciate this video man. I was taught power shifting when i got my first bike and I quickly decided it was not good. I feel like doing that for a couple weeks has caused some serious problems with my transmission. I'm scared to even know what's going on in there. I'm hoping the problem isn't the transmission, but it doesn't seem to be the clutch. It has a clanking noise accelerating in first and second gear, and slightly in third, and mostly under load while accelerating and the clutch is not engaged.
I only have issues with 4th gear sometimes it will engage properly sometimes it wont. It wont slip out of gear it will just feel like a delayed shift. Every other gear engages perfectly it's only 4th I have issues with. The bike is a 2024 honda cb125f my daily bike i dont know what's causing this to happen but I'm starting to worry that it may be damaged in some way.
I wish you could work on my 2007 Honda CR450R Transmission. It shifts just fine but make a strange noise every time I shift. When the bike is off and I shift through the gears I don’t hear anything.
Why is it than when I use a quick-shifter that it upshifts perfectly smooth sometimes and other times, not so much? The same goes for the downshifting with the auto-blipper, sometimes smooth and other times not so smooth but even more often. Why is that? The bike has been like this from the start (new) and I have noticed that other bikes of the same make and model are exactly the same way. Nothing is grinding but it doesn't make me feel good when the shift seems like it's a harder feeling/sounding up or downshift. It makes me feel like I should just not use the quick-shifter and auto-auto-blipper and go back to full-time clutch shifting. I don't use these features very often but still, I don't like what it's doing and makes me feel like it could eventually cause me problems in the transmission. Wdyt?
Power shifting, are you meaning clutchless ?? Gearboxes have always been a weak point for me. Not that Ive had problems and needed to work on them. However this was a good vid for me for a better understanding of how they work. Thank you Cody.
power shifting is shifting while you're on the throttle, clutchless shifting done right won't damage anything clearly, that guy didn't do a clutchless shift right he probably just slammed it into gear without letting off the throttle in between gears
My gl1800 Goldwing lost most of its transmittion a few days back. Don't know why but it was sudden and totally unexpected. I'm now pulling off and riding in 4th gear everywhere. It lost 5th first then 1st and 2nd vanished followed by 3rd earlier today. I lost neutral and also reverse just 20 minutes ago so I literally only have 4th left. I have had five gold Wings and all of them have gone the same way. Some of them lasted over 80000 miles and some of them lasted just 80,000 miles. It is going to cost me the better part of 3 1/2 g to get fixed next month
Quickshifters - what is your opinion? Obviously not on vintage bikes but starting to be more common on new higher end models. I rented 3 different bikes with quickshifters, learned to keep RPM up as the system automatically adjusts RPM for next gear, cuts spark during the time of shift to take pressure off the tranny internals. As an old-timer I was very reluctant to use a quickshifter, but found it helpful getting on the freeway.
I think they are great! I’ve installed some factory made ones in Honda’s newer bikes. Electronics can speak to each other a lot quicker then manual movement of the rider in my opinion. Especially with slipper clutches and the stuff you described I see no issues with them!
Nice information, and video, one topic you did not mention was "under-cut-gears" do you think you could touch on that part of machining/massaging gear dogs? Peace
I likely won’t make a specific video about it. But I personally would not spend money in an effort to machine away a problem that has been created which ultimately weakens structure of the gear. If the gear is obsolete and no replacement exists ever. Sure do what you want. 👍🏻
Hello, idk if i have this problem But i Will try too explain, i can go full throttle in 1st 3d 4th 5th. But not in 2nd if i go over 60% throttle in 2nd it loses power for a millisecound like it ”dies” what could it be? (450 atv 5 speed) people have said carburator problem But idk does not feel like it for me while driving it,
Will wearing the dog's cause the oil to go silvery? My 5th gear is starting to pop out. I've never used the clutch while changing gears. 13000kms on the bike
When we get in a job like this we make up a "worst case" estimate. Then we tell the customer if you are not ready to spend XX dollars we don't want to start.
i have a question so i have a 08 trx450er and just had the engine rebuilt and im building pressure in my transmission all vent tubes are clear and not pinched so what could it be
I've got a 1985 kawasaki what in 1st its very still to roll the bike with the clutch in, I can barely shift into 2nd and if I shift into 3rd gear it becomes like neutral. Would that be the transmission or the clutch?
I'd want to ask if downshifting with the clutch partially pressed is a problem as big as doing it clutchless. This question comes because I'm a relative new rider and yesterday I tried to put just one finger on the left lever as I do with the other hand on the brake. I'm not 100% sure to completely disengage the transmission/engine, because I cannot control the exact amount of pression I put on it. So, in case I'd be still in the friction zone of the cluch, my gearbox is soffering? I'm asking just for the downshifting and for completeness I manually blip the throttle in the meantime because it "sound" smoother. Am I doing something wrong for my transmission? Many many thanks.
Now I have something to show people when they attempt to debate me on clutchless shifting....!!! Is the only way to replace these parts: is to split the engine case? I'm about 99.5% sure the idiot who owned the bike before me did this.....and did this in the first 5k miles of owning the bike. The bike won't go in to neutral when the bike is hot. The only was to go into neutral is to bring the rpm's up to about 2500, then it goes in pretty easy from both 1st to neutral and 2nd to neutral. When the bike is cool it goes into neutral pretty much normal. Yes....I've played with every clutch cable adjustment there is.....Haven't tried replacing clutch cable, but I'm pretty sure it is not the problem.
About to split the case on my 400ex. I have to figure out why it's popping out of 3rd gear. This was very helpful to know what kind of issues to look for
I think you just solved an issue i have with a 97 thundercat. 2nd and 3rd gear slips out and then in again under heavyload kinda like you describe @4:30 feels scary as shit, the whole bike just wobbles. Total cheap beater bike so don't really care about it but what would you estimate the cost being? or how much would you charge for the work in the video? Thanks!
*Googles what a Thundercat is… Snowmobile?! Bro I have absolutely no idea what someone would charge on that. Any transmission tear down is going to be over 1k I can’t tell you that much.
I have a honda cbr f4i every time I shift into 2 gear about 8thouand rpms it slips into neutral, do you think it might be my transmission or clutch ? Any info would be helpful
Love these details! How long should one of these last if you use the clutch and don’t hammer shift it? Is there anything in particular that you can do to not trash the gearbox?
Using the clutch a transmission will usually last the lifetime of the bike assuming no factory defects are found. Best advice of longevity is reading the owners manual. Honda is pretty specific on what gears can be shifted at which speed. ( even though usually you’re fine just be careful from 1st to second) also make sure to use good oil and change it when needed. Magnetic drain plugs increase the life of internal bearings
My 2010 Honda cbf125 sometimes pops out of 2nd gear and 3rd gear is sometimes not there, I need to let off the gas and retry and its back again.. Do you think its the shift drum screwed?

Get the rear wheel off the ground and manually shift the bike through the gears without it running. You should be able to shift cleanly in and out of all the gears while spinning the rear wheel

Cody, when I purchased my 2014 Kawasaki Ninja 300 ABS SE from the original owner 3 yrs ago, I noticed something: If I increase the RPMs past a certain amount (around 5000 RPMs) while in 1st, 2nd (and I think maybe 3rd as well), they suddenly want to jump up to redline. It feels as though the gear is actually slipping out of its position and into Neutral. In your expert opinion, what do think might be happening, and what is a good possible solution to fix this issue? Thanks!!!
Unless you're racing just use the damn clutch guys.I never believed that clutchless shifting was okay to do, probably because I understand mechanics and have mechanical sympathy
Excellent video and great explanation fo everything! That tranny certainly got destroyed! LOL Thansk so much for sharing brother and hope you're doing well!
This is far and away the best explanation out there on the topic of shifting. Period. All riders need to see this.
