Last year i got ahold of some heat treated coastal plains. It turned super red aftet the treatment. Knapped like butter and i made a couple sweet 2 inch corner notches from it.
hey! question -- I recognize that glove you are wearing. Do you work there? I I do up here in TN! Just curious! I am in southern middle tn and we have some nice chert up here...lots of greenish-black (I think hornstone) and Ft Payne. I do a lot of digging for agates up here (and hunting arrowheads) but have been dabbling more into flintknapping too, especially when I turn up nice big pieces of flint!
Question, you mention heat treating, and is the purpose to make flaking easier or to make the graininess smooth out? I'm new to all this but I intend to learn.
