I'm ashamed how you forgot to mention how the designers originally intended for the characters designs to be monochrome green, as was the screen of the original Gameboy, but after finding out that emulators would only emulate in monochrome black and white, they had to begrudgingly change their color pallets to blacks, whites, and grey's. Miamoto was notoriously upset about this decision
In fact, it has been stated several times that miamotos disdain for the change from monochrome green to monochrome black and white was because he deliberately wanted the Gameboys games to be green. After the release of donkey Kong, while originally thinking the design fine at the time, he soon grew to regret his choices when designing Mario, specifically that he never made him green. While he was able to somewhat rectify this mistake with the introduction of his very green brother Luigi, and even subtly making super Mario's design greener in the eyes, moustache, shirt, and boots, the damage had already been done. Not only due to Nintendo's strick policy against changeling characters designs out of fear of confusing consumers, but also because of Nintendo's strong association with red before Mario's introduction, making them want their flagship hero to be red, rather than to conform their company's branding to the green of Luigi, who was originally pitched as the player 1 of super Mario bros, miamoto was unable to to make Mario any greener than super Mario. However, he still tried to rectify his mistakes by making his games as Green as possible, by making the koopas, and even Bowser, as Green as he could make them, though he was unable to convince Nintendo to let him make the rest of the super Mario bros cast green. In fact, miamotos desire for yoshi to have a dinosaur companion also sprouted from this desire for more green. When it had finally came time for the Gameboy, miamoto tried to drive Nintendo into a corner, by making the games themselves green, hoping to finally be able to make Mario's design right again. However, he failed to realize that he simply made the Gameboys display green, while the games remained black and white. After this, Nintendo moved to 3d games, to prevent miamoto from forcefully alternating games color pallets again, and even went as far as to make the virtual boy a direct jab at miamotos lust for green, having made the games themselves the same red as Mario's clothes. However, miamoto ended up getting the last laugh, as the world proved that miamotos obsession for changing Mario from red to green was justified, as the overly red display dissuaded the world over, and let it die before even being a year on the market. However, Nintendo has never let miamoto change any characters designs to the objectively better green, not even the game boy characters, who were designed to be green in the first place

I heard somewhere that the reason that Miamoto was upset was because he knew a backstory: they worked in a nuclear plant that harvested uranium and got into a sort of "food fight" except the "food" was uranium and it kept getting into people's digestive system.

@@anton2fangs Original sprite? Going by Sonic 1, He'd have no mouth(or a black lined one), a paler color pallete, no shoe buckles, A more SATAM esque semi-mohawk quill style, a reflective fur texture (kinda like a thunderbolt?) and also bigger black eyes.
zelda I can see happening, sonic... ehhh, no. yes, he has had many different designs throughout the years but his original "classic" design wasn't exactly limited by hardware when it debuted so I don't see it being that interesting of a video(plus, after generations, classic sonic kinda just became his own character, and so, has had much more presence in recent years so that would just be redundant)

Maybe mega man? Kirbys still on the table since KA. Even if sonic does keep most of the spirit there are still things up to interpretation. Just not as much as Mario's.

Low-key, as goofy as they might seem to us, if those were the real designs used IRL I genuinely believe the Mario franchise would have Steen been as iconic as it is in our timeline. Which speaks volumes of your artistic talent, because it should be impossible to make some of the designs you had to adapt look good yet you pulled it off.

It’s been a year now and I only *just* realized that the way you described Mario Land implies that in this universe Nintendo released the Gameboy Color *Nine years early* in order to keep Mario the right color and yet *still* decided the rest of the game should be in black and white.
I was expecting this video to have setup and a description of the process of making the models.

As a fan of Mario & Luigi, I'm just love the duality between the brothers: with Mario's beady eyes and red and blue round body; symbolising his rollercoaster of a personality, going from calm and collective to hot-head and confident. And Luigi's wide-eyes and green and brown blocky body; making him the down to earth straight man of the group. A TRULY classic duo.

The vibe of these designs is really strange and fascinating, like your looking at a false memory or some kind of strange bootleg versions of the characters. Overall, you did great job bringing them to life with the poses.
What impresses me so much about this isn't just how convincingly but how effortlessly you captured the appeal and charm of such a huge variety of artstyles, all while staying true to the OG sprites - that takes a ridiculous level of talent!
Superstar Saga at 4:08 is my absolute favorite, Superstar Saga has the best art direction of any Mario game and you completely nailed the charm of it

All jokes aside, top-notch video! The drawings were all perfectly on-point, and really managed to both stay faultlessly faithful to the originals while also making the designs work on their own merits, but I also appreciated the funny fake quotes as a little cherry on top. Good stuff.

Real Talk though,
It's insane how most modern designs of Mario characters and species are extremely similar to their designs from SMB2 (JP) onwards. Kotabe's art inspired the modern designs of most enemies and characters, especially in the modern 2D artwork drawn by Nakaue.
It’s funny how much SMB2 gave us when we barely recognize it as a Mario game
@@TheLegend2T if you want to get real technical with it, SMB2 never even happened because it was revealed to be just a dream that Mario had one night.
Technically, same with SMB3, it’s actually a stage play put on by the characters, which is why the red curtain is drawn at the beginning, you exit stage-left into a blackness behind the scenes, and much if not all of the platforming material is bolted to the background, such as the colored rectangles, white(ish) scaffolding, ? Blocks, and so on.
So technically (or pedantically), SMB1 and SMW are Mario’s actual first two adventures 🤷🏻♂️

God, I can imagine an alternate version of Superstar Saga with giant Luigi just like in the illustrations where there's gimmicks surrounding his size like hopping on his stomach to get up to high places or bopping him around with the hammer like a giant baseball. Amazing work.

after the alternate reality of this fully set in, I found that I really, really liked that SMW Bowser Peach drawing. In fact that abomination of the original peach ended up becoming a pretty interesting character honestly. Maybe better than the peach we got?
