Yes, we should, and use taxpayer money responsibly. Both of which I do. This mic gives young talents experience with quality gear without going overboard. At this price, we can get more mics, which also improves access and equity.

I have one of these, and I can say this is like 90% of the sm58 haha If you wanna get this for even cheaper, Guitar Center sells these for $20 on black friday if i remember right.
I couldn’t find any reviews for this mic until AFTER I bought it. Glad to see you finally get around to this mic. I feel that it’s nearly the exact same as the 58 for voice work and is an amazing piece of gear for the price. I love mine.
wierd I don't like the sound or quality of the XM8500. Bought two a few years ago, 1 broke 1 doesn't sound well. I'd take this all day over it. I own a Samson CS1 and that sounds awesome for the price. Did you ever try the Q7?

In a perfect world, this would be the ubiquitous Twitch microphone, not the Blue Yeti. The SM48 might be the best entry-level microphone out there, especially if you're just starting to dip your toes into the world of XLRs.
Hi, would you recommend it over Samson Q2U and Audio Technica AT2005USB? Forget that the otehr two have both USB and XLR, i mean quality-wise for 100% speech and speech only [aka Streaming, Podcasting and Voice overs] It will be used with XLR to 3.5mm Balanced Cable [I can get unbalanced cable too but heard that Balanced are better especially for PC use] Or maybe I should invest in Blue Yeti and shove it into Foam shield so it wont pick up audio from anywhere but infront of him [yeah Chinese sell these now, its a square Condom for Condenser microhones, you shove it inside and the only hole is the one you talk to, all the otehr sides, back, rear and left/right are beyond foam, also they have nice pop filter that can be plugged into the "speaking hole"]

In my experience (former radio and TV news reporter here) it's one of the worst microphones for the price (~$120/140). Additionally, you should not be using an XLR to 3.5mm cable to run this microphone on your PC. In order for the SM48 and nearly every other XLR dynamic microphone to work properly you need a digital-to-analog converter, like the Focusrite that Bandrew uses in all of his videos.

The MXL 990 you prefer is not a fair comparison to the SM48 in several ways: 1. It's more expensive. 2. You cannot make an apples-to-apples comparison here; it's akin to comparing a Philips head screwdriver to a flat head screwdriver. They're both screwdrivers, but designed for different uses. For your average podcaster/gamer/streamer, who is not recording in a professional sound studio, condensers are simply the wrong tool to use. Condensers pick up insane amounts of ambient and room noise and in order to work as designed they need properly sound-treated rooms or professional-quality sound booths. On the flip side, dynamics - like the SM48 - are designed to eliminate a majority of non-essential off-axis noise. Dynamics are the right tool for 99% of podcasters/gamers/streamers, and the SM48 can easily fit the budget of most beginners as it costs less than most mid-level gaming headsets. While the SM48 might be too boomy on your voice it might not be for someone else. All microphones react differently to different voices. Again, the idea is to find the right tool for your job. That being said, you can easily eliminate the boominess by adding an equalizer filter to whatever recording software you're using. In the equalizer, you'll want to apply what's called a "low-cut filter" or a "high-pass filter". Different names for the same type of filter. This will cut off all of the extreme low-end frequencies (typically around 60hz or lower), which should kill all of that low-end muddiness. You can easily find myriad tutorials on how to do this here on UA-cam. Additionally, you can use the same equalizer to increase your mid or high frequencies which will further "brighten up" your mic's sound. I hope this helps!

Gamers almost always use the Blue Yeti, AT2020 or Blue Snowball, the noise rejection isn’t that different if you compare an MXL990 to even an SM58 *keep in mind an SM58 is more expensive* 2. Most people buying this microphone won’t be able to afford a clean enough preamp to drive a microphone as quiet as it is. 3. The MXL 990 can be bought for $60 *depending on what country you’re from*, it’s really not that much of a difference, and it comes with a carrying case and a shock mount.
For these handhelds, I'd love to hear them with the $5-10 foam windscreen, particularly in the plosive tests. Been waiting for an SM48 review for ages! Seemed like a great budget mic but I needed that Bandrew seal of approval before telling my friends to get it.

I bought one of the Shure SM48's wired it up for my Yaesu FT-2000 ham radio and mounted it on a desk boom and a foot switch for keying the radio. I can tell you this thing rocks! I consistently get comments on how good my audio is. Next on the list is wiring up my vintage 1953 model Shure 55s for the radio and see how it compares. Can't beat a Shure microphone. KE0SJQ
Shurely, a microphone stand adapter would be nice, just in case. Otherwise great option if you're careful with plosives. I wonder what kind of world it would be with stacks of Podcastage stickers out in the wild...
Love your videos dude 😍 I have one of these microphones and obviously a Shure SM58 to go with it and I personally think it is a very good microphone with very good "bang for buck" appeal but like yourself I did notice that "top end sizzle" you mention and it can get a little "scratchy on the ears" but still very tempting for someone on a budget, one thing I would mention is the replacement metal grilles for this model are not that easy to source when compared to the replacements for the SM58's if you live in the UK as I do they are incredibly difficult to source unless you want to pay a hefty shipping fee from abroad, when compared to replacements for the SM58 which you can buy in almost any music store so if anyone wants one of these all I can suggest is for goodness sake DO NOT DROP IT! or you will have to put up with a dented grille because the replacement grilles are different to the SM58 as they have a retaining lip on the inside to hold the microphone cartridge in the body, the same principle as the Shure 565 SD model

I had both the sm48 and sm58 and I DJ for a local rapper in my area and in those live events the difference was noticable I had to up the gain on the 48 more than the 58 now I own 2 sm58's and lost the 48 in a gig but the sm48 isn't bad

BTW, in my backyard, there are buskers who use this mic to good effect. It's about $100 here in Aussie. Buskers who have better voices tend to buy the Sennheiser 835 though. Same money, better sound.

Today i got my first dynamic mic e945 but after comparing with my at2020 i was disappointed with e945. i had focusrite solo audio interface and had gain to 90% of volume but in post when I fix both channel inside Premiere pro and inside Audition amplitude the gain level, I hear lots of ambient noise . I don't had a acoustic room for shooting my Photoshop classes. So please help ....!! what wrong I was doing or I need some extra things to fix these issue because I already had at2020 condenser mic which picks lots of noise So please help me in finding the solution in this matter.

This is a surprise! The handling noise and plosives suck, but the actual sound quality is acceptable, especially for spoken word. I'm really surprised. Question! What if you removed the grill and used the Stedman PS-101 on it? I just wonder if the tone would change in an appreciable way. For a band or small venue just starting out, this seems like a steal.
Hmmmmmmmm.That would be an interesting test. The problem I would have with that solution is it double the price you're paying and puts you in similar price range as a Blue Encore, SM58, SM57, etc. But still an interesting idea for a test... HMMMMM.

hey i mean my dad gave this mic to me cuase hes a musician and he has quit a few mics and i bought a berhinger um22 interface so ill just use this till i get somthing like a rode nt1 or a shure pg42 (jacksepticeyes old mic)
A note about frequency drop-off, I had a professor who was sick or something in the recording. Anyways, it sounded terrible and couldn't make words out easily. It was a chore just to figure out what the words were. But a little simple EQ during playback, reducing lows and boosting everything over 10k really cleaned it up. Like Night & Day. Just saying, that's a lot easier to do effectively when the mic is not fighting you by dropping the highs from the original recording.
Hi Bandrew! I would like to try my SM58 on my Blackberry q10 device for street interviews. Have you ever considered recording a dynamic microphone with your Iphone? I might be wrong, but theoretically all the android/ iphones provide 5V for the microphone through the TRRS. There are adapters from XLR to TRRS, but I think, if you have the wiring diagram, you can easily make a cable for that. What is your opinion?
Wtf, i got Green shure sticker and stand converter in the packaging. I bought it from the website where they selling a lot of audio products and IT looks like verified website.I am just having issue with gain. I cant get to 0db without having a noise in the background and All knobs turned up

Hi. Do you know how to connect the receiver of a "Sennheiser ew 112-p G3" wireless microphone system to a computer via USB? I bought that wireless mic system for a camera but I also want to use it for Zoom meetings on my computer. I don't have an audio input jack on my computer, or at least not that I'm aware of. I have a headphone jack. If this info helps analyze the question, my laptop computer is the HP ProBook 455 G3.

Just a simple setup which can be used without desktop, Obviously without interface and just the recording transferred to Mobile. Will it be able to give a good sound quality. Decent mic, good price & I put a wind guard on it, sounds decent for vocals but could not pick up acoustic guitar sounds at all, going to get a SM57 for guitars >:D

The mic actually does come with an adapter, it's in the leather bag. Took me awhile to find it.

BTW, in my backyard, there are buskers who use this mic to good effect. It's about $100 here in Aussie. Buskers who have better voices tend to buy the Sennheiser 835 though. Same money, better sound.

Forget that the otehr two have both USB and XLR, i mean quality-wise for 100% speech and speech only.

Also, quick edit to suggest something, I'm curious if it would be good for the sake of comparison to record the same sentence in both mics, then cut back and forth between them in the comparison, so we can hear right back and forth the difference between the two. Just an idea.
Glad you reviewed this mic. AFAICT (As Far As I Can Tell), it's about 85% of an SM58 -- not great, but not too bad for a Shure budget mic.

Today i got my first dynamic mic e945 but after comparing with my at2020 i was disappointed with e945. i had focusrite solo audio interface and had gain to 90% of volume but in post when I fix both channel inside Premiere pro and inside Audition amplitude the gain level, I hear lots of ambient noise . I don't had a acoustic room for shooting my Photoshop classes. So please help ....!! what wrong I was doing or I need some extra things to fix these issue because I already had at2020 condenser mic which picks lots of noise

Is there an adapter cable available to go from the Shure SM48 port to usb? Or do you need something like the 2i2 that you used. I’d like to get in to some kind of podcasting eventually and have an SM48 from being a vocalist back in high school. I just don’t know where to begin!
This is a surprise! The handling noise and plosives suck, but the actual sound quality is acceptable, especially for spoken word. I'm really surprised. Question! What if you removed the grill and used the Stedman PS-101 on it? I just wonder if the tone would change in an appreciable way. For a band or small venue just starting out, this seems like a steal.
Hmmmmmmmm.That would be an interesting test. The problem I would have with that solution is it double the price you're paying and puts you in similar price range as a Blue Encore, SM58, SM57, etc. But still an interesting idea for a test... HMMMMM.

hey i mean my dad gave this mic to me cuase hes a musician and he has quit a few mics and i bought a berhinger um22 interface so ill just use this till i get somthing like a rode nt1 or a shure pg42 (jacksepticeyes old mic)
A note about frequency drop-off, I had a professor who was sick or something in the recording. Anyways, it sounded terrible and couldn't make words out easily. It was a chore just to figure out what the words were. But a little simple EQ during playback, reducing lows and boosting everything over 10k really cleaned it up. Like Night & Day. Just saying, that's a lot easier to do effectively when the mic is not fighting you by dropping the highs from the original recording.
It's a narrow consideration, but it is a real-world one

I might be wrong, but theoretically all the android/ iphones provide 5V for the microphone through the TRRS.
There are adapters from XLR to TRRS, but I think, if you have the wiring diagram, you can easily make a cable for that.
What is your opinion?

Hi. Do you know how to connect the receiver of a "Sennheiser ew 112-p G3" wireless microphone system to a computer via USB? I bought that wireless mic system for a camera but I also want to use it for Zoom meetings on my computer. I don't have an audio input jack on my computer, or at least not that I'm aware of. I have a headphone jack. If this info helps analyze the question, my laptop computer is the HP ProBook 455 G3.

No. Maybe a pop filter and you May want a little eq in post but it should be fine without much.
@@Podcastage Also if I go for The Zoom H1n with all that that accessories but no post processing. Just a simple setup which can be used without desktop, Obviously without interface and just the recording transferred to Mobile. Will it be able to give a good sound quality. Decent mic, good price & I put a wind guard on it, sounds decent for vocals
but could not pick up acoustic guitar sounds at all, going to get a SM57 for guitars >:D

Most of these mid range mics doesnt come with an XLR cable...
