Great video! I think it's important for people to realise with the expensive price tag is what the mic was originally designed for. Live touring vocals. I now use this mic as I love the response when using it creatively. The colour of a dynamic when you increase signal into it (sing or speak louder) changes more drastically than say its condenser counterpart (ksm9) which I used for 10 years before I switched to this. I think the ksm9 would be a great review to do. With same build quality and a switchable polar pattern, even smoother in the upper mids and air on the top its a great one for people with brighter voices... Particularly yourself
What a great review format. This is a great sounding dynamic microphone. Look at all that audio candy....starquad cable, Apollo interface, Shelford Channel!!!! Wow, everything sounds great.
I feel like I would always go earthworks vs a ksm8. The ksm8 is great but has something harsh in the highs to my ears earthworks mics are just so clean that even if the they are easier to smooth out (in my opinion). Thanks for another great video
Hi! I've been referring/ binge-watching your content for a few months and I learnt volumes about filmmaking audio! Keep up with your content! It would be very helpful if you make tutorials on post-production sound recording (ADR) and share your workflow, if you do such a thing in your job.
To my ears, keeping in mind they are 66-year-old ears with some tinnitus, it seemed to me that it had a bit fuller sound than the SM58, much closer to the SM7b, and might be a little more forgiving for a person with imperfect mic technique. All things considered, I think Shure has another hit on their hands.
Wow. This is an excellent mic. I will test it as a solo mic at a church...even though you didn't review it in the context of singing mic your test gave so many answers so we will test if for song. Much better than SM58 in my opinion....and probably worth the extra money as a solo mic.
SoundDevices samples at the beginning sound a tad cleaner then the Shelford channel at 08:30 to my ears - actually a review of this Shelford channel would be interesting... and as always: Thanks for the detailed and thorough review!
Would this work for a 2 person podcast? Not a great recording environment. Currently using the SM7B. We like it. Tried the RE20. We don’t like it as much. We have a sibilant issue with the RE20. Same thing with the PR40. Could pull the trigger and test one. Hmmm..... Anyway, good review. Didn’t know this microphone was out there.
£399 UK price, about the same as an SM7B albeit easier to drive. For live streaming at that (high) budget, I'd be taking a look at the Electrovoice RE320 and siblings. They're noted for lack of proximity effect. This seems a more apt mic for live gigs?
Great video, Curtis. Is there any chance you'll be reviewing the Shure MV7? I would love to know your thoughts on the quality as compared to the SM7b. I've read and seen other reviews, but I always come back to your channel for a "final take" of sorts. Thanks!
Hi Jim, yes, should have a review of the MV7 up this coming Sunday. Spoiler: The MV7 does not have the same rich bass response as the SM7B. That's good or bad depending on your perspective and audience and voice.
No, through the end of the year it is $400 at Sweetwater (link in description). Has been priced at $500 for a while. $600 was when it was originally released.
@@curtisjudd It was very controlled. Yes, it sounded great. But it's out of my price range for sure. Thanks for your great reviews. I've found you, Bandrew, Mike Delgaudio and Julian Krause to be very helpful.
Well, maybe my ears are aging, but to me the KSM8 sounds the least pleasant to my ears. There is a lack of "substance". I triple checked all 3 voices (daughter, wife, you) and SM58 and SM7B sounded way better in every discipline. I closed my eyes and listened with headphones, and sure, this is purely subjective as I can see when reading through the comments here. Very strange :D
In direct comparison, while listening on my Apple Mac computer, I hear ZERO discernable difference in quality from this mic and the Shure 58, and certainly nothing to justify it's sky high price. If I am going to play five times the price for a mic like this, I fully expect to hear sound reproduction FIVE TIMES BETTER. Just my take.
Great video!

@@curtisjudd You don't need me, but it sounds like a fun trip!
awesome! I have used SM58, but now I cant remember that was able to handle movements so well!
thanks Curtis.

Excellent video, Curtis!

Thanks for the insight, James. I agree, though the Earthworks mics are all quite a bit more expensive.

Thanks Edilebert. I haven't done any ADR recording, but will surely share my experience once I do.
All your videos Curtis are amazingly useful and very pleasant, both from technically and artistically points of views ! Thanks a lot for that ! 👏👏👏😎
Thanks so much Marc!

Taking your post sound course now. Really well done like your MixPre course!
Thanks OTsuperduper! Keep making great sound!

Next time throw the box behind you! ;-)
When Curtis tested handling noise I immediately thought "Hey, you haven't thrown the box over your shoulder!"
I tried, but it turns out the Bandrew has the tm on that. 😉
The reason u have low view count on your videos is the way u title them. In case u were wondering. Love ur stuff
Thanks. I avoid clickbait titles.
Nobody:
Curtis Judd: Releases mic review video.
Everyone: *deep breath* Roger Daltry scream. "YEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!"
Hahaha! Two for the price of one this week!
@@curtisjudd I see you ended October strong; starting November stronger!

Thanks tom - the Shelford channel is not necessarily clean, but I like its sound with some of my other microphones.
Good sounding mic! Great video as always, Curtis!
Hey, thanks Tyler!
I’ve never heard of this mic- really interesting! It sounds pretty darn good.
The price, however...😱
Yes, but fortunately that price is coming down for the holidays!
Nice. Hooked up with Sweetwater? Oh...if I o ly had a misunderstanding channel. 😁😁😁
Hahaha!
Ok for the mic, but which audio mixer do you recommend. Atem Mini has headphone output only. Which one can do headphone and speakers output.
The Mackie VLZ4 mixers have worked well for me.

Could be, just depends on the voice. My voice sounds better on the KSM8 vs my RE20.

Would a Shure Beta 87A sound better for the money? I know it's a condenser vs dynamic, but looking for a better handheld mic.
Great question! I haven't worked with the 87A but will post a video if we get a chance.
Sounds like it would make an excellent field mic - very forgiving when you're putting it in front of talent.
Thanks Kylee, good idea!
Is answering questions or replying to comments exclusive to some people ?!!
Not sure what you mean?
Politely persuading for the prompt provision of pizza!
Oh! That's perfect for next time!
KsM9 is good. Super cardiode
👍
Dag, a $600 mic?

Seems like Shure's answer to the Earthworks SR314.
Except dynamic. 😉
Sounds too harsh on the mid to upper range to me.
Fair assessment.
Your Earthworks sounds better to me!
Yes, but that's a condenser microphone. For those in an acoustically rough space, a dynamic mic like the KSM8 may be a better tool for the job.

That's ok - we all have preferences and our ears are substantively different. The good news for you is that your preferred options are less expensive!
I appreciate your response very much, thank you Curtis!

You definitely should not buy this microphone. Glad we could make a video to help with that decision.

No kidding.
KSM 8 is sibilant and dull at the same time.
Interesting. I get the sibilant but not hearing the dull.
@@curtisjudd I'm sorry, maybe a wrong word...It sounds congested somehow, closed. I have one, but don't like it. SM 58 sounds more natural to my ears.
@ Yes, every voice and every set of ears are different so that is totally believable.
