Now that i have retired . I carve for enjoyment. I have carved a few celtic knots but i always had to find them on the internet and remake them to fit the wood i was using. You have opened up a new world of designs and carving that i can draw to fit anywhere thank you. Rusty
David Nicholls videos are tremendous, easy to understand, informative and infomationally excellent. I have learnt so much about how to draw celtic designs its amazing. Thank you very much, Jan Andrews
Going to try this myself, going to try it with a triangle too, and a pentagon, hexagon, septagon and octagon, slowly becomming more patient as im working up those shapes with trefoils in them
Hello sir, I'm a mathematician, geometer really, and I'm loving these videos! I was just wandering if you're a mathematician yourself :) have a nice day!
No, I'm not a mathematician but I have an interest in geometry. I'm sure you know much more about it than I do! You might have a look at my playlist 'Simple geometry without tears' made in response to many of my students who don't even know how to divide a line in half with compasses! I've just started working on a series on the Golden Section, and I'm thinking about another series on the fourth dimension, but that's a long time in the future - if I ever get round to it. ;-) I might pick you brains sometime!! Thanks for your kind comments!
I'll be sure to check your geometry without tears" playlist hehe, sounds delightful. Unfortunately nowadays geometry is not as valued as it should be, even among mathematicians. Which is a shame really, it being so beautiful. In the university where I teach, in Brazil, the mathematics students have only 2 courses related to geometry and I find that absurd, but that is another discussion altogether. Anyway, apart from the obvious beauty of the celtic knots what intrigues me right now is the topology behind each knot; I'm still dwelling on it, if I come to any conclusions I'll let you know. And please, do make a playlist on the fourth dimension and the golden ratio, such wonderful topics! Cheers
I really like this construct ion of the pentagon, I think it is so elegant! However, I am informed that it is not 100% accurate. It's good enough for me though, speaking as an artist rather than a mathematician! ua-cam.com/video/FiUacEba8EE/v-deo.html The 4D series that I'm thinking about revolves around work done by Claude Bragden in the 1920's and 30's. He wrote a fascinating book called The Projective Ornament, in which he takes 4D projections of solids and translates them into architectural decoration. I love them! www.fulltable.com/vts/g/geom/cb.htm I's be very interested if you come to any topological conclusions on Celtic design. Which University do you work for?
I had never seen that construction of the pentagon, it is very interesting indeed! You say it isn't regular, I can't say immediately, I'd have to re-watch a few times and do some calculations to confirm this. However it is a very good approximation, at least to the naked eye. I was more familiar with the construction you do in the video "pentagon 2". These constructions are always fascinating to me hehe I did not know of that book, thanks for sharing! I'll try to find the time to take a proper look, it seems fascinating. About the topology of celtic knots: lo and behold, look what I found after a very quick google search. Haven't had the time to read it, but seems like it explains some questions I had! www.mi.sanu.ac.rs/vismath/fisher/index.html I work for Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC in portuguese), in the city of Florianopolis, in the south of Brazil :)
Your brief but clear videos are still great today. Thank you and your faerie!
thanks chris!
I love these videos so much. You're great at explaining how to do these patterns in such a simple way.
thanks for saying so, George

Why don't these videos have a million views?! Its fascinating and you explain it so well.
I wish they did! Perhaps you could watch them a million times! ;-)
Thanks for your kind comments, Tracey

Thank you for your extremely kind comments.
This is such a helpful series, I can't wait to wood burn one of these designs into a box for my father

Thank you for your kind comment, Jessalyn. I hope your father appreciates the box.

chris williams Glad you're using them, Chris
Ah-mazing! Thank you so much.
You're very welcome Barbara ;-) xx
